Pokémon is a series of video games, trading cards, anime, and other media that made its debut in Japan in 1996 when the very first video game was released for the Game Boy. The games are a role-playing style game in which the player takes on the role of a Pokémon trainer and explores the region in which the game is set. There, they battle other Pokémon trainers, catch wild Pokémon, and generally adventure and explore the world around them as they go through the story. The Pokémon games are one of the most popular video game series and have a total of 122 Pokémon games, including both the core series and the spin-off games that have been released in the series.

With each new game in the core series, a new generation of Pokémon makes its debut. Currently, there are seven generations of Pokémon and a grand total of 809 total creatures in the Pokémon series.
