Only A Real Gamer Can Match The Weapon To The Video Game Character

Think of all the aspects that make a great video game, regardless of the genre. You have your hero, and with every hero a villain, and of course the many different friends and enemies that you meet along your journey. Even with all of these elements taken into account, there's something very important that's being left out: the weapons!

When video games first hit the public market, they were incredibly simple. If you were lucky enough, the protagonist might have a name, but beyond that the entire focus was on the gameplay, which was presented by the primitive sprites on screen. Today, games have become advanced enough to include actual stories and more developed characters, making way for much more in-game detail.

Think about some of your favorite video game characters, and just how different things would be if they didn't have their signature weapon. Think of some of the baddest villains, and just how much more intimidating they are because of some giant sword, or incredibly overpowered mech suit that they happen to use. Without weapons, many video games just couldn't have worked at all. So if you're a real gamer, then surely you can match these video game weapons to the correct characters, right?

Question 1

Portal Gun

Portal Gun

When trying to decide which video game weapon is better than all the rest, it's obviously a completely subjective matter. That being said, it's hard to imagine a top ten list that didn't include the Portal Gun. What exactly does the Portal Gun do? Well it creates portals. Or more specifically, it allows the user to travel between wherever the two portals are placed using the gun. If you're clever enough, then the possibilities with a weapon like this are endless.

Question 2

Whip

Imagine that you're that type of person who deals with the supernatural on a daily basis. Maybe it's a hoard of zombies, or perhaps vampire bats. Question 3

Fat Man

Fat-Man-from-Fallout

War is an ugly, and very tragic thing. And when you bring nuclear weapons into the picture, it just multiples everything bad about war to an incredible degree. That being said, we have to admit that they idea of using a weapon that launches mini-nukes is too good to pass up. Well, that's exactly what the Fat Man is able to do. They say not to bring a knife to a gunfight, but perhaps the saying should be "don't bring a gun to a nuke fight".

Question 4

Golden Gun

Golden Gun

The Nintendo 64 was not only Nintendo's first ever fully 3D console, but it was also where many young gamers played their first ever FPS games. Games like Super Mario and Donkey Kong will always be fun, but it almost felt like part of growing up when you started playing games that tackled more mature themes such as these. One in particular happened to star a certain secret agent, and if you played your cards right, you'd be able to use the best gun in the game, the Golden Gun.

Question 5

Master Sword

2-Master-Sword-art

When it comes to weapons in video games, nothing quite comes close to that classic melee weapon: the sword. Usually seen in games belonging to the fantasy genre, swords are often a dime a dozen, but once in a while there comes one that truly stands out. For instance, the Master Sword is one of the most recognizable swords in video game history. Also known as "The Blade of Evil's Bane", can you remember who is known for wielding this weapon?

Question 6

Energy Sword

Halo Energy Sword

People will often say that the best offense is a good defense. But apparently whoever said that have never used one of these energy swords. The game in which they are featured in gives players and enemies alike an energy shield, which protects them from any initial attacks that may be inflicted upon them. The Energy Sword however doesn't care about any silly shields, and actually tears right through the energy barrier, striking enemies directly as if they had no exterior protection anyway.

Question 7

Mega Buster

It's funny how game cover art can be misleading at times, and the same could be the said for the names of weapons. Take for instance, the "Mega Buster", it sounds like it might be one of the more powerful weapons in the game that it belongs to, but it's actually quite the opposite. The Mega Buster is actually the default weapon in pretty much every single game that its featured in. Nicknamed but some fans as the "lemon shooter", who uses it?

Question 8

Keyblade

Sometimes at first glance, something that seems like some miscellaneous object actually ends up being one of the most important weapons in a game. Take the Keyblade for instance. Whatever your stance happens to be on it, can you name who happens to wield it?

Question 9

Soul Edge

On a rare occasion, the main antagonist of a series also happens to be a weapon commonly used in it as well. Well, maybe a little more than just rare, because the only example we can actually think of is Soul Edge. This may seem a bit like a trick question at first, as many different characters have wielded pieces of Soul Edge over the course of several games, but only one character has used it more than any other.

Question 10

Omniwrench

Omniwrench

Sometimes, some of the best weapons start of without the intention of them even being used for offensive purposes. The Omniwrench is a tool used by a young mechanic, who originally used the Omniwrench as an all-in-one mechanic tool. Yup, as it turns out, getting hit by a wrench hurts.

Question 11

BFG

We're actually lucky that this weapon is more known for its acronym than its real name, or else we might not have been able to add it to this list of questions. The BFG, described in its original game manual as the "Big, Uh... Freakin' Gun", is easily the most powerful weapon in the game that it made its debut in, with the capability of firing green plasma shots of incredible power towards enemies. Who is the lucky soldier that gets to use this overpowered gun?

