Chick flicks can be romantic comedy movies or simply movies with a mostly female cast, but they will almost definitely involve a love story. Thanks to the popular demand for these movies, they are among the highest grossing movies of all time. A chick flick in the comedy genre will generally do much better at the box office than the average comedy. The romantic comedy, The Proposal, made $317 million at the worldwide box office; Anchorman only made $90 million!
Romantic comedies do not exclusively appeal to women. There is not a rule that people who aren't women are not allowed to go into the theater or click them on Netflix. But based on the name of the romcom genre, it is pretty obvious that the target audience for these movies is mainly women.
