Name As Many MCU Secondary Characters As Possible To Prove You're The Ultimate Marvel Fan

Infinity War is right around the corner, but are you truly ready? No, we don't just mean emotionally in case one of the main Avengers dies, but do you truly know the Marvel Cinematic Universe's main characters? Because if you don't, how are you going to go into Infinity War and actually be emotionally invested?

Let's use today to test your knowledge and see how much you care about the MCU, though you should keep some basic ground rules for this quiz in mind:

No Avengers or protagonists of The Defenders shows. So no Captain America, Daredevil, none of them. Main characters from other MCU shows are included, including supporting cast, family members, and so on.

There are characters from the TV shows, but only ones from the six Netflix shows (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher). Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Agent Carter are included only with characters who appeared in MCU movies.

We'll do our best not to spoil anything from any recent movies (mainly Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther) or Jessica Jones' second season, but anything else is fair game.

No primary antagonists, so no Loki, no Red Skull, no Kilgrave, etc. Secondary villains (we won't use him on here, but Davos from Iron Fist is a fair example) or primary villains who were created solely for their respective work are acceptable.

Question 1

S.H.I.E.L.D agent with serious charm

When this S.H.I.E.L.D agent first appeared in Iron Man, it was easy to think he was going to be another cliche, suspicious government agent who was up to no good. Who would have expected this longtime Captain America fan to instead be one of the nicer, more loyal non-superheros of the entire MCU? It's just too bad he was never able to get those mint edition Captain America cards signed by Steve Rogers when he had the chance. What was this agent's name?

Question 2

Where Stringer Bell went when he left the game

Obligatory Idris Elba, Stringer Bell, and The Wire joke, but we had to. As it turns out, Stringer didn't just leave the game, but he ascended to another plane of existence by working at Asgard under Odin and, eventually Thor. Stringer should have just been happy with the B&B condos and having all that legitimate money, me thinks. But getting work with the Norse gods is cool and a middle finger to Omar, so Stringer was probably happy. Who does Idris Elba play here?

Question 3

Cruelest lawyer in New York? Maybe, but she definitely wins her cases

What the Marvel Cinematic Universe deserves credit for, especially in the Netflix shows, is lending more of a human element to...well, the non-powered humans. This legendary attorney is cruel, selfish, and only cares about power, but she shows humanity when with her lovers and even with Jessica Jones when the latter is being her selfish, alienating self. This lawyer even calls Jessica out on that in season 2, helping the superpowered woman reconsider her actions. That's not a spoiler, by the way. Who is this?

Question 4

Still mourning Captain America all these years later

If you haven't immediately picked the answer, this British badass starred in Agent Carter, so her surname is clearly Carter. Saying too much here would spoil it and we don't want to spoil her show, but let's say this: Agent Carter is more awesome in The First Avenger than Black Widow is in The Avengers. Hot take alert, but Agent Carter is just so cool. Black Widow is too, but - oh wait, wee nearly said Agent Carter's real name in admiration. Go answer this.

Question 5

Tony Stark's father and the first true billionaire playboy

The relationship between Tony Stark and his father is more complicated than it really should be. I blame the original Iron Man for not writing ahead and clarifying how the two actually got along, but it's all good. The man behind S.H.I.E.L.D, the Manhattan Project, and all sorts of technological advancements, Tony's father is an American hero. It's just too bad that, as we later find out, the man was haunted by Captain America's supposed "death" in World War II. What's Mr. Stark's name?

Question 6

An average fighter, but a brilliant scientist!

Dragon Ball Z reference for the win! This guy probably isn't even close to being an average fighter, but he's pretty smart when it comes to science and math and all of that fun stuff that we really don't care about because we're journalists. We're not smart people by trade. This guy is smart, though, and we don't blame Loki for infiltrating his body (or something similar) to get what he wanted. What was the good doctor's actual name? No, it's not Loki.

Question 7

Looks like Earn made it out of Atlanta

We can't write about Donald Glover without having some type of Childish Gambino or Atlanta pun. Spider-Man, Spider-Man, all about them Spiders man. Can we get the Paper Boi remix in the next Spider-Man movie? I feel like Tom Holland would be exactly the guy to rap the type of music Paper Boi raps about and Earn tries to push in Atlanta. I'm serious! Spider-Man, Spider-Man, all about them Spiders man. What was Donald Glover's character in Spider-Man: Homecoming named?

Question 8

One of the hipsters who saved Thor

Hey, we use hipsters affectionately because we like hipsters. If you watched this character for the first time in Thor and were immediately reminded of Velma from Scooby Doo, don't be alarmed - that was exactly who the writers were trying to make her like, glasses and all. Next time you watch Thor leading up to Infinity War, we think you'll enjoy this character's presence just a bit more with that factoid in mind. Who is this sweet, charming hipster?

