Only A True DC Fan Can Name All Of These Gotham Characters

Over the past four seasons, Gotham has developed from a little cop-drama corner of the comic book universe to one of the weirdest and most wonderful superhero shows on the air today.

Initially, Gotham appealed to fans of Batman, for obvious reasons. It's the city that one of DC comics' biggest and best known heroes calls home, but this series is definitely not a Batman show. It started out focusing on the young and still optimistic Detective who would later become the Commissioner that we know from the comics, a rookie cop coming into a town where everyone is dirty. Batman does exist, of course, but as the show started with the death of his parents, it quickly became apparent that the little rich boy in Gotham wouldn't be turning into a Caped Crusader anytime soon.

Instead, Gotham is largely about the villains - the seedy underbelly of a city gone mad, and the ways that these mob bosses, mad scientists, and street level criminals are all trying to get theirs. Dozens of familiar faces have appeared from the comics, although they aren't always recognizable, as Gotham loves to play with the source material to create something wonderfully campy, totally zany, and incredibly dark at the same time.

Are you a big enough DC fan to name all these characters from the show? Take our quiz and find out!

Question 1

Name this young playboy.

Although he is far from the star of the show, fans have been enjoying watching the growth of this young man - from the miserable, spoilt little boy who appeared in season one, mourning the murder of his parents, he has come a long way. He learned to navigate Gotham, training with an ex-army man, living on the streets, travelling to train with a martial arts master, uncovering the secrets of his parents murder... and now giving it all up to party as hard as he possibly can.

Question 2

Who is this lead character?

The star of the show (although that's hard to pinpoint in such a massive ensemble series as Gotham), this man started out as an ex-soldier, returning home to Gotham to join the GCPD. Initially, he was determined to never become one of the crooked cops who accepts the way things are in this crime-ridden city, but over time, some of his morals have begun to blur. He's collaborated with criminals, been suspended more than once, and now is struggling to lead the force as Captain.

Question 3

Which key character is this?

As the butler of the young Bruce Wayne, this man is also responsible for his young ward as a kind of father figure... until recently, when a Bruce going off the rails has had himself legally emancipated and kicked his mentor out of the mansion. Before that, however, this man was hugely important not just to protect Bruce, but to help him in his training, and in discovering who his parents' real killers were. Of course, just because Bruce has kicked him out now, that doesn't mean we've seen the last of this man!

Question 4

Name this villain.

While many of the villains of Gotham look like they are relatively normal humans (admittedly, with a serious penchant for gothic and noir style), but this villain is definitely not one of them. Another on again, off again inmate of Arkham Asylum, his real name is Jonathan Crane, but he has abandoned that in favor of the name of the thing he fears the most... and that he has now 'become one with', thanks to a fear toxin that he wanted to unleash.

Question 5

Who is played by Robin Lord Taylor?

One of the biggest characters in the show has to be this one, portrayed brilliantly by Robin Lord Taylor. In the early seasons, this character started out as a simpering lackey for Fish Mooney, made fun of for his looks and his limp. Since then, however, he's risen to the top of the criminal world, has even become Mayor of Gotham City, fallen from grace again, and is back causing trouble as a crime kingpin! What's his villain (not his real) name?

Question 6

Name this redhead.

This character has now been played by multiple actresses, but not because the series itself keeps re-casting. Instead, the character herself continues to evolve and change appearance. Originally, she was a young girl, living in poverty and on the streets - however, when she was transformed by a fall into toxic waters, she came out as a gorgeous woman, more than capable of using her new good looks to seduce her way into anything she wants. Now, she's on her third incarnation...

Question 7

Who is this nice young man?

You would be forgiven for mistaking this guy for an upstanding citizen of Gotham, seeing as he looks very clean cut and friendly... but you would be mistaken. He started out as a forensic scientist for the GCPD, but slowly started to go mad, and develop a split personality. He has since become a killer, and embraced his madness and his brilliant mind - and is currently working with Lee Thompkins in the Narrows, attempting to keep his darkest urges under control.

