Only A World Traveler Can Match The Statues To The Locations

Those of you who have traveled the world should have no problem passing this quiz even though some of these statues you may have just read about and never actually seen in real life. At the very least, with some background information and artist style, you should be able to make an educated guess. Some of these, however, are hard to pinpoint... especially all the Buddha's. We've tried to have a balanced selection of east and west, north and south so that people from all four corners of the earth may have a chance to do well on this quiz. If you find yourself getting most of the questions wrong, we think it's time you start taking more vacation days and just explore this earth that we live on.

Turn every corner, hop on every train, and don't look back until you've come full circle. There is so much out there that would make anyone like to move somewhere else. Some may even come to appreciate their own home even more than they did before. Whoever gets 100% on this quiz, must be ready to branch out and start exploring Outer Space, because they've seen everything! We hear Mars is really nice this time of year.

Question 1

Where is this located?

The statue of liberty was designed by French sculpture Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel. It is considered a neoclassical piece and is made entirely of copper. The statue was dedicated with a ceremony on October 28, 1886. Lady Liberty stands tall with her torch reaching a height of 305 feet (96 meters) above the ground, and the copper statue itself is 151 feet (63 meters) in height. While originally the color of copper, the statue is now green do to a patina.

Where is this located?

This statue, called "Christ the Redeemer" was dedicated in October of 1931 and designed by sculptor Paul Landowski. It was sculpted out of soapstone and stands at a height of 125 feet (38 meters) with its pedestal. In 2007, it was listed as one of the new seven wonders of the world, and it was dedicated a Natural Historical Heritage of its country in 2001. You might remember that this statue was an icon for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Where is this located?

This statue made of copper is named "Charging Bull" and weighs 7,100 pounds (3,200 kg). It was unofficially installed in 1989 by Arturo Di Modica as part of the guerrilla art movement that began in the UK in the 1970's. This movement is meant to be different from traditional art in a way that it does not have boundaries or separation from its environment. It was meant as a fight back to the movement of marketing into the artistic world.

Where is this located?

This marble statue dates back to the 1500's and was created by Italian sculptor Michelangelo. Originally, it was meant to be placed on top of a cathedral. Weighing David in at six tons, people quickly realized that it would be impossible to lift the statue to that height. Instead, a group of artists came together to find the perfect place to display it in the city. It was placed in a city square until the 1800's when it was moved to a gallery protect it from damage.

Where is this located?

This sculpture is called "The Thinker" and was originally named "The Poet". It was inspired by Dante's "The Devine Comedy" as it was originally commissioned as part of a larger piece called "The Gates of Hell". It is made of bronze and was created by Auguste Rodin in the 1880's. Twenty-eight full-sized castings have been made of the structure as well as many other versions of different sizes including one in Tokyo, and another in New York at the University of Columbia.

Where is this located?

This display consists of seven ancient lion statues. Although it is hard to say how many were there when they were first built, archeologists predict that there were twelve to sixteen of them. They have been dated back to have been built out of stone in the sixth to seventh century BCE. It's so humbling to stand beside such an old structure and to try to imagine what the people of the time might have been thinking when viewing the same work.

Where is this located?

This copper statue depicts a mermaid sitting on a rock right by the water and is appropriately named "The Little Mermaid". It was created in 1913 by Edvard Eriksen and stands at a height of 1.25 meters, weighing in at 175 kilograms. The body was modeled after Eriksen's wife, but the face was inspired by a ballerina named Ellen Price. The statue has been restored many times due to vandalism since the 1960's and this poor mermaid has been decapitated multiple times.

Where is this located?

This is an outdoor bronze statue of Amitābha Buddha and is located on the grounds of a Buddhist temple. It sits at over eleven meters tall, making it the second tallest Buddha statue in the country in which it resides. It is also one of the country's National Treasures. Before this stood a wooden statue that was completed in 1243 after ten years of labor, but it was soon damaged by a storm and therefore replaced by this bronze one completed around 1252.

Where is this located?

This standing Buddha statue is called Laykyun Setkyar and it is the second tallest statue in the world (the tallest is coming up next). It stands at 116 meters tall and took twelve years to build. Construction began in 1996 and was completed in 2008 to depict Gautama Buddha who is known as THE Buddha in the Buddhist community. The sleeping Buddha next to this statue represents Gautama Buddha at his death, entering the next state of parinirvana and leaving the cycle of karma.

Where is this located?

The Spring Temple Buddha depicts Vairocana Buddha and is the tallest statue in the world. It stands at 128 meters (two times the size of the Statue of Liberty) and its construction began in 1997 and was completed in September of 2008. The statue is made of copper and stands on top of a Buddhist monastery. Even though this statue is the tallest in the world, it isn't very visited due to its location. The closest town is a two-hour bus ride away.

Where is this located?

