Not Even Squidward Could Pass This SpongeBob Quiz

If anyone has been keeping up with the news, they would know the sad news that touched the "SpongeBob SquarePants" community at the end of November. This one goes out to Steven Hillenberg, the late creator of everyone's favorite Nickelodeon series, "SpongeBob SquarePants".

But, who was Steven Hillenberg? He was originally going to become a marine biologist. After growing up in Anaheim, California, Hillenberg went on to study marine biology at Humboldt State University. He was inspired by diving in the ocean as a teenager to pursue this field. He also minored in art, and went on to land a job at the Orange County Marine Institute. Hillenberg used his passions and talents to develop a learning tool for children in the form of a comic book about tide pool creatures.

While working as a teacher at the Institute, Hillenberg gained further interest in animation. In 1987, he decided to change careers and sought a masters degree for animation. His first professional animation job was on the Nickelodeon show, "Rocko's Modern Life". During this time, he further developed his comic book into what eventually became "SpongeBob SquarePants". He pitched the idea in 1997, and it has been the network's most successful program.

Here's to Steven Hillenberg. Thank you for creating the show we all grew up with and reference into adulthood.

Question 1

What Network does SpongeBob SquarePants appear on?

SpongeBob SquarePants is a children's animated television show that first appeared on this network in 1999. The show is about the main character, a yellow sea sponge named SpongeBob Squarepants and his adventures in Bikini Bottom. Despite his childlike characteristics, SpongeBob appears to be a full on adult. He has a job, a home, and he lives alone in a pineapple with a pet. It seems to be well furnished as well which makes us wonder what the cost of living is like in the ocean.

Question 2

Who is SpongeBob's best friend?

SpongeBob lives under water, as a sea sponge should, in a house where he shares a street with two neighbors. One, under a large brown rock, and the other in a tiki like structure. In Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob is a popular guy. Not only does he work at the best burger place in the area, The Krusty Krab, but he's just a friendly sponge that wants to have a good time. He does have one best friend who is always ready to play or go jellyfishing.

Question 3

What kind of fruit does SpongeBob live in?

How this fruit got underwater and became a house for a childish sea sponge is beyond me. Along with his two neighbors, it appears that SpongeBob lives in a quiet residential neighborhood. Quiet, that is, until he and his neighbors create indisputable antics. From street side, SpongeBob's house has two windows, a chimney, and a large metal door that opens with a crank. The read questions is, is SpongeBob's house a real fruit or is it a real house shaped like said fruit?

Question 4

Who is Gary?

The cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants has a variety of characters. Almost all of them are sea creatures that live on the ocean floor. For example, Patrick is a Sea Star, Mr. Krabs is a crab, and of course, SpongeBob is a Sea Sponge. The one exception of a character on this television show who doesn't live naturally underwater is Sandy. She's a small mammal from Texas that lives in a special pressurized dome of oxygen. To hang out in the ocean, she also has an oxygen suit.

Question 5

What is Mr. Krab's daughter's name?

Mr. Krab's, owner and operator of The Krusty Krab, has a daughter. We don't know too much about her aside from the fact that she's a whale, a daddy's girl, and a stereotypical teenage girl. She lives in an anchor with her father and nothing is known about her mother. Is it safe to assume that she's a whale too? Because how do those genetics work if Mr. Krab's is obviously a crab. Maybe she is adopted? Either way, her father loves and treats her well.

Question 6

Where does SpongeBob live?

Where does SpongeBob actually live, and not just in a pineapple under the sea? Aside from being in the Pacific ocean, SpongeBob's place of residence is loosely based on a location in the Marshall Islands that was used as a nuclear test site between 1946 and 1958. Maybe that's why all of these ocean creatures have houses and jobs. The network and creators deny this comparison to the real life location, but it's always interesting to look into the deeper meanings of things.

Question 7

What instrument does Squidward play?

