Since its creation in 2012, The CW and DC's Arrow has been a big topic of discussion among comic book fans. The first two seasons were some of the greatest TV you could watch at the time, while the third and fourth were a bit lacking. With season five recently concluding and season six on the horizon, there is a lot of reason to love the show again (though it may be too late for a lot of people).
In the five years that Arrow has been out, there is a lot of history built in Star City and its respective characters. We've learned everything there is to know about Oliver's time on Lian Yu and even more about the people he surrounds himself with.
Because there are five years worth of backstory to go through, it's a great time to test your knowledge on the series. Fans won't have a problem answering a few questions, but others may find it a bit challenging. Are you ready? How well do you know Arrow?
What does "Lian Yu" mean?
After Oliver Queen was shipwrecked, he came to a distant island that was mostly unknown to anyone. The people who had heard of it named it "Lian Yu," which was a phrase in Mandarin. This phrasing was later explained to Oliver by the people he met during his five years "in Hell." It was on this island where he was tested in every way. He had to learn to fight as well as detach himself from the things that kept his humanity alive.
Did Rip Hunter appeared on Arrow before going to Legends of Tomorrow?
Because the creators of Arrow wanted to expand their universe with more TV shows, a lot of the new characters would first appear in that show to tease other projects. Because they were working on Legends of Tomorrow, the writers put in several hints to that show in both Arrow and The Flash, trying to get new viewers to check out this unique story. What is Felicity Smoak's codename?
As Team Arrow expanded, Oliver knew that it would no longer be acceptable to call everyone by name. However, one person that he waited a while to give a codename to was Felicity. This was because she was the "girl in the chair" and sat in the bunker, giving them support from behind the scenes. Thankfully, for the sake of her identity, Oliver gave her a codename in season four that has since stuck with the team. It also served as a great easter egg.
What was the name of Damien Darhk's organization?
For Arrow season 4, the writers decided to bring in a character who didn't have much information in the comics so they could flesh him out for their own purposes. Damien Darhk was a figurehead in every story that he was in, and he served the same purpose in the show. In the time Arrow has been created, the writers have brought in some clever and not so clever ways of killing off character, but still keeping the actors around to use in the show. When done perfectly, these deaths bring on the feels and make us wish the outcome could've turned out differently. Where some of the other seasons presented a more mental challenge to Oliver, season three presented a physical one. To put it simply, Oliver was outmatched by the people he fought, but it never stopped him from grabbing his bow and fighting. In the midseason finale, he fought a one on one with an antagonist. The two went back and forth, and despite almost taking the victory, Oliver was defeated and stabbed through the chest. Then he was pushed off of a cliff.

In the early days of season one, we were shown Oliver's flashbacks on Lian Yu, where he teamed up with a man known as Slade Wilson (Deathstroke). The two formed a quick alliance, but in season 2, when Slade came to Star City, it was clear that they weren't on the same terms. In the flashbacks, it was revealed that Slade was exposed to a formula that caused people to become extremely powerful, but at the cost of their own sanity.

The mantle of Black Canary has been constantly in a state of flux. While it seemed a few times that there would be someone to hold that title for a long time, a tragedy occurred and another individual had to take over. In season five, there was a lot of time devoted to bringing another person to the team to become the new Black Canary- one who would stay on the roster for a long time. They eventually found one.

The Green Arrow character has amassed an eclectic cast of villains over the years. While they don't outdo bigger DC character like Batman or the Flash, these villains still provide interesting conflicts for the Emerald Archer. The sad part here is that, in the show, many of these villains have already been used, and not in a good way. Thankfully, going forward, it seems that the writers are going to learn how to better use these classic characters in the show.

