Only A True Nerd Can Name All These Marvel And DC Actors!

Though the property had been around since the late 1930s, Superman didn’t make it in any notable form to the silver screen until 1978. Given how popular most superheroes are today, it’s tough to imagine that Hollywood executives wouldn’t give the sci-fi/fantasy IP a fair shake until Star Wars came around and revolutionized the box office a year earlier. Superman would go on to be a major success, and the film spawned a superhero cinematic movement which is still going strong today.

Despite the unmitigated success of such productions, filmmakers for the longest time refused to gamble on any Marvel or DC property lingering just outside of public consciousness; we’ve seen tons of movies featuring Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man, but only recently have heroes like Aquaman or Wonder Woman been given the green light to play the role of primary protagonist in their own feature films. Ten years ago the prospect of obscure characters like Captain Marvel or Gambit receiving their own big-budget releases would have seemed unthinkable. Today, it seems increasingly likely that every last Marvel and DC hero and villain will make it to the big screen at some point.

Of course, these movies would be nothing if not for their star power, and it’s gotten to a point where some actors are virtually inseparable from their onscreen personas. With that said, only a true nerd can come up with the names of all of these Marvel and DC actors and actresses.

Question 1

Recognize this Undercover Agent?

Scarlett Johansson

A product of the Cold War-inspired paranoia of the time, Natasha Romanoff, first introduced to the Marvel mythos in 1964’s Tales of Suspense #52, was an ex-soviet spy initially slated to be one of Tony Stark’s main antagonists. However, she eventually defected to the United States and began working as a double agent as a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. Better known by her hero alias of Black Widow, this character made her proper debut in Marvel’s cinematic universe in 2010 with the release of Iron Man 2 and has continued as a series staple throughout the four Avengers movies.

Question 2

Familiar with this Howling Commando?

Samuel L Jackson

Originally debuted in 1963 and created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, Nick Fury was originally envisioned as a James bond-esque Cold War spy. The first series in which he was included, titled Nick Fury and His Howling Commandos, saw him as the leader of a racially diverse band of soldiers in the Second World War. Fury’s character has evolved significantly from those days, and most Marvel fans now associate him with an actor famous for his role in Quentin Tarantino's hit film Pulp Fiction. Included in 2008’s Iron Man—the film which kicked off the modern Marvel cinematic universe—Fury’s influence has been felt in just about every subsequent movie project.

Question 3

Recognize him Without the Suit on?

Robert Downey Jr.

First introduced in 1963’s Tales of Suspense #39 and given his own standalone series half a decade later, Marvel’s Iron Man stands as one of the most recognizable superheroes of the modern era. Selected as the hero to truly kick off Marvel's fabled cinematic universe, this character is about as important as it gets when it comes to MCU lore. What’s more, this actor may well be the most important to the overall franchise, and, at this point, his name is almost entirely synonymous with his role in The Avengers. An eccentric billionaire on screen and a larger-than-life actor offscreen, fans have often had a tough time distinguishing reality from fiction when it comes to this man’s portrayal of Marvel’s famous Iron Avenger.

Question 4

Know Cap's Second in Command?

Emily VanCamp

Introduced in Marvel’s Tales of Suspense #75 in 1966 and created—as many famous Marvel heroes and heroines were—by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, Sharon Carter, also known as Agent 13, is an ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and spy most famously known as Captain America’s love interest in many of the character’s incarnations. Though originally portrayed as the younger sister of Cap’s wartime sweetheart Peggy Carter, Marvel brought her into the modern era as Peggy’s great niece, which is still slightly weird. Sharon Carter has made an appearance in all three mainline Captain America movies and was portrayed by the same actress each time. The character played a role in an early draft of Avengers: Infinity War, but ultimately didn’t make the final cut.

Question 5

Know this Galactic Guardian?