Squidward believes he is a piece of fine art compared to his imbecile friends, SpongeBob and Patrick. While Squidward enjoys things like music, theatre, and quiet time, SpongeBob and Patrick are always gallivanting around. I mean, can you really imagine Squidward jellyfishing, or going to a place like Glove World? No, he would rather sit inside, maybe take a bubble bath (a bubble bath underwater?) and listen to some classical music on a record player. Sounds like a great night to me.

Question 8

What kind of animal is Squidward?

Only true SpongeBob SquarePants fans know what animal Squidward is. Is this a hint that the answer may surprise you, or to challenge your beliefs about this melodramatic character? Squidward tries to live a normal life like the rest of us. He has his own home and a decent job, despite his feelings about it and his coworkers. However, it seems that SpongeBob and Patrick are always ruining the peaceful life he tries to build for himself. Not even noise cancelling headphones can handle SpongeBob's laugh.

Question 9

What is Spongebob's job?

SpongeBob works at the Krusty Krab with Squidward and his boss, Mr. Krabs. Seems like a small world when you work with your next-door neighbor. SpongeBob loves this, but Squidward wishes the opposite. At this successful burger restaurant, opposite of failing restaurant, The Chum Bucket, Mr. Krabs keeps the secret to his success in a safe. The owner of The Chum Bucket, Plankton, is always trying to obtain the secret formula of the Krusty Krab's burgers. He, however, is never successful.

Question 10

What is the name of Plankton's wife?

Plankton is the small, one eyed, enemy of the Krusty Krab. In believing that the secret formula of the Krusty Krab burgers would save his drab restaurant, The Chum Bucket, Pankton is constantly on the prowl for those secret ingredients. There are countless episodes where Plankton thinks of an elaborate scheme to attempt and heist the secret formula from Mr. Krabs. The crew at The Krusty Krab, however, usually are able to extinguish his plans before even coming close to the secret formula.

Question 11

Who are SpongeBob's two neighbors?

Although it doesn't really matter, it's fun to think about the real estate market in Bikini Bottom. What does a house go for there, are there housing associations, what about apartment complexes? And can you honestly imagine SpongeBob shopping for a house? Let alone Patrick. How does all of that work under the sea? Who are the star real estate sellers in Bikini Bottom? Is it possible to purchase property with a pool on the ocean floor? Honestly, so many questions.

Question 12

What kind of animal is Sandy?

Imagine moving to a place where you couldn't breathe naturally? Sandy Cheeks moved from land to sea, and talk about a change of pace. The small mammal, who needs oxygen, basically lives in an oxygen suit when not at home. Sandy has a dome underwater that is pressurized to feel like the surface. Seasons even change within the dome, and Sandy will go into hibernation like she would on land. Though, we're unsure of how much snow Texas gets in comparison.

Question 13

Which character doesn't work at the Krusty Krab?

Is seems like every character on SpongeBob SquarePants has an association with The Krusty Krab. I mean, who wouldn't want to be involved? This is the best darn restaurant in Bikini Bottom! Especially when across the street from The Chum Bucket. But, what makes The Krusty Krab so special? We wish we could tell you - it's actually a heavily guarded secret by owner, Mr. Krabs...and rightfully so. The Chum Bucket owner, Plankton, is always looking for ways to make his business successful.

Question 14

What kind of restaurant is the Krusty Krab?

SpongeBob has been a happy employee of The Krusty Krab for some time. He's a very loyal employee, even though it seems that Mr. Krabs pays him as little as possible. That wouldn't matter though, we're pretty sure SpongeBob would come to the Krusty Krab to work even if his pay was completely cut. That's how devoted he is to his work. We can't say the same the Squidward. The money is probably the only thing keeping him working at this establishment.

Question 15

What song is played at the Bubble Bowl?

Squidward runs into an old music colleague that offers him the half time slot for the Bubble Bowl as a form of mockery. Squidward thinks he has stuck it to his old friend by bragging about the full orchestra he has. This leads Squidward to scramble all residents of Bikini Bottom to form a full orchestra. Things seem hopeless, as no one has the musical skills to play. This is until the day of the Bubble Bowl where SpongeBob takes control.

