Which Saiyan Did It: Only True Dragon Ball Fans Know

By the time Dragon Ball Super came to a close, the expanded universe(s) of the series included a countless number of characters, species, and states of existence in general, giving fans of all sorts of personalities someone with whom they could identify. That said, from the very beginning, the most popular type of warrior in Dragon Ball has been Saiyans, largely because of the greatest Saiyan of them all, the legendary Goku.

On top of the connection to Goku and several of his closest allies, the Saiyan race will always be revered for it’s sheer power, resilience, and respect for the art of battle. Despite the fact very few Saiyans remain in existence by the time Dragon Ball began, the survivors were perhaps the strongest warriors their home Planet Vegeta had to offer. Every one of them would prove this fact several times over in their own way, with one Saiyan or another primarily responsible for almost every major event to take place in the series.

Because Saiyans are without a doubt the most impactful beings in Dragon Ball, one sign that easily separates a real fan from a mere casual is how much they can say about Goku’s people. Keep reading to take a quiz on which Saiyan did what that only a true Dragon Ball expert has any chance of passing.

Question 1

Which Saiyan arrives on Earth first?

Interesting and powerful as Saiyans are, humankind would never have found any interest in these alien beings had they not first come to Earth. It all started when one sole Saiyan warrior was sent to the planet with a mission to destroy any living beings he may find, only for the child to suffer a head injury and completely forget his own origin story. Years later, a few more Saiyans would come to the planet looking for that first one, both wondering what went wrong and looking to succeed where he had failed.

Question 2

Who finally tells Goku that he’s a Saiyan?

In retrospect, it’s a little hard to wrap one’s head around the fact Dragon Ball existed as a medium for a solid four years before the term “Saiyan” was even a thing. Because Goku lost his memory as a child, he had no idea he was from another planet, and somehow the fact he had a tail didn’t clue him in to the fact he may not be human. Finally, the legendary Saiyan learned where he came from not long after the birth of his first son, when his long-lost brother followed him to Earth to remind him about it.

Question 3

What character is the proud Prince of Saiyans?

Goku might be the strongest and most celebrated Saiyan of all, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s the most important. While the vast majority of their race is gone, at least one member of Saiyan royalty still exists in their crown prince. In contrast to Goku’s general apathy about his homeland, this other character never forgets where he came from, making it his life’s goal to represent his people well after most of them were destroyed. If he gets a change to prove he’s stronger than Goku in the process, even better.

Question 4

Which Saiyan wears a hat containing a Dragon Ball as a child?

Able to grant any wish a person could contrive, positive or negative, the Dragon Balls are understandably the most sought after objects on any planet that has them. This is extremely helpful to Goku and friends when they fall in battle, yet it’s also a dangerous prospect should the Dragon Balls fall into the wrong hands. There’s no better way to ensure that won’t happen than to have a Saiyan personally protecting them for years, a task one of them indirectly accomplishes by attaching the Four-Star Ball to his hat as a child.

Question 5

What other Saiyan arrives on Earth with Vegeta?

After Goku ostensibly failed at his goal to conquer the Earth, and then Raditz didn’t show any returns on his inquiry to the matter, it was up to the Prince of Saiyans himself to hit the small blue planet and see what was the matter. More importantly, he was also interested in the Dragon Balls, which he intended to find and use to wish for immortality. Being a member of the royal family, and knowing few things come easy even to the leader, Vegeta decides to bring along another powerful Saiyan warrior with him for backup.

Question 6

Who informs everybody about the Dragon Balls on Namek?

Considering Goku didn’t even know he was a Saiyan, it shouldn’t be that surprising he and his friends were similarly unaware that any life existed beyond Earth whatsoever. This is despite the fact Piccolo had made his presence known for years, and the regenerating green warrior clearly wasn’t human, either. Turns out he’s a Namekian, and his home planet has another set of wish granting Dragon Balls that may be even more powerful than the ones on Earth. Naturally, it’s a Saiyan who possesses this extremely important information, and he quickly shares it with the others.

Question 7

Which character is the final Saiyan to help Goku become a Super Saiyan God?