Chris Pratt

Perhaps most famous for his hilarious antics in the television series Parks and Recreation, tons of Marvel fans have jokingly question whether this actor is really capable of fulfilling his role as a galactic guardian. Stepping into the shoes of the hapless space pirate Peter Quill, this actor teams up with a ragtag group of adventurers in an effort to defend one of the universe’s most powerful artifacts in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. This crew famously got together with The Avengers in 2018’s Infinity War, though the outcome of that particular meetup still has some fans reeling. This actor is also famous for his dinosaur-taming role in the new Jurassic Park movies.

Question 6

Familiar with Tony Stark's Best Friend?

Jon Favreau

Harold Joseph Hogan, better known as “Happy Hogan” in most of his comic and film incarnations, is the best friend, chauffeur, and ex-bodyguard of Marvel superhero staple Tony Stark. He has long stood as a prominent figure in both the Iron Man and Avengers series of movies and acts as Stark’s wingman and confidant in matters both social and business-related. The man who portrayed Hogan, however, is actually more famous for his directorial work and served as the director for the first two films in the Iron Man trilogy. He was unfortunately dropped in favor of Shane Black when the time came to make a third film, though he did agree to reprise his role.

Question 7

Know this hawk-eyed Hero?

Jeremy Renner

Clinton Francis Barton—better known by his superhero alias of Hawkeye—is a Marvel hero first introduced in Tales of Suspense #57 which was released in 1964. Earning his name thanks to his incredible skills as an archer, Hawkeye is famous because he is one of a select number of Avengers who doesn’t actually have any superhuman attributes. What’s more, the character is actually supposed to be deaf in the comics, though this facet was left out of his silver screen adaptation. Interestingly, this actor made a small cameo in 2011’s Thor before he made his official debut a year later in the first Avengers movie.

Question 8

Who was the Man Behind the Mask?

Tom Hardy

A man of many talents, this actor has had a hand in tons of iconic performances over the past decade. DC seems to think that he has a knack for playing villains, as he has twice been cast in roles which could be considered morally gray at best. In 2012, he stepped into the shoes of Batman’s notorious enemy Bane, a role for which he is still fondly remembered. Earlier this year, he was cast as Eddie, one part of the infamous symbiotic duo known as Venom. While that film wasn’t quite as well received, it was still impactful, and DC fans certainly hope to see this man return to the silver screen later down the line.

Question 9

Keeping Up?

Ezra Miller

Though Marvel has had a tremendous amount of success with their cinematic universe, things have been much less smooth for DC. Beginning with the hit-and-miss Man of Steel in 2013 and nearly grinding to a halt after the unfortunate S------ Squad in 2016, it hasn’t been easy for Detective Comics. Internal strife seems to continually mount as the fate of The Flash film seems to be up in the air. The project, originally slated for a 2019 release, now seems to have been delayed to 2020 at the earliest. The actor commissioned to play the ultra-fast hero made his series debut in 2016’s Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and is scheduled to reprise his role in the upcoming Flashpoint.

Question 10

Recognize this Amazonian Princess?

Gal Gadot

Released in June of 2017, Wonder Woman is popularly considered to be on of DC’s most successful films since the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight trilogy wrapped up back in 2012. Telling the tale of one of the most important female leads in DC’s mythology, the film predates Marvel’s Captain Marvel by a full two years. An origin story of sorts, the film revolves around Diana Prince, a powerful Amazonian warrior who is slowly introduced to—and subsequently comes to the defence of—a broader outside world. The winner of a Saturn Award for Best Actress, Wonder Woman’s leading lady will not soon be forgotten by the movie-going masses.

Question 11

Know this Iron Antagonist?

Jeff Bridges Iron Monger

Introduced—and subsequently eliminated—in the original Iron Man movie, this character is perhaps one of the most uniquely human antagonist in the entirety of the hero’s lore. A business partner of Tony Stark’s father, Obadiah Stane sought to eliminate Tony Stark in a coup to take over Stark Industries because he believed Howard Stark’s son to be running his business into the ground. When that fails, Stane uses technology he appropriated from Stark Industries to become the Iron Monger, a villain very similar in nature to Iron Man himself. Though the actor behind this character didn’t get to spend much time in Marvel’s new universe, he is fondly remembered for his roles outside of the MCU.

