The musically inclined among us tend to take one of two paths towards trying to make it in what is a challenging industry. Inevitably, musicians will either try to chart a path to success as individual solo artists or as part of a larger group. Each path has its own appeal - spotlight seekers will surely go solo, while being part of a band resonates with those who wish to contribute to something greater. Being a lead singer, however, can offer the best of both worlds if you have the talent for it.
Within just about any band, there is little question of what the glamour role is. The lead singer is typically the most charismatic, dynamic and recognizable member of the ensemble, giving purpose to the 'frontman' moniker that often identifies them. It's why lead vocalist Marcus Mumford's surname adorns the title of his Mumford & Sons band, as does Dave Matthews within the Dave Matthews Band and Bruce Springsteen when he tours as part of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
Chances are, while you may not be familiar with every member of a famous music group, you probably know the guy or girl at the mic. Even while every band doesn't necessarily operate based on the structure of one lead singer and many bands have undergone personnel turnover over time, there usually remains one (or, on the odd occasion, two) focal presence closely identified with the group. In this quiz, we'll give you the band, but it's up to you to identify their famous leading voice - the person that helps create the group's collective persona.