Question 8

Who is this blonde?

One of many characters whose story has deviated hugely from that of the comics is this dangerous blonde... who started out as the mild-mannered(ish) girlfriend of Jim Gordon. However, after an encounter with a serial killer, she unleashed her own inner darkness, and has since become a crime boss in Gotham City. She's now running the Sirens club, and spending a lot of time being very sultry and evil, and arguing with her partner - and she's a fan-favorite character for it.

Question 9

Who is this bearded man?

Fans weren't surprised to see this major comic book character pop up in the series, as he is one of Batman's biggest foes in the comics. However, it came as a shock when his long arc ended with him manipulating the young Bruce Wayne into killing him, because he was sick of his immortal life, and wanted to finally be at peace. It seems that Gotham isn't afraid to kill off the big guns, but that's one of the great things about the show.

Question 10

Who is this creepy man?

One of the fans' absolute favorite villains has to be this man, who has gone from being a member of a travelling circus (and the murderer of his own mother), where he learned the showmanship that he would become well known for. Since then, he has been in and out of Arkham, the leader of the murderous Maniax, dead and resurrected, lost his face and had to sew it back on, and is currently plotting his next move on Gotham.

Question 11

Name this bald dude.

This contract killer is known for being utterly ruthless, and also completely uncaring. He wouldn't hurt a fly unless he was being paid to do so, but if he is being paid, then he will hunt his target down with single-minded focus, and he never misses the mark. He's also increasingly one of the sassiest characters on the show, and absolutely hilarious to watch, as he works for the biggest crime bosses in the city, making sure their will is done.

Question 12

Who does Milo Ventimiglia play?

Milo Ventimiglia's handsome character was killed off in the first season, but he had a lasting impact on Barbara Kean. This charmer was picking up women in bars, bringing them home... and then chaining them up and torturing them when they wanted to leave. When he brought Barbara in, though, he discovered another dark soul, and took her to her home where she murdered her parents in front of him. However, he was killed by the police, who believe that he was the one to kill the Keans...

Question 13

What was this character's real name?

This character had a complex story arc in Gotham's second and third seasons, including a resurrection! Initially introduced as the Mayor of Gotham, this suave charmer seemed all fine on the surface, but underneath, all he wanted was to destroy Bruce Wayne, for something that his family did to this man's ancestors - the Dumas, who used to run Gotham City. Later, when his plans failed, he was resurrected and returned as Azreal, believing himself to be sent by God to complete his mission.

Question 14

Who was this love interest for Bruce?

Despite still being a teenager, and not yet reaching full playboy billionaire status (although he's getting close!), Bruce has had a few love interests over the course of the season - including this pretty young woman. Introduced to Bruce at school, she initially seemed like just another other normal teen - but it was revealed that she was working for the Galavans, and was a key part of their plan to destroy Bruce... but ended up falling for him, and regretting her role in it.

Question 15

Name this young woman.

Another of Bruce's love interests is this young woman, a street orphan who is more than capable of taking care of herself - and Bruce, when he lacked the street smarts that she has in such abundance. She helped him in his training, when he wanted to learn how to navigate the darker parts of Gotham's streets, but they often fall out over the differences in their lives, and her willingness to get involved in the criminal side of Gotham City.

Question 16

Who was this recent villain?

This villain appeared in the most recent season to cause havoc in Gotham City, as he wanted to clear the corruption in both the police force and the upper classes of Gotham. The issue with this, of course, is that he wanted to do it through bloody murder - he slaughtered cops, and then left them with pigs' heads over their own, he tricked some of Gotham's elite to a dinner where he fed them pie made of human meat... and he even had a musical number!

Question 17

What was the name this gang gave themselves?