Question 12

Know Superman's True Kryptonite?

Jesse Eisenberg

Superman’s most well-known antagonist, Lex Luthor first appeared in an April 1940 issue of Action Comics. A super-genius villain and business mogul behind Lexcorp., Luthor has undergone many visual and stylistic changes over his extensive history. He is primarily known as a balding, middle aged man typically sporting formal attrite, but depictions have varied wildly since his initial inclusion in the comics. In 2015, this actor was chosen to play the role of Lex Luthor in the Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice crossover film. A controversial choice, fans remain split on the studio’s casting choice for the film’s villain.

Question 13

Remember this Man of Steel Villain?

Michael Shannon

Next to Luthor, General Zod is perhaps the most enigmatic and personal villain in Superman’s canonical continuity. Unlike Luthor, Zod is Kryptonian. As such, he exhibits the same sort of apparent superhuman powers as the Man of Steel himself. Once inextricably associated with Terence Stamp thanks to his role in the first two Superman movies from 1978 and 1980, this actor now portrays Zod in DC’s new cinematic universe. In Zack Snyder’s 2013 Man of Steel film, Zod came to Earth in search of Kael-El and sought to repopulate the planet with genetically-engineered Kryptonians. Superman is eventually forced to terminate Zod after a fierce battle in Metropolis.

Question 14

Recognize This Trickster God?

Tom Hiddleston

Marvel’s cinematic universe was initially criticized for lacking any truly captivating villains. The first phase of Marvel films were closely compared to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy thanks to their close release dates, and the likes of Whiplash and The Abomination could hardly compare to the likes of Heath Ledger’s Joker or Tom Hardy’s Bane. 2011’s Thor would introduce Loki, the first proper villain in Marvel’s new cinematic continuity. Known as the God of Mischief, Loki sabotages his adopted brother’s coronation and serves as the primary antagonist of the first Avengers film. He has since made appearances in tons of other Marvel productions and is portrayed by one of the series’ most beloved actors.

Question 15

Recognize Him From A Different Film?

Anthony Hopkins

Unsurprisingly, Marvel borrowed quite a bit from Norse mythology during the development of Thor’s backstory. His biological father, Odin, is the king of Asgard and was first introduced to Marvel’s canon all the way back in 1962 shortly after the introduction of Thor himself. Though most Marvel actors are primarily famous for their roles in the MCU, the actor the studio tapped to play the role of Odin in 2011’s Thor was far more recognizable for one of his previous roles. The man behind the infamously creepy Hannibal Lector in the 1990 Halloween-time classic The Silence of the Lambs, most will think of that role long before they think of Odin.

Question 16

Is There Any Honor Among Thieves?

Will Smith

DC’s 2016 action flick S------ Squad promised to flip the script by focusing primarily on villains as opposed to their do-gooder counterparts. Though it sounded like an excellent film adaptation in concept, this villainous outing was critically panned and is often thought to be one of the lowest quality comic-based films of the modern era. That said, this actor’s portrayal of the morally gray Deadshot was a highlight and partially made up for the portrayal of the Joker character. Harley Quinn may have been on all of the movie’s marketing material, but the only worthwhile story in the film comes courtesy of this man’s skills as an actor.

Question 17

Remember Thor's Girlfriend?

Natalie Portman

An actress perhaps more famous for her role in the Star Wars prequel series, she plays Jane Foster, Thor’s love interest in the 2011 film as well as in Thor: The Dark World. Unfortunately, this actress had a pretty notable falling-out with the Marvel cinematic universe, and she did not reprise her role in the third Thor film. First introduced in 1962’s Journey Into Mystery #84, the movies portray her as an astrophysicist who runs into an unlikely otherworlder while on a research trip to New Mexico. Though she has since stated that she may be open to returning to her role in the Marvel universe, it is unknown if Foster will ever again meet Thor following their implied breakup in Thor: Ragnarok.

