While romantic comedies may have peaked back in the 1990s, they seem to be making a comeback. I mean come on, the romantic comedy is a staple genre in the film industry and for good reason. People love to watch a story about two unlikely strangers meeting and then falling in love.
Despite being wronged by people in our own lives, it still gives us all hope after watching a film about two people who can love one another despite all the obstacles they may face in pursuit of that love. However, there does seem to be a specific formula when it comes to making the perfect romantic comedy. Just go with me on this one. It seems that to have a hit romantic comedy, you need either Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant, or simply both Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.
From falling in love online with a person you dislike in real life, to reflecting on where things went wrong in a previous relationship, to falling in love with someone who is already married, there are romantic comedies for every and all situations. Good luck trying to guess all of these romantic comedies. It is not going to be easy.

When it comes to romantic comedies, this movie really does have it all. It has love and heartbreak and it has Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightley, Emma Thompson, and Andrew Lincoln, just to name a few… This film follows the intertwined stories of a group of characters during Christmas time. These intertwined stories all come together to deal with the one thing that brings us all together, which is love. And let’s not forget the amazing cameo by the great Rowan Atkinson who plays the sales associate in the jewelry department. “But you asked for it to be gift wrapped…”

This next film stars Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney, who have both made a pact that they will marry each other if they are still single by the time they’re 28. I don’t think that this movie aged too well in terms of thinking your life is over if you don’t get married by 28. Nevertheless, when Mulroney’s character calls up Roberts, days before her 28th birthday, he tells her that he is getting married. The only problem is that now Roberts starts to realize that she is in love with him and decides that she has to stop the wedding.

Will Smith stars in this next romantic comedy as dating expert Alex Hitchens. When the clumsy and love-struck Albert Brennaman, played by the always funny Kevin James, hires Alex Hitchens to help him learn how to woo the seemingly unattainable Allegra Cole, played by Amber Valletta, Albert is actually able to make quite the progress. However, as Albert is succeeding in his attempt, Hitchens is having a hard time trying to win over Sara Melas, a gossip reporter, played be Eva Mendes. When Melas discovers that Brennaman hired Hitchens to help him, it not only threatens his relationship with Allegra, but it also threatens Melas’ relationship with Hitchens.

This next film was directed by Rob Reiner and is an absolute classic. The film stars Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal as recent college grads who take a road trip to New York from Chicago, and along the way, they contemplate as to whether or not men and women can be actual platonic friends. The film then picks up ten years later when these two characters meet again in a bookstore. The main obstacle these two now face is whether or not they can try to stay friends without any sparks coming between them. Think you know which romantic comedy this film is?

This next rom com stars Jennifer Lopez as Mary Fiore, San Francisco’s hardest working, most organized, wedding consultant. After securing the biggest account ever, the wedding of an internet mogul, played by Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, she can’t help but celebrate. While celebrating, Lopez is almost in a pretty bad accident with a runaway dumpster but is saved in the nick of time by a pediatrician, played by Matthew McConaughey. Lopez thinks that she has finally found the love of her life. However, the only problem is that McConaughey’s character is actually the fiancé of the internet mogul that Lopez was paid to be the planner of their wedding.

Renee Zellweger’s character’s life in this next film isn’t going as she hoped it would be. She feels like she’s getting older, she struggles with her image and her job. However, her New Year’s Resolution is to finally get her life back in order. And this means that she will keep a diary of her life where she has to tell the complete truth. Very soon after, her boss, played by Hugh Grant, starts to take a romantic interest in her, Zellweger decides to just go for it. At the same time, she keeps running into a lawyer who has known her since she was a child, who now seems to take an interest in her as well.

This next rom com stars Matthew McConaughey as a successful ad executive who is on the verge of landing a huge account. The only problem is that McConaughey’s boss think that it would be better suited for one of the women execs. McConaughey decides to bet his female coworkers that he can make any woman fall in love with him and if he is able to, he gets the big account. The women choose Kate Hudson’s character as the target, and she just so happens to be a writer writing an article about how to get a guy to leave you very quickly. Will McConaughey be able to pull it off?

