While we may not have gotten a female president in the United States of America, we can certainly still dream of it as Veep demonstrates. On top of that, more TV shows and movies in general are either featuring proactive female protagonists or have strong female characters in general. Gone are the days when women just sat around waiting to be rescued by a man or had little to no personality (though that depiction does continue in some form through films like Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey). But more increasingly in the mainstream culture, we’re seeing women leading their own shows and being the driving force in a movie as opposed to the male leads. However, some female protagonists stand out more than others and sometimes when Hollywood movies attempt to be more ‘feminist’ it doesn’t always work.

Then there are films like the Ghostbusters remake which was certainly a step in the right direction but it wasn’t good enough to overcome the unfortunately loud and overbearing amount of sexism that still persists to this day, though most people don’t want to admit it.
