If You Remember My Best Friend's Wedding, You Were Definitely A '90s Girl

"My Best Friend's Wedding."  Hmmmm ...  Where to begin?  How to explain it?  Well ... there's her.  There's her best friend.  And there's his fiancé.  But it's taken her nearly 20 years to realize that she loves him; but he loves someone else now. What could possibly go wrong?  Everything.   Whew!  Is anyone else's head spinning yet?  'Cause there's also all the plotting and the scheming; but don't forget the mixed messages and the unintended consequences, too!  And that is the fantastic formula that makes this the sweet, little comedy that it is.  It has all that and more!  Obviously, there's gonna be pratfalls, pitfalls, and pranksters as well!  Oh, my!

Maybe it is just a new spin on a classic story, but what movie isn't?  It's got a great cast, hilarious musical numbers, and plot twists you never see coming!  But Julia Roberts was in three other movies in 1996; and a second one the same year as this one; and in 1999 she did two other great movies about weddings and romance.  Sheesh!  So are you sure you're ready to put your skills to the test?  With this quiz?  You might get confused.  You might start second-guessing yourself.  There's 40 questions and that means a lot of possible answers.  Some are right, some are wrong.  Truth is, there's only one way to find out; you better get started!

Question 1

Who stars in "My Best Friend's Wedding?"

Okay, so we'll start with an easy one (maybe they'll get harder, maybe they won't), casting. Come on. You don't even have to have seen the whole movie for this question. All you need is to remember the opening credits! Then again, there was that catchy, little ditty at the beginning. One could argue that it was a bit distracting ... but in a good way. Any decent movie has to start out with a hook of some kind. How else are they going to draw you in?

Question 2

What is Julianne's job?

Alright. From the opening credits to the opening scene; are you ready? It's not that bad. Really. Let's just approach it logically. Jules is off to help her best friend with his wedding (which happens in five days) at a moment's notice. Now, as far as we [the viewers] know, she didn't tell anyone what she was doing, or where she was going, or even when she'd be back. "Well, how does that help me," you ask. Perhaps it tells us that she's either self-employed or just foolish enough to blow off her job at the drop of a hat.

Question 3

Who is Julianne's best friend?

Come on now ... think, think, think. It's the name of the movie, for goodness sake. It's not a HUGE cast. but it's certainly big enough to provide you with alot of choices. After all, Julianne's best friend is kinda what you might refer to as the title character. So, it's not just important that you know the answer for the sake of this quiz; you pretty much need to know if want to be able to follow along with the movie, as well.

Question 4

Who plays her best friend?

No, there's nothing wrong with needing a bit more coaching. Your tentative, that's understandable; you're still just getting your feet wet. No problem. This question is almost like a part two of the one you just answered. One could say that questions 3 and 4 kind of go hand-in-hand. Why not? It is a movie about old friends and romance and weddings. Therefore, it also makes for a great double pun! So, don't be shy. Just take your best guess and move onto the next one if you're still not sure.

Question 5

Where did Jules and Michael first meet?

Perhaps to better understand why Jules has finally decided that she loves Michael and that (after all these years) he's THE ONE; we need to go back to the beginning. Where did they meet? What did he say to her? What did she say to him? Maybe he swept her off her feet right from the start! Then again, maybe he didn't. Why didn't it last? And, if it didn't last, how did they manage to stay friends all this time? That's alot of questions; but you only have to pick one answer.

Question 6

At what age (if they were still single) are they supposed to marry each other?

Yes, the questions are getting tougher. But that is the nature of a quiz, isn't it? If all the questions were easy and the answers all obvious, it wouldn't be much of a challenge to your movie mastery, now would it? So, why not just approach it rationally. What age do YOU think people should be married by? How old is too old? How late is too late? Or maybe you've made a pact like this one and are pretty sure you know the answer already. Then, by all means, take a guess.

Question 7

What happens to Julianne when she hears that Michael is getting married?

See, that's the problem with last-minute realizations; so often they're terribly ill-timed (and maybe a little desperate). Then again, it is only nine minutes into the movie; but it's kind of an important part of the plot exposition. So, does that help? Did that make it any easier? It's all coming back to you now, right? Right? Okay, maybe take it back to personal experience, then. If you were Jules, what would you're reaction have been? Are you a klutz, too? Maybe not. Maybe you have nerves of steel!

Question 8

What is Michael's fiance's name?

Yes. We're further along now. Almost all the primary players have been established, and you're about fifteen minutes in! It's good so far, don't you think? It's a cute movie. It makes you laugh. Plus, we're really starting to get a better idea of just how freaked out Julianne is about this whole thing. It really does move along at quite a rapid pace; and the bride-to-be has already gone way past invading personal space. If things get any more intense, she'll be bordering on psycho!