Question 16

What material does SpongeBob make a sweater out of?

In respect to Employee Brotherhood Day, SpongeBob makes a sweater for Squidward out of this material. This is way too much to handle for Squidward, he goes out to purchase a gift that would appear to be homemade. To make up for his terrible and accidental act, Squidward creates the perfect day for SpongeBob.

Question 17

What is Plankton's first name?

Like state school college boys with a catchy last name, this character most commonly referred to as Plankton. He is the owner and operator of the failing restaurant, The Chum Bucket. He and his computer wife try and come up with ideas to make the restaurant successful, but that's usually just stealing the recipe from the restaurant across the street, The Krusty Krab. People don't like The Chum Bucket because the food doesn't taste good and the atmosphere is drab.

Question 18

What color is SpongeBob's tie?

SpongeBob SquarePants seems to have a very particular style because he's in the same outfit every day. These square pants seem to be similar to that of khackis, and there are plenty in supply. So much so that it's his last name! For being a fry cook, SpongeBob dresses very professionally for his restaurant job behind a grill. Maybe it's just not what he does, but how he feels. Fashion is amazing like that. After all, he is loyal employee and hard worker.

Question 19

What pattern is on Patrick's swim trunks?

Not to be confused with the beauty influence on YouTube, Patrick Starr, this character on SpongeBob wears the same patterned swim trunks every day. At least, we hope they are not the same exact swim trunks, just the same style. Who knows with Patrick though. This Starfish lives under a rock, literally, and definitely doesn't have the best hygiene. He's best friends with SpongeBob, however, SpongeBob is definitely the more well adjusted of the two. Even by Squidward's high standards.

Question 20

What is the street name SpongeBob lives on?

You're definitely a SpongeBob SquarePants fan if you know this one...or you're just an observant casual fan. On this stretch of street lives Patrick Star, Squidward Tentacles, and SpongeBob Squarepants. Wondering where the information from this trivia question comes from? In this episode, SpongeBob gets his job at the Krusty Krab.

Question 21

This spunky squirrel is originally from Texas and she lives in a large oxygen safe zone on the ocean floor. How a small mammal like a squirrel obtained the technology to do so is unclear, but similarly, how does a crab run a sit down fast food restaurant?

Question 22

What is the name of SpongeBob's boating teacher?

Like operating a car in our world, the creatures in the SpongeBob world are required to have a license to operate a motor vehicle. In this case, critters drive boats instead of cars. SpongeBob has a super hard time getting his boating license. This is due to SpongeBob's classic childlike persona, despite it being estimated he's in his late twenties. Yikes. He appears to be a danger on the road, and though he's determined, SpongeBob is stuck in his ways.

Question 23

What's funnier than 24?

This classic SpongeBob moment comes from the season three episode, "New Student Starfish". When SpongeBob leaves the house, Patrick asks him to go jellyfishing. SpongeBob, however, has a prior commitment to boating school. Patrick is visually disappointed, so SpongeBob invites Patrick to come to school with him. Since they arrive almost three hours early, SpongeBob shows Patrick about the boating school. The teacher welcomes Patrick and asks for information to start the class. SpongeBob and Patrick fool around the whole time.

Question 24

What phrase does this character yell?

This character is part of a running gag on the series. He seems to be a typical fish resident of Bikini Bottom. His only article of clothing that is typically worn is a pair of brown high waisted pants with a black belt. No shoes, but god forbid you forget a belt. For reference, these pants pretty much go up to the armpit (finpits?)! Fred has been a background character since the episode "Reef Blower", but this bit started in the episode "Boating School".

Question 25

What year did the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie come out?

After being on Nickelodeon as a series since 1999, a full length feature movie was created. Previous attempts by Paramount Pictures to create a movie were denied by the series creator. Squidward gets a curious package in the mail, and it's his new pet snail. Since snails appear to be the cats of the ocean floor world, don't get PETA involved. Squidward is going to enter his snail in a race and he have high hopes that she will win, but SpongeBob has a different idea.

