Only A Master Trainer Can Name 100% Of These Second Generation Pokemon!

After having completed a solid run through Kanto (maybe even after four or five save files), there's a new adventure that awaits every trainer - the region of Johto, where the second generation of Pokemon lie waiting for worthy trainers to challenge them. Sure, the OG 'mons from gen 1 all have a special place in our hearts, but any budding Pokemon master who takes their craft seriously will expand their Pokedex to include species from Johto and beyond.

Forget the beyond for now - today, we'll focus on the Pokemon found in the Gold and Silver games. As with all generations of Pokemon, these creatures come in a variety of shapes, sizes and abilities. Any trainer who walks through the tall grass of Johto for even a few seconds is bound to run into one. What happens after that depends on the Pokemon in question, and the nature of the trainer.

Though, there's no need to concern ourselves with that right now. This is a Pokedex quiz of sorts - trainers wishing to pass (let alone score 100%) will need to know the exact names of various Pokemon from the Johto region.

Sound easy enough? It should be - for all serious trainers, anyway. Let's get started.

Question 1

Who's that Pokemon?

Don't let the headband be a distraction! This Grass type Pokemon is known for its sleight of hand - or vine. As it readies its devastating Vine Whip attack mid flight, it'll soon be time to guess its name. Second generation Pokemon don't usually get the same shine as those from Kanto, but all true Pokemon trainers should be familiar with the entire gen 2 Pokedex. This is a starter Pokemon anyway, so it shouldn't even be an issue. If it is, someone's in trouble.

Question 2

Who's that Pokemon?

Fire tends to follow Grass in the world of starter Pokemon, so here's our second gen Fire type starter. He's making a grand entrance with a huge Smokescreen attack. Be careful - there might be others of his kind hiding behind the smoke, looking to ambush us. Thankfully, the Pokemon in the next question is keeping an eye out for us. Before we get there, though, let's see what this little firecracker's name is. Another easy one, no doubt about it.

Question 3

Who's that Pokemon?

The Water type starter from Johto is our third Pokemon, and as always, he's ready to have a good time. Of course, that doesn't mean he isn't ready for a good battle, either. Too bad this is only a naming competition - this little croc will have to get his daily exercise elsewhere. Many trainers have picked this starter yourself back in their early Johto days, though many have also faced it on their rival's team. Either way, who's this guy?

Question 4

Who's that Pokemon?

Trainers who wander some ways into the tall grass after leaving Professor Elm's lab will likely run into this... mammal, over here. He might not seem like the most impressive catch at first, but keep in mind that there's a powerful evolved form in store for trainers patient enough to raise this guy. Trainers who have already done so will surely not allow themselves to forget his little name. His feelings will be hurt if they did, so be careful.

Question 5

Who's that Pokemon?

Everyone remembers this strange little owl from their Johto days. Those who take their time can find it overnight in Ilex forest. Since it's such a mysterious, highly coveted Pokemon, many trainers have done just that, eventually being rewarded with this owl's mighty evolved form. More on that in a bit, though. For now, look this bird deeply in its strange eyes, and see if you can pull out a name. Those who can't might need to pull out their Pokedex.

Question 6

Who's that Pokemon?

Here is the majestic evolved form of that little owl - the mighty Something Or Other. We won't spell his name out for anyone, since that would defeat our divine purpose here. Of course, we don't assume you're looking to be spoon fed, anyway - real trainers relish a good challenge. There's no need for real trainers to wrack their minds for too long to guess this guy's name, since he's one of gen 2's most famous 'mons. Let's see what his name is.

Question 7

Who's that Pokemon?

It seems as though we've run into a swarm of Bug type Pokemon, and they don't look happy at all. In fact, it seems as though they're ready for all out war! We must quell their momentum before it picks up. As we attempt to find Onix's Pokeball on our Gear Belt, try guessing what these savage insects are called. They appear quite early in the game, and can definitely be a challenge to take down for trainers who aren't prepared.

Question 8

Who's that Pokemon?

Just look at our luck - another swarm of bugs! Even worse - this time, it appears to be giant spiders, well organized and ready for a bout. Thankfully we have Onix on our side, so we'll crush them with boulders in no time at all. Steer clear of any stray Poison Jab's, since the closest Pokemon Center is a long ways away. These spiders are easily recognizable by real trainers - if you're one of those, there should be no problem here.

