Moviegoers of all kinds find a special sort of fun in watching the things that go bump in the night on the big screen. Horror and monster movies breathed new Frankenstein-like life into the age-old concept of a scary story told around a campfire. Humanity--to a certain extent--likes getting scared, feeling their adrenaline pump through their veins, and feeling more alive than ever before. And while not everyone has the means or the guts to partake in extreme sports, we have the cinema to take care of those thrill rides whenever we need them.

Scary cinema is a way of facing our fears and eventually trying to enjoy them through the hyperbolic terms of movie bad guys. The kicker is that despite how much we enjoyed these monsters, villains, and all manner of bad guy on the big screen, they tend to stay with us and burn their way into our memories holding onto that special pee-your-pants part of our brains. For better or worse (if we're being honest then it's mostly worse) the monsters we see on the big screen are with us forever.

Let's see if you can identify these 35 classic horror/monster movies by some of the frightening creatures and beings in them!

Question 1

This film called these monsters "Graboids"

Movie Monster Quiz - Tremors

Graboids were the relentless underground monsters in this 1990 monster movie starring Kevin Bacon. Set in a remote desert town with no one to help them, the small group of townspeople did their best to escape these tectonic terrors. Part action, part comedy, and a good part practical monster effects, this film made audiences everywhere question how loudly they were walking and probably caused a dip in desert tourism for some time. The movie, and it's ever-evolving monster, became somewhat of a cult classic spawning multiple sequels and -- believe it or not -- an upcoming series with Bacon returning as a star.

Question 2

This franchise made us wary of the odd combination of summer camp, machetes, hockey masks, and the otherwise normal name, Jason.

Movie Monster Quiz - Friday the 13th

Despite the first film in this long and beloved franchise has little to due with it's hulking monster, it does feature him in the final moments. 'If there's people shirking their camp duties and getting busy on the job, you bet your machete-chopped butt Jason will show up to teach you a lesson.

Question 3

A city-smashing monster that ISN'T Godzilla or King Kong

Movie Monster Quiz - Cloverfield

This "found footage" movie does a great job of holding viewers in suspense and almost never showing the monster that terrorizes New York City. Most of the tension is seeing everything through a handheld camera with limited light and a restrictive angle just KNOWING something is just out of frame waiting to pounce. Also, the film's main characters are simply caught up in a city-wide panic and are simply dealing with destruction and the military's response to it. They have no agency in fighting the beast and are simply just trying to survive.

Question 4

The antagonist in this film definitely had the right to be vengeful

Movie Monster Quiz - Candyman

This film revitalized the common ghost story trope of saying someones name in a mirror to make them appear and scarred adults and children alike for years to come. After being summoned in Chicago's now-demolished Cabrini–Green public housing development, the vengeful spirit of a murdered man set out to terrorize the main character, Helen. You'd set out on a vengeful killing spree too if you were tortured and killed by a racist mob for simply loving a woman and making a life for yourself.

Question 5

This movie had some problems; the monsters weren't one of them.

Movie Monster Quiz - I am Legend

As remakes or re-imaginings of a novel go, this one wasn't so bad. Especially when you think about Charlton Heston's The Omega Man from 1971. The film starred Will Smith as US Army virologist Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville doing his best to fix a world-wide mutation from a virus initially created to cure cancer. As one of the last normal people alive, the film's creepiness comes from how isolated he is and the contrast of quiet loneliness to action-packed scenes with the incredibly creepy and mostly unstoppable zombie/vampire-like "Darkseekers." Unfortunately, despite hinting at it a few times, the film missed the mark of displaying that Neville has always been the real monster to all those who've transformed into something new.

Question 6

A rare case of a remake being way better than the original

Movie Monster Quiz - The Thing

This 1982 film was loosely based on a 1951 film involving aliens and a snowy setting. What set this one apart -- and makes it one of the more memorable monster movies of all time -- is the fantastic use of practical monster effects. Stuck in an Antarctic research facility and unsure about who you can trust, the tense moments in this movie were almost as good as the monster reveals. Taking on different, weird, and downright gross forms with each transformation, this film and its horrifying antagonist haunts audiences to this day.

Question 7

One, two, Freddy's coming for you. Three, four, Better lock your door...

Movie Monster Quiz - A Nightmare on Elm Street

Freddy Krueger is a movie monster that's capable of haunting audience's nightmares in more ways than one. Not only is he a downright frightening movie monster who is just plain hard to look at, the entire idea behind his powers is that he'll get you if you ever dare fall asleep. The massively successful film series that made Freddy a household name spawned countless self-aware and -- at times -- comedic movies that helped burn his face (get it!) into our memories forever.

Question 8

Beware of driving through Florida every 23rd spring.

