Only Real NHL Fans Will Get 100% On This Starting Goalies Quiz!

There are very few positions in sports that come with as much pressure as a starting goalie in the NHL. Maybe a starting pitcher in baseball, but they only play once every 4-5 games. An NFL quarterback comes with a ton of pressure, but you're only on the field half the game. As a hockey goaltender, you have to stay focused for a full 60 minutes, every game. If you don't, there's a really good chance your team won't win. Add the fact that your job description is to stand in front of frozen rubber pucks being fired straight at you at ~90mph, and you can see why people think hockey goaltenders are crazy.

These goalies at least have the advantage of playing in an era where they wear full protective gear, including masks, as well as better coaching than back in the old days. That said, there is little that separates above-average goalies from below-average goalies. In hockey, it might be the single toughest position to judge skill. Still, you can tell a great goalie from a mile away, especially if he can stay consistent for over a full season. Once you find a guy like that, you can’t afford to let him go.

Some of these questions will be a lot easier to answer than others, because some of these goalies are in their first season as a starting goalie. Can you name these starting goaltenders? Complete the quiz to find out!

Question 1

Who is the San Jose Sharks' starting goaltender?

The goalie that currently starts for the San Jose Sharks actually got his start in Los Angeles, and was the backup goalie for the Stanley Cup winners in 2014. He joined the Sharks the following season after a series of trades first sent him to Boston for Colin Miller, and then to San Jose for a first-rounder. While he hasn’t disappointed since joining the team, he hasn’t really surpassed expectations either. The San Jose Sharks still await their first Stanley Cup victory.

Question 2

Who is the Los Angeles Kings' starting goaltender?

This goaltender has been with the Kings ever since he entered the league in 2007, and is now closing in on a decade as their starting goaltender. Question 3

Who is the Vegas Golden Knights' starting goaltender?

Being a brand new franchise this year in the NHL, this veteran has the honour of being the first ever goaltender for the Vegas Golden Knights. While the Knights have had an incredible season, their situation in goal hasn’t been as simple as they thought it would be. Because of a litany of injuries, they were forced to use five different goaltenders in the 2017-18 season. Luckily, this player, the one they had planned on starting for most of the season, returned for the last few months, and will be healthy for the playoffs. Who is it?

Question 4

Who is the Montreal Canadiens' starting goaltender?

This goaltender had an interesting road to the NHL, starting with his dad personally flying him to games from his hometown in rural British Columbia. It didn’t take long for him to get noticed, he was a big part of the Canadian team that won the 2007 World Junior Hockey Championship, winning the MVP. He then began his career with the Montreal Canadiens, and has not looked back. This player has won both the Vezina and Jennings Trophy, and is set to be the highest paid goalie in the history of the league. What’s his name?

Question 5

Who is the St. Louis Blues' starting goaltender?

The St. Louis Blues drafted their current starting goaltender out of the QMJHL back in 2008. Still, he had a long way to go before playing his first game with the club. In 2009 he was the starting goalie for the silver-medal winning Canada team at the World Juniors. The season after, he was named QMJHL goalie of the year. He’d make his NHL debut in 2012, in the playoffs no less, relieving an injured Brian Elliott for just a minute of gameplay. He’d toil in the AHL four years before becoming a regular on the Blues in 2014.

Question 6

Who is the Washington Capitals' starting goaltender?

The Washington Capitals have gone over a decade with Alex Ovechkin, yet haven’t been able to win the Eastern Conference title yet. Whether that’s due to luck, or goaltending, we’ll never be sure, but the Caps have shown hints this year that they may be looking to go in a different direction than years past. Although the answer to this question won’t be starting for Washington in the playoffs, he played the majority of the regular season, and there’s no indication the job won’t be his when he’s healthy.

Question 7

Who is the New York Rangers' starting goaltender?