These mad criminals were originally inmates of Arkham Asylum together, before Theo Galavan broke them out to do his dirty work. With one clear leader, these guys wore their Arkham Asylum uniforms while they went on rampages, killing multiple people, often filming it to allow the whole City of Gotham to see what they were doing, and even tossing people off a building to spell their name out in bodies on the street... what was the name that they spelled?

Question 18

Who was this, before she died?

This demure employee of the Gotham City Police Department is not one of the residents of Gotham who has survived to the fourth season, but she was a big part of the early ones. Working in the Police Department, she was dating one of the cops, but Ed Nygma had a major crush on her... and hated how her boyfriend treated her. So of course, as he started to go insane, he ended up killing the boyfriend, wooing her... and then accidentally killing her, too.

Question 19

What's the Mad Hatter's real name?

Although Mad Hatter sounds like this guy would be better suited to an appearance in Alice In Wonderland, rather than Gotham, the actions of this insane villain are certainly more suited to this dark city. The Mad Hatter came to Gotham looking for his sister, Alice, a young woman with a poison in her blood that will drive anyone mad if they become infected... and after her death, he decided to weaponize it, creating a virus to unleash violent madness on the city.

Question 20

Who is this grizzled guy?

This man has been a lot of things over the four seasons of Gotham. Originally, he was the older partner to a rookie cop, trying to explain the way things work in Gotham City. Later, he was demoted, quit, and then came back to rise all the way to Captain of the Gotham City Police Department. However, since then he has been demoted and quit a second time, and is now working as a bartender, and refusing to return to the Force.

Question 21

Who was this woman?

This character was created specifically for Gotham, and doesn't appear in the comics - but she was one of the biggest characters in the first season of the show. Like most of the Gotham criminals, she's been through a lot; starting out as a crime boss and club owner in the city, plotting against the mob, to being captured by the Dollmaker and losing an eye, to returning and being killed, to being resurrected and working with Penguin, to being killed again. It's been a long journey for this criminal queen!

Question 22

Name this doctor.

Another character who has changed hugely from the comics, this Doctor would be more recognizable to comic book fans if she were a little old lady... who would still be tough as nails. In Gotham, this Doctor started out as the medical examiner for the Gotham City Police Department, and fell in love with Jim Gordon while they worked together. However, things took a turn when she fell in love with someone else, who was killed, and is now working in the underworld as the criminal ruler of the Narrows.

Question 23

Who is standing next to Penguin?

Penguin doesn't have many loved ones or loyalties - and the times that he has trusted people in the past, he has often been betrayed - even by Ed, whom he absolutely loved. However, this woman is one of the few who was always happy to have Penguin's back, who loved him unconditionally and would always be there for him. However, knowing this, Penguins' enemies kidnapped her, and eventually killed her - leading him to take brutal and bloody revenge.

Question 24

Who is this twisted scientist?

There are plenty of twisted men in the City of Gotham (and women, of course), but this balding, glasses wearing scientist (shown here with his assistant) has to be one of the creepiest. Working as Director of Arkham Asylum, he used the inmates as subjects for a range of twisted experiments, including learning how to resurrect the dead, and the creation of 'monsters' who are now unleashed upon the city. He was also the man behind the hit on Martha and Thomas Wayne.

Question 25

Who is this masked pyro?

This young woman was originally terrified of fire, but all that has changed since she was first introduced on the show. Initially, Bridgit was a shy girl, living with her overbearing criminal brothers, and being forced to deal with dangerous and flammable substances - which eventually burnt her. Finally getting sick of her vicious brothers, she then murdered them, went on a crime spree with a flamethrower, and was killed... before finding her way to Indian Hill and being resurrected under this supervillain name.

Question 26

Who is this one-handed man?

Originally the right-hand man of one of the mob bosses of Gotham City, before losing his own hand... and eventually growing it back again! After being brainwashed and forced to work for Penguin, he was able to find love with Tabitha, and joined forces with her and Barbara Kean. However, jealousy and treachery led to Barbara shooting him in the head - which then led to his body being dumped in a swamp, and his resurrection as Solomon Grundy! What's his original name?