After playing matchmaker to two of the school’s teachers, Silverstone tries to give the new kid at school, played by Brittany Murphy, a makeover. However, when this new student starts to become more popular than her, Silverstone starts to realize just how misguided she has been. Oh yeah, and did I forget to mention that Silverstone’s character ends up falling for her step brother? Because, yeah, that actually happens.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in this next romantic comedy as a greeting card writer who is blindsided when his girlfriend, played by Zooey Deschanel, dumps him. After this overwhelming breakup, Levitt looks back on the time they spent together and tries to figure what went wrong in their relationship. And in his attempt to figure where their love went wrong, Levitt is able to discover what his real passions are. Think you know the name of this film?

Jason Segel stars as Peter Bretter, who is struggling musician currently working on his puppet/Dracula musical. However, Peter Bretter is known more for having a TV star girlfriend, than from any of his music. When his TV star girlfriend dumps him, Bretter has a hard time trying to cope with it until he eventually decides to finally get over her by taking a solo trip to Hawaii. However, the only problem is that when Bretter gets to Hawaii, he discovers that his ex is staying at the same hotel as him, along with her new rock star boyfriend, played by Russell Brand.

When Ted, played by Ben Stiller, finally gets the attention of the most popular girl in school, played by Cameron Diaz, she agrees to go to the prom with him. However, this prom date never comes to fruition as a result of one of the most embarrassing mishaps seen in film. After the years go by, Ted decides to finally track down his old high school sweetheart with the help of a claims investigator, Pat Healy, played by Matt Dillon. The only problem is when Healy tracks her down, he ends up falling in love with her too. Ted now has to navigate all of the people who have fallen in love with her in order to win back his high school sweetheart.

Gosling helps Carell get over his divorce by giving him a much needed makeover and teaches him how to pick up women at bars. However, all why this is happening, Carell’s son is struggling with this own girl problems, having fallen for the older babysitter who has a crush on Carell.

I’m sure as you all know, Junior High can be tough. So what do you do when you’re socially awkward in junior high with no boyfriend? Well if you’re like our teenager Jenna in this next film, played by Christa Allen, you simply get trapped in a closet and then become a grown-up overnight. Yeah, you heard right. When Jenna is unable to find a boyfriend, she imagines herself as being an adult. However, just as luck would have it, her dreams become reality and she is transformed into a 30 year old, now played by Jennifer Garner. And if she thought being a teen was bad, being an adult is even harder.

Adam Sandler stars as Robbie Hart, a wannabe rock star who makes a living performing at weddings. When Robbie is set to marry his fiancé, Linda, she leaves him at the altar, which causes Robbie to lose all faith in love. When Julia, played by Drew Barrymore, asks Robbie to help plan her wedding, he falls in love with her and attempts to stop her wedding by hopping on a plane and serenading her with the help of Billy Idol.

Show of hands, has anyone here ever been a bridesmaid? If so, you can probably relate a lot to this next romantic comedy. Katherine Heigl stars as Jane, a woman who has been a bridesmaid a whopping 27 times. Before I go any further, that would mean that she has 27 friends that she’s close enough with that would want her to be a bridesmaid. That’s probably the craziest thing in this movie. However, when Jane’s sister is set to marry the man that Jane secretly loves, she finds herself unsure of being a bridesmaid for the first time. At the same time, a reporter thinks Jane’s unusual story will make a great article.

In this next film, Sandler stars as Danny Maccabee, a plastic surgeon who uses an old wedding ring to help pick up women. His constant lying eventually backfires when he ends up falling for Palmer, played by Brooklyn Decker. Instead of just telling Palmer the truth, that he’s not really married, Danny gets his assistant Katherine, played by Jennifer Aniston, to pose as his wife, or soon to be ex-wife. However, as you have probably guessed, this only causes more problems.

Being the babyface that she is, Josie is tasked with posing as a high school student at her former school in order to learn as much as she can about the current teenage subculture. Thanks to the help of her brother, played by David Arquette, Josie is able to infiltrate the clique of the most popular kids in school. However, things don’t always go as planned. While dealing with her own failed botched life, Josie also falls for one of the teachers in the school.