Question 27

Not saying that sea creatures are silly, but Sandy sure puts these barnacle brains in their places. This hobby of hers, she gets to enjoy with SpongeBob.

Question 28

What is the pirate host's name?

Not to be confused with the pirate painting in the intro of every SpongeBob episode (that's right, different pirates!) this live action pirate appears on specials and events as a host. This head of the SpongeBob SquarePants Fan Club is actually played by SpongeBob's voice actor, Tom Kenny. This pirate has a parrot named Potty and in special episodes, they will appear in the beginning, between commercial breaks, and at the end of the show. His first appearance was in "Christmas Who?".

In the season two episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, "Bossy Boots", Mr. Krab's daughter gets a job at the restaurant during her summer vacation. The teenage girl has a lot of ideas for The Krusty Krab, and SpongeBob and Squidward are reluctant to listen to their boss' daughter. She ends up renaming the restaurant and gives SpongeBob and Squidward new pink uniforms. She decides to turn The Krusty Krab into a trendy cafe with salads instead of burgers, which SpongeBob has never heard of.

Question 30

Complete: "Who's nautical ______ be something you wish?"

This line comes from the iconic theme song for SpongeBob SquarePants. Ever since 1999, when you heard the beginning of this song, you knew it was time for the best cartoon out there. This was back before TiVo and streaming services, so if you missed some of the episode during a commercial break, there was no going back. If it was an episode you've seen already, too bad it's all or nothing. No one really minds watching reruns of SpongeBob, though.

Question 31

What is SongeBob’s mother’s name?

Apparently family is still important for sea sponges. Although SpongeBob doesn't have a set age, his drivers license says he was born in 1986. Now, we have no idea how Sponges age and how it compares to human years, but that would make him almost 30. Talk about a man child! SpongeBob spends his free time jellyfishing and playing with Patrick. Maybe the standards of men in Bikini bottom are lower because that's not how to attract a person of a similar age.

Question 32

What town does SpongeBob get stranded in?

In this early 2000's episode of SpongeBob, Patrick and SpongeBob visit an amusement park called Glove World. If you haven't seen the episode, it's just what it sounds like...an amusement park themed around gloves. See what the plastic pollution is doing to our oceans? After having a fun time at Glove World, SpongeBob and Patrick set for home. They accidentally get on the wrong bus and get taken away from Bikini Bottom. Patrick is able to take the last bus home, leaving SpongeBob standard.

Question 33

What is the Krusty Krab in the shape of?

Despite being owned by a crab, the shape of the Krusty Krab is far from the shores of Maryland. Eugene Krabs owns the Krusty Krab and operates it with the help of two employees, SpongeBob and Patrick. The restaurant serves burgers that are flipped by SpongeBob in the kitchen. The Krusty Krab is probably such a success because Mr. Krabs keeps operation of business as low as possible, including shorting employees, and not being afraid of charging extra for burgers.

Question 34

What color are Squidward's Eyes?

There's a lot of elements to Squidward from his long nose, many legs, and large head. Hopefully that noggin is as great as he claims it to be. Then again, that's totally fair if you're dealing with people (fish?) like SpongeBob and Patrick all day. Squidward is interested in culture and art, and SpongeBob and Patrick create chaos all day...at least in his eyes. All that being said, have you ever noticed what color Squidward's eyes are? What's happening on either side of that nose.

Question 35

What design is on the Krusty Krab hats?

Most service jobs have some kind of uniformity. Whether that's wearing all black, or having a full uniform, it's important for customers to know who represents the establishment. Otherwise, you may ask another customer what the specials are and that's totally embarrassing! While Mr. Krabs puts SpongeBob and Squidward though a lot, they're free to wear their normal attire. However, they do both wear matching hats. They're small, blue and white, and have a little logo in the middle. Can you remember what it is?