Movie Monster Quiz - Jeepers Creepers

This monster/horror film series combines a lot of classic tropes that do a decent job at being all around hair-raising. Take college kids out on their own, add a bit of vehicular danger, mix in an ages-old monster who feeds on the fearful, a 1938 jazz standard song, and you've got yourself a decent horror flick. Justin Long starred in the first film of the series where they discovered an ancient bat-like monster who feeds every few decades in rural Florida.

Question 9

Horror comedy is at its finest in this lucky film franchise

Movie Monster Quiz - Leprechaun

Sometimes, a monster movie that knows exactly how ridiculous it is manages to remain just plain awesome. This particular Irish monster is closer to the actual lore instead of its cereal-selling counterpart. The legendary Warwick Davis plays the titular character and steals the show in every scene he's in by ramping up the nonsensical aspects of the downright silly story. Still, if you're of a certain age, there's no way this film didn't scare the ever-living crap out of you at some point in life.

Question 10

How technologically advanced can you be if Danny Glover can stop you?

Movie Monster Quiz - predator

This movie baddie is a strange combination of alien horror mixed with a hefty dose of technology. In the two eponymous films (and other "sequels" we dare not mention) this creature comes to Earth to do exactly what humanity is sometimes best known for; ruthlessly hunting things. The hunters became the hunted and were mostly outwitted and outgunned with all sorts of Alien tech. That is, of course, unless you were a mud-covered Arnold Schwarzenegger or an LAPD detective who had, by this time, already gotten too old for this shit.

Question 11

Just your classic story of a homicidal possessed doll.

Movie Monster Quiz - Childs Play

This horror franchise caused children and adults everywhere to second guess every single toy in their houses and probably resulted in more than a few being thrown away or at least locked in closets. The film's story is a simple one. Murderer is on the run, is shot, performs a voodoo spell he knows for some unknown reason to transfer his soul into a doll, said spell causes lightning to strike toy store, murderous hilarity ensues. Tale as old as time, really.

Question 12

Everyone knows the Alien films, but can you name their big baddies?

Movie Monster Quiz - xenomorph

It's fitting that the best alien films in existence are named so appropriately. The first Alien film in the franchise taught us to be more afraid of dark but also did its fair share of reminding us space travel might not be all it's cracked up to be in fiction. The key to the horror in these films was in doing something different with each one. The first had audiences question every faint sound or dark corner, the second threw tons of monsters at audiences in the light, and the third and other sequels made us fear Hollywood when they run out of ideas.

Question 13

Never mind the horror, this film gives us more shirtless Jeff Goldblum than we'd ever need!

Movie Monster Quiz - The Fly

This film relied heavily on the perils of scientific advancement which seems to be a common theme in most modern horror. In the film, an scientist creates honest-to-God teleportation and is still somehow not noticed by anyone other than a local reporter. Jeff Goldblum plays the scientist and Geena Davis plays the reporter in their best on-screen coupling until the highly underrated Earth Girls are Easy just a few years later. Goldblum teleports himself and accidentally mixes his DNA becoming a monstrous hybrid of man and beast!

Question 14

Not all crashing space meteorites contain Superman.

Movie Monster Quiz - Critters

Despite this film being a bit more comedy than horror, for a certain portion of the generation, these little eating machines caused quite a bit of anxiety. Crashing to Earth and immediately starting to binge on every meaty thing in sight, these creatures were less terrifying for their size and more for their numbers. Thankfully, no alien invasion movie in the 80s was without some positive resolution and the human forces had help from a couple of alien bounty hunters.

Question 15

This is patient zero for everyone hating clowns

Movie Monster Quiz - IT

Pick wither the miniseries from the 90s or the modern reboot and you'll come away from either with a severe disdain for any sort of clown. We can't entirely trust the clown that calls itself Pennywise because who would trust a sewer-dwelling clown (Georgie, that's who!) but the Stephen King novel sheds light on Pennywise MAYBE being some sort of alien. Yet, as we've mentioned before, Stephen King had a whole chunk of time where his ideas were fueled by certain substances so who knows what the real answer is. Either way. Screw the idea of scary clowns.

Question 16

Don't get these guys wet or feed them after midnight!

Movie Monster Quiz - Gremlins

Why is that lots of tiny monsters are somehow scarier than one big one? These films (and their namesake monsters) terrified all audiences with the first installment and mostly just kids with their second, more comedic, sequel. The Mogwai species is an odd one for sure. Getting them wet produces more of them and feeding them after midnight causes them to transform into bigger, grosser versions. Their two terrorizing adventures never really answered the important questions in life. Like what happens if they're traveling over time zones? Will a really humid day make them multiply? And what's the rule on when you can START feeding them? The world may never know.

Question 17

A wonderfully frightful horror film with a hidden lovely meaning.

