The Vampire Diaries was a television show that aired on The CW from September 2009 to March 2017. It aired for eight seasons, totaling 171 episodes. It was so popular that it inspired a spin-off series on the network called The Originals, which followed the lives of the Original vampires and their trials and tribulations while reclaiming New Orleans.
Elena Gilbert is arguably the most recognizable out of all the characters on the show. Why wouldn't she be? In addition to being the main character for the majority of the series' lifespan, the actress who played her, Nina Dobrev, also took on several other roles as doppelgängers. She took on at least four roles in addition to Elena, some of which were actually on-screen at the same time and even interacted with one another. Talk about talented, right?
However, there are plenty of other memorable and important characters in The Vampire Diaries. They're a surprisingly supernaturally diverse bunch, too! There are vampires, humans, and vampire hunters, of course, but there are also witches, werewolves, sirens, and countless other types of creatures.

The youngest of the Salvatore brothers, he is a vampire that was turned in the 18th century by a woman he had a romantic interest in. He enrolled himself in Mystic Falls High School in order to get closer to Elena Gilbert. He is the youngest of two vampiric brothers, and he has shared a love-hate relationship with his brother for centuries.

This is another one of the main characters of The Vampire Diaries, and the oldest of the Salvatore brothers. He was the main antagonist in the beginning. In the 18th century, he was turned into a vampire by a woman that he loved, and he ultimately led his younger brother into being turned as well. This character's striking resemblance to Elena Gilbert is not a coincidence. She's the most recent in a long line of Petrova doppelgängers. She was born in 1743 in Bulgaria. When she was 18, she gave birth to a child out of wedlock, which caused her father to disown her. She later convinced someone to turn her into a vampire in order to thwart the plans of an Original vampire who intended to sacrifice her. She held relationships with both Salvatore brothers.

If there is a name that sends shivers down the spines of most, it belongs to this character. He is a fearsome, infamous man with a history of violence and brutality. He is the Original hybrid, meaning that he is part werewolf and part vampire. The combination of the two creatures’ abilities makes him fiercely powerful. This lead to the two of them forming a bond with one another that eventually deepened into romantic love. Unfortunately, her lover fell into the Darkness, and their relationship came to an end. Believing him to be deceased, she moved to Alaska with her new husband, a pediatrician.

This character was roommates with Elena and one of her best friends at Whitmore College. Before his passing, she was a patient of Elena's father, a doctor, who used vampire blood to help her conquer an incurable disease. This disease was a rare heart condition which would have made her life expectancy incredibly short. She remained human, however, and lived to be a young adult. Unfortunately, she wound up losing her life at the hands of a former Augustine Vampire.

This character is the biological mother of Elena Gilbert. She became pregnant with her in high school and abandoned her a few days after giving birth, leaving her to be raised by her paternal uncle and his wife. Later, she met a man that she did not like very much at first, but she wound up becoming fond enough of him to get married. However, their relationship fell apart when she became so obsessed with the paranormal that she hunted down a vampire and requested that he turn her, abandoning her husband.

This character is the adoptive brother of Elena Gilbert, but biologically, he is her cousin. Before the series started, he lost his family in a tragic car accident. He couldn't deal with his grief and ended up turning to substance abuse as a way of coping with it. Because of this, he had a rather nasty reputation as a troublemaker. He was able to clean himself up after his first girlfriend passed away from what he believed to be an overdose.

This character was born in Bulgaria to a mother who was seventeen years old and unmarried, which resulted in her not being allowed to keep her baby. She is a vampire, but it is unknown which Original turned her in the first place. The reason that she turned herself was so that she could have more time to find her mother. She searched for her for 500 years, and eventually found her mother. Unfortunately, she found her just as she began to succumb to old age. The two of them hatched a plan to elongate her mother's life, which ultimately failed.

This character was the maternal aunt of Elena Gilbert and her younger brother. After their parents' tragic passings, she wound up taking responsibility for both of them by becoming their legal guardian. She dated a teacher from their high school, but their relationship became strained when she learned that his wife was actually still alive. She remained oblivious to the supernatural side of Mystic Falls until she was accosted by an Original vampire that was trying to inflict trauma upon Elena.

He was the first Augustine Vampire, which is a vampire that has been captured and had different experiments performed upon them by the Augustine Society. He was held captive from 1943 to 2011. When a woman that he initially held a somewhat combative relationship with saved him from being sucked into Oblivion, the two of them became friends, and eventually fell in love.

