Supernatural is wrapping up its 13th season, and it's no surprise that this CW series has gone on as long as it has. On the face of things, it's just another silly series about demons and vampires... but there's a heart to Supernatural that any series would love to have. As brothers Dean and Sam Winchester travel the country, killing anything that goes bump in the night, it's the relationship that the two brothers have that really makes the show - not to mention the relationships that they have with the other characters they meet along the way!
From the start, Supernatural has been a show packed with important 'secondary' characters - and it's not their fault that it's hard to survive much longer than a few seasons in a world filled with demons and monsters. From Sam and Dean's allies to their enemies, to other hunters and some specific monsters, can you name all these characters that have popped up on the show over the past thirteen years? Some have been around for so long that they could almost be considered stars of Supernatural themselves, while others only appeared for a few episodes before being killed off (or disappearing for some other reason, of course). In the beginning, this angel was the right hand of God, but was cast out of Heaven for disagreeing with his maker... and used his power and his rage to take over Hell and make it his own. Since then, he's appeared on Supernatural multiple times as a major villain, although he's become more and more charming and relatable as the series has continued...

When the Men of Letters first appeared on the show, Sam and Dean discovered that there was once an organization of demon-hunting men, who used lore rather than just brawn, and who looked down on hunters... and their family was a part of it. Now, they live in an abandoned Men of Letters bunker - and were blown away to discover recently that there is also a British Men of Letters - and that they are still very much alive and well.

There has been more than one ruler of Hell on Supernatural since the series began - as the demons of the Supernatural universe have battled it out to try and hold onto that throne and rule the demons of the Underworld. One of the most recent to sit on the throne is this man, with his Southern drawl and white suits... and his history of being one of the four Princes of Hell. He was thought to be retired, but he's back in action now!

Sam and Dean's mother may have died in the pilot episode of Supernatural, but that doesn't mean that she isn't still vitally important to the show. Her history with the yellow-eyed demon has slowly been revealed through flashbacks and time travel, and recently, she was returned to life by a powerful entity that wanted to do Dean a favor. Now, the matriarch of the Winchesters is hunting again - and proving herself to be more than capable at the family business.
Who was a father-figure to the boys?
Although the boys were raised by their own father, there is another hunter who is also a father figure to them - and who was their mentor and friend for years after their real father died. This grumpy old hunter kept them going, often kept them safe, taught them and helped them with research and lore - and when he was eventually shot and killed, it broke fans hearts... although this being Supernatural, that wasn't the last that we saw of him!

While most of the characters and big storylines in Supernatural revolve around the Bible and the figures within it, that doesn't mean that other gods and mythologies don't factor in, too! This angel first appeared on the show posing as Loki, God of Mischief... and he certainly wreaked plenty of havoc for Sam and Dean! He played many, many, universe-bending tricks on the boys before it was finally revealed that he was a part of heaven's host - and a well-known angel, to boot.

Sam and Dean met this hacker when she was working for Dick Roman - and quickly brought her on board to help them. After that, she was drawn into their world, becoming an accomplished hunter, and even travelling to different realms (like Oz) in order to continue to fight evil. When Sam and Dean were first discovering that they weren't the only hunters in the world, the Roadhouse became a huge part of their lives. They found this bar and safe haven for hunters when they picked up a voicemail on their father's phone - and learned that he hadn't told his sons everything he knew about the family business. This woman, a hunter herself, ran the bar with her daughter, providing a place for hunters to meet, regroup, and pick up new jobs.
What was the name given to the Darkness?
In the tenth and eleventh seasons of Supernatural, Sam and Dean encountered a being more powerful than any they had ever met before - a woman, the sister of God himself, old as God and Death and just as strong. She was known as the Darkness, and was released when the Mark of Cain was removed from Dean, as the Mark served as both lock and key to her. They struggled to learn how to defeat her (although of course, they managed it in the end)... but they did learn her other name.

It shouldn't come as any surprise that witches exist in the Supernatural universe - after all, magic exists, along with all the other tales of things that deal with it. This witch, however, is probably the most powerful witch in the world (and definitely the oldest, although she uses her magic to keep herself looking young). She's even powerful enough to cheat death with magic, and to take on the strongest of the beings that Sam and Dean face - although she's only really concerned with protecting herself.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are just some of the Biblical figures that appear in later season of Supernatural - and these arrived in season five. Each has an incredibly destructive power connected to the rings that they wear, and drives a car (rather than riding a literal horse, these days). The rings themselves also combine to form the key to Lucifer's cage - although they will guard those rings with their lives, as all but one lose their forms without them.

