When it comes to 90s kids, there are many shows that they remember. Cartoons like The Fairly OddParents, Invader Zim, and Ed, Edd n Eddy were some of the most popular at the time. That said, when comparing all of these cartoons, there are none that even come close to the level of SpongeBob SquarePants.
This show about the misadventures of a talking sponge and his group of friends, it was a hit instantly. Creator Stephen Hillenburg had brought such a smart level of humor to the show that resonated with both kids and adults. The characters were all extremely well-designed, and it only cemented the show as one of the most memorable productions in Nickelodeon history.
The popularity of the show has caused it to still be in production today, with Hillenburg recently returning to helm each episode. It's impressive that the sponge remains big even today, but those that have the greatest love for the show were familiar with the classic episodes.
Those episodes introduced an impressive roster of characters that are difficult to remember for those that don't regularly watch the show. If you weren't born in the 90s, then you'll probably have a hard time naming all of these characters from SpongeBob SquarePants.
Who is this character?
This character is the entire reason that the show works as well as it does. Each episode follows his adventures with his friends or at the Krusty Krab. He has a happy-go-lucky attitude and sees the positive in most circumstances. He lives in a pineapple under the sea, has a pet snail, and loves his minimum wage job as a fry cook. Some of his hobbies include jellyfishing, karate, and trying so desperately to get his driver's license for a boat.

This character is SpongeBob's best friend. However, his entire existence is a joke. While never explicitly stated, this starfish lives under a rock, quite literally explaining his relative absence of intelligence. While he can be dumb sometimes, he has a good heart and means well. There's something endearing about his personality. That said, he became a bit more uninteresting after the debut of the first SpongeBob SquarePants movie. Still, those who grew up with the show look fondly on this character.

This character is a big reason why SpongeBob SquarePants is such a funny show. With characters that love making jokes and doing dumb things, there must be a straight man who doesn't find them entertaining. That's where this character comes in. Living in the same neighborhood as both SpongeBob and Patrick, he is a cultured man of the arts. Because of his sophistication, he has no care for the crazy antics of his neighbors. He also works at the Krusty Krab.

This character is the owner and manager of the restaurant known as the Krusty Krab. Having developed a beloved secret formula to the Krabby Patty, his restaurant attracts people from all across Bikini Bottom. That said, he has an impeccable love of money. Because of this, he is extremely greedy and will take any opportunity he can to save money. This includes underpaying his employees, overpricing his food items, and being generally unfair in the restaurant. He's still a good-natured character, though.
Who is this character?
This character is the oddball in SpongeBob SquarePants. Having originally lived in the wide open spaces of Texas, she came to the sea complete with a suit that she could use to live and breathe underwater. Due to her background, she is a very tough girl. Having mastered the art of karate and strength training, she can compete with the best of the underwater folk. On top of that, she also happens to be brilliant, inventing impressive contraptions almost everyday.

This character is the "villain" of the series. Being the rival of Mr. Krabs, he opened a restaurant across from the street of the Krusty Krab called the Chum Bucket. Unfortunately, he almost never gets any business due to his food being awful. In order to beat his rival in the business scene, he tries to steal the Secret Formula from the Krusty Krab so that he can make krabby patties of his own. That said, he often fails in his schemes.

This character is the beloved pet of SpongeBob. Often seen sleeping on the floor next to the sponge's bed, it is a crucial part of SpongeBob's life. He always makes sure that this adorable snail is fed and taken care of. That said, the snail can be quite difficult to manage, considering that it has a cat-like personality at times. When it really wants food, it has been known to willingly leave SpongeBob so pursue the delicious treat that it senses.

This character is feared across all of Bikini Bottom. Going down in legend for terrorizing pirates on the surface, many were shocked to figure out that he was real. Being a ghost, he has his very own ghost ship that he can pilot both above and below water. He has a powerful sense of pride and isn't afraid to use his ghostly powers to threaten the citizens of Bikini Bottom. He'll easily make deals with the living to make their eternity a living Hell.

This character is, strangely enough, the daughter of Mr. Krabs (despite having no biological connection there). That said, it's clear that she and her father love each other very much. Pearl is designed like a stereotypical teenager, though, and presents a lot of problems most parents would expect from their little girls. Several episodes have addressed Pearl getting a job, being stood up for prom, and celebrating her birthday. She's difficult, but that will never stop Mr. Krabs from loving her.

