The television show Gossip Girl made a big splash in the media when it came out. It aired on September 19, 2007 on The CW, and there was almost nothing like it. It had all the drama of a soap opera, but had all the ritz and success of a higher-brow show. Plus, it was aimed at a teen audience. The teens seemed to be worldlier than the teens of shows like The O.C. or One Tree Hill. At one point, New York magazine even called it the “Greatest Teen Drama of All Time.”
The show is narrated by the omniscient blogger known as Gossip Girl, who is voiced by actress Kristen Bell. Throughout the entire series, viewers are left to wonder who Gossip Girl is. The show follows upper class “it” girl Serena van der Woodsen –played by Blake Lively—through her life and experiences with her friends (and frenemies) as she takes over Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The plot also follows Penn Badgley’s character Dan Humphrey, who—because of his socio-economic status—is an outsider looking in at the glamorous lives of his Upper East Side counterparts.