Also known as “The King”, this Swedish netminder has been one of the best in the NHL for years now, and the main man between the pipes in New York for even longer. The goalie has won the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender, and even a Hart Trophy in 2012 as the league MVP. He’s also found a passion for fashion while in New York, and if he isn’t the best looking NHL player, he certainly is one of the best dressed. What is the name of the Rangers’ starting goalie?

Question 8

Who is The Boston Bruins' starting goaltender?

This player will forever haunt fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and not just because he was in net during the Leafs 4-1 playoff collapse at the hands of the Bruins. The reason this player’s name is so triggering for Buds fans, is that the Leafs actually drafted this player, and traded him, straight-up, for another goalie, Andrew Raycroft. Since the trade, this player has amassed 238 wins with Boston, while Raycroft had just 39 in less than two seasons in Toronto before being let go. Who is Boston’s starting goalie?

Question 9

Who is the New Jersey Devils' starting goaltender?

This goalie made his way to New Jersey by way of Vancouver, because the Canucks just couldn’t decide who they wanted their starter to be. While it hasn’t worked out for the Canucks, it has certainly worked out for both this player, and the Devils franchise. He had massive shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of future first-ballot Hall-of-Famer Martin Brodeur, but the fact that the team was in a rebuild helped lower the expectations for the first few seasons. Now, they are finished the rebuild, and headed for the playoffs. What’s the Devils’ starting goalie’s name?

Question 10

Who is the Dallas Stars' starting goaltender?

This goalie has been good enough over his career that playoff teams are willing to pick him up, but apparently not good enough for teams to commit to him for the long-term, or for lots of money. That is, until he signed with the Dallas Stars. After playing for the Senators, Lightning, Kings, and Blues in his first eight seasons, it looks like he has finally found his home, as he is under contract with the Stars until he turns 35. Who is Dallas’ starting goaltender?

Question 11

Who is the Chicago Blackhawks' starting goaltender?

The Chicago Blackhawks pretty deliberately built their team around their forwards and defencemen as opposed to their goalie, and it has certainly worked out for them. This player isn’t regularly being discussed as one of the best in game, but I’m sure it doesn’t matter to him, given he has three Stanley Cup rings to show for it. 2017-18 was the first season where this player didn’t start over 50 games due to a concussion, but the team is confident he’ll be able to lead them to the playoffs once again next season. Who is it?

Question 12

Who is the Toronto Maple Leafs' starting goaltender?

As mentioned in the Bruins question earlier, the Leafs have had issues finding their #1 goaltender for years and years now. However, their search for a true starter seems to be over. They obtained their current goalie from Anaheim in the 2016 off-season, in exchange for a 1st and a 2nd round pick. He hasn’t disappointed at all, posting a 2.33 GAA, .918 SV%, and 71 wins in his first two seasons with the team, qualifying them for the playoffs in both years. Do you know who the Leafs’ netminder is in 2018?

Question 13

Who is Tampa Bay Lightning's starting goaltender?

The current goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightning came through the team’s system, something that the Detroit Red Wings used to do with their players back when Steve Yzerman played for them, and something you expect Tampa to do more often with Yzerman as their GM. The goaltender in question was drafted in 2012, after backstopping the Russian U-20 team to a silver medal at the World Juniors. It wasn’t until 2016, that he took over as the regular starting goaltender. Who is it?

Question 14

Who is the Pittsburgh Penguins' starting goaltender?

This goaltender has played so well for the Pittsburgh Penguins, that they were willing to let a three-time Stanley Cup winning goaltender leave for Las Vegas. In their 2016 Stanley Cup run, this player filled in for their injured starter, and went 21 games with a 2.08 GAA and .923 SV%. The very next season, this goalie missed some games with injury, but when he came back he actually improved on those numbers, with a 1.70 GAA and .937 SV% in 11 games. Do you know who Pittsburgh’s #1 goaltender is?

Question 15

Who is the Philadelphia Flyers' starting goaltender?

