When J.R.R. Tolkien first published The Lord of the Rings, nobody understood it. Fantasy hadn't become the genre that it is today, and most people did "get" this weird story about elves and men, hobbits and wizards. What is a hobbit, anyway?
In the seventies, however, The Lord of the Rings suddenly peaked in popularity. "Frodo Lives!" Time Square declared. The Lord of the Rings launched a new era of fantasy obsession, until finally, in the early 2000s, Peter Jackson made the beloved books into an enormous success.
