Only 1 In 20 NHL Fans Know Which Teams Drafted These All-Stars

Hearing your name called at the National Hockey League (NHL) Draft is the culmination of more than a decade of hard work both on and off the ice. All young hockey players aspire to be drafted into the NHL, but it's a dream only achieved by individuals with both elite talent and an unwavering work ethic. It's not enough to be one of the most skilled players in junior hockey, you need to be willing to run through a wall to help your team - and in turn, yourself - succeed in the NHL.

Back in the day, prospective NHL players got to choose where they wanted to play. There was no draft during the Original Six era, meaning teams were allowed to scout and sign junior-aged players in a free market. That's partly the reason why teams like the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs were more successful than others - Montreal, in particular, had a monopoly on players born in the province of Quebec. That all changed in 1963, when the league hosted the first ever Amateur Draft. It was later re-named the Entry Draft and today is simply known as the NHL Draft. All 31 teams receive a pick in each of the seven rounds which they can either use to add to their prospect pool or trade for established players. The NHL Draft is arguably one of the most exciting events of the year - how well have you been following it lately?

Question 1

Which team drafted Eric Staal?

Thirty three year old Eric Staal is enjoying a bit of a career renaissance with the Minnesota Wild in the past two seasons. The Thunder Bay, Ontario native was the second overall pick in the 2003 NHL Draft and played for two different teams before joining the Wild in 2016-17 as a free agent. He had just 39 points the season prior, but produced 65 in 82 games in his first year with Minnesota. This past season, Staal recorded 76 points and scored 42 goals, which was the most he scored in a single season since 2005-06.

Question 2

Which team drafted Johnny Gaudreau?

Nicknamed Johnny Hockey because, well, why not? There's a Johnny Football (Manziel) and Johnny Wrestling (Gargano), so it only made sense to give a similar nickname to the diminutive, but super-talented winger Johnny Gaudreau. A 24 year old native of Salem, New Jersey, Gaudreau was selected in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Draft, which is surprising given the impressive career he has had since. He won the Hobey Baker Award as the best player in the NCAA in 2014 after an 80-point season with Boston College and has since recorded 288 points in 312 career NHL games.

Question 3

Question 4

Which team drafted Matt Murray?

Matt Murray won his first Stanley Cup before the start of his official rookie season. The following season, he was still a rookie and, although he didn't win the Calder Trophy, he did win his second consecutive Stanley Cup. Question 6

Which team drafted Blake Wheeler?

For the first five or six years of his career, Blake Wheeler, an alumnus of the University of Minnesota, failed to live up to the high standards that come with being the fifth overall pick in the NHL Draft. He produced a then-career-high of 64 points in 2011-12 and, save for the lockout-shortened 2012-13 campaign, has produced at least 60 points in each of the next six seasons. He posted a career-best 91 points to lead the Jets in scoring this past season.

He has scored at least 33 goals in four of the past five seasons, including this past year in which he finished with a career-best 40 tallies.