Question 27

Who is this mobster's daughter?

There are plenty of mobsters and crime bosses in Gotham City, but most of them are the typical picture of fat middle aged men... unlike this gorgeous woman, who came to the show recently when her father (who used to be head of one of the crime families of Gotham) decided not to return, and she wanted to come and take over the business in his stead. She took on Penguin, slept with Gordon, and generally caused her own brand of organized chaos.

Question 28

Name this reporter.

Not a native of Gotham, this woman arrived in the city in order to cover the case of Indian Hill and the 'monster' experiments done on human subjects there. While in Gotham, she wasn't just doing her job, though... she also struck up a relationship with Jim Gordon while the two of them were doing some investigating together. However, their relationship ended when she was shot by Jervis Tetch when he was forcing Jim to choose between her and his long-time love interest, Lee.

Question 29

Name the gangster.

Since the first season, Gotham has become far more about the crazy comic book villains, superpowers, dark plots and schemes, and all kinds of other madness... but originally, the show was very focused around the more traditional criminals and crime families of the city - including this man. One of the classic crime bosses of the comics, there was nothing too unexpected about his storyline (for once!). Instead, he ran his criminal empire, got involved in a war with other crime families, and was killed as a result.

Question 30

Name this murdered character.

Although this man was related to one of the biggest crime families in Gotham, he didn't go into the family business. Instead, he moved away and became a doctor, later meeting Lee Thompkins and falling in love. The two returned to Gotham to be married, but this was clearly a terrible idea because while there, he got infected by the Tetch virus as soon as he was married, and was killed by Jim (to protect Lee) as a result of it.

Question 31

Who used to run the fight club in the Narrows?

The Narrows is a rich and fascinating place - albeit an extraordinarily dangerous one! This woman ran a fight club in the worst part of Gotham, appealing to criminals who wanted to watch people beat each other half to death and bet on it... but what she didn't bet on was that Barbara and Tabitha would come to the club and end up killing her! The club itself has now passed to Lee, who was doctoring the fighters there at the time of her death.

Question 32

Who is standing next to Barbara?

Barbara may be an incredibly strong (and criminally insane) woman, but she also prefers to work with other people. As well as teaming up with Ra's Al Ghul briefly, she is usually partnered with this woman, and Selena Kyle has also recently joined their group of Sirens. She and this woman first joined forces before Barbara became quite as ambitious as she is now, and the two have certainly had their differences - even trying to kill each other! But now they are back together and working to stay on top in Gotham's underworld.

Question 33

What's the name of Strange's assistant?

Doctor Hugo Strange may have been the driving force behind the crazy experiments at Indian Hill that unleashed monsters on the city... but he wasn't alone in the work that he did. His assistant was fully complicit in his plans, but managed to escape the kind of punishment that Strange received in return for testifying against him in court. However, that wasn't enough to save her, as she was later kidnapped (and killed) when Fish Mooney was trying to cure herself after what they did to her.

Question 34

Who is this pink-haired criminal?

While many of the characters in Gotham have long and complicated story arcs, others appear as more of a freak of the week, showing up for an episode or two before disappearing again. This man is one of those - a psychotic cannibal killer who hires himself out as a Gotham hitman - partially to give himself a constant source of something to eat! With a flamboyant pink streak in his hair, this man loved his job... but wasn't good enough at it to avoid being sent to prison.

Question 35

Who is this tech-genius?

Another familiar face for fans of the Batman comics is this man, who isn't involved in the criminal underworld of Gotham, but who works for Wayne enterprises and is a friend to Bruce Wayne (or was, before Wayne went playboy!). However, after learning how corrupt Wayne Enterprises was, he ended up quitting his job there and moving over to use his skills at the Gotham City Police Department, helping to track down escapees. He's still a minor character at the moment, but we are sure to see more of this man in future!