Question 18

Recognize This Marine Marvel?

Jason Momoa

Aquaman doesn’t often get much love from DC’s fanbase and is sometimes thought of as the ugly duckling of the Justice League. That said, things changed drastically for the King of the Seven Seas when this actor was chosen to portray him in 2018’s Aquaman film. A major departure from the character’s typical blonde, clean-cut look, this muscular actor modernized the character and made him look much more physically formidable than previous incarnations of the character. There is still a lot to be explored in DC’s fledgling cinematic universe, but this improved version of Aquaman seems like a major step in the right direction.

Question 19

So What If I'm Crazy?

Margot Robbie

Back in 2016, it was almost impossible to go even a few hours without seeing this actress adorned in face paint and weidling a bat in some sort of marketing material for the then-upcoming S------ Squad film. Unfortunately, many DC fans found both her character and the movie as a whole to be far too over-the-top. With filmgoers already tired of her by the time the house lights dimmed, it isn’t difficult to imagine that a film primarily focused on her portrayal of Batman’s Harley Quinn didn’t go over all that well. She may have looked the part, but pleasing eye candy does not a solid cinematic experience make. That said, she is well-known for her fantastic role in 2013’s Leonardo Dicaprio-lead The Wolf of Wall Street.

Question 20

Remember this Winter Soldier?

Sebastian Stan

A close childhood friend of Steve Rogers, James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes was protective of his physically meek friend and actively discouraged him from joining the United States war effort due to his frail condition. Though the two eventually found themselves joining the war together, things soon went south after Rogers was presumed to be K.I.A. In The Winter Soldier, marvel’s second movie featuring Captain America, Bucky has been brainwashed by Hydra and carries out their bidding with no regard for his former friends. The following movies have seen him regaining his memory, though it was discovered in Civil War that a specific trigger word could cause him to return into his Winter Soldier mindset.

Question 21

Know this Angry Avenger?

Mark Ruffalo

Though he wasn’t the first actor to land the role of Bruce Banner in Marvel’s cinematic universe, he has been a major part of the current Avengers trilogy and is set to continue his role in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, which is set to release in 2019. A major departure from Lou Ferrigno, the ultra-hefty actor famous for playing the part in early onscreen iterations of the character, this actor has introduced a new set of emotion to the previously one-dimensional green giant. Though The Hulk hasn’t gotten a stand-alone movie since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, this generation’s Bruce Banner is best known for his constant anger as famously expressed in the first Avengers flick.

Question 22

Recognize Rescue?

Gwyneth Paltrow

Pepper Potts is a supporting character in the Iron Man comics and was first introduced to the series in 1963’s Tales of Suspense #45. Stark’s primary love interest, she is said to have come to Tony’s attention after catching an accounting error made by Stark Industries in the original comics. Appearing in all three of the MCU’s standalone Iron Man films, Potts enters into a relationship with Stark and comes to serve as the CEO of Stark Industries by the third film. Though their relationship has wavered since that film’s release, Potts is said to be intrinsic to the plot of the upcoming fourth avengers movie in which she is slated to return as Rescue, her heroic alter-ego.

Question 23

Did He Have Anyone Laughing?

Jared Leto

As previously mentioned, DC has had a pretty rough go of things since they first unveiled their plans of a shared cinematic universe in 2013. Man of Steel was relatively mediocre, and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice failed to win audiences over. That said, while most of the actors and actresses associated with these projects escaped relatively unscathed, this actor, infamous for his portrayal of the Joker in S------ Squad, was marred by the movie’s critical failure. An egregious downgrade from Heath Ledger’s terrific performance in 2008’s The Dark Knight, it is unlikely that we will ever see him reprise his role as the Clown Prince of Crime.

Question 24

Batman or Superman?