Look, I wish I had more time to tell you about this next romantic comedy, but I really don’t have the time. I have to get out of here quickly. I have a stage five clinger. This next rom com stars Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as divorce mediators who like to spend their free time doing constructive things. And by that, I mean going to weddings that they weren’t invited to. When the wedding of the daughter of the Secretary of the Treasury is announced, Vaughn and Wilson see this as the biggest event of the year. After sneaking into the wedding, their plan gets derailed when Wilson ends up falling for one of the bridesmaids.

Well, Schumer starts to fall back into her old ways, and she begins to wonder if she can finally get her life back in order.

However, Reynolds still longs for his high school bestie and when a plane incident causes him to land back in his hometown, he tries to win her back.

Well, in their attempt to make those other people jealous, they begin to realize that they have strong feelings for each other.

As you have probably already guessed, these two do not like each other at all. However, when they two start chatting anonymously online, they quickly fall in love with each other. Moreover, this film follows a Pakistani stand up comic who encounters a grad student who was in the audience for a show of his. As they begin a relationship, Nanjiani worries that his religious parents won’t be accepting of her and when she suddenly becomes ill, Nanjiani develops a strong bond with her parents.

Not to mention that it tackles the issue of dementia in a great way. Sandler stars as Henry Roth, a single guy living in Hawaii who sees tons of women. However, once he meets Lucy Whitmore, played by Barrymore, he immediately falls for her. The two spend time together and think that his could be the start of something serious. However, the next day, she doesn’t recognize him. I don’t want to give too much away, but Sandler does whatever it takes to make it work between them.

The Farrelly brothers directed this next hilarious rom com that stars Ben Stiller as Eddie, the owner of a sporting goods store who meets a gorgeous woman named Lila, played by Malin Akerman. After barely getting to know each other, Eddie decides to propose to Lila. What could possibly go wrong, right? Well, it turns out that Eddie probably should have waited to get to know Lila a little better because on their honeymoon, Eddie starts to see who Lila truly is and she’s a total shrew. Eddie soon meets Miranda, played by Michelle Monaghan, and thinks he has found his one and only. Now, Eddie has to romance Miranda while trying to break free from Lila.

However, as in love as he thinks they are, on their honeymoon, he finds her with the scuba instructor. When Reuben gets back home, he tries to get his life together and while at a party, meets an old friend, played by Jennifer Aniston. Reuben falls for her, but being the risk analyst he is, he keeps trying to calculate their relationship.

Anywho, this film stars Hugh Grant as a carefree bachelor who, in trying to pick up women, creates a fake son and starts going to single parent gatherings. While carrying on this charade, Grant meets a 12 year old, Marcus, who is having problems at school. Grant and this kid quickly become good friends and while Grant teaches him how to be cooler, Marcus teaches him how to act like a grown up.

This next romantic comedy features quite the all-star cast. In this film, friends in their 20s and 30s are all trying to navigate through the ins and outs of modern dating and relationships. In one part, you have Jennifer Aniston and Ben Affleck. She wants to get married, while he doesn’t see the point in it. In another part, you have Ginnifer Goodwin, who is sick of waiting around for a phone call. And then you have Drew Barrymore, who has a ton of male friends who support her, but none of them are straight. And finally, you have Jennifer Connelly who is having problems trusting her husband, played by Bradley Cooper.

Would you look at that… It would appear that we have another romantic comedy about another unexpected pregnancy. Perhaps this is becoming the new norm in the category. Or maybe it’s just a coincidence. Either way, it makes for some great plot points. In this next film, Jenny Slate stars a Donna Stern, a twenty-something aspiring comedian. Despite preconceived notions of rom coms, the two do end up getting engaged, but the proposal doesn’t quite go as planned. This will ultimately set the stage for what is about to come with them. Every time Tom and Violet set a date for their wedding, they are faced with a new set of obstacles. These obstacles begin to make them think that maybe their wedding just isn’t meant to happen.

Woody Allen did it all in this next film. And by that, I mean he wrote, directed, and starred in this next romantic comedy. Allen stars as Alvy Singer, a neurotic stand up comedian, who examines his up and down relationship with a nightclub singer, played by Diane Keaton. Alvy goes on a journey through his memories of his and Keaton’s relationship, trying to figure out what caused them to breakup. Alvy breaks the fourth wall throughout the film, which basically means that he speaks directly to the camera. Additionally, he also enters other people’s stories and uses animation as well.