Question 12

Crowbar

Half-Life Crowbar

Yes, you're reading that right, we're not talking about some ultra-powered alien gun used by a space marine, or some kind of ancient weapon imbued with magic, just your average, everyday crowbar. What makes this is even more amusing, and perhaps a bit ironic, is that the person who often uses this brutish weapon is actually well-known for their intelligence in the series that they belong to. It's good for breaking crates, and good for killing enemies, but who uses this weapon?

Question 13

Hammer

One of the most interesting (but often dangerous) things that can happen to a video game series, is when it steps into a different genre for one of its spinoff titles. Yo-yo

Yo-yos

Super Smash Bros. has such an eclectic range of fighters, spanning many different eras of video gaming, that it would only make sense that it would contain many different types of weapons as well. From generic items that anyone can use like the Home-Run Bat, to character-specific ones like Snake's various artillery, you have many choices to beat down your opponents. One character in particular happens to use something that you especially wouldn't expect to find on the battlefield, a Yo-yo. Who uses this unorthodox weapon?

Question 15

Holy Hand Grenade

Monty Python Holy Hand Grenade

If you're going to make a game focused on chaotic war between a bunch of small soldiers, then why not have some fun with the different types of artillery included? Sure you can use your standard missiles and bullet-based weapons, but why not use something with a little more divine power? A direct reference to "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", this all-out war game features an explosive known as the Holy Hand Grenade, which is just as powerful as it sounds.

Question 16

Shrink Ray

Why simply destroy or incapacitate your enemy, when you can outright humiliate them? That's apparently what this developer was thinking of when they decided to add the "Shrink Ray" as one of the available weapons. Where most weapons would inflict a certain amount of damage to enemies, the Shrink Ray actually doesn't do any direct damage. Instead (as the name would suggest) it shrinks enemies to a fraction of their regular size, allowing you to stomp them, which is an insta-kill.

Question 17

Blades of Chaos

As the saying goes, "no pain, no gain." What does that have to do with a set of powerful, ancient weapons known as the "Blades of Chaos"? Well, the blades are only given to someone who has pledged their life to Ares, the God of War. The weapons themselves are quite powerful, able to ignite enemies in fire with every slash and swing. The only drawback, is that these ancient blades are seared into the forearms of the wielder. Ouch.

Question 18

Buster Sword

The cool thing about video game physics, is that they don't exactly have to make sense. If you're a small kid who doesn't have much muscle to show, don't worry, you'll be able to carry giant swords that are as big as you are, no problem! If you don't believe us, then just as the wielder of the Buster Sword. Oh, and if you thought about pawning it, tough luck, this is one of those weapons that are impossible to sell or get rid of.

The protagonist of this game happens to find himself inside of a zombie-infested mall. Instead of just panicking and getting himself eaten, he takes the smart route, and uses every single item around him to fend off the flesh-eating baddies. It just goes to show, you shouldn't underestimate someone who's covered wars.

Question 20

Fire Flower

Super Mario Fire Flower

Super Smash Bros. was an incredibly revolutionary game when it first came out. Not only did it basically invent a new fighting game sub-genre, but it brought together all of the most famous video game characters in a grand fashion that no one had ever seen before. The many weapons used in-game originate from the different games of the Nintendo characters featured in its roster, of which there's so many it can be hard to keep track. Who original used the fire flower weapon as a power-up?

Question 21

His Head

Street Fighter 5 Headbutt

Think about how many heroic characters would be completely screwed if they didn't have any weapon, or magical ability, during their quest against evil. Well guess what? Here's a guy who can fight off baddies without any of that. Instead of relying on super-powered guns, or weapons blessed from ancient gods, he gets the job done by simply using his head - literally. This brutish warrior actually uses his head as his weapon, effectively headbutting any enemy that stands in his way.

Question 22

Rope/Chain Spear

Mortal Kombat Scorpion Spear

It's funny how an object that seems pretty boring and generic on its own, can turn iconic when used by a specific character (and a certain phrase uttered in the process). A spear by itself can be an effective weapon in battle, but only with a rope (or chain) spear can you hit an enemy from an extremely long range, and then pull him towards you so you can inflict even more damage upon them. Still need a hint? Get outta here.

Question 23

Fire Breath

One of the coolest types of attacks that you could ever hope to have in your arsenal, is the ability to spout fire at your opponents. Just think about it, getting hit with a huge fireball is already bound to cause a great deal of damage in itself, but the potential of setting them on fire makes it even better. Mastery over any of the different elements is a powerful skill, but there's something about fire in particular that makes it really intimidating.

Question 24

Plasma Blaster

Earthworm Jim Plasma Blaster

We've discussed all kinds of crazy futuristic weapons that are powerful enough to make an alien think twice about invading your planet, but let's get back to basics for a moment. What we have here, is something simply called a "Plasma Blaster". It's a pretty basic weapon by itself, it fires small blasts of energy that deal a fair amount of damage, and can refill itself overtime. What makes this more interesting is that it's actually just one feature of the Super Suit that the character using it wears.