Question 9

Who's that Pokemon?

It's nice not to have to face an army of crazy bugs right now, but this manic bat isn't making things much better for us. In fact, those creepy crawlies are looking pretty friendly right about now. This Pokemon is strong and super fast. Running away will be futile, so it's important to click the right name in order to proceed. Be careful not to be fooled - this jerk's name might not be so obvious. Choose a button wisely.

Question 10

Who's that Pokemon?

From the bubbling depths of the water emerges a lovely Water and Electric type Pokemon, full of joy and happiness. Despite that, this particular specimen is known to be a true beast in battle, absorbing hits like they're nothing at all while Volt Switching around the opponent's team. Anyone who has used this 'mon in that capacity will definitely remember its name. If not, maybe the process of elimination will be a friend here. Let's see which button is best.

Question 11

Who's that Pokemon?

Now who might this Pokemon be? It seems sad - too sad for a great day like today. We're not sure what's the cause of this little 'mon's broken spirit, but maybe we can help make its day by correctly guessing its name. If nothing else, clicking the wrong name here will surely make its bad day only worse. Come on, this is the first link of a super popular evolutionary chain. Those who know anything about gen 2 should definitely know this 'mon.

Question 12

Who's that Pokemon?

Since we're already on the gen 1 pre-evolutions, let's continue the thread with this little Fairy. Though of course, she's a pure Normal type in Pokemon Gold and Silver, since the Fairy typing would only be revealed in future generations. Even at that, despite its status as a pre-evo, trainers may very well get swept by this little thing if they allow her to set up. Keep in mind the dreaded evolutionary chain she's a part of. What's her name, anyway?

Question 13

Who's that Pokemon?

It seems as though we've stumbled on not just one, but two Kanto pre-evolved forms. They seem a little confused, though this isn't much of a surprise - these 'mons are still very young, after all. It'll take a while and plenty of training to raise these little tykes to their ultimate forms, but we have neither the time nor the inclination today. Instead, just as we were doing, let's continue naming Johto 'mons. Who are these two, right here?

Question 14

Who's that Pokemon?

Trainers who don't know who this little egg is must not know much about Pokemon at all. Despite its size and generally adorable demeanor, this Normal type tyke is capable of generating a tremendous amount of power. Using Metronome, it has access to every move in the Movedex, albeit randomly generated. Still, that gives it a chance to take down any 'mon it faces against. Not many trainers tend to use this one in battle, but real trainers must surely remember is name.

Question 15

Who's that Pokemon?

Those with the drive to train the aforementioned egg will eventually wind up with this monster right here. An immovable tank - especially when equipped with the Eviolite item - it'll take a super strong, super effective attack to remove it from the field once it's in play. With a move kit based on survival and support, it might be an opponent's key to victory for trainers who are not prepared. Hopefully you've prepared well enough to get this question right. Who's this 'mon?

Question 16

Who's that Pokemon?

Who knows what this Psychic and Flying type Pokemon is pecking away at? Trainers who are really curious don't even need to ask it aloud - just form the question as a clear thought in the mind, and this 'mon will answer. Or not, since it appears to be wild. This would be a great time to add a new Pokemon to the team, if it were the focus of this quiz. It's not, of course - who's this Pokemon?

Question 17

Who's that Pokemon?

Uh oh! We've wandered into this feral Electric type Pokemon's territory, and it's safe to assume that some of its newborns are around here somewhere. Either way, looks like it has a Thunder Punch ready for our faces, and our cheeks might not respond well to it. As we send out a Golem to battle, you'll have to name this gen 2 'mon - and quick! If we lose Golem, we have no more Electric immunities left. Who are we looking at?

Question 18

Who's that Pokemon?

This Pokemon might not seem like the most ferocious specimen out there, but it's actually a highly ranked 'mon in terms of its sheer force. With its ability Pure Power doubling its Attack stat, and access to the stat maximizing Belly Drum, this cute monster can eradicate all your 'mons before you get a chance to catch your breath. Thankfully though, there's no need to do battle today - not for now, at least. All you have to do is name 'mons.

Question 19

Who's that Pokemon?