There’s probably no NHL that’s had as hard of a time finding a decent starting goaltender than the Philadelphia Flyers. So many times over the past decade they’ve had a great, Cup contending team, but just didn’t have enough consistency in net. Whenever a goalie would go on a decent run, either in the regular season or the playoffs, they’d come right back down to Earth almost immediately. Since the 2006-07 season, the Flyers have had seven different goalies lead their team in games played. Who is their current starting goalie?

Question 16

Who is the Carolina Hurricanes' starting goaltender?

Despite a league-worst, nine-year postseason drought, the Carolina Hurricanes’ goaltender is still the same one they had when the won the Stanley Cup all the way back in 2006. Time for a change? Well they did try. The Hurricanes signed a former Chicago Blackhawks backup in the off-season, and paid him more than the player that ended up with just two more starts, but ten more wins on the season. This goalie may not be the starter next season, but he has been for the last 12 seasons. Who is it?

Question 17

Who is the Winnipeg Jets’ starting goaltender?

This player led the entire NHL in wins in the 2017-18 season, so it might be time to pencil him in as the Winnipeg Jets’ starter for the years to come. They look to be some pretty promising years, too. With a first line of Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler, and super-sniper Patrik Laine, the Jets will surely make a playoff run sometime soon, if not this season. So far this goalie has played three seasons in Winnipeg, two were good, one was not so good. Do you know who the Jets’ starting goalie is?

Question 18

Who is the Colorado Avlanche's starting goaltender?

Since moving from Quebec City to Colorado in 1994, this team has really only had one great goalie. To be fair to others that wore the Avs jersey between the pipes, not many in the history of the league can compare to Patrick Roy. So far, their current goalie can’t either, but one playoff run could put him in the upper echelon of netminders currently in the league. He was traded to Colorado in exchange for a first-round pick, so naturally there are some expectations for him. Oh, and the coach at the time of the trade was Patrick Roy.

Question 19

Who is the Nashville Predators' starting goaltender?

This goalie has been easily one of the best in the world for years now. He comes from a long line of great Finnish goaltenders, which includes a couple others who are also in this quiz. This player has yet to win a Vezina, but you have to feel its just around the corner. He has 40+ wins in three straight seasons now, and four straight seasons with a GAA under 2.50. In the 2017 Stanley Cup Finals run, he posted a 1.96 GAA, and a .930 SV%. Who is Nashville’s starting goalie?

Question 20

Who is the Columbus Blue Jackets' starting goaltender?

This player is astonishingly the only active goalie to have won multiple Vezina Trophies, which is the award for the NHL’s top goaltender. You could argue that his first win should only count for half of a Vezina Trophy because only half of a season was played due to the lockout, but they didn’t cut the silverware in half so neither will I. His other win was very legitimate, as he finished the 2016-17 season with a 41–17–5 record and a .931 save percentage. Do you know who the Blue Jackets’ netminder is?

Question 21

Who is the Minnesota Wild's starting goaltender?

This goalie, like many others, had a long road to solidifying himself as a regular starting goaltender in the NHL. After being drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2004, he played for the Kamloops Blazers in the WHL for two seasons, the Stockton Thunder in the ECHL for 43 games, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and then the Springfield Falcons in the AHL before making his debut with the Oilers. Then, after a few seasons of backup duty, he played two games with the Preds, back to the AHL, to Arizona, before settling in Minnesota. Who is it?

Question 22

Who is the Anaheim Ducks' starting goaltender?

While some NHL teams have lots of trouble securing a legit starting goaltender, the Anaheim Ducks seem to always have two on their roster. This allows them to flip that second goaltender for draft picks like they did when they sent a player to Toronto two seasons ago. Their current goalie has been destined for a starting gig ever since he led the USA to a gold medal in the 2013 World Juniors. He’s in just his third year as a starter, but his numbers are very good. Do you know his name?

Question 23

Who is the Florida Panthers' starting goaltender?