The prophets of the Supernatural universe are humans, but humans who are connected to the Archangels, and who are used by them to speak 'the Lord's word on Earth'. They can sometimes predict the future, and they are some of the only beings able to translate angel and demon 'tablets'. Their lives aren't easy, though, as any connection the angels and demons usually ends in a bloody death - which certainly happened to this poor prophet, while he was trying to help Sam and Dean.

The Reapers have changed quite a bit over the course of the thirteen seasons of Supernatural - and now, they are the beings who gather up the souls of the dead, and help them into the afterlife. Of course, not all souls want to go - and a refusal to come with a Reaper is what creates ghosts. Given how many times Sam and Dean have died, they are now intimately familiar with many Reapers, including this one - who hated them for their constant resurrections.

Of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, this is the one who got the most screentime - and that Sam and Dean ended up dealing with on a much deeper level. This was the leader of the Leviathans in season 7 - a billionaire businessman who was taken over by one of this kind, and led the plan to try and control Earth and turn the humans into a ready source of meat for Leviathans. He was also a particularly smarmy villain, and Sam and Dean wasted no time making fun of his name every chance they got - of course! However, they weren't laughing when he killed Bobby Singer with a shot to the head.
Which hunter teamed up with Bobby?
While some hunters prefer to work solo, it's actually quite common for others to work in pairs - even Bobby Singer, although that came as a surprise to fans who were more used to seeing him as a grumpy old loner! This hunter had attempted to retire, but was drawn back into hunting... and it ended up meaning his death, when he was killed by a monster (who was possessing Bobby at the time). He is remembered fondly by the hunter community.
Who is the vampire that Dean met in Purgatory?
When Dean was trapped in Purgatory (where monsters go when they die), he only got out when he joined forces with an unlikely ally - the spirit of a vampire. This vampire helped him get through the forest of Purgatory, and led him to a place he knew where a human would be able to cross back over to Earth - but it came with a price. Dean had to bring the vamp back with him... which he didn't mind, when the two slowly became friends.
What was the name of Ellen's daughter?
The hunter bar the Roadhouse was run by Ellen Harvelle, along with her daughter. She had fond memories of her father (who was a hunter, and who died on the job when she was young), and wanted to hunt herself in his memory. However, her mother Ellen was not thrilled about this, and just wanted to keep her safe - which caused some conflict when Sam and Dean showed up, and Dean was happy to let her help them out.

The tablets, stone pieces with the word of God as it pertains to angels, demons, and leviathans, are some of the most powerful objects in the universe, and can be read by the prophets... but were written by this angel. Also known as the Scribe of God, this angel was the one chosen to take down God's word... but not because he was particularly powerful. As he tells it, he was only chosen to become the Scribe because he happened to be closest at the time!
Name this Knight of Hell.
Some of the oldest and most powerful of the demons are the Knights of Hell - trained by the demon Cain, and capable of things that most demons would find impossible. This particular Knight of Hell was the one who was single-handedly responsible for the destruction of the original Men of Letters in the past, and it was her plot to take over Hell and Earth and rule as Queen that pushed Dean to take the Mark of Cain into himself.

This hunter is something of a joke in the beginning - because although he is somehow successful enough to actually hunt and kill monsters, he's also far from the sharpest tool in the shed... He meets Sam and Dean through Bobby, who also helps to take care of and mentor him, although he has little patience with his occasional lapses in common sense! Eventually, this hunter was bitten and became a werewolf - but one committed to not hurting humans.

It seemed as though this character was just going to be a one-off in the start, when she met Sam and Dean when they were hunting monsters at a weight-loss spa she attended. However, she then met Jody Mills at a sheriff's convention, and with that, a fantastic friendship was born. Now, she hunts as well as working as a local sheriff, often helping Jody out with cases as well as Sam and Dean - and is loved for her perky attitude, as well as her incredible abilities.

Another one of the crew that spent most of their time at the Roadhouse before it was destroyed, many might be fooled by the mullet-sporting, heavy-drinking attitude of this hunter. However, he is an absolute genius when it comes to computers - not only was he once a student at MIT, but when he was eventually killed, he was able to figure out how to 'hack' into Heaven itself. This hunter is proof that appearances can most definitely be deceiving!