Wait a minute, does this guy even learn Vine Whip? Isn't it a pure Rock type? Anyway, since we're looking at one of the most popular Pokemon to be introduced in Gold and Silver, we're pretty confident in your ability to at least guess its name right. Ignore the vines headed straight for us - our Rapidash will take care of those. Though it won't be able to take a Stone Edge attack, so let's make haste. Who's this 'mon?

Question 20

Who's that Pokemon?

Just when we thought we were done with the aggressive Pokemon for a while, this feral toad has descended from the sky above with a formidable Mega Kick attack. Being an evolved form of one of Kanto's classics (an optional evolved form, however) all true trainers should find no trouble in guessing this one' name. If this question seems puzzling, you might need to look through your Johto 'dex before returning. Though hopefully there will be no need for that today.

Question 21

Who's that Pokemon?

If you direct your attention toward the fierce skies overhead, you might notice a certain Grass and Flying type Pokemon speedy enough to outrun almost every 'mon in its generation. On top of that, it has access to Leech Seed and a host of powder-based status moves that can put your 'mons out of commission with no effort at all. Facing this Pokemon in battle is a daunting task, but today, only names are needed, and not moves. What's this Pokemon's name?

Question 22

Who's that Pokemon?

It looks like a pesky little monkey has found his way to the most elevated platform in this quiz, and is sort of just hanging out here for a while until we manage to figure out his name. Since he's one of Johto's more recognizable faces, there's probably no need to strain your memory too hard to guess his name right. There's a clue hidden somewhere here, or there might not be - either way, we won't say another word.

Question 23

Who's that Pokemon?

This Pokemon brings sunshine with it wherever it goes, which is a great gift on a rainy day. In fact, if you're looking to build a sun-based team, this Pokemon definitely might be worth considering in a set up spot. Granted, it's not the most powerful Grass type out there, but like many other Pokemon in its lower tier, this little flower is not to be underestimated. If you're any sort of real trainer at all, then you'll know its name.

Question 24

Who's that Pokemon?

As always, it seems as though this little Water type Pokemon is lost, and we'll have to walk it back home to its mother. While we do that, why don't you dig through the mental vaults of your Johto experiences to pull out this character's name. Since it's such a famous specimen, it doesn't take a Pokemaniac to get this question right. Those who are real trainers won't even need to scan it in their Pokedex. Let's see what its name is.

Question 25

Who's that Pokemon?

Right on time, the first of our Johto Eeveelutions is here and ready to party. By "party", we mean bending spoons or something, since that's what Psychic types tend to do. All true Pokemon trainers are well familiar with all Eeveelutions, but these creatures are popular enough for even rank amateurs to recognize. It knows your name, for sure, but you might not know who this Pokemon really is. Hopefully that's not the case, since it'll only get tougher from here.

Question 26

Who's that Pokemon?

After the Psychic type Eeveelution came Teleporting around, you probably already knew that the Dark type variation would soon follow. While this Pokemon looks like a shadowy beast, don't be so quick to run away - he's actually quite nice if you give him a chance. However, we have no time to make Pokefriends here - today, we have some quiz work to do. Think back on the Johto experience, and try figuring out this 'mon's name. It's totally possible.

Question 27

Who's that Pokemon?

As trainers make their way along Pokemon Gold and Silver, for all they know, this Dark and Flying type Pokemon stalks them the entire way - a twisted type of guardian angel, in a certain sense. That's not canon by any means, but let's just go with it. Whether you were followed by this 'mon in gen 2, or caught one of them yourself, this bird 'mon's name should stick out in memory. It's actually pretty easy to figure out.

Question 28

Who's that Pokemon?

We've come a long way since the beginning of this quiz - that first Grass starter has now achieved its full form, and what a mighty beast it turned out to be. Since there aren't many other dinosaur-inspired Grass type starters in Johto, there's only one right answer here. Did you pick this guy's pre-evolved form when you first started your gen 2 journey? Either way, a true Pokemon pro would make a point of knowing its name, along with the following 2 fully evolved starters.

Question 29

Who's that Pokemon?

This next fully evolved starter appears to us in an eruption of fire - one of its signature moves, for sure. Since Fire tends to be the most popular starter Pokemon option, chances are that most trainers picked out this guy's pre-evolved form way back when in Professor Elm's lab. Though, there's a definitely a chance that you went with another option here. If this Pokemon's name seems a little fuzzy in memory, you probably haven't played the gen 2 games in a while.

Question 30

Who's that Pokemon?