This goalie has been doing it longer than any other goaltender still playing in the NHL. Currently in his 18th season in hockey’s top league, he kind of surprisingly hasn’t had as much playoff success as you would expect. Splitting his career between Florida and Vancouver, he’s qualified for the playoffs seven times, and been past the second round just once. Of course, the one time he did, his team lost in seven games in the Stanley Cup Final. Do you know who the elder statesman of NHL goalies is?

Question 24

Who is the Calgary Flames' starting goaltender?

The Calgary Flames are another team that has struggled to find a goaltender in recent times. They’ve been trying to find a Miikka Kiprusoff replacement since before he retired, and I still don’t think they’ve found it. They’ve bet their chips on a goalie who was searching for some playoff success after leaving Arizona, but in his first season with the Flames, they failed to even qualify for the postseason. Do you know who the starting goaltender for the Calgary Flames was in 2017-18?

Question 25

Who is the Vancouver Canucks' starting goaltender?

I’ll forgive you if you get this one wrong, because you had no good reason to watch a single Vancouver Canucks game in 2018. The team is in the midst of a rebuild in every sense of the term, and their goalie did his part to help his team down the standings for a better chance at the top pick in the draft .That said, he really wasn’t terrible considering the players in front of him, and if their young players improve, he might be good enough to get them back into the playoffs down the road. Who is it?

Question 26

Who is the Ottawa Senators' starting goaltender?

If you don’t recognize this player from his ridiculous ten 40+ save playoff games, you might recognize him from one of the most heart-wrenching stories of the 2016-17 season. His wife was diagnosed with a form of throat cancer which forced him into missing a couple games. He missed just one game before his wife urged him to return to the team after Ottawa’s backup was injured. And what a return it was. The goalie made 33 saves in a shutout win. Even better, his wife was in remission by the end of the playoffs of that season, which the Senators qualified for, and made the Conference Finals.

Question 27

Who is the Buffalo Sabres' starting goaltender?

This goaltender is pretty infamously one of the biggest hotheads in the league. Another way to say this is that he displays a lot of passion, and hates losing, neither of which are bad things. And to be honest, playing for the Buffalo Sabres, he has every reason to get a little upset now and then. In each of the four seasons he’s been with the Sabres, they have finished bottom ten in goals for, including last in the NHL this past season with under 200 goals scored. It’s tough to win with no offence. What’s his name?

Question 28

Who is the New York Islanders’ starting goaltender?

This goalie broke onto the NHL scene in the 2010 playoffs, where he led the Montreal Canadiens to a berth in the Eastern Conference Finals. They would lose to the Philadelphia Flyers, but it really did kickstart this player’s career. The Habs predictably kept Carey Price on the team and let this goalie go seek out a starting job. He’d last only a little over two seasons with St. Louis before it was back to a backup in Washington. Not satisfied, he joined the lowly New York Islanders, and has been their starter ever since. What’s his name?

Question 29

Who is the Detroit Red Wings' starting goaltender?

This goalie has the unfortunate one to have been the starter for the Detroit Red Wings’ first season without a playoff game in 25 seasons. He also failed to lead the Wings to the playoffs in the season after, so they have to wonder if he is the problem. Wonder you may, but that team has a lot of issues outside the crease. Aging stars, bad contracts, and not having the same draft luck almost definitely has more to do with their situation than bad goaltending, although it certainly hasn’t been spectacular. Who is Detroit’s starting goalie?

Question 30

Who is the Edmonton Oilers’ starting goaltender?

This is another goalie who had a long road to the NHL. After not being drafted to a Major-Junior hockey club, he played in the NCAA at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, not exactly a big name school. From there he was signed by the New York Rangers, but spent five seasons with various teams in the AHL and ECHL before getting his big break. Veteran Martin Biron was sent down in 2013, making this player Henrik Lundqvist’s backup. After a couple seasons behind the King, he was traded to Edmonton, and is currently their starter. Who is he?