Movie Monster Quiz - The Babadook

Rarely does a horror film work on any other level than "scare the audience." However, this 2014 Australian psychological horror film spent almost all of it scaring the crap out of audiences and then finished on a thoughtful metaphor for mental health. The titular monster was, in fact, a manifestation of grief in the main character's life. The end sees her dealing with it the best she can knowing it will always be a part of her life and affect those close to her.

Question 18

We don't know if this monster really had a name, but it left a slimy impression

Movie Monster Quiz - Slither

Long before James Gunn was tapped to direct some of the most popular films in the MCU, he was the mind behind this 2006 sci-fi horror comedy. Despite the laughs the movie has, it's supremely unsettling in its visuals from the early worm-like form the creatures take to what they do once they've taken over a human host. Surprisingly gory scenes, gross monster creations, and a number of horror movie tropes make this film one of the better monster movies in years.

Question 19

This film franchise is Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell's finest work!

Movie Monster Quiz - The Evil Dead

A lot of franchises evolve over time but Sam Raimi's claim to fame pretty much always knew what it was. It somehow is equal parts sincere horror while never really taking itself too seriously. The result is a franchise that spawned a few films, a reboot, and one of the best -- and gory -- horror television series ever made. The film, the sequels, and the series focus on Ashley 'Ash' J. Williams and his quest to rid the world of the evil he helped to unleash at an isolated cabin.

Question 20

Sentient cars, trucks, and -- believe it or not -- soda machines?

Movie Monster Quiz - Maximum Overdrive

There's a certain level of awesome horror nonsense that came out of the 80s and this Stephen King movie is one of the best examples of it. Some may point to the film's over the top feel due to being written AND directed solely by Stephen King while others may point to a certain -- let's say -- sniff-able pharmaceutical that was popular in the 80s. Whatever the reason for the film audiences got, it's full of some of the best and most serious man-on-truck acting that's ever been done!

Question 21

Dunnnn... dun. Dunnn... dun. Dun dun dun dun dun dun

Movie Monster Quiz - Jaws

There's few movie monsters as terrifying or iconic as this one and though the film is mostly bright, sunny, and shot during the day, it doesn't make it any less scary. While Godzilla and King Kong may compete for the crown of king of monsters, this aquatic terror doesn't even care about titles. The film not only caused people to be scared out of their minds of the water but also helped to create what we now know as the summer movie blockbuster!

Question 22

This film and The Ring prove that creepy undead women make for good horror

Movie Monster Quiz - The Grudge

Modern horror films tend to rely on lots of jump scares without worrying too much about the visuals. This franchise still leans heavy on that quick way to get people on the edge of their seats but does so with some truly unnerving visuals. A vengeful ghost of a murdered housewife and her son do their best to wreak havoc on the unlucky family that moved into their former home. Its a film -- and franchise -- full of downright unsettling visuals of creepy ghosts that undoubtedly haunt the dreams of moviegoers to this day.

Question 23

This is quite possibly the most famous horror franchise.

Movie Monster Quiz - halloween

There's something undeniably horrifying about a slow-moving and silent killer and these movies are some of the best examples. The insane, masked killer Michael Myers drove an entire generation to check under beds, around corners, and in closets. Much like Freddy Krueger or the similarly-masked Jason, the films evolved into something that wasn't too afraid of some self-referential nods but kept things relatively serious. The classic horror story even spawned remakes by modern horror guru, Rob Zombie in 2007 and 2009.

Question 24

Hard to be scared of a movie monster that's thwarted by Netflix

Movie Monster Quiz - The Ring

This film may not entirely age well as the driving force behind it relies on a technology that was pretty much already obsolete when the film came out. By watching a videotape, one becomes cursed and will die seven days later. When that happens, it's usually accompanied by the vengeful spirit of a girl named Samara who will creepily crawl out of your television screen. The visuals are terrifying in the film but who in their right mind would watch a cursed videotape let alone go through the trouble of finding a VCR these days.

Question 25

This film proved the humans to be a bit more monstrous than the monster

Movie Monster Quiz - Splice

There's no doubt that this 2009 science-fiction horror film had more than a few creepy moments. Most notably seeing Adrien Brody sleep with an artificially grown human/animal hybrid that was, for all intents and purposes, his daughter. While somewhat goofy, the film is able to build suspense for some genuinely jumpscare type moments and is able to raise questions on how ethical science can/should be in the name of progress. Granted it's done with an egg-headed winged monster baby named DREN but the point is still somewhat made.