Strong and powerful as Goku and his fellow Saiyans are, both together and separately, they simply don’t have the strength required to take on an actual God. That’s the challenge they face when Beerus and Whis come to Earth looking for the fated Super Saiyan God, hoping such a being could actual pose a challenge to them in battle. Initially, it looks like they’re going to leave empty handed, and destroy the whole planet out of disappointment, until Goku and five other Saiyans combine their powers—including one last unborn Saiyan the others didn’t even know about yet.

Question 8

Who is the first Dragon Ball character to become a Super Saiyan?

As if being a Saiyan didn’t imply an individual was powerful enough, Dragon Ball gradually introduced several layers of strength to the legendary warrior race. The first major landmark a Saiyan could achieve is tapping into their power as a Super Saiyan, a state originally achieved through an immense surge of emotion they can then return into sheer energy whenever the situation calls for it. Eventually, just about every Saiyan to last more than a few episodes would see their hair turn yellow and glowy, but only one of them could do it first.

Question 9

Which Saiyan is the first to travel through time?

Helpful as it would be to have a Saiyan suddenly show up at various points in history, Goku and his friends are generally too busy with the present day to spend their lives time travelling and fixing the problems of the past. Well, all but one of them, anyway. In fact, there’s a certain Saiyan who first introduced himself to the others as a mysterious warrior from the future, then continued travelling through space and time in his every appearance from there. Sometimes, he even brought the others along with him, always traveling in devices made by his loving mother.

Question 10

What is Goku’s father named?

The mere fact Goku doesn’t know a whole lot about where he comes from hardly means he appeared from thin air. Like any person, the legendary Saiyan warrior had a mother and father, both of whom cared about the kid a whole lot before sending him off to Earth as a baby. Goku’s parents primarily chose to send him away because his father knew of Frieza’s plans to destroy their planet, a fact the vast majority of the other Saiyans refused to believe until it was far too late. At that point, not even of Goku’s father could save them.

Question 11

Who is Piccolo’s first student?

Aside from the various Saiyans, the most powerful warrior in the Dragon Ball universe is generally accepted as Piccolo. The Namekian fighter is at least much stronger than the average human, especially after he starts fusing with various other members of his race and exponentially increasing his own power. Initially, Piccolo’s strength was a huge problem, as he started off as a being of pure evil looking to take over the world. Luckily, Goku got him to see the error of his ways, and even start imparting his battle prowess onto others as a trainer, mostly to young Saiyans.

Question 12

What do Goku and Chi-Chi name their second son?

Given how busy Goku usually is training and protecting the world from evil forces, it’s a small wonder he had the time to settle down and meet a wife. That they had time to produce children was even more surprising, although the fact it took about 10 years between their first and second child makes plenty of sense. In any event, it’s probably a good thing Goku kept his bloodline going, as the entire Saiyan race could have disappeared along with him if he never had any kids.

Question 13

Which Saiyan comes to Earth to plant the Tree of Might?

One quality that remains consistent throughout almost all Saiyans is that no matter how powerful they get, they always want to get even stronger. That said, they immediately differentiate themselves in how they chose to go about achieving this power. Goku and friends generally settle for hard work and dedication, yet the more villainous outsiders will use tricks and dastardly shortcuts. One such menace intends to plant the Tree of Might and suck Earth of its resources, then eat the Tree’s fruit to absorb he planet’s energy.

Question 14

Who teleports himself and Cell to King Kai’s planet?

Generally speaking, Saiyans, like any other species, would prefer to see a conflict end with their body still in one piece. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always happen, especially in the Dragon Ball universe, where characters fall in battle on a regular basis. While Saiyans are typically willing to fight harder than anyone to ensure they’ll at least survive, the good ones also possess an indomitable spirit that recognizes the greater good and puts the needs of many above those of few. In one instance, this means teleporting Cell away from the others, knowing that doing so won’t end well for him.

Question 15

Which character does Goku hold onto while Piccolo eliminates them both?

Amazingly, there exist beings in the Dragon Ball universe so powerful that even the combined powers of a Saiyan and a Namekian weren’t enough to defeat him. Granted, it was another Saiyan, but still, the point is Goku, Piccolo, and all of planet Earth were facing a massive threat when one of them decided to do something extremely drastic. Thinking it was the only way to win, Goku latched on to their opponent and held him in place while Piccolo delivered a final blow to them both.

