Match The NHL Team To The City They Play In

"I love those hockey moms. You know what they say the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is? Lipstick." - Sarah Palin.

Whether or not you agree with Palin's politics, you have to admit it's a funny line. Hockey parents and players are fierce, dedicated people who love the sport and for that, we heavily respect them. As of 2018, 30 cities get to enjoy 31 NHL teams and what they bring to the table. Not even lockouts can stop hockey fans from doing what they do best: suiting up, throwing hats onto the field, and going viral for fan interactions.

Today, you're going to tell us which city has which team. We'll give you the name of a city (i.e. Miami, which does not have a hockey team but fits the example) and you'll have four potential answers, which would be the team names (sticking with the Miami example, let's use Fish, Hurricanes, Marlins, and Oceanic). One of those answers is obviously correct, so get this right.

Because there are teams who just use the state names, we'll put the true host city in parentheses. If the non-existent Miami team was called the Florida Fish, we'd title the question as Florida (Miami). Good luck with this quiz!

Question 1

Anaheim

You can catch a baseball game and go to Disney World if you stop in Anaheim to see this hockey team, which has been a constant Stanley Cup contender in recent years and made the Western Conference Finals last season. Nearly all of the attention will go to Mike Trout, Shoehei Ohtani, and the baseball team that plays at what many call the Big A, but show this hockey team some love and try to start this quiz off right.

Question 2

Arizona (Glendale)

As we said in the intro, any team which has a state name but is based in a separate city will have the true name first with the team's actual location second. So while this team has Arizona at the start of their name, they're based in Glendale and we've included a picture of Glendale. That's the fun of sports, where you can technically be located in another state and be called a different state, like the New York Jets and Giants (New Jersey) do.

Question 3

Boston

Our first alliterative name on this list comes in the form of Boston and a team which starts with the letter "b." Sports in Boston have a complicated recent history, with success by all four professional teams also being marred in controversies for alleged cheating (Deflategate), racism by fans (Red Sox and this team are guilty), and failing to truly take advantage of the Brooklyn Nets trade with the exception of landing Kyrie Irving much later. Way to go, Celtics. What's the answer here?

Question 4

Buffalo

We can certainly tell you the answer here isn't the Buffalo Bills, although they are owned by the same people and share some executives, believe it or not. That can be found in some sports where two teams - almost always basketball and hockey - share an arena and have partial ownership stakes by the same people, but you don't care about that. You care more about a city which may be fielding both a winning football and hockey team for the first time in forever. In a couple years, at least.

Question 5

Calgary

We're headed back to Canada, the true home of hockey. Calgary is technically in Alberta, which I have to mention because Canada has many different provinces and people are prideful of where they live for good reason. So, this is Calgary, home of this hockey team which has missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs seven times in the past nine seasons. Things are going to have to change soon, especially with the Western Conference getting tougher each year. Who's the team?

Question 6

Carolina (Raleigh)

Fun fact: I originally had Carolina down the list because I forgot about our "gimmick" of using the team's true name - in this case, the state - and putting the city's name in parenthesis. That's just a look behind the scenes at what happens here at TheQuiz...with me, at least. Back on topic! The Carolina sports landscape is changing with the Panthers about to be sold and the basketball team undergoing some changes, but what's the hockey team called?

Question 7

Chicago

Given that this is one of the NHL's most prestigious franchises in recent memory, we'll make this one a bit easier since it's fairly hard to get this wrong. Things seem to be on the up for Chicago sports teams, with the Bears having a good draft, one baseball team winning the World Series two years ago and another building through the farm. Though this hockey team missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade, things should be back to normal next year.

Question 8

Colorado (Denver)

And like with Chicago, I may or may not have forgotten about the gimmick here and had this later down on the list. Love me, hate me, say what you want about me, but all the boys and all the girls are heading to the Mile High City. I'm so sorry for ruining your lyrics, Britney Spears. Anyways, this Denver-based team has Colorado in the name, so you know what that means and why the title is what it is.