This character is the teacher at a boating school. Constantly teaching students about the dos and don'ts of driving, she has administered several tests and passed many of her students. That said, there is one student she has never passed: SpongeBob. The Sponge always tends to panic when it comes to actually taking his driving test, and he always ends up crashing through a building. Because of this, the teacher has grown to resent him and tried to kill him before.

Ghosts, greedy crabs, and insane pufferfish aren't the only creatures that inhabit the world of Bikini Bottom. Superheroes and super villains also live in the waters, doing battle for the souls of the people in the process. This hero is way past his crime fighting days, but he still has a good heart. Often being the first to respond at the first sign of evil, he is always ready to spring into action despite being slightly senile in his old age.

This character is another one of the superheroes in Bikini Bottom. Having since retired after his crime fighting days, he spends his days at the Shady Shoals retirement home. However, he happens to be more in the right mind than his older partner. Most people are quick to make fun of him due to his boyish figure and the fact that he often played second fiddle to his partner back in their heyday. He also has a very big nose.

Plankton is an interesting character for a lot of reasons, but the biggest head-scratcher is the fact that he's married to a computer. When originally appearing, she was the big monitor in his lab and would often give him sarcastic advice on what to do to get the Secret Formula. While she tends to nag Plankton a lot, she does love him in her own way. She's even been known to make fun of her husband like a normal wife would.

This character is known for being one of the most muscular creatures in all of Bikini Bottom. He doesn't have many character traits outside of his physical strength, but it's often used for SpongeBob to play off of. He has been known to be a lifeguard and attract the attention of all the ladies. Anyone else in the undersea town doesn't compare to the sheer physique of this guy. Even retired Navy veteran, Mr. Krabs, isn't on his level at all.

This character doesn't actually appear in the show (specifically in Bikini Bottom). Instead, he only appears on the special episodes. There are a few live-action segments where he'll walk through and express how much he loves SpongeBob and is obsessed with him. He has an adorable little parrot that tends to be more of a nuisance than a help. This character has also expressed some hallucinogenic tendencies. He once went to Nickelodeon headquarters to try and find the real SpongeBob.
Who is this character?
This character is known as the rival to Squidward. The two knew each other very well in high school, but this character went on to be extremely successful and artistic while Squidward ended up working in a fast food restaurant. He often spends his days rubbing it in Squidward's face that he was much more rich and famous in adulthood. What makes it worse is that he isn't visually different from Squidward apart from wearing more luxurious attire and having a unibrow.

This character was a villain for Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy back in the day. To make matters worse, he doesn't seem to have aged where the superheroes definitely have. This means that this character is still in his prime and capable of terrorizing Bikini Bottom as effectively as he could back in the day. He has experimented with being good once, but that didn't go so well for him. On top of that, he even fought SpongeBob and Patrick.

This character has appeared consistently throughout the series. Often used for a recurring joke, many eagle-eyed fans have pointed out the fact that a few different designs have been used for the character. This has led the creation of a fan theory that involves different timelines or more sinister dealings that led to several versions of the same character. Of course, the writers eventually settled on one design for the fish and it has since remains consistent in the series.

This character was created when a magic pencil came down to Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob found the pencil and found that whatever he drew came to life. Because of this, he decided to draw a self-portrait. However, the drawing came to life and started to go crazy, taking the pencil and drawing other objects to fight SpongeBob. However, SpongeBob and Patrick worked together to subdue this terrifying drawing. Despite their efforts, though, the drawing would later return to try and terrorize them.
Who is this character?
This character was another villain who operated around the same time as Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. After the two heroes retired, it seemed that this villain wasn't working anymore. That said, once SpongeBob expressed his fandom for the old heroes and started working with them, this villain resurfaced. As a matter of fact, he had trapped Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. It was only a result of SpongeBob's quick thinking (and the use of a pencil) that saved the day.
Who is this character?
This character appeared very early on in SpongeBob SquarePants. He went to the Krusty Krab and was shown to have some sort of rivalry with SpongeBob. He asked for one of the most massive Krabby Patties ever and the sponge made it for him. However, he criticized SpongeBob for neglecting the placement of pickles. This sent the sponge on a fit where he retired from work to get his head straight. Imagine everyone's hatred of Bubble Bass when it was discovered that he lied about there being no pickles.

These characters are recurring guest stars in SpongeBob SquarePants. Because SpongeBob is an adult, we often don't see what his family is like. However, on specific occasions, we get to see his relatives come into the picture. The most popular ones are these two lovebirds here. Being the parents of SpongeBob, they will show up when their son is performing or when he needs help. They don't appear a lot because they live on a town outside of Bikini Bottom.

