The X-Men are one of the most beloved superhero teams in comics. To audiences, they are the most relatable of the teams because of the characters. They are a group of people with exceptional abilities and are treated terribly by the rest of society out of fear. Audiences can see themselves a lot in these characters and their struggles with fitting in with others, experiencing love for the first time, and trying to overcome personal fears.
Another great thing about the X-Men is that their powers and abilities tend to reflect or instigate their overall personalities. For example, Rogue is a character who turns out to be more closed off than other mutants because she doesn't want to hurt anyone on accident. Cyclops had trouble controlling his abilities growing up, leading him to accidentally hurt others. As leader of the X-Men, when he grew older, he wanted to do everything in his power to protect his fellow mutants.
The X-Men have had incredible adaptations from the original comic books. There is the very famous and critically-acclaimed X-Men: The Animated Series. In 1999, we saw them adapted to the big screen in Bryan Singer's X-Men, which then became a franchise that produced several movies after making millions of dollars.
Try and test your knowledge of these great characters by guessing their mutant abilities. Good luck!
Gambit
Gambit, also known as Remy LeBeau, made his comic debut July of 1990 in Marvel's Uncanny X-Men Annual #14. The New Orleans-based mutant joined the iconic X-Men team after saving fellow team member Storm. He then went on to have a romantic relationship with another mutant - Rogue - which was highlighted in the critically-acclaimed X-Men: The Animated Series. Gambit's popularity continues to grow; as of now, FOX is planning a movie of his own with Channing Tatum set to play him. However, what is Gambit's power?
Psylocke
Psylocke, also known as Elizabeth "Betsy" Braddock, made her comic book debut December of 1976 in Captain Britain. Originally, Psylocke played second fiddle to Captain Britain, which just so happened to be her twin brother. She appeared in the fourth season of the animated series and was played by Olivia Munn in the movie X-Men: Apocalypse. She has become a fan favorite and is often cosplayed at comic conventions for her iconic costume and sword. What are Psylocke's abilities?
Angel
Angel, also known as Warren Worthington III, first showed up in the comics September of 1963 in the original X-Men comic book. Unlike the other mutants, Angel had a very privileged upbringing, which gave him a more selfish and entitled personality. His antics often led him to butt heads with other team members early on. On the big screen, he was in both X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Apocalypse. Please, try not to think hard when guessing this mutant's powers.
Colossus
Colossus, also known as Piotr Rasputin, is a Russian mutant who made his appearance May of 1975 in Giant-Size X-Men #1. He is the biggest and strongest member of the X-Men, yet he upholds a soft and dutiful personality. On the big screen, he has been portrayed in X2, the critically-acclaimed sequel to the original X-Men movie, as well as the recent Deadpool movie with Ryan Reynolds. His powers are unique to him in that they enhance his already impressive physical stature.
Banshee
Banshee, also known as Sean Cassidy, made his debut to comic book readers January of 1967 in X-Men #28. He is known for being an Irish mutant who spent a lot of his life as a regular New York cop. So, unlike the rest of the X-Men who primarily consist of younger mutants, he is older. He was never a mainstream mutant and never got the attention as most of the others. He had a supporting role in X-Men: First Class. What are Banshee's abilities?
Bishop
Bishop, also known as Lucas Bishop, made his first appearance November 1991 in Uncanny X-Men #282. Bishop, as a character, continues to find more and more favor with fans as his popularity continues to grow. We saw him a lot in the animated series, yet the first glimpse of Bishop on the big screen wasn't until 2014 in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Unfortunately for Bishop fans, he didn't get a lot of screen time and wasn't in the follow-up film. What are Bishop's abilities?
Night Crawler
Nightcrawler, also known as Kurt Wagner, made his comic book debut May of 1975 in Giant-Size X-Men #1. Like fellow mutants Beast and Mystique, Nightcrawler's abilities affected his looks, giving him a blue skin color, three fingers, and two toes on his feet, as well as a tail. Unlike other mutants, Nightcrawler is a religious man and is a practising Catholic. His role in both the animated series and in the movies are similar in that he had a smaller role. What are his abilities?
Kitty Pryde
Kitty Pryde, also known as Katherine Anne Pryde, is a mutant who first appeared January of 1980 in Uncanny X-Men. She was the youngest member of the team and kept to that role because she was often treated as such. She was portrayed in the first two live action films but didn't get the screen time her fans wanted her to have until the third movie X-Men: The Last Stand when she was played by Ellen Paige. What is this mutant's superpower?
Beast
Beast, also known as Henry "Hank" McCoy, is an original X-Men and is, by far, the smartest member of the team, along with possibly Professor Xavier. Unlike the other mutants who tend to keep their feet heavily planted at the X-Mansion, Hank likes to dip his toes into politics and is an activist. His mission consists of trying to shed light on the open discrimination mutants face and fighting for their individual rights. What is Hank's, aka Beast's, mutant powers?
Mystique
Mystique, also known as Raven Darkhölme, made her first comic appearance in issue #16 of Ms. Marvel. Since then, she has gone on to become one of the most famous mutants. Most of her time is spent as a supervillain working under Magneto against the X-Men. Mystique on the big screen was played by two well-known actresses - Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence - where we saw the character undergo a lot of struggles in trying to embrace who she was. What are her powers?