Question 9

Columbus

If I had to pick an NHL team to root for besides the one I currently do, it'd probably wind up being the team from Columbus if only because I have friends from Columbus. We have simple reasons for being sports fans, right? Columbus is a beautiful city in this shot, though things were far from pretty when this team blew a 2-0 lead in the playoffs to wind up losing to the team from Washington. Not a good look at all.

Question 10

Dallas

There will be no alliteration here, as the team once based in Minnesota opted against being something like the Dallas Deputies. That would have been one of the stranger, funnier, and weirder names of any professional sports team in the modern age, by the way. You may as well go for something like Rangers if you're not worried about clashing with other teams, but we digress. Which of the following names is the one that the Dallas hockey team actually has?

Question 11

Detroit

Because Detroit's hockey team is one of the most iconic in sports history, this one should be obvious for everyone. At least Detroit has that new arena for basketball and hockey, although both teams disappointed this season and the Pistons aren't going to get much better in basketball anytime soon. Some took issue with the arena being built because of where Detroit stands as a whole, but maybe the city's spirits can be raised if the sports teams start winning again.

Question 12

Edmonton

This is one of those easy ones for any sports fan given the greatest player in NHL history played for this team and spent a fair amount of his career in Edmonton, so getting this wrong is not a good look at all. We have faith in you to get this one right! Just look at all the answers and think back to those ESPN specials with Wayne Gretzky, where they mentioned his tenure in this city for this team.

Question 13

Florida (Sunrise)

Of all the places for a hockey team on this list, I think Sunrise, FL, may be the strangest one - and I live in Florida, just about 40 minutes or so north of Sunrise. You'd think a hockey team would be in Miami, right? Sunrise and the suburbs got the team, which took on the Florida name the same way the Marlins did when they became the state's first Major League Baseball team nearly 30 years ago. What's the answer here?

Question 14

Las Vegas

Seeing as this expansion team has come out of nowhere to become a Stanley Cup Finals contender in their first season and has carried Las Vegas after the tragic shootings in October, this one should be fairly obvious. And no, the Raiders are not an option here because we don't even know if they're still coming to Vegas in the coming years. If you get this one wrong, we're more concerned than we would have been at this time last year.

Question 15

Los Angeles

This one should be really, really, really obvious with how good this team has been this decade. We have optimism that you'll get this right because, if you've made it this far, you're enough of a hockey fan to where you know this by heart. And if you don't know this, it's like I always say: You have at 25 percent chance of getting this one right regardless. So good luck with what I think is one of the easier ones.

Question 16

Montreal

Given that this is the NHL's version of the New York Yankees or Los Angeles Lakers, you cannot get this one wrong. This team has the most titles of any NHL franchise and is second in North American sports behind only the Yankees...so again, you cannot get this one wrong. Even someone like me who doesn't follow hockey as obsessively as I once did still knows this off the top of my head, so what's your excuse if you get this wrong?

Question 17

Minnesota (Saint Paul)

You could also call it St. Paul; either works. This is the only of the main Minnesota sports teams to not be based in Minneapolis, which is interesting but it is what it is. Speaking of Minneapolis, could this city very well become the next New York or Boston? The hockey team is improving, the Twins are alright, the Vikings could make a Super Bowl run, and we saw what the TImberwolves did this season. Maybe good times are coming for Minnesota?

Question 18

Nashville

Nashville, the city of music and country singers. Who wants to go see Taylor Swift? What about Kenny Chesney? Chesney's actually coming to my area soon, so I'll try to be there. You have to love areas like Nashville where music is so prominent and sports are almost secondary, yet the two always come together in one form or another. We love you, Kenny Chesney. Which of the following names does the Nashville hockey team use as their...well, name?

Question 19

New York City

There's two New York teams, so you have to get both of them right. Because we only allow for one correct answer, there are two answers in each option. Good luck on getting both of these correct and just be glad we're not asking you which neighborhood each of these teams is in. And one of these teams keeps moving where they want to play, so we're saving you from that a well. Make my New York self proud and get this right.