Question 9

Which baseball team does Kim's dad own?

Yes. Of course this is important information. The name of the baseball team is like a reference to the sport that's being played. The sport ties into Kim's father; which leads to a whole other aspect of the story line. You get the picture (pun intended), right? One could argue that her Dad doesn't actually have a great deal of screen time, yet he is a pertinent point to the plot. They don't just call them supporting characters for nothing, ya know.

Question 10

Where are Kim and Michael getting maried?

Ah. Things are progressing along quite nicely now, don't you think? This particular picture doesn't show up on the screen until about midway through the picture. However, the answer you're seeking was actually given way back near the beginning of the film. Feeling confused? Don't be. By this point, there's been ALOT of good laughs and maybe you've even figured out whose side you're on by now. Is it "sweet, chocolate-covered Kimmy," or totally deranged (but understandably so) Julianne? It's okay. You're doing fine. No one's judging.

Question 11

Can you name the actress that plays Kim?

That's right. There are some pretty big names cast in this movie. Then again, it was 1997, and a few of the stars were not yet the big names that they are today. But, hey, sometimes raw talent is the best kind of talent to work with. Whoever she is, she probably went on to do some really great stuff. Who knows? Maybe she's even won a few comedy or Blockbuster awards. That's the thing about fresh faces, you don't know much about them yet, or where they might take you!

Question 12

What does Kim ask Jules to do for her?

Oh, yeah. It's weird. You don't have to ask. It's not just you. Some woman you've never met before, whose name you barely know, and is marrying your best friend in less than five days- asks you to be her maid of honor?! Boom! Again, yeah ... that's way weird. What's the saying? The tension in here is so thick, you could cut it with a knife. But, oh man, does it make for some great comedy! Two women fighting over the same man!

Question 13

Can you name Julianne's editor?

Apparently, Jules has TWO men in her life. Thank goodness she's only interested in marrying one of them (we"ll get to the 'why' later). But the convenient aspect of all this is that, while her editor may not be her BEST friend, he IS a very close friend. A close friend who has shown up to try and help Jules sort through all her confusion and misplaced feelings of affection. After all, whatever the circumstance may be, everybody needs an objective opinion from time to time.

Question 14

While at the ballpark together, Michael claims that Jules can't dance. What is her response?

Sometimes we all do or say whatever we feel we have to in order to keep some sense of control of the situation. In other words, pretty much anything Michael throws at her, Julianne will find a snarky remark to rebut his accusations. Well, what else are you going to say to convince the groom-to-be that you're more worthy of his love and devotion than his fiance is? You try to reassure him that you've corrected all those faults he knows about; therefore you're everything he's been looking for.

Question 15

Where does Julianne take Michael and Kim to try and embarrass her?

So, you've made your defensive play. You've laid the foundation to persuade the groom that, not only are you a changed woman, but you're the better woman as well. Now it's time to play some offense. Time to start tearing down the competition. How? Discover her weaknesses and exploit them! Insert evil laugh here. Just how do you make the bride uncomfortable? Easy. Take her someplace a little dark and dingy, then make her do something she absolutely hates doing.

Question 16

Do you know the song that Kim sings?

Ummmm ... wow. Okay, so you didn't expect that your plan was going to backfire. Certainly not as much as it did. Maybe it's time to go back to the drawing board; perhaps rethink your strategy a bit. Because this was not what you wanted to happen at all! Like it wasn't bad enough that you failed to make her look bad: you only made her that much more charming in the process. Unfortunately, this may be one of those things that falls under the category of "epic fail."

Question 17

True or False: The crowd at the karaoke bar cheers Kim on.

Alright, alright ... skip the maybe. This was textbook "epic failure." Not only has she managed to appear even more delectable (without even trying) to Michael; now there's a chance she may even win over the booing crowd. What is a conniving best friend to do at this point? You can't change the song; you can't push her out of the spot light. It's almost like accidentally painting yourself into a corner ... but in a more romantic sense. Almost. But worse.

Question 18

What does Jules tell Kim she should convince Michael to do?

Okay, so you lost that round. Doesn't mean anything. The match is far from over at this point. You've gone back to your corner, caught your breath, and now it's time to come back out swingin'! Come up with another believable lie or another denial, and stun her before she even knows what's happening. Yeah, that's it! You just gotta remember to stick and move ... stick and move. Well, that- and hopefully she'll forget to bob and weave. Now you just gotta knock her to the canvas!

Question 19

Can you name the actor who plays Julianne's editor?

"Suddenly, the crowds part. And there he is; sleek, stylish, and radiant with charisma." Okay, that's all you get. Anymore clues and it'd just be cheating. Then again, no one could really put the blame on you for being so good at this. You just saw a great quiz and decided to try your luck. You didn't ask for any favors. It's not your fault that you've seen this particular movie enough times to have all the answers. You've put in just as much effort as the next person.