As cool as Fire type starters tend to be, this 'mon is arguably the coolest specimen to emerge from Johto's three starter Pokemon options. Just look at it, in all its reptilian glory. As strong as this Pokemon looks, its stats exceed expectations - all this guy needs is one Swords Dance or Dragon Dance boost to end opposing teams effectively, in one fell swoop. Since this titan is super popular, you should definitely remember the name it goes by.

Question 31

Who's that Pokemon?

Just look at the remarkable crown on this next second generation Pokemon. If he looks a little familiar, that's probably because this Water and Psychic type Pokemon is part of a famous evolutionary chain from Kanto. With its powerful Special Attack stat and considerable bulk, this guy can take a real whopping and dish out some punishment in turn. He's another gen 2 mascot, so no self respecting trainer can get by without knowing who he is. What's this 'mon's name?

Question 32

Who's that Pokemon?

There's a feral Ghost type Pokemon flying through the air, and trust us - no one wants to be between this 'mon and wherever she's going. With her key ability in Levitate, not even a powerful Earthquake attack can faze her. As with all Ghost types, trainers need to come prepared with a serious strategy if they're looking to get by her. Of course, trainers who are really up to the challenge can try catching this majestic 'mon and adding her as a new team member.

Question 33

Who's that Pokemon?

Looks like we've stumbled into the Mystery Dungeon, and a swarm of unidentifiable Pokemon have appeared without any warning. Luckily this species isn't exactly known for its violent tendencies, but you can never be too careful here in the Mystery Dungeon. Hopefully we can get by them without causing much of a stir. Since these are Psychic types, you want to keep a solid Dark type 'mon in tow, just in case. At any rate, what are these 'mons names?

Question 34

Who's that Pokemon?

This wouldn't be a very good gen 2 quiz without us including this classic, unstoppable 'mon. Judging by this Pokemon's offensive stats and move pool alone, it doesn't seem to be much of a threat in battle. However, notice its access to the moves Counter and Mirror Coat, along with its great defensive stats, and it's easy to see why any Pokemon would be hesitant to strike this guy. Thankfully, there's no need to dish out attacks here - only names.

Question 35

Who's that Pokemon?

Oh no - a wild beast is loose in the quiz, and he's going on a total rampage! Unless we can settle this Normal and Psychic type 'mon down soon, this entire quiz will be in ribboned ruins before you can say Shadow Ball. While we try to figure out how to slow this guy down, you can go ahead and look for it through your Pokedex. This isn't the most famous Pokemon from gen 2, but it isn't the most obscure, either.

Question 36

Who's that Pokemon?

When wandering through the open fields of Johto, it's important to keep one's eyes down for any stray foot obstacles. Some of these obstacles might have a face, and if that's the case, it probably belongs to this particular species of Bug type Pokemon. This guy might seem a little paltry right now, but keep in mind the steely behemoth he'll eventually evolve into. Before it self destructs, we'd do best to click its name, and quite promptly. What's this guy called?

Question 37

Who's that Pokemon?

We'll say one thing - this Pokemon is definitely not the smartest one on this list. Far from it, actually - he's a bit of a dunce. Despite that, though, what this Pokemon lacks in brainpower, it makes up for in pure heart. If ever you've used one of its species in battle, you'll know exactly what we're talking about. Its ability Serene Grace gives it an insane amount of luck, giving it a chance to take down even the most daunting foe.

Question 38

Who's that Pokemon?

No, that's not a solar eclipse - this Pokemon is just so tall that it blocked all light from entering this quiz. Even its pre-evolved form is a tall one, and its been a classic ever since the first generation of the games. In its new and improved state, it has access to the Steel typing along with a huge boost in its stats. All in all, this is a formidable 'mon to use in nearly all tiers of serious play.

Question 39

Who's that Pokemon?

Depending on the trainer in question, seeing this Pokemon might be an unfortunate omen, or a lucky one. Either way, he's shown up today, that much is for sure, and he looks to be ready for an epic battle. Those looking to avoid such a thing should make sure to click the correct name as quickly as possible, otherwise this Dark and Fire type Pokemon might stick to our trail until the end of this quiz. Come on, who's this Pokemon?

Question 40

Who's that Pokemon?

