Since the late 1950s, video games have been steadily growing as an important part of cultures all over the world. The world's first video game was invented by a group of physicists headed by William Higinbotham. The game, Tennis for Two, was presented to the public as an exhibit at one of Brookhaven National Laboratory's annual visitors' days. It had a simplistic premise: a game of tennis, but it was a smash hit among the museum's patrons, who were generally bored with the exhibits offered on visitors' days.
"It might liven up the place to have a game that people could play, and which would convey the message that our scientific endeavors have relevance for society," Higinbotham later stated as an explanation for what inspired his group to create the game.
He had no idea just how much of an impact his group's invention would have on society! Over fifty years later, modern gaming has taken on a completely new face. Today's virtual tennis games are controlled by actual IRL movements and represented on screen by elaborate 3D technology, including interactive characters and intricately detailed environments.