This statue is the last of our Buddha series. It is also a depiction of Gautama Buddha and was built in the seventh century, making it the oldest of the Buddha statues we have presented in this quiz. It is made entirely of limestone, and when it was found in 1951, it was found broken into several pieces. It has since been restored and measuring up at 37 feet (11.53 meters), it is the tallest of the ancient free-standing images in its country.

Where is this located?

This statue by Nikolai Nikitin and Yevgeny Vuchetich is called "The Motherland Calls" and was erected on October 15, 1967. At the time of its dedication, this statue was the tallest in the world, measuring in at eighty-five meters. However, it still stands as the tallest statue of a woman in the world, and the tallest in Europe. It is supposed to represent the motherland calling on its people to defend against the enemy and is a commemoration of the Battle of Stalingrad.

Where is this located?

The "Venus de Milo", also known as the "Aphrodite of Milos" is one of the most famous sculptures of Ancient Greece. Though originally thought to be created by Praxiteles, it was later discovered to be the work of Alexandros of Antioch and dates back to somewhere between the year 130 and 100 BCE. Aphrodite may be old, but she still looks great, despite having lost both of her arms. She is made entirely of marble and is slightly larger than life-size.

Where is this located?

This statue is called "The Angel of Independence" and is more commonly referred to as "El Ángel", but its official name is "Monumento a la Independencia". It was built in 1910 by an architect named Antonio Rivas Mercado to commemorate the war of the independence of its country. It was originally made of bronze, but during its restoration in 2006, the statue of the angel at the top of the column was covered in 24K gold. It weighs in at seven tons.

Where is this located?

The Sphinx is a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion. This is a limestone statue of one cut directly from the bedrock. It is believed to have been built in the 2500's BCE. It isn't until about 2000 years later that it is commonly called the Sphinx as there is no historical reference of its name. From its paws to its tail, it is 73 meters long and it is about 20 meters high from its base to its head.

Where is this located?

These statues were carved between 1250 and 1500 and were restored by Chilean archaeologist Claudio Cristino in the 1990s. There are about 900 of these statues and the largest of these statues is called Paro and was almost ten meters high and weighed about 82 tonnes. The statues were toppled over during the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth century, possibly due to European contact or tribal ward on the land. The statues are believed to be representative of political and religious power.

Where is this located?

This monument was built to commemorate the sixteenth American leader, Honest Abe. The statue was designed by Daniel Chester French and was carved by the Piccirilli Brothers. The statue took four years to build and was finished in 1920 and has since been a major tourist attraction, especially for all the Americans across the country. It was originally intended to be 10 feet tall but ended up being 19 feet tall at a scale that would make the standing Abe 28 feet tall.

Where is this located?

The piece, commonly referred to as "The Bean", is officially named "Cloud Gate". It is made of 168 stainless steel plates welded together and its artist is Anish Kapoor. This artwork is a major tourist attraction since its reflective surface gives a wonderful view of the skyline of its city. From the underneath side, it is somewhat cone-shaped with a twelve-foot arch and can, therefore, give you a picture with endless reflections of yourself. This piece was put in place on May 15, 2006.

Where is this located?

The lady of justice is a common figure in many works of art, but can you pinpoint which specific one this is and where it is located? The lady of justice is modeled after Lustitia or Justitia meaning "justice" in Latin, equivalent to the Greek Themis and Dike. The scale without its base represents the evidence, which should stand on its own. She is usually blindfolded (though this one isn't) because justice is blind, and she holds a sword, which represented authority in ancient times.

Where is this located?

This statue of the Hindu god, Vishnu stands at 23 meters in height and is an easy site to visit as it is only a 10-15 minute drive from the airport. The crown is planned to be complete with gold plating and paintings as well as special lighting. It is located in a park that is a very popular venue for concerts due to its location and beautiful scenery. The space in which it is located can accommodate about 7000 people.

Where is this located?

"The Veiled Virgin" is a statue by Giovanni Strazza from an unknown year, but it was probably carved from Carra marble by the Roman sculptor in the early 1850s. The detail of the statue is amazing with the flow and transparency of the veil so realistic that it looks as if you could lift it right off of the face. It is only nineteen inches tall, but it has a large magnitude. Though originating from Rome, the work was moved to its current location in 1856.

Where is this located?

These statues are located near what is thought to be a royal tomb dating back to the first century BCE. The heads of these statues are damaged by what seems to be an intentional force and not the natural erosion of time. Sadly, they have not been restored but maybe that just gives them that much more charm. These statues are located on a mountain that has been made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. Can you name the place?

Where is this located?

The colossal head as shown in this picture is one of many around the site of its origins. There are seventeen known examples around the area that date back to at least 900 BCE. They were mostly carved out of spherical boulders. The smallest are weighed at 6 tons while the largest is estimated at 40 to 50 tons. The faces are flat with large cheeks and hanging earlobes. They are in headdresses and seem to be slightly cross-eyed.