Question 20

New Jersey (Newark)

And while I'm from New York, I'll try to avoid my normal light-hearted, endearing jabs at the neighboring state. I really do recommend visiting the Cockroach Museum, though, because it is such a fascinating place that really fits the Garden State. Sorry, New Jerseyites, a New Yorker is stealing your jokes word-for-word. Just be glad that we're not stealing your hockey team as well, even if I do have fun watching this team when they're actually trying to win. That team is...

Question 21

Ottawa

We're back in Canada to discuss another hockey team, though this one is from Ottawa. One of our gimmicks so far has been using other sports team's names from the city in this question, so all of the answers here come from independent league teams, CFL teams, and so forth. In other words, Ottawa has some really cool team names and we very much appreciate that. Which of these cool team names happens to be the one we're actually looking for?

Question 22

Philadelphia

And now we're back in the United States to talk about a city which could field playoff teams in all sports this year. We all know what the Eagles did winning the Super Bowl, the Phillies will certainly have a chance, and the 76ers are currently fighting to win the NBA's Eastern Conference. Oh, and Villanova won the National Championship in college basketball and the city's hockey team made the playoffs too. You have an idea of what the correct answer is, right?

Question 23

Pittsburgh

We're sticking in Pennsylvania to discuss Pittsburgh's hockey team, which has the future Hall of Famer Sidney Crosby, who seems to be one of the league's most hated players because of how physical he is. Physicality in hockey is good! Besides, the Steelers play physical and people love them. The Pirates are kind of physical and they're decent. Oh, it's fans of the opposing teams who all hate Crosby? Fans of this team would tell you to get over it as they get physical too.

Question 24

San Jose

We're back to California to talk about the final of the state's teams. Is anyone else surprised that this massive state which has five baseball teams, five basketball teams, and two football teams only has two hockey teams. Maybe they'll get another team in expansion? Anyways, it's on you to tell us what San Jose's hockey team is known as because, frankly, you should get this one right without any problems. If you don't get this one right, we're going to make a sad face.

Question 25

St. Louis

I can tell you it's not the Cardinals and the Rams, the latter of which isn't allowed to be mentioned in this city. Go and ask someone in St. Louis what they think about the Rams and then find a safe place to hide. Anyway, St. Louis has a hockey team that most people seem to forget about for some reason, but we hope that you'll be able to remember the team's name. That's all you need, not anything else.

Question 26

Tampa

Tampa is an awesome city, though that may be my newfound Florida bias shining through. It's too bad that baseball fans don't seem to care about the Rays, although it's hard to blame them because they're tanking this season. Fans are more supportive of the hockey team, whose name you're obviously going to have to tell us, which is a good sign for them...but as for the Rays, who are trying to get a new stadium, that's not really the best thing.

Question 27

Toronto

We're back to Canada because, come on, this is where the NHL started! This is where the sport of hockey began! Canada as a whole, we mean, not just Toronto. When are we going to see Drake become a minority owner of this highly successful hockey team which hasn't won a Stanley Cup in over 50 years? I guess it'll be when Drake stops fighting with Kendrick Perkins over...things? At least we finally got to see what would happen between Drake and Kendrick.

Question 28

Vancouver

We're back in Canada once again, this time to see what's going on in Vancouver. This team's name has also become an insult for Canadians among some people, which is an interesting choice that we sort of understand? Sports fans are strange people, myself included. You shouldn't have any problems getting this one right with how iconic this team is - there are a lot of iconic hockey teams, what can we say - so good luck and get it right.

Question 29

Washington D.C.

We're off to my nation's capitol...or is it capital? That minor difference is why both words are in the answer box, so really think on this if you think Capitol or Capital is the answer. Maybe you think it's Bullets or Mystics, so go and answer this one already instead of reading our description. Or, keep reading and tell us how much you enjoy our quizzes. If you do that and then you go answer this, I can tell you we'd be so happy.

Question 30

Winnipeg

We're back in Canada for the final time, so let's finish our time in the country above mine. And if you're taking this quiz and you're Canadian in some way, shape, or form, hi! Congrats for making it this far in our quiz and we hope that it ends well for you and you get a good grade. If not and you still managed to make it this far, at least you might've learned something. What's the correct answer here?