What sort of magical forest have we wandered into? Wherever we are, it looks like the bugs here also share a Steel typing, at least this one does. Come to think of it, this looks to be a super famous Johto Pokemon and one of the strongest 'mons to have ever been discovered. Its pre-evolved form was already formidable, so you can just imagine how powerful this guy is. Trainers who know anything about gen 2 know who this is for sure.

Question 41

Who's that Pokemon?

Any trainer who's made it this far into a Johto quiz should definitely not be stumped by this question here. After all, we're looking at one of the most iconic Pokemon of all time, from any generation. Although it was released in gen 2, this Pokemon was introduced to us in the anime as one of the first Johto Pokemon, as early as the end of the Kanto days. This question shouldn't take more than a second or two, really.

Question 42

Who's that Pokemon?

Just when we thought we were clear of danger, a ferocious Steel and Flying type Pokemon seems to be obstructing our path. We're not sure what it demands as an offering - or if it's even interested in an offering in the first place. It's possible that this bird just wants to fight. If it's a fight it wants, it's a fight it'll get - from us, of course. While we hold it off, try clicking on the proper name.

Question 43

Who's that Pokemon?

After that last 'mon, it was clear that this one would be turning up not too far behind. After all, for a long time, these two formed one of the most unbreakable defensive duos in all of Pokemon history. Try as trainers might to get through their combined wall, it would take the luck of the gods to do so. If you don't recognize this Pokemon from your battles, then surely it must seem familiar as the national mascot of the Pokemon Center.

Question 44

Who's that Pokemon?

Our first of Johto's Legendary beasts, this one appears in our quiz in a flash of lightning. You might have good (or pain-stricken, potentially) memories about chasing this elusive Legendary all throughout Johto as it attempts to flee. Of course, for those looking to use a Master Ball, catching this Electric type would be easy - however, if you're up to the challenge, you can save the Master Ball and chase this 'mon the good old fashioned way. At any rate, who's this Pokemon?

Question 45

Who's that Pokemon?

It's time to direct our gaze upward for a moment to notice Johto's Fire type Legendary beast, howling away with the wind as he prepares to make his way toward us. Like the former entry, this 'mon is not easy to catch - he'll run away from battle during the first turn, so you'll need to trap it to keep it in place. Whether you've succeeded in catching this gen 2 'mon or not, all true trainers should know it by name.

Question 46

Who's that Pokemon?

The final and perhaps most well known of Johto's Legendary beast is here, and as always, it isn't playing any games. It's a stoic creature, famous for being an unbreakable wall in battle. Any trainers who have faced this 'mon in battle know exactly how sturdy it can be - once you've seen it used once, it makes you want to obtain one for your own team as soon as possible. Again, all true trainers should know this Pokemon by name.

Question 47

Who's that Pokemon?

While this Pokemon isn't technically a Legendary, all it takes is one good look at his stats to notice that he can compete with almost any other Legendary in the Pokedex. Its influence in the metagame has been huge ever since it was released, even more so when it was given the Sand Stream ability in gen 3. Since he's such a well known tyrant, no self respecting trainer would allow themselves to get by without knowing who he is.

Question 48

Who's that Pokemon?

From the merciless, storm-laden sky comes an unforgiving Psychic and Flying type Legendary, and it doesn't seem to be in a great mood. In fact, unless we're sorely mistaken, this 'mon seems to be getting its signature move Aeroblast ready, and that means we need to clear the area as fast as possible. Otherwise, we'll all be joining the wind in no time at all. Before we leave, let's see you figure out what this classic Johto 'mon's name is.

Question 49

Who's that Pokemon?

The Pokemon world often operates based on duality, and this Flying type Legendary is the flip side to the last. It has the secondary typing of Fire and access to the formidable Sacred Fire move, which gives it a 50% chance to burn its foes upon impact. If you've faced this 'mon in the Ubers tier, you'll know exactly how annoying it is to take down, especially given its Regenerator ability. No other Legendaries are quite like this one, to say the least.

Question 50

Who's that Pokemon?

We've finally made it to the last entry of our mini Johto Pokedex - the most exclusive Pokemon belonging to the second generation. A Psychic and Grass type with super well rounded stats, this Pokemon has been used in countless applications ever since it was released. To obtain it, you'll need to make a magical deal with Nintendo - otherwise, stick to the out of game, competitive spheres if you're looking to see what this 'mon can do. Who is this, anyway?