Where is this located?

This statue is one of Honest Abe and a regular guy representing the "common man". The original is a smaller version of this piece made of bronze that is located in Pennsylvania, created by J. Seward Johnson in 1991. More recently a larger version was made and erected in a new location. Can you name where it is? In this version of the artwork, Abe Lincoln stands at a whopping 25 feet, right in the heart of downtown of this city.

Where is this located?

This statue by Italian sculptor Michelangelo and is called Moses. It was commissioned by Pope Julius II as his tomb in 1505. He died in 1513, and the work was finally completed in 1545. This artwork is described in many famous pieces of literature, as well. In the "Life of Michelangelo", Giorgio Vasari wrote, "the hairs, so difficult to render in sculpture, being so soft and downy that it seems as if the iron chisel must have become a brush."

Where is this located?

Heroes' square is one of the main squares in this city and displays the Seven Chieftain of the Magyars. Construction of the monument began in 1896, which is fairly recent for an old European city such as this one. The column is topped by a depiction of Archangel Gabriel. At the time of construction, the city was under a different empire than it is today. When the statues were damaged in WWII, some of the statues were replaced with those of more fitting leaders.

Where is this located?

This is our hardest one yet. You may recognize the statue, but be careful! This statue has been replicated many times and while you might no the original location, we are asking for the location of the specific one you see in the picture. Don't sweat it if you can't get it, it's a really really REALLY tough question. The original statue called Porcellino (meaning little pig) was made in the 1600s in Italy by Pietro Tacca and was made of bronze.

Where is this located?

In 1953, Alan Wood managed to ride Curio, the Brumby mare, for 10 seconds. This is being depicted in the statue commissioned in 1991 and created by sculptor Ben Van Zetter. Most riders fell off after three seconds and the horse remained unridden for eight years before Wood came along. The statue is scaled at one and a half times lifesize made of cold cast bronze and weighing in at 2 tons. Curio passed in 1970 at the age of 28.

Question 29

Where is this located?

"Bird Girl" stands at fifty inches tall and is cast in bronze. The sculpture was made in 1936 by Sylvia Shaw Judson as a commission for a garden sculpture and became famous in 1994 when it appeared on the cover of a non-fiction novel called "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". The most famous of the castings, however, is the one purchased by a family who named it "Little Wendy" and placed in a cemetery. This is the one we are asking you to locate.

Question 30

Where is this located?

Called Discobolus or "discus thrower", this statue is a Greek sculpture dating back to around 460 to 450 BCE. The original Greek statue is lost, but there are many Roman replicas that have survived the test of time in both bronze and marble. The version that was first discovered was a copy that dates to the first century of the common era. It was made famous by an influential Italian family and was even sought after by Adolf Hitler, but where is it now?

Question 31

Where is this located?

This beautifully intricate work, again by Italian sculptor Michelangelo, was a renaissance work produces in the 1400s. It is made entirely of Carrara marble and was commissioned for the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères. Being the only work that Michelangelo ever signed, it depicts the body of Jesus laying on the lap of his mother Mary after his crucifixion. The piece is called The Pieta meaning "the pity" in Italian. Though very detailed and beautifully completed, the work took two years to sculpt.

Where is this located?

This statue is pointed east, toward the birthplace of the person who it depicts, Genghis Khan. It was designed by sculptor D. Erdenebileg and architect J. Enkhjargal and erected in 2008. Standing at a height of 40 meters, this statue is quite large and impressive. It is made entirely of stainless steel and visitors can walk to the head of the horse for a breathtaking panoramic view by passing through the chest and neck of the horse. Its cost was reported at 4.1 million USD.

Where is this located?

You may be able to recognize the subjects of these statues and that will really help you with figuring out where they are located. The two men depicted are father and son and it is forbidden to photograph them separately. They are meant to represent two strong leaders together and taking a picture of each one separately is frowned upon. The first statue of the father was erected in 1971 and the one of his son was erected in 2012.

Where is this located?

The Erawan Museum is depicted by the statue of the elephant-god with three heads. It stands at a height of 29 meters and is made entirely of bronze weighing in at 250 tons. The museum located at the site has three floors that are set up in the way that the Hindu religion represents the world. The first floor is the underworld and the second is earth. These two floors are located in the pedestal of the sculpture. The third floor, representing Heaven is located in the belly of the elephant.

Question 35

Where is this located?

This statue is a shrine made entirely of bronze that is dedicated to a native leader of the land in which it stands who defeated the Spanish soldiers that were led by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. The shrine supposedly sits in the very spot that the battle had taken place and the statue stands at a great height of 20 meters. The sculpture represents the warrior's readiness to defend his land against aggressors with a shield in one hand and a sword in the other.