Question 20

What kind of a writer is Michael?

Poor Michael. Caught between the love of two women, and he doesn't even know it. One's been his best friend for years (though you wouldn't know it from her behavior), and the other one's the undisputed love of his life. One is underhanded and conniving; the other one loves him unconditionally and is just trying to hold onto him. One woman just wants to be happy, the other just wants him to be happy. One girl, he's nuts about, the other one's just acting nuts.

Question 21

What does Michael give Jules to hold onto for him?

It's almost like a show of good faith (on Michael's part) to the audience at this point. But it's also a clever way to communicate that Michael STILL has no idea of what treacherous things Julianne has been up to. This, of course, helps build the tension, but also suggests some of the remorse Jules may or may not be feeling at this point. Yes, it's another one of those scenes in a movie where we realize we're still not sure who to root for.

Question 22

What does Julianne tell Michael about her editor, George?

Hey, desperate times ... desperate measures. Then again, it may not be all that complex. It may just be panic. You know, spur of the moment. One of those times where you just kind of blurt out the first thing that comes to mind. Well, the first thing that comes to mind- that, hopefully, makes you all that much more desirable. 'Cause that's the endgame, right? Tear her down, build yourself up, and make him want you instead. Yeah, that's it.

Question 23

What is the song they sing at the rehearsel lunch?

No, it really isn't a musical. But it does have a great soundtrack. But not a great soundtrack like most movies. It has a great soundtrack with a couple of performances by some of the cast members (karaoke, or otherwise). But, as stated before, there's so much anxiety and uneasiness floating in the air, perhaps a brief musical number is just what's called for. After all, you are half way through the movie at this point. Maybe it's not so much a musical number, as it is a brief interlude.

Question 24

Julianne's editor, George, is gay.

"He comes toward you; the moves of a jungle cat. You think, ' ... what the hell, life goes on.' Maybe there won't be marriage. Maybe there won't be sex. But by God, there'll be dancing." Okay, they're smooth lines. But he's a smooth guy. Not to mention he does have a great singing voice. And, the man does know how to dress. However, you're the one taking the quiz; so the assumptions are all up to you. How hard can it be? There's only two possible answers.

Question 25

What color is Julianne's hair?

Very nice. Question 25 and you're still going strong. Yes, that's why this one is an easy one. You've come this far, you've earned a little break. It's been pretty interesting, wouldn't you say? Boy calls girl. Boy asks girl to come to wedding. Girl realizes she loves boy and needs to stop the wedding. Now boy's other girl shows up and wants first girl to be IN the wedding. Girl panics. Girl makes bad decisions and does freaky, crazy things. Boy doesn't notice, so girl cranks it up a notch. Now we're all caught up.

Question 26

What is Julianne's and Michael's song?

Deception is one thing. Love is another. But history is real, too. Sure, Jules may be playing dirty with every hand she's dealt, but there are some real, some sincere moments here and there. Michael may not know exactly where Julianne's feelings lie or for whom, but he does know that they've been friends for a long time. And if there's anyone he can talk to about how he's feeling, it's definitely his best friend, Jules. At least he thinks he knows.

Question 27

Who does Jules write a fake email to?

Just when you thought things couldn't get any uglier, Julianne pulls this little gem out of her pocket. Well ... out of her pocket and onto someone else's laptop. The karaoke didn't work, her "all new moves" have yet to be seen, and the movie is basically 2/3 of the way over. Perhaps that's why she felt the need to reach deep down into her bag of nasty tricks and pull this little caper. If you'll remember, even she's a little hesitant about this dirty deed.

Question 28

Who played, "Richard," the bellboy ... on the non-smoking floor?

Perhaps, just perhaps Jules is actually starting to feel the weight of her own guilt. After all, she had five days to try and stop the wedding from happening; but things are really getting down to the last minute and she's not really made much progress. So, who needs a cigarette?! Problem is, she's in a hotel ... on a non-smoking floor. But, hey, everybody breaks the rules now and then. Only not everybody gets caught red-handed by, Richard, the bellboy.

Question 29

What happens to Kim's wedding ring?

He only had one job for her. Only one thing she had to take care of. Of course, that's not counting the burden Kim put on her as far as becoming her maid of honor. But THIS is Kimmy's ring were talking about. It's not always the offensive play that has the potential to get us into trouble, sometimes it's the jealousy. And once that jealousy takes over, it's that ugly, green tinge that seriously begins to cloud our otherwise 20/20 vision. Right?

Question 30

True or False: Julianne is a smoker.

