Match The TV Spoiler To The TV Show

Huge plot twists, surprise reveals, moments that make the audience gasp in shock, horror, and often a little bit of glee... these are the best part of watching a TV series week to week, and talking them over with other fans is always the first stop when the credits have rolled. However, for those fans who aren't up to date, these incredible moments can be totally ruined if they can't dodge those dreaded spoilers.

The misery of having the next big plot twist given away ahead of time is one of the biggest downsides to online fandoms, especially if you don't have the time to keep up with every series as it airs. Even being one week behind can mean some online contortions to make sure that you get to watch the next big twist with just as much gleeful shock as everybody else.

Some spoilers are little, and may be forgotten in a few episodes time, but other twists are so huge that we are still reeling from them weeks or even years after they've dropped. These are the big guns, the ones that any new viewer of a show is going to want to avoid, and that past audience can identify from just a brief description of what unexpected thing happened... at least, devoted TV fans will be able to! Can you decode the TV shows that these spoilers come from? Take our quiz to find out, and be warned... SPOILER ALERT!

Question 1

Ned loses his head

This show is one that has been loaded with spoilers throughout, especially as it loves to kill off fan favorite characters. In fact, it has become so well known for it that fans watch on the edge of their seats, expecting the biggest names to pop their clogs any second! Back in season one, however, we weren't prepared for how casually and brutally this series would behead the lead character (or the lead at the time). When Ned lost his head, the fandom lost theirs, too.

Question 2

Zoe Takes A Dive

By now, this show has moved on from the shocking death in the second season, but at the time the loss of Zoe was absolutely huge. This journalist from Washington DC learned the hard way that trying to uncover the truth can come with a price, as her investigation into the death of Peter Russo ends in her own death. Zoe was lured to her doom in a train station, where Frank contrived to shove her into the path of a moving train, and end her investigation once and for all.

Question 3

Who Shot Mr Burns?

This was such a spoiler that it even became the title of the two-part episode that had the world talking about this long-running animated series. The first part ended with the villainous Mr Burns being shot, and in typical murder-mystery fashion, pretty much everyone in town at the time had a motive to do it. The real culprit was revealed in the second part... to be a baby, who accidentally (wink wink) shot the old man while he was trying to literally take candy from a baby.

Question 4

Walter Doesn't Die Of Cancer

From the very first episodes of this show, it was a given that the main character was going to die. Walter had cancer, and it was incurable, and the events of the show were the result of this diagnosis - and his desire to make as much money as possible before the end. The true twist, however, was that when this lead character actually did die, it wasn't the cancer that took him - instead, he sacrificed himself to save Jesse.

Question 5

Mary Comes Back From The Dead

Mary Winchester Supernatural

Most of the biggest spoilers on TV are because beloved characters die, but this one shocked everyone by bringing a long-dead character back to life. Mary was killed in the series premiere, and her death had major ramifications for multiple seasons... but no one expected her to return. However, after one of Mary's sons managed to reunite God with his long-lost sister, his greatest wish was granted as a reward - and it turns out, God's sister knew that all he wanted was his mother to come back to him.

Question 6

She got off the plane

Since the earliest episodes of this sitcom, these two main characters have had an on-again, off-again relationship. They've dated and broken up (because they were on a break), and dated and broken up again, until the final season, when the two had a baby together but were still not admitting their feelings for each other. It wasn't until the finale that fans finally discovered if they ended up together or not, as she got off the plane to Paris to come back home to her lobster.

Question 7

The identity of the wife

This sitcom came with an interesting premise, that the entire show was made up of stories told by the lead character to his children, years after they actually happened, and all leading up to the story of his first meeting with their mom. The question of who she was wasn't answered until the final episodes, when fans discovered exactly who this mystery woman was - and became outraged when she was almost immediately killed off, and the narrator decided to win back his original love in the final moments.

Question 8

The Red Wedding

This was a truly impressive scene, because not only is it chock full of spoilers for TV viewers, but it also changed some major points from the books that the series is based on - meaning it was just as spoilery, even for fans who had read the novels! This 'wedding' ended in bloodshed, when The Rains of Castamere played, and the Freys massacre the Stark family as revenge for Robb's refusal to marry one of Lord Frey's daughters as he originally agreed.

Question 9

The final four words

When this popular series from the '00s got a revival, fans couldn't wait to find out where their favorite characters wound up, all these years later. What no one expected was the major twist at the end of the revival - when Rory told her mother that she was pregnant. And just like her mother, Rory was pregnant without being married - or even in a really stable relationship. This was such a cliffhanger that fans have even wondered if it means that there are more seasons to come...

Question 10

The island is purgatory

This series came with a huge number of questions, right from the start - and they weren't all answered in a truly satisfactory way, even by the very end of the finale. The biggest twist (and one that goes a long way to explaining most of the weirdness throughout the series), however, was that the island (or one version of the island, anyway) is actually purgatory, where the characters are figuring out their deepest issues before moving on to the afterlife proper.

Question 11

R Plus L Equals J

No, it's not a really, really, strange type of math, but the confirmation of long-held fan theories that confirmed that two of the biggest characters in this show are actually related. Thanks to a secret marriage between a Queen's brother and a Warrior's mother, the two are actually (unknowingly) aunt and nephew. That's shocking enough on its own, but this spoiler gets even bigger with the reveal that (not knowing their connection) the two now have a sexual relationship. Gasp!