Ben Affleck

While there wasn’t any direct comparison available for Henry Cavill's performance in 2013’s Man of Steel thanks to the relative lack of modern movies based on Superman, the actor portraying the Dark Knight in 2016’s Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice was bound to draw comparisons to Christian Bale, the actor who had assumed the role in The Dark Knight Rises just four years previous. Audience reaction to the DCEU’s epic crossover was relatively lukewarm, and there have been rumors of this actor stepping away from the role of Bruce Wayne alongside Henry Cavill, who is rumored to be giving up on Superman.

Question 25

Who Played the First Avenger?

Chris Evans

Captain America is one of the most iconic superheroes of all time; though he isn’t quite as recognizable as Batman and doesn’t boast the same sort of power as Superman, his awesome shield and unwavering sense of justice make him a hard man to dislike. What’s more, a relative underdog thanks to his frail physical stature in the beginning of 2011’s Captain America film, he is a very relatable and human character when compared to the larger-than-life bombast of someone like Tony Stark. The actor behind the red, white, and blue shield is also a fan favorite, and Marvel lovers the world over can’t wait to see him in the role once more in Avengers: Endgame.

Question 26

Familiar with DC's Villains?

Jay Hernandez

Portrayed by a lesser-known actor in 2016’s S------ Squad, Chato Santana—one of several names associated with the El Diablo figure in the past—is a remarkably human character. He isn’t outright bad like some of his unlikely cohorts, yet he tows a morally gray line. A pyromaniac with powers to match, El Diablo is a fearsome figure, and his head-to-toe tattoos communicate that from the outset. Yet, misunderstood to his very core, he sacrifices himself in order to ensure the defeat of Enchantress in the closing minutes of the otherwise underwhelming movie. This character was definitely one of the better aspects of this film, and an El Diablo solo project may not be the worst idea for DC’s universe.

Question 27

Know this Superman Side Character?

Laurence Fishburne

Perry White, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet, didn’t make his series debut in the comics; he was first introduced as the paper’s editor in a radio serial titled The Adventures of Superman in 1940 and was added to the comic storyline later that year. What’s more, White actually isn’t the first character to hold that position with the Daily Planet, as early Superman stories made mention of an editor named George Taylor. In 2013’s Man of Steel, White is portrayed by an actor universally famous for his role in the Wachowski brothers sci-fi thriller The Matrix. Red pill or blue pill?

Question 28

Still Recognize Her?

Hayley Atwell

Peggy Carter is one of the strangest characters in Marvel history; while most superheroes and supporting characters are portrayed as being ageless, Carter actually ages considerably in the new Captain America films. The wartime sweetheart of Steve Rogers, their relationship is interrupted when Cap falls into suspended animation during the war. The two reunite years later in Winter Soldier when Peggy is shown to be in her 90s. The spritely actress who portrayed a young Carter in Marvel’s show Agent Carter has since moved on from the role, though fans continue to celebrate her contribution to the studio’s cinematic universe.

Question 29

Who is Lois Lane?

Amy Adams

The DC cast list is sort of up in the air right now, and it’s tough to imagine where all the pieces will fall by the time the Man of Steel once again takes to the silver screen. That said, this actress, who portrayed Superman’s well-known flame Lois Lane in the 2013 adaptation, has stated as per an interview with Variety that she may well be out of the DC universe for the foreseeable future. As it stands, actress Nicole Kidman seems to be the one stepping into the role of Superman’s red-headed love interest. That said, DC fans the world over have celebrated the 2013 version of Lane and are hopeful for the franchises future.

Question 30

Know Cap's Greatest Enemy?

Hugo Weaving

Red Skull is something of a controversial villain these days thanks to his association with the German army during the Second World War. In the eponymously titled Captain America film from 1990, this famously deformed villain was portrayed as having been a part of the Italian military. That said, Red Skull was a major part of the 2011 Captain America: The First Avenger movie. The film’s primary antagonist and agent of Hydra, this character was portrayed by an actor much more famous for another role. The nefarious Agent Smith in the Matrix trilogy, this actor may have been more recognizable without all of the special effects and pounds of makeup.