The pressure builds, things DEFINITELY are not going as planned, and there doesn't seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel after all. The wedding's getting closer, the tension is near unbearable ... so you've got to figure out a way to release that pressure before it explodes; or at least before it explodes in your face. You've got your vice and you know it works, so why fight it? Why deny yourself? Besides, not only will it help calm your nerves, maybe it'll help you refocus as well.

Question 31

What does Michael do when he thinks that the email is real?

The proverbial "stuff" is really starting to hit the proverbial "fan." Oddly enough, this is exactly what Julianne wanted, she just didn't think about how heavily it was all going to weigh on her. And she didn't think about just how heart-wrenching this would be for Kimmy. All of these factors and strain are starting to rain down on her; and she's starting to have second thoughts about whether or not she can actually go through with it all. Turns out ... there's alot more collateral damage than she'd expected.

Question 32

Where does Julianne finally tell Michael that he should marry her instead of Kim?

Well, this is it. Once she crosses this line, there's no going back. Then again, things are down to the wire. It's breakfast on the DAY of THE WEDDING! So, if she's gonna do it, she needs to do it now. Because- what if Michael changes his mind? What if he finds it in his heart to forgive Kim and they decide to go ahead and get married after all? What then? Too late is too late! What is a deceitful best friend to do?!

Question 33

Who is Jell-O?

Alright. Now you just need to convince the bride-to-be why Michael doesn't want to marry her after all and how she'll be so much better off without him. How does one go about something like that? Should you just be blunt, like a hard slap to the face? Or do you try and let her down easy. After all, she's just had her heart broken, do you really need to rub salt on the wound as well? Maybe you try a more creative approach ... like a food metaphor!

Question 34

Who is Creme Brulee?

Yes! Break someone's heart with a food metaphor! Now, maybe it was planned that way. Maybe it wasn't. There aren't a whole lot of people out there walking around, associating Jell-O and creme brulee with their romantic relationships. But not only is she about to tell Kimmy that she's just not what Michael wants in a bride; she's also going to explain to her why Michael will be happier with her instead. Funny, with all this pertinent information flying around, there doesn't seem much poise or finesse in it anywhere.

Question 35

In this climactic scene, Michael is chasing Kim; Julianne is chasing Michael; but who's chasing Julianne?

Woooops! Now it's out there; and there's no taking it back. The words have been spoken and we all know that once that's done, you can't take them back. Maybe one of the reasons we know we can't possibly take back our words (especially hurtful ones), is because we're too busy trying to get our foot out of our mouth, instead. It can be truly sad and truly disappointing when people realize just how damaging the things they wanted to say to other people can be.

Question 36

Where are Jules and Michael when she finally fesses up to writing the fake email?

Man, oh, man ... the whole thing- the self discovery, the revelation, the desperation, the plotting and scheming, the hoping and praying (desperately), and the execution of it all ... has just gone completely and utterly wrong. Not one thing worked out the way it was supposed to. Poor Kimmy is devastated (and has disappeared), Michael now knows that it was all a lie; and because of it, he may have lost the one woman he truly loves. And it's all through no fault of his own.

Question 37

Where had Michael proposed to Kim?

Amazingly, unbelievably ... Michael has somehow found it in his heart to forgive Jules. Somehow. And he tells her the sweet, winsome story of how he proposed to Kimmy. Julianne finally decides that the only thing left for her to do is the right thing. And in order to pull that off, she's got to rally Michael, find Kim, beat the odds, and do it all in a matter of hours. Maybe it can be done. Just maybe. That's the magic of movies, right?!

Question 38

Where does Jules finally find Kim?

Confrontation time! Cat fight! Ohhhh ... things are really getting heated now! Not only did Julianne finally find Kimmy, now she has to stand there and face off with her, knowing that what she did was WAY wrong! Knowing she has to what must be done (no matter how painful it may be), Jules forces Kim into a showdown and takes her licks. Not to mention that all this happens while every woman in the restroom looks on with sadistic curiosity.

Question 39

What is Julianne's wedding gift to Kim and Michael?

The ride is over. All the thrills, chills, and spills came and went. But, just as we'd all hoped (probably), Michael and Kimmy still ended up together and still ended up happy. In all honesty, Jules still may not be convinced that Michael ended up with the "right" girl ... but at least he ended up with the girl he knew was right for him. In the end Julianne at least has the closure of knowing that Michael knows how she feels about him.

Question 40

In the end, who inevitably shows up at the reception to comfort Jules?

Well, that's it. It's all over. "My Best Friend's Wedding," all summed up into a neat, little 40-question quiz. How do you think you did? Did you remember the movie as well as you thought you would? What's that? What happened to poor, little Julianne? Let's just put it this way: " ... suddenly, a familiar song. And you're off your chair in one, exquisite movement; wondering searching, sniffing the wind like a dapple deer. Has God heard your little prayer? Will Cinderella dance again?"