Question 9

Proof that Natalie Portman can act at a high-level

The Star Wars prequels don't lend many good memories about Natalie Portman's acting, especially when you realize her and Samuel L. Jackson are two of the most miscast actors in the entire trilogy. But when Portman followed Jackson to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she showed Star Wars fans that she could legitimately act as more than a clueless queen/senator who wanted to be with a man that killed kids. Which of the following characters was played by Ms. Portman in the Thor movies?

Question 10

He goes by General Ross, but his first name is...

The Incredible Hulk is one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's weaker movies, but to get William Hurt playing General Ross in an anti-hero form was a brilliant choice. And yes, we have no problem calling him General Ross here. It's his first name that you're going to need to get, so good luck with that. You shouldn't have any problems if you paid attention to a movie that somehow drags on despite it being shorter than two hours. At least Hulk is cool.

Question 11

Tony's friend and bodyguard is nicknamed...

There's alliteration with this character's nickname and his last name, but even the most casual MCU fan shouldn't have issues getting this one right. Like of all the characters on this quiz, this has to be among the top three or four easiest just because of how many MCU films he's been in. That doesn't mean we don't love him and his irritation with Spider-Man, we do, but you should have answered this by now and moved on. Why are you still reading this?

Question 12

Tony Stark's love interest and an awesome CEO

I say at another point in this quiz that another character from the Iron Man movies is among the easiest ones on this list. In large part because of Gwyneth Paltrow and also because of the role she plays in those movies, this femme fatale is up there with the easy ones too. Will we finally get the marriage betwen her and Tony in Infinity War, or will she be left heartbroken if he dies against Thanos? More importantly, answer this.

Question 13

Peter Parker's best friend, until Mary Jane comes along

Or M.J., whatever the MCU is doing with Peter Parker's love interest. Was anyone else surprised at how many fans took to this character? He's no Harry Osborne - and his actor isn't quite James Franco - but people really bought into this guy. In other words, we're going to see much more of him down the road and i'm not sure how to feel about that just yet. I do feel I know his name so I'm in good shape. Do you know him?

Question 14

Dr. Strange's assistant and good friend

I'm not going to bother touching anything regarding Dr. Strange because it is the most controversial Marvel movie and any sequels will continue to bug people. I will say that I am a fan of movies creating new content from the source material, that's all I have to say. Nothing about people saying Dr. Strange is an offensive comic, nothing about the casting choices. If you're smart, you'll just tell us who the character in the image is and move on.

Question 15

The MCU's most common target (besides New York)

I personally love this career criminal and was thrilled to see him return in Jessica Jones' second season, but I do feel bad that nearly all of the Defenders at this point have stopped him in such easy fashion. At least he got to have a nice moment with a Porsche in Jessica Jones. That's not a spoiler, it's us saying that the next time we see him, he'll probably be crying about the car being stolen. Who is this?

Question 16

Clarke Peters is being type-cast at this point

We mean this sarcastically, but come on. A grizzled city detective who enjoys antiques? Don't tell me Clarke Peters' character in Jessica Jones was not at all based on his character in HBO's The Wire. At least Peters still got to have some awesome moments in Jessica Jones, shortlived as his character unfortunately was. Agent Costa in season 2 isn't a bad character, but he's not Clarke Peters and he's not what this detective, in his brief time on the show, was.

Question 17

Maybe The Punisher's only friend left in this world

The Punisher having friends sounds like an oxymoron, but you can tell that a legitimate relationship between the two is forming as the season goes on. No, not that kind of relationship. People are already probably shipping Frank and this guy and I don't know how to feel about this. It was really good to see this former NSA agent get a happy ending when season one ended, although that means we're headed for hell in season two. Who is this?

Question 18

An ex-addict who became a successful private investigator

Season 2 of Jessica Jones is all about addiction. That's good in its own way. This ex-addict doesn't quite relapse the way fans thought he would, but he does wind up looking for things to fill the hole that drugs once filled. Some of you will wind up finding that poetic despite us not intending us to be poetic at all. Point is, if you haven't answered who this is by this point, you're in trouble. Go answer this already!

Question 19

He's not a lead villain, so we're cheating here

Fine, maybe it is cheating to include him, but he was hyped to be the main villain of Jessica Jones' second season and there really was no villain. Not that we didn't like that, mind you. We're just interested to see who will become Nuke, the character that this former police officer was based on. Will it be this guy? Will it be The Whizzer's mongoose? All important questions for season 3 in a few years, but go answer this.