Question 12

Sophia Was In The Barn

Some spoilers build up over a single episode, but most of them hit after weeks of build up - which is what happened with this show. After Sophia went missing, the entire core group of characters dedicated weeks to finding her. Taking refuge at a farm, they search the woods surrounding it for the young girl, gradually losing hope that she will be found alive... until they discover that the farm owner, Herschel, was actually keeping her in the barn the entire time.

Question 13

The Ultimate Gender Reveal

This series about a ruthless blogger revealing the deepest, darkest secrets of teens on the upper east side came with one final twist - that the one behind it all wasn't one of the girls, but a guy! Dan revealed himself to be the one spreading all the rumors and secrets, all part of a devious plan to become part of the action. This was especially surprising given that before the finale, Dan wasn't shown to be much of a manipulator at all!

Question 14

Who Killed Jason Blossom?

The entire first season of this series was a murder mystery, centered around the death of Jason Blossom. Eventually, we learned that the real killer of this young man was his father, Clifford, after Jason found out about his drug dealing. However, this wasn't the only spoiler that emerged over the course of the first season. This entire series is filled with spoiler-y moments, as the inhabitants of a small town have their darkest secrets brought to light, one by one.

Question 15

A Christmas Special Car Crash

This may not be a series that viewers expected a lot of death and spoiler-y goodness from at the start, but it certainly went that way over time. This period drama even went so far as to kill off a major character during the Christmas Special, only moments after he met his newborn son for the first time. Matthew died in a car crash, made all the more shocking because it was a classic bait-and-switch; the show seemed to be building up to the death of his wife in childbirth, but she survived.

Question 16

Jax Is Hit By A Truck

Another main character bites the dust in this one, although at least they waited for the series finale to kill off everyone's favorite biker. Plenty of other characters bit the dust over the course of the show, but it was Jax Teller's loss that really hit fans hard, especially because he decided to go out with a bang. Jax ended up in a high-speed chase on the highway, and decides to take his ending into his own hands by driving his bike straight into a truck in a fatal collision.

Question 17

The Dragon Dies

It's not just human deaths that shock fans - the deaths of creatures can also be heartbreaking (and sometimes, even more so than the human losses!). In this series, fans know to get used to their favorite people getting killed off, but no one expected to see one of the three dragons losing their life to an exceptionally talented spear-throwing White Walker. Now, of course, this dragon has been turned, and is going to come back to attack the mother that left him behind in the frozen North.

Question 18

She Sacrifices Herself To Save Her Sister

It takes a lot to kill off a main character in a series, and even if they eventually return from the dead, the first big death is always a shocker. This one came at the end of the fifth season, which introduced a new sister to the core group - with no explanation at all! Fans were confused at first, until they learned that the new character, Dawn, was actually a mystical artifact, and that the titular character would end up dying to save her in the season finale.

Question 19

Who Shot JR?

This spoiler came long before the days of social media and a constant online barrage of memes and posts the day after the episode aired... but it's still one of the biggest spoilers in TV history - and so huge that The Simpsons even created their own parody of the cliffhanger episode! This straightforward whodunnit eventually revealed that it was JR's sister in law and mistress who pulled the trigger, but it took a whopping four episodes to get to that reveal.

Question 20

Fan Favorite crushed to death

There's a lot of violence in this show, but there aren't many deaths... which is part of the reason that this one was so shocking. Poussey was killed during an already tense situation, when she was knocked down and kneeled on by an officer, and he accidentally crushed her to death. With Poussey being such a peaceable character overall, it was all the more surprising that she would meet such a violent end - and her death set up the entire next season of the series.

Question 21

The Architect Was Lying All Along

One of the best things about this spoiler is that it challenges not just the day to day interactions of the characters, but the entire universe in which they take place... and it takes Eleanor almost the entire first season to realize that the kindly Architect, Michael, has been lying to her all along. Nothing is real! They aren't where they think they are, their problems aren't what they think they are, their neighbors aren't what they think they are either. It's all been one giant lie.

Question 22

Savitar Is The Hero In Disguise

There's something classic about the big bad turning out to be the hero in disguise, and this show has now done multiple variations on this single twist - but one of the biggest was the revelation that Savitar, the big-bad of season 3, wasn't the current hero in disguise, but a future version of the hero, warped into an evil villain. It's a spoiler that kept fans guessing about who this hero would be going up against for most of a season before the big reveal.

Question 23

I'm Your Daughter!!

This Netflix original series was packed with drama, twists and turns as the cast figured out how to work together as a real team. The biggest twist of the show, however, was when Justine revealed that she doesn't have a crush on Sam, but that she is his daughter. The collective gasp at this revelation is enhanced by the moment that she chooses to reveal herself to him - after he gets high and hits on her at a party.

Question 24

Ward Is A Double Agent

Double agents always make for great, spoiler-y reveals... especially when the agent in question has become of the organizations most trusted men. Grant Ward was one such undercover bad guy, practically the right hand man of Agent Coulson, and sleeping with a fellow agent, the legendary Agent May. Despite all these connections, however, Ward eventually revealed that he was working for the enemy - and willing to kill his fellow agents, who thought that he was a friend all along.

Question 25

Glenn Gets Beaten To Death

Talk about a mid-season cliffhanger! This series is known for killing off everyone that the fans learn to love, so no one was too shocked when a recent season finale ended on a 'who dies' cliffhanger. One of the big bads, Negan, grabs his baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire, and is swinging it menacingly at the heroes of the scene in the season finale... and when this show returns, it is to see Glenn getting his head bashed in (in an extremely graphic way).