Question 16

Who warns Goku he’ll suffer a heart virus in the future?

Goku can withstand just about anything in battle, and even if he couldn’t, the Dragon Balls are always there to bring him back from the afterlife. However, neither Goku nor any other Saiyans are immortal, still susceptible to regular diseases and disorders from which not even Porunga or Shenron can revive them. The idea of Goku suffering such a fate could be absolutely catastrophic, a reality that comes true in an alternate future timeline. Luckily, someone from that time traveled to the past and warned Goku what would happen.

Question 17

Which character marries Bulma?

While nowhere near as strong as the average Saiyan physically, regular human scientist Bulma always possessed a dominant personality that saw her take charge of several Saiyan warriors in her day. With Bulma’s other defining characteristic her desire to find a boyfriend, it was only a matter of time before she talked one of these Saiyans into marrying her, and then starting a family together. At that point, her scientific knowledge became a perfect complement to her Saiyan family’s physical strength, creating many of their strongest weapons in the fight against evil.

Question 18

Who dons a costume and fights crime as the Great Saiyaman?

Not wanting to bring attention to their immense power, the warriors of Dragon Ball generally attempt to fight their battles far away from civilization. Nonetheless, they’re still altruistic heroes in their normal lives, so when evil is afoot, they feel compelled to do something about it and save the day. Once one of them starts going to high school and sees drama in the big city every day, it’s almost possible to avoid detection, so he creates a silly costume that winks at the source of his power without revealing too much about it.

Question 19

What character is formed through the first successful fusion dance?

The only thing more powerful than one Saiyan is two Saiyans. This holds true whether they’re simply standing side by side or if they underwent the sacred ritual that is the Fusion Dance and combined their powers into one body. Out of context, the dance almost looks a little bit silly, but it needs to be performed perfectly and with expert choreography, or he intended result won’t be as strong and agile as desired. While many characters have attempted it, only one pulled it off on a consistent basis.

Question 20

Who asks their friends to stop reviving them for the good of humanity?

After several years of nonstop fighting in Dragon Ball, one of the Saiyans had a sudden moment of clarity. Multiple threats to the entire universe had come and gone in the past couple months alone, and it was starting to look like this only happened because Saiyans were around attracting the attention of intergalactic evil. It was even fair to boil this down a little bit further and note that one Saiyan in particular was constantly targeted, leading him to ask the other warriors not to stop reviving him with the Dragon Balls.

Question 21

What character does Emperor Pilaf and his crew accidentally kidnap?

From the very beginning of Dragon Ball, it was abundantly clear that Emperor Pilaf and his crew were amongst the most inept villains in history. This trend held true all the way to Dragon Ball Super, by which point they accidentally wished themselves back to a childlike state. This didn’t slow them down, though, as they still wanted to re-collect the Dragon Balls and get some revenge on Goku along the way. Of course, their plans to do so fail miserably, and in the process, they somehow wind up with a stowaway baby Saiyan in the Pilaf Machine.

Question 22

Whose tail does Puar remove?

Despite the fact it’s one of the race’s most defining characteristics, very few Saiyans get to keep their tails throughout the entirety of Dragon Ball. Not only does it quickly give away they fact they’re not from this world, but a Saiyan with a tail also runs the risk of turning into a Great Ape during the full moon and going on an unstoppable rampage. For this reason, most of them had their tails cut off in one way or another, usually during battle. In one case, Puar turned into a pair of scissors and simply snipped it off.

Question 23

Who singled-handedly eliminated four out of five members of the Ginyu Force?

Just about every Saiyan has defeated at least one or two bad guys in battle, and some of these victories genuinely had an impact on the entire universe. However, these were usually one on one battles, and powerful as the enemies were, the heroes of Dragon Ball could easily focus all their efforts on taking one villain down. Slightly more complicated is when several threats to the world banded together, as was the case with Frieza’s weird Ginyu Force. Amazingly, a single Saiyan was able to take four of the members out one by one.

Question 24

Which “Legendary Super Saiyan” was born with a power level of 10,000?