Question 31

Who is this Man of Steel?

Henry Cavill

Despite arguably being the most recognizable superhero of all time, DC has had a difficult time appropriately casting the character in their recent DCEU films. While the current Man of Steel actor did an admirable job in the 2013 film of the same name, he may be moving on from the role. In an interview with Aquaman’s Jason Momoa conducted by Huffington Post, the actor stated that he understands if the actor behind Superman wants to walk away from DC. The property has yet to score any major points with audiences since DC first unveiled their rebooted silver screen canon, and the future seems uncertain for the famous Kryptonian hero.

Question 32

Recognize Bruce Wayne's Butler?

Jeremy Irons

This actor faced an uphill battle when he signed on to portray Alfred Pennyworth in 2016’s DC project Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice; audiences were still familiar with Michael Caine’s iconic performance in the Nolan Dark Knight trilogy, and those were certainly some big shoes to fill. Though he did an admirable job, the film fell flat in other areas and left fans hoping for something more. That said, he will be reprising his role as Bruce Wayne’s posh butler in an upcoming DC film titled The Batman. Fans have high hopes for the upcoming movie and would love to see the series return to the heights it enjoyed during the early 2010’s.

Question 33

Familiar with this Dark Knight?

Christian Bale

An older generation will inextricably associate actor Adam West with DC’s famous caped crusader, while their children or grandchildren will probably think of Ben Affleck as The Batman. Yet, there have been tons of actors who have donned the Dark Knight’s iconic costume over the years. Those in their early 20’s will most likely first associate this famous English actor with the role. In stark contrast to his gravely, ultra-serious portrayal of Gotham’s guardian, he picked up a ton of steam as an actor following his starring role in the cerebral psychological thriller movie adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ A------- Psycho.

Question 34

Who was the Original War Machine?

Terrence Howard

Though it kicked off what we think of today as the Marvel cinematic universe, 2008’s Iron Man was far from the studio’s best box office outing in terms of quality. It was by no means a bad movie, but it certainly shows its age, and its sequels would signify a series of growing pains through which the studio had to endure to get to where they are now. There has been much speculation as to why Don Cheadle was conscripted to replace this actor as War Machine in the Iron Man franchise, and, according to the original War Machine himself in an interview with comicbook.com, it was an issue of money primarily. Though a problem endemic to most major Hollywood productions, it would be nice to see a War Machine solo movie at some point in the future.

Question 35

Who is Captain Marvel?

Brie Larson

Captain Marvel is far from the most recognizable hero in the Marvel universe. That said, she will take the torch first ignited by 2017’s Wonder Woman and run with it as her first ever feature film debuts in theaters in 2019. This young actress bears the difficult task of introducing movie-goers to a character with whom they may not be all that familiar, and it won’t be easy. Famous for her 2015 role in The Room, she is a relatively new talent when it comes to major box office productions. She will also have a role in next year’s Avengers: Endgame, and audiences are definitely excited to see exactly what that will be.

Question 36

Recognize this Obscure Villain?

Adam Beach

2016’s S------ Squad pulled quite a few of DC’s background villains out of the woodwork. Casual audiences probably weren’t all that familiar with anyone featured in the film aside from Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn or Will Smith’s Deadshot, but things get really weird when it came to major comic outcasts like Katana, Captain Boomerang, and Slipknot. This actor had the unenviable task of portraying a character with whom very few were familiar, and the mediocre script and his total lack of screen time made that almost impossible. Nobody cares about Slipknot, and his ungracious exit from the film made him all that more forgettable.

Question 37

Recognize this Amazonian Goddess?

Robin Wright

According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins said that she cast this actress as Antiope in the film because she “...needed someone who seems under control and is not overly-aggressive, but who is truly a bad---.”Such can definitely be said about this actresses epic performance, and aside from Gal Gadot’s amazing portrayal of the famous Amazonian herself, she more or less stole the show. Wonder Woman’s supporting cast isn’t all that well known despite the character’s wide appeal, and she did a great job of investing the audience in these relatively obscure side characters.