Question 26

Before Snowpiercer, Bong Joon Ho made this monster movie

Movie Monster Quiz - The Host

While it's easy to get all your horror films from Hollywood, some of the best horror/monster/sci-fi stories have been coming from elsewhere including this one by director Bong Joon Ho. The story is standard monster fare but with a certain excitement that hasn't been seen in Hollywood monster blockbusters as of late. The aquatic mutant creature is ultimately taken down not by the government or some elite military force, but by regular people who found themselves in a bad, monster-filled situation.

Question 27

A nameless, faceless, and formless monster is always the worst.

Movie Monster Quiz - Splinter

Even for a low-budget film, this prickly horror flick only made a total domestic gross of about 14 thousand dollars. Though, for those who saw it, it's a terrifying story of a relentless monster that's more of a virus or mold than anything else. Spiny growths infect the folks unfortunate enough to stop at a small setting of a gas station and horror, as it often does in horror movies, ensues. The monster is never named and its motivations seem only to consume and infect but that makes it -- in its own way -- more terrifying than your standard movie monster.

Question 28

This was more of a fantasy movie than anything else but the monsters are top notch!

Movie Monster Quiz - pans labyrinth

Guillermo del Toro sticks to mostly heightened fantasy films but they all have more than a few moments that qualify as downright horrific. This 2006 film was basically a gritty fairy tale but it still had one of the downright creepiest monsters in all of cinema. During the events of the movie, the main character has to venture into the lair of a monster dubbed the "Pale Man" but his lack of sun is the least creepy thing about him. The short scene offers some of the best tension in the entire film and should make anyone wary of anything sitting TOO still.

Question 29

For a kid's movie, this monster's origin was particularly dark.

Movie Monster Quiz - Monster House

The creation of the monster in this movie was beyond tragic having a large woman being held by a circus as a side show, being saved by the man she loved, and tragically dying in an accident while building their dream home. For a character just wanting to be left alone, she sure was dealt a rotten hand.

Question 30

These alien monsters take a few different forms but their "Shitweasel" one is the worst

There are certainly some weird moments in this 2003 film based on a story by Stephen King. Most of them revolve around Morgan Freeman's inexplicably strange character choices but what the film got right is how horrible an alien invasion would be. Portraying aliens in their various evolution/reproduction cycles from a red mold all the way to hulking gray alien. It's literal larval stage might be the absolute worst. Once an infected human victim gestates the creature, it violently bursts out of his or her's rear end which characters in the movie grant the colorful name of "Shit weasel" to.

Question 31

Some monsters are better if left in the dark

Movie Monster Quiz - The Descent

This monster movie should receive all the praise in the world for portraying the isolating danger of exploring caves and how claustrophobic things can feel when things go wrong. It shouldn't, however, get any kudos any time the subterranean monsters are shown in any amount of light. The humanoid monsters in this film are infinitely terrifying when initially shown as fleeting blurs just out of reach of flashlights and the film would have been better off having never shown as much detail as it ultimately did. Still, we're not going caving anytime soon just in case.

Question 32

A refreshingly unique take on movie vampires.

Movie Monster Quiz - 30 days of night

Though many will argue that the comic it was based on was way better than the film audiences got (it is!), this film did bring a different kind of vampire story to theaters. Most every vampire story keeps the deadly aversion to sunlight in it and this one plays on that heavily but adds the twist of giving the humans no chance of relying on daybreak in Barrow, Alaska. The frozen setting also gave the characters an environment not often seen in vampire films.

Question 33

Furthering the distrust of any sort of clown.

Movie Monster Quiz - Killer Klowns from Outer Space

This film predates any ITeration (get it!?) of the clown story most point to as most horrible but this one somehow packed in the creepiness even more. When a humongous circus tent-like structure lands in a town and evil and murderous clowns start wreaking havoc everywhere they go, what's a town to do? Well, they fight the circus-themed alien invaders the best they can until they stumble on their bright red weak spots, their noses. A sequel has reportedly been in production for a very long while but most would probably agree with this terror staying dead forever.

Question 34

This horror anthology was equal parts goofy and nightmare-inducing.

Movie Monster Quiz - Creepshow

Regardless of where the ideas came from, Stephen King writes a good scary story. An often forgotten one comes from the 1982 anthology film where he played the main character. The film depicts a number of frightening stories but this one is particularly dreadful for just how lonely it is. A farmer finds a meteorite that infects him and everything it touches with a green, grassy, mold-like substance. It can't be washed off, he can't be cured, and is eventually overrun by it.

Question 35

The nameless entity in this movie is a relentless foe!

Movie Monster Quiz - It Follows

David Robert Mitchell wrote this 2014 American supernatural psychological horror film that might be the best story of a movie monster basically being an STD. Part ghost, part evil spirit, and all horrifying the entity relentlessly follows whomever is infected with it at a slow, endless, walking pace that provides a whole new level of terror. Sure, characters can try and run away from it but when it appears as almost anyone, how can you know if you're ever in the clear?