Question 20

Agent Orange without the code name

Officially, he goes by Agent Orange. Unofficially, he's a sociopath who wants to destroy Frank Castle and what's left of his life after the man who later became The Punisher destroyed this man's eye. No, seriously. The Punisher as a show knew when to be brutal and gorey and the scene of this man being blinded after leading his men into an ambush overseas was just so perfect. See ya, Agent Orange. Codenames aside, what was this man's actual name?

Question 21

A Howling Commando forever

When people look at me like I'm crazy when I say The First Avenger is my second favorite Marvel movie behind The First Soldier, I have no problem using The Howling Commandos as an example of how good the movie is. We have these badass soldiers dominating HYDRA with these sci-fi weapons and there's no true obsessing about them or showcasing them to take away from the movie. We just see them kicking ass and taking names. Who was this Howling Commando?

Question 22

Luke Cage's mentor and a fantastic chess player

Technically, Pops was Luke Cage's mentor, but this chess player really tried to take care of Harlem's Hero - or at least, give him the best advice he could through the show's first season. We need much more of this character when season two comes out, even if the odds of him surviving the entire season are pretty slim in our eyes. Maybe we're being cynical, but there's a lot of people out for Luke's head. Who is this sagely old man?

Question 23

It's Patsy! What's her actual name?

I could put an actual description here, but this one should be pretty obvious to fans of Jessica Jones. If not, may I serenade you with a song? It's Patsy, it's Patsy! I really wanna be your friend! I hope this day will never end! It's Patsy, it's Patsy! That song is just so awesome and hearing it in season 2 was - wait, there's a new song. HEY YEAH, I WANT YOUR CRAY CRAY! I WANT YOUR CRAY CRAY! I WANT YOUR! We love you, Patsy. What's her real name?

Question 24

Danny Rand's love interest...for now

I say for now because something tells me that Danny and her are going to break up in season two. I wouldn't mind that because I personally want to see Danny with Joy Meachum, but there are people who like this martial arts instructor and ally of the Defenders. Many fans don't seem to think highly of her, but maybe she can do better things in Iron Fist's second season next year. We need to have hope when talking about the MCU! Who is this?

Question 25

The Kingpin's right-hand man

Vincent D'Onofrio Kingpin is fantastic, but it's his supporting characters who made him even cooler and more human in season one. We won't be seeing much of this guy anymore since Karen shot him dead multiple times, though. Too bad, because his smarmy "I'm better than you" attitude mixed with a compassion for the Kingpin that we hadn't seen in other works makes us hope he'll return in visions or flashbacks. Can you tell us who Wilson Fisk's right-hand man is?

Question 26

The agent out to get Frank Castle

I'm still confused about how this agent survived season one of Punisher, so she's definitely on the "likely to die" list in season two. Many others were confused as well, though we're going to avoid any conversations that fans had about her surviving because of the need for a female lead (Karen can fil that role perfectly) or because they want to see her hook up with Frank at some point. Yeah, no. Do you remember who this agent is?

Question 27

Decent cop, she just needs...another hand

Pun totally intended because if you'll remember, said hand - and arm - were sliced off in The Defenders. What's interesting is that this cop answered to Sonja Sohn in Luke Cage's first season, but Sohn would have been a perfect fit for this role. Maybe it's her playing a similar role in The WIre that led the casting agency to seek new blood? Then again, the sight of Sohn with one arm would be too sad for me to see. Who is this?

Question 28

How does everyone run into her?

Yep, you knew we had to include this Defenders ally on this quiz if we were serious. She was in the first four shows and The Defenders, but missed out on The Punisher (which made sense) and Jessica Jones' second season (which makes more sense if you take it as Jessica wanting to avoid everyone from The Defenders). She's smart, she's funny, and she's a hell of a nurse with a talent of finding super people. Who is this hero?

Question 29

A member of the Warriors Three

If Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons ever came to life, I think he'd love what this guy has done with his hair and beard. If The Simpsons ever rebrands a character or two, I'd love to see Jeff Albertson molded after this legendary Norse warrior, especially that badass beard. That right there is the sign of a true warrior, which makes sense given his place int he Warriors Three. Better than the knights who say Ni!, I guess. Who is this?

Question 30

Well, he DOES keep appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

This is so cheating, but the guy has appeared in everything Marvel Cinematic Universe related to this point (and will continue to, even as he gets older) and therefore is eligible for this quiz. There are tons of theories out there as to why he's in these movies and we're just glad even at his old age, he's able to appear for a few seconds and remind fans of who created this entire universe. You do know who this is, right?