Question 38

Who is the Man Behind J.A.R.V.I.S.?

Paul Bettany

Most hardcore Marvel fans will no doubt know that Iron Man’s famous digital assistant J.A.R.V.I.S. is an acronym for Just A Rather Very Intelligent System, which seems like a bit of a stretch as far as acronyms go, but it’s Tony Stark we’re talking about. This wasn’t always the case, of course, as Jarvis was once the mortal associate of Stark in the comics. In the Marvel cinematic universe, J.A.R.V.I.S. started out as a computer system named after Howard Stark’s butler Edwin Jarvis. J.A.R.V.I.S. ran much of the Stark Industries business and was responsible for the security of both Stark’s home and Stark tower. He is replaced by a UI named F.R.I.D.A.Y. in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Question 39

Recognize T'Challa?

Chadwick Boseman

Black Panther first debuted in a July 1966 issue of the Fantastic Four line of comics and actually predates any major governing connotations associated with the name. A relatively unrecognized hero by those unfamiliar with Marvel, this changed when he was introduced to the Marvel cinematic universe in 2018 with the release of the eponymously titled Black Panther. Though the actor has a lengthy filmography dating back to the turn of the century, he has become synonymous with the onscreen character of T’Challa. The movie was a tremendous success and seems to have guaranteed the inclusion of the Wakandan hero in plenty of future releases.

Question 40

Still Smiling?

Heath Ledger

The Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy would not have been as popular as it was were it not for its fantastic villains; from Cillian Murphy’s Scarecrow to Tom Hardy’s Bane, Batman’s line of antagonists is second to none. That said, this actor stole the show with his portrayal of The Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight. His unfortunate passing that same year surprised Hollywood and made his performance all the more impactful. Jared Leto and Jack Nicholson may have attempted to impart their unique artistic stylings on the character, but, put quite simply, this actor is the Joker. He is perhaps rivaled only by Mark Hamill’s famous voice acting in the characters various animated incarnations.

Question 41

Know this S.H.I.E.L.D. Overseer?

Jenny Agutter

Councilwoman Hawley is a pretty controversial and somewhat antagonizing character in the Marvel cinematic universe. Though she served as a member of the World Security Council and worked closely with S.H.I.E.L.D. during the invasion of New York during Loki’s offensive in the first Avengers film, her drastic conflict resolution methods have often done more harm than good—primarily when she opted to drop a nuclear warhead on New York City to end the alien invasion. This actress has adopted the role twice in the MCU: once in the aforementioned Avengers film, and once again in Captain America: Winter Soldier.

Question 42

Familiar with Thor's Other Spark?

Jamie Alexander

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and based on the deity of the same name from Norse mythology, Sif is an Asgardian warrior and love interest of Thor Odinson. The actress portraying Sif in the new Marvel continuity made appearances in 2011’s Thor and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, though she was controversially left out of Thor: Ragnarok due to a scheduling conflict. However, this may be to her benefit, as the members of the Warriors Three are eliminated during the film, and her absence means that her character will still be available for future projects if she does indeed return.

Question 43

Seen This Howling Commando Before?

Derek Luke

Though Captain America was able to boost morale back home, the same could not be said regarding the troops in Europe during the events of 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. None in the United States infantry members were particularly happy with his cartoony suit and overly-positive theatrical attitude, least of all elite special unit soldier Gabriel Jones, who was portrayed by this actor in Cap’s first rebooted feature film. A hero of the Second World War, Jones later accompanies Steve Rogers in raids against various Hydra strongholds and proves to be a valuable ally in a time long before the Avengers would first assemble.

Question 44

Know this Squad Member?