He does this by having a lot of training equipment in his bunker, which he will do in his spare time, whether other people are there or not. One episode of Legends of Tomorrow brought the team to a futuristic and dystopian Star City. It was there that Deathstroke's son had taken over and killed most of the heroes that protected it. However, a Green Arrow still lived in the city, but it wasn't Oliver Queen. This young hero ended up working with the Legends as well as finding a beaten Oliver to join the fray. It remains to be seen if this person will appear again in any of the three shows.
Where was Deathstroke imprisoned after being defeated?
Oliver's big arc in season two was that he wasn't going to kill anyone. He best friend died thinking he was a killer, so he decided to turn over a new leaf. However, when Deathstroke came back to cause trouble, that motivation was put to the test. This character didn't have much to do with the Arrow TV show, but he appeared nonetheless. Having a history in the comics, it was sad to see such a disservice done to the character here as a one-off antagonist for the Green Arrow to fight. He basically served as a bodyguard of sorts who knew how to beat people up really well. He didn't have much dialogue or weight over the series itself. Why the writers gave him that name, we'll never know.

ARGUS is the official government organization that exists in the Arrowverse. It's there that many of the supervillains were kept and held so that they wouldn't get out in the world again. As you can imagine, a lot of dark dealings took place in ARGUS, causing the Green Arrow to get in the middle of it several times. The original director of ARGUS was killed at some point in the show, leaving a newer character to take over the organization.
Which of these characters was NOT a member of the Suicide Squad?
Before DC decided they wanted a massive Suicide Squad movie, there was a smaller group of villains working together on Arrow. Brought together by ARGUS, they were assigned special tasks that took place in distant lands overseas. The roster was filled with people who had already taken a spot in Arrow to give more familiarity with the group. Labeling themselves the Suicide Squad, they got into all sorts of trouble, despite having the on-field supervision of John Diggle and Lyla.
What was the name of the season 3 finale?
At the end of season 3, Oliver finally proved to be tricking Ra's al Ghul the entire time, which resulted in the Demon's Head enacting his plan to rid Star City of all life. Immediately, Team Arrow and the League sprang into action to try and see their plans completed. However, Oliver and his friends weren't alone. Nyssa al Ghul and Malcolm Merlyn joined the fray, as the threat of the League was hanging over all of their heads. All hands were needed on deck.
Who was Brandon Routh originally going to play in the show?
A lot of plans were in the works at the CW to put many big characters into Arrow much earlier. Brandon Routh originally signed on to play a character other than Ray Palmer. Many things were at work to allow this character to appear in season 3, but for some reason, the writers eventually scrapped this idea. The inner workings of this can still be felt in the show, and we would've much rather seen the original plan, but we still like Brandon Routh.
Which Arrowverse crossover involved an alien invasion?
Ever since the CW introduced the Flash to its roster, the writers have planned for all of the superhero shows to crossover at least once a year. Each one presented a unique challenge that our heroes could only face together. As the shows went on, the bigger and more serious the challenges became, requiring that they get more heroes on board. Eventually, they would bring in Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl into the mix to help fight for the world.
Where did the flashbacks in season five take place?
Because the writers had five years of flashbacks to tell in Arrow, they knew that they couldn't just get by with having Oliver on the island at all times. Because of this, they moved him around to various places around the world to liven things up. He went back to Lian Yu several times as well, meaning that each season was going to present something a little more interesting going forward. The flashbacks didn't always land, but it was nice to see how Oliver became the ruthless vigilante he was in season one.

During the 100th episode of Arrow, the writers took it as an opportunity to explore the history that the show had brought since that time. Many people (even those who were dead) appeared once again as a final hurrah. One of the people who was absent was Tommy Merlyn, Oliver's best friend in season one. When asking his father Malcolm why he didn't appear, the Dark Archer simply replied with a phrase that had a bit of interesting truth in television.
How did Prometheus die?
Prometheus put Oliver's mind to its very limit. He kidnapped everyone Oliver loved, threatened their lives, and tortured his soul, all just to get Oliver to kill him and prove that he was a murderer. As the conflict escalated in season five, the finale brought all of those plotlines to a head as Oliver and Prometheus faced off one on one. The two fought until something big changed their dynamic. The episode ended with Prometheus's death. How did he die?
Did Oliver killed Felicity's boyfriend?
In seasons one and two, the writers often teased a relationship between Oliver and Felicity. When seasons three and four happened, it was finally a reality, but few people were satisfied with the results. Because of this, they allowed the two to move on and see other people in season five. Along the way, Felicity got a new boyfriend, Billy Malone, who worked with the Star City Police Department. However, his time on the show wasn't long, as he was one of the people who went after Prometheus early on.