This character was inadvertently responsibile for turning Elena's doppelgänger into a vampire. The girl tricked her into feeding her the blood of a vampire and then took her own life, which resulted in her being turned. She was pursued for 500 years by the Original hybrid because the turning of the doppelgänger thwarted his plans to break his curse. She was saved by one of the Salvatore brothers and joined forces with them to defeat the Original hybrid. She had a tryst with one of them, and he ultimately took her life in order to save her from suffering after being bitten by a werewolf.

This character was a teacher at Mystic Falls High School when Elena was a student there. He taught a history class and took a special interest in Elena's younger brother, deciding to give him a fresh start, in spite of the former teacher's negative opinion of him. He met Elena's legal guardian and aunt, and the two of them had a romantic relationship with one another. Later, he learned that his wife had mothered a child when she was a teenager, which was Elena.

This character is a spunky werewolf that comes to Mystic Falls in order to help a certain werewolf-hybrid break his sire bond to the Original hybrid. His girlfriend wasn't very happy about her being there, and the two of them use the Original hybrid's speculation about the two of them hooking up to distract him from their plan to break his sire bonds. After a heated argument, she and the Original hybrid end up spending a night together that results in her becoming pregnant with the first tribrid.

This character is one of two twin girls. Along with her sister, she was believed to be deceased when her mother was attacked during her parents' wedding, but she was actually transferred into the womb of another woman. This task was completed by the Gemini Coven, in order to preserve the future of their coven. She and her sister are the first children to ever be successfully carried in the womb of a vampire. She considers the vampire that carried her to be her mother.

This character is the other of the two twin girls that were carried in the womb of a vampire. When her mother was attacked at her parents' wedding, she and her sister were each believed to be deceased, but the Gemini Coven stepped in, hoping to preserve the future of their coven. She and her sister were transferred to the womb of a vampire and carried to term. She considers the vampire who carried her to be her mother and was even featured in her wedding as a flower girl.

This character is a member of one of the Founding Families in Mystic Falls. He lived in Florida before his werewolf gene was triggered, and he met a girl named Kathy. He truly loved her, but she was only using him so that she could manipulate him into taking someone's life, and then use his werewolf powers in order to help her accomplish her goals. He moved back to Mystic Falls when his brother passed away in order to help take care of his nephew.

This character was a member of one of the Founding Families of Mystic Falls, and was an active part of the Founder's Council, working to hunt vampires. She was the sheriff of the town, as well as the mother of one of Elena's best friends. When her daughter became a vampire, she struggled to accept it. However, she eventually found a way to love her daughter in spite of her previous beliefs. Unfortunately, she lost her battle with cancer at the age of 41.

This character was born into a family of witches along with a total of seven other offspring, including his twin sister. However, it was discovered in his early years that he was a Siphoner, which caused his family to treat him poorly, claiming that he was an abomination. He was once trapped in the prison world, but he escaped using the blood of another witch. After his escape, his goal was to destroy his other siblings and perform a Merge with his twin sister.

This character was a witch. A siphoner, to be exact, meaning that she cannot generate magic of her own, and instead absorbs the magic of others. She was a member of the Gemini Coven, but she left because of her true nature. Upon being ejected from the coven, she met a vampire who offered to turn her into a hybrid and allow her into their group, called the Heretics. Here, she began a romantic relationship with another member, which carried on for nearly 130 years before both women sacrificed their lives to destroy the Phoenix Stone.

This character was a witch who was a member of the Gemini Coven until she was forced to leave for being a Siphoner. After leaving the coven, she was brought into the Heretics, a group of hybrid vampire-witches that was led by the mother of the Salvatore brothers. She was in a romantic relationship with another member of the Heretics, and the two of them were even engaged. Their relationship lasted over 130 years before they sacrificed themselves to destroy the Phoenix Stone.

A werewolf, this character enlisted her boyfriend to help her kidnap a Mystic Falls High School student in hopes of coaxing her boyfriend, a newly activated werewolf, into allowing them to help him. This was thwarted by the Salvatore brothers, who showed up to rescue her and eliminated several werewolves in the process, but ultimately had to be saved by the eldest Original vampire. She was the only person to escape from the Original vampire's attack, but she met her end at the hands of the Original hybrid as part of The Sacrifice.
