During the 80's we saw the rise of the very first film franchises especially in the sci-fi, action, and horror genres. The teen comedy also became popular in this decade and continued to gain momentum well into the early 2000's. The 90's was notable for the rise in the production of independent films and the use of CGI for special effects. Disaster films and Disney films were also popular during the 1990's. Special effects continued to become more advanced in 2000's and the musical, epic and comic book genres of film all enjoyed a resurgence.