It should go without saying that Goku and his friends are particularly powerful individuals, especially the ones with Saiyan blood flowing through their veins. That said, in three subsequent Dragon Ball movies, it’s revealed that these Saiyans are really just average when compared to a certain “Legendary Super Saiyan” with the potential to destroy them all. When still a baby, this beast had a power level of 10,000, and as luck would have it, he spends his entire life with a serious grudge against Goku.

Question 25

Whose cries cause the Legendary Super Saiyan to re-awaken from his stasis?

Terrifying and filled with muscles as Broly is, the warriors of Earth were eventually able to beat the Legendary Super Saiyan into submission on three separate occasions. Of course, in most cases, they only had to do this once before the enemy threat either gave up or decided to mend the error of their ways and join the team. For Broly, however, old habits are hard to break, and the second he heard another Saiyan crying, it brought him back to infancy when Goku’s earlier tears inspired his lifelong madness.

Question 26

What character removes (and then breaks) the Z Sword?

Matching something out of Arthurian legend, after a handful of Saiyans find themselves at the Sacred World of the Kai, they learn of a mystical weapon called the Z Sword. Legend has it the fated blade is impossible to remove from its resting place, a reality that soon becomes apparent to the warriors trying to do so. However, the Kai’s didn’t count on one of them tapping into his power as a Super Saiyan, which easily allowed him to lift the Z Sword from the Earth. Granted, he broke it in half seconds later, but hey—he removed the sword!

Question 27

Who eliminates Frieza and King Cold for the first time?

Initially, it looked like the battle with Frieza was over when he and Goku gradually destroyed Planet Namek with their fighting. Turns out that was just the beginning, as Frieza was soon found by his father King Cold and brought back to life. Just as the two vicious warlords arrived on Earth, however, a mysterious stranger showed up out of nowhere, using his sword to slice them into pieces. Turns out this man was a Saiyan from the future, explaining his extreme strength, and how he knew Frieza was going to try making comeback.

Question 28

Who accidentally stepped on their grandfather in Great Ape form?

Big and powerful as it makes them, there’s a huge drawback for Saiyans tapping into their power as Great Apes during the full moon in that they have no control over their actions in this form. Thusly transformed, the only thing on a Saiyan’s mind is wanton destructing, be it in the form of tearing down buildings with their fists or simply stomping on everyone in sight. Early in one Saiyan’s life, this has disastrous results when he unknowingly became the giant beast and stepped on his grandfather.

Question 29

Which Saiyan self-sacrifices in an effort to stop Majin Buu?

As has been well established, when a Saiyan feels the only way to save humanity from a given threat is to put their own life at risk, they’ll probably feel compelled to do so. This means both valiantly fighting until the very end, and occasionally, using a doomsday sort of attack they know will result in their own demise, hoping it will have some impact on the enemy before time runs out. Faced with the monstrous Majin Buu, one warrior unleashes his “Final Attack,” expending all the energy of his body in a huge blast that turns him to stone.

While Goku himself was allowed to participate as a child, for whatever reason, in later years, the tournament gets split into a Junior and Adult division, with the kids not allowed to participate against the grown-ups. This doesn’t sit well with two Saiyan warriors, who steal another contestants costume to enter, until Android 18 foils their plan.

Question 31

What do Goku and Vegeta call themselves when fused with Potarra Earrings?

Powerful and adaptable as the Fusion Dance can be, it’s also a complicated process that not everyone can quite master. Making matters much easier, the Dragon Ball universe also has the Potarra Earrings, which allow two warriors to fuse into one simply by putting the mystical jewelry on opposite ears. The downside is that this version only lasts an hour, and when especially powerful beings like Saiyans attempt it, the earrings may not even withstand their combined energy for that long. Nonetheless, Goku and Vegeta quickly try them out on several occasions.

Question 32

Which character wins the 25th World Martial Arts tournament Junior Division?

Annoying as it was for the kids to have the World Martial Arts tournament separated into an Adult and Junior divisions, at least the odds were extremely high that a Saiyan-Human youth would be the one picking up the victory. Unsurprisingly, the first time Goku and company attended the tournament after it got split in two, descendants of the warrior race immediately made it to the finals and challenged one another. After one was named the winner, they also got to fight the victor of last year’s adult contest, knocking him out with a single blow.