Iceman
Iceman, also known as Bobby Drake, made his debut to comic book readers September of 1963 in The X-Men #1. Iceman is not only an original X-Men character but is in a similar class as Magneto and Jean Grey, as far as being one of the most powerful mutants are concerned. He has been portrayed in both the animated series and the movies with Shawn Ashmore playing him in the majority of the X-Men movies, where his relationship with Rogue and Kitty Pryde is shown. What are his abilities?
Juggernaut
Juggernaut, also known as Cain Marko, made his first appearance to comic book readers July of 1965 in X-Men #12. He is an interesting mutant because - aside from being the step-brother of Professor X - he is virtually the exact opposite of him when it comes to powers and abilities. He wears a large metal helmet to prevent him from being susceptible to telepathic attacks by Professor Xavier. He is one of the X-Men's main villains often working with Magneto. What are his abilities?
Rogue
Rogue was first introduced to comic book readers November 1981 in Avengers Annual #10. She fits in with the X-Men perfectly given what her abilities have the potential to do, leading to her becoming a very closed-off individual. She is one of the main characters in both the animated series and in the X-Men film franchise. Audiences got to see her struggles vividly on screen with Anna Paquin providing continuity to the character. What are Rogue's abilities?
Emma Frost
Emma Frost made her debut January of 1980 in the Uncanny X-Men. Starting out as a major villain to the X-Men, Emma Frost eventually became one of the team members. She lives up to her Frost name by always wearing white clothing. While her animated series screen time was limited, Emma Frost had a much bigger role on the big screen in X-Men: First Class, where she was played by Mad Men actress January Jones. What are her abilities?
Cyclops
Cyclops, also known as Scott Summers, is one of the original X-Men and is also the leader of the iconic team under the tutelage of Professor Xavier. Appropriately enough, he made his comic book debut in X-Men #1. Like Gambit, he also had a prominent love interest throughout the comics and series in fellow X-Man Jean Grey. That carried over to the big screen where James Marsden played him. Cyclops is a mutant who was a tortured soul because of his struggle to control his powers. What were his powers?
Toad
Toad, also known as Mortimer Toynbee, was first introduced to comic book readers March of 1964 in X-Men #4. He is one of the enemies of the X-Men and was one of Magneto's lackeys. He is a mutant who did not get any favors from the X-gene when it comes to looks and is always shown as a dirty and slimy creature. He appeared in the original X-Men movie, played by the martial artist/actor Ray Park. Toad did not make hardly any appearances in the sequels due to being killed by Storm. What are his unique abilities?
Magneto
Magneto, also known as Erik Lehnsherr and Max Eisenhardt, made his debut in The X-Men #1 in September 1963. Magneto is one of the most powerful mutants and is also the main antagonist of the X-Men. What are this famous villain's unique abilities?
Sabretooth
Sabretooth, also known as Victor Creed, was first introduced to comic book readers August of 1977 in Iron Fist #4. Sabretooth usually worked with Magneto against the X-Men and is also played by Liev Schreiber in the forgettable X-Men Origins: Wolverine film. What are his powers?
Wolverine
Wolverine, also known as Logan and James Howlett, is arguably the most famous X-Men member even if that is not where he got his start. He made his comic book debut November 1974 in The Incredible Hulk #181. He is beloved for his misunderstood personality and frank banter with others. He has shown up in some form or another in nearly every X-Men adaptation, like the animated series, and most of the movies where Hugh Jackman has played him since 1999.
Professor X
Professor X, also known as Charles Xavier, made his comic book debut September of 1963 in The X-Men #1. Professor X lives up to his name as he runs a school for mutants who feel like they don't belong in society. He also is the leader of the X-Men. He is seen in multiple animated series and on the big screen, he is played by much-acclaimed actors Sir Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy. What are Professor X's abilities?
Havoc
Havoc, also known as Alex Summers, made his debut in the comics March of 1969 in Uncanny X-Men #54. Havoc is the brother of the X-Men's team leader, Cyclops. He's had a limited portrayal in the animated series, but finally found a more fleshed-out version on the big screen in X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse, where he is played by Lucas Till, showing his struggle to learn how to control his powers under the tutelage of Professor X. What are his abilities?
Jubilee
Jubilation Lee made her comic book debut May of 1989 in Uncanny X-Men #244. Jubilee is the youngest member of the X-Men who took a liking to Wolverine and looks at him as a mentor. She is one of the main characters of the X-Men: The Animated Series. However, she has not been portrayed in the movies very much. Having only cameos recently until a more fleshed-out role in X-Men: Apocalypse to the glee of many fans of hers, what are Jubilee's abilities?
Blink
Blink, also known as Clarice Ferguson, made her debut to comic book readers October of 1994 in Uncanny X-Men #317. Blink might be the last addition to the X-Men on this list but that doesn't take anything away from her. She quickly became a fan favorite soon after she was introduced. She had a brief appearance in the animated series and in the movie X-Men: Days of Future Past. That may change, however, as she can expect more screen time in the upcoming TV show The Gifted, which is a live-action series set in the X-Men's world.
Jean Grey
Jean Grey first appeared to comic book readers September of 1963 in The X-Men #1. She is known for being one of the main team members and has a romantic relationship with the team leader Cyclops.