This character was created by SpongeBob in one episode. The yellow sponge wanted a friend to hang out with, so he decided to blow a bubble in the shape of a person. He then proceeded to take the bubble around with him wherever he wanted. They ate together, partied together, and inadvertently offended every single person along the way. When some people tried to pop the bubble, though, it turned out that he was a living being who grew a conscience.

This character is the ruler of the sea. He often stays out of conflicts in Bikini Bottom unless absolutely necessary. In the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, his royal crown was stolen by Plankton. Because Mr. Krabs was framed for it, he traveled all the way to the Krusty Krab to punish the owner of the restaurant. He carried a trident with him and is willing to execute anyone who gets in his way. He also has a bald spot that he calls "thinning."

This character is often seen at big moments in Bikini Bottom. Working with the local news station, he is the face of the news. Appearing at nearly every big event, he has had a few different colors over the series, but has had relatively the same design. Many of the show's citizens are all too eager to talk to him and sweeten him up when he comes to their events. He was there at the opening of the Krusty Krab 2.

This character appeared in the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Being the daughter of King Neptune, she was first in line to become the ruler of the sea. Unlike her father, she had a much milder temper and knew all of the sea creatures by name. She was also memorable because Patrick had a serious crush on her. She helped SpongeBob and Patrick in their quest to get to Shell City and save the crown. She also helped and delay her dad's punishment to many people.

This character first came into the show when he showed up at Mrs. Puff's Boating School. He sat next to SpongeBob and the yellow sponge said hi. After that, he looked at the sponge and said that he was going to kick his butt. SpongeBob was then immediately afraid for his life as this character tried to seriously injure him. Little did the big fish know that SpongeBob's body composition would absorb the impact of each punch he could throw.

This character hasn't appeared a lot in the show, but she did get an entire episode dedicated to her. When SpongeBob visited her, he was made fun of at work for the type of affection that the two of them shared (as if he were a little kid). Because of this, SpongeBob decided to become a man and refuse her cookies, milk, and kisses. However, he came to the realization that it was okay to accept that type of love.

Squidward had been pushed to his limit with all the time SpongeBob and Patrick were trying to spend with him. Because of this, he hid in the Krusty Krab freezer to get away from them. However, the door was locked and he was stuck there for several years. When he finally awoke, he was met by a new version of SpongeBob who welcomed him to the future. This future SpongeBob helped Squidward get back to his own time with a time machine.

SpongeBob went over to Patrick's to find his best friend frantically cleaning. It turned out that his parents were coming over to his rock in honor of Starfish Day. His parents finally showed up, and they were extremely disrespectful to SpongeBob, so he left in a fit. However, once they called each other by name, Patrick realized that they weren't his real parents. They left Patrick's home under the remembrance that they didn't have a son. The episode brushes that off quickly.
Who is this character?
At a Jellyfish Convention, SpongeBob and Patrick became enamored with the Jelly Spotters- a legendary group of jellyfish hunters. Their leader was SpongeBob's idol. Because of this, SpongeBob tried to spend the day with them. However, the leader was intent on making SpongeBob's day awful because he thought he was pitiful and annoying. That said, everything backfired on the character and the Jelly Spotters ended up electing SpongeBob as their new leader and leaving the old one out to rot.

This character was found littering in Bikini Bottom while SpongeBob was on duty. When the criminal asked SpongeBob what he was going to do about it, the sponge simply called the police. In that moment, the criminal vowed that he would do whatever it took to make sure that SpongeBob was dead in the next few days. After breaking from police custody, he hatched an elaborate plan to make sure that he had his chance and SpongeBob would be killed.

This character is often seen in the episodes where SpongeBob and his friends are at the Goo Lagoon. Having a stereotypical design and attitude of a surfer bro, this fish has a very distinct way of talking. He also loves surfing and has a carefree attitude. That said, some interesting things have happened to him. One episode saw him surfing on SpongeBob instead of a regular board and another saw him drowning in high tide at the hands of Bubble Buddy.

When Mr. Krabs had a yard sale, he was selling a soda drinking hat with "#1" on the front. Of course, SpongeBob went nuts for it and bought it. After being offered $1 million dollars for it, Mr. Krabs went back to try and get it from SpongeBob. He did this by telling him it belonged to a guy who was already dead. He was the real "#1." Apparently, the made-up story that Mr. Krabs told happened to be true.