Question 33

Which character suffers from Delayed Onset Ki Disorder after repeatedly using too much energy?

It goes without saying the warriors of Dragon Ball expend an incredible amount of energy in the fight against evil. Their primary weapons are blasts of “ki,” and even when the battle seems over, every last one of them chooses to fly everywhere they go rather than walk. Eventually, one Saiyans uses his own aura so heavily he begins to suffer Delayed Onset Ki Disorder, a fact revealed when his Instant Transmission ability experiences serious repeat flaws. Luckily, the cure is pretty simple, as sufferers simply need to give fighting a rest for a short while until they recover.

Question 34

Which Saiyan lands the final blow against Cell?

With Goku back in the afterlife thanks to Cell’s gigantic but incomplete self-destruction, the remaining warriors of Earth still faced a serious challenge in finding a way to destroy the regenerating android both completely and without the legendary Saiyan. On the plus side, there were also a solid three or four other Saiyans on Earth ready to pick up where their fallen friend left off. In Goku’s mind, one of them was even stronger than he himself had ever been, leaving the Saiyan warrior very confident things would be just fine without him.

Question 35

Who tells Goku and Vegeta their race exists on Universe 6?

For the vast majority of Dragon Ball, Goku, Vegeta, and the other few Saiyans went through life assuming they were the very last remaining members of their races. Then, in Dragon Ball Super, fans learned Universe 7 was merely one of 12 such entities, each containing an entire world of its own, populated by literally countless characters. Much to their surprise, it was also revealed that some of these Universes were linked with others, meaning Saiyans could potentially have existed on them. During the Tournament of Power, Goku and Vegeta meet a child who confirms that theory as correct.

Question 36

What was the final King of Saiyans named?

The Saiyan race may largely have been destroyed, yet the continued legacy of Goku, Vegeta, and their families means their people’s history will never be forgotten. While the final King of Saiyans disappeared along with his planet, his few remaining descendants have done whatever the could to keep his name and reign in high regard. Frieza also keeps the final Saiyan king relevant as well, albeit in a more mocking and insulting way, laughing at how easy it was to destroy him and his kingdom.

Question 37

Which Saiyan from Universe 6 has trouble controlling her power?

Unlike the warriors of Universe 7, the Saiyans of Universe 6 apparently don’t know all that much about their race’s secret abilities. Of course, once they meet in the Tournament of Power, Goku, Vegeta, and the others instantly clue them into what a Super Saiyan is, leading everyone with the ability to try it out in battle. Unfortunately, not everyone has the same control over their emotions as Goku and friends, and one female Saiyan in particular is so mindlessly destructive in this form she goes on an unstoppable rampage every time she enters it.

Question 38

Which character’s body does Future Zamasu steal?

After several years of Saiyan warriors easily standing against any threat humanity faced, their enemies started noticing the best way to beat a Saiyan was to start acting like one. Should the situation allow it, they might also simply steal a Saiyan’s body and tricking the world into believing a former warrior of justice became pure evil. In the future, Zamasu successfully pulls this off, appearing identical to the Saiyan he’s imitating aside from his permanent scowl and villainous dark clothing.

Question 39

Who is Vegeta and Bulma’s daughter?

For whatever reason, the Dragon Ball universe is now in a place where more male Saiyans exist than females, though this may not be the case forever. Joining Gohan and Videl’s daughter Pan, the most recent member of the race is another female, born to loving parents Vegeta and Bulma in Dragon Ball Super. As is often the case, having a daughter proves to be one of the final steps in Vegeta accepting his role as a family man, protecting his child above all else—even if there’s a chance she’ll become a Saiyan warrior herself one day.

Question 40

Which Saiyan has their abilities stolen by a strange purple goo called Commeson?

It was bad enough when men like Zamasu and Captain Ginyu were out there stealing Saiyan’s bodies. Unfortunately, the residents of Universe 6 have another threat to worry about with a strange purple weapon called Commeson, which can both take a warrior’s form and drain them of their abilities. Naturally, when a group of Saiyans travel to Universe 6 between intergalactic tournaments, one of them is almost immediately hit with this affliction, causing a huge problem for the other Saiyans who traveled with him as they try and stop this purple doppelganger.