Karen Fukuhara

2016’s S------ Squad boasted so many D-list villains that it was almost difficult for some viewers to keep track of them all. Despite the overly-long intro cinematic which introduces all of the film’s anti-heroes and seemingly takes up a third of the movie’s total run time, villains like Slipknot and Katana were left by the wayside. Katana’s role—delivered by this young actress—was particularly underdeveloped, and it was hard to glean any real backstory or character development from here exceedingly brief on screen appearances. Perhaps Katana will get a fair shake should DC ever chose to re-work this beguiling property… but that isn’t very likely.

Question 45

Scared Yet?

Cillian Murphy

As previously mentioned, Heath Ledger’s Joker stole the show when it came to villains in the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight trilogy of the late 2000’s and early 2010’s, with Tom Hardy coming in as a close second. Though he made a brief appearance in The Dark Knight Rises, this actor’s portrayal of Scarecrow in the 2005 superhero epic Batman Begins is often forgotten in favor of some of the property’s more memorable antagonists. Scarecrow is a formidable foe—anyone who played through 2009’s Batman: Arkham Asylum video game will attest to that—and this actor’s performance deserves a bit more credit.

Question 46

Who Played Superman's Father?

Russell Crowe

This actor isn’t particularly well known for his roles in superhero movies; he is perhaps more famous for inquiring if audience were or were not entertained in 2000’s historical epic Gladiator. That said, he has played a small roll in the DC universe as Jar-El—better known as Superman’s father—in 2013’s Man of Steel, though his performance didn’t last beyond the opening scene.. Known for delivering a small monologue explaining his decision to send Kal-El to Earth to escape a collapsing Krypton, Jar-El is definitely an interesting character, though it would be nice to see Russell Crowe take on a more impactful role in the DCEU.

Question 47

Who Trained the Dark Knight?

Lieam Neeson

Bruce Wayne didn’t conjour his combat experience out of thin air; before he kept watch over Gotham as the Dark Knight, Wayne was mentored by a shadowy figure known as Ra’s al Ghul, alternatively referred to as Henri Ducard in Batman Begins. Under his tutelage, Wayne learned to fight and was eventually conscripted in to Ra’s’ nefarious organization known as the League of Shadows which sought to ruin Gotham City. After discovering the group’s motives, Wayne betrayed his former master and dismantled his underground connections within the city. In The Dark Knight Rises it is revealed that Ra’s was the father of Bane’s henchmen Talia al Ghul.

Question 48

Remember this Forgotten Movie?

Edward Norton

Marvel’s cinematic universe, which officially took off in 2008, has trudged through a few rocky patches in order to get where it is today. As a result, there are a few movies which fans totally ignore, the 2008 Incredible Hulk film being chief amongst these poor, forgotten children. What’s more, Marvel saw fit to replace the actor who portrayed Bruce Banner in this picture in 2012’s The Avengers, which must have stung just a bit. Though he hasn’t done much notable acting of late, he is indelibly associated with his role as one half of the Tyler Durden character, the outlandish and confusing lead in 1999’s unforgettable Fight Club.

Question 49

Know the Actress Behind Scarlet Witch?

Elizabeth Olsen

Scarlet Witch has been a primary antagonist of the X-Men since her introduction all the way back in 1964. A founding member of the League of Super Mutants and the brother of Quicksilver, she is typically portrayed as an intimidating superhuman with the uncanny ability to bend reality. She is scarcely seen in any of the recent films based on the X-Men, and her primary role in the new Marvel canon really started when she defected to the avengers after briefly conspiring with Ultron in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Though she is often depicted in costume in the comic books, the movies have opted to leave her in more plain attire, which may be for the best.

Question 50

Recognize this Mysterious Bystander

Stan Lee

The Legend himself, this creator and director has had a hand in the creation of just about every Marvel character, comic, and cinematic adaptation since he got his start as a teenager all the way back in 1939. When it comes to Marvel, there is quite literally no bigger name. That said, he has never wanted to make his movie roles all that conspicuous, and he typically stands in as a mysterious, uncredited background character in most of the films in which he appears. An Easter egg for Marvel fans to obsess over, fans will definitely be keeping an eye out for his final cameo once Avengers: Endgame hits theaters in 2019.
