It's Time For A Baseball Pub Quiz!

There's a reason baseball is referred to as America's Game. While Major League Baseball (MLB) no longer reigns as the most popular professional sports league in the United States, at least in regard to annual revenues and TV ratings, the sport itself has the deepest roots in the country and hearkens people back to a simpler time - even if it's not exactly a simple game to understand for new fans. There's just something soothing and relaxing about a midday baseball game in the bright summer sun when you can hear the crack of the bat hitting the ball and the sound of a glove popping. The sport might have undergone slight rule changes over the past century-plus, but the heart of the game hasn't changed. That's why even non-hardcore baseball fans at least know general rules as well as which team has been the most dominant throughout MLB history, all of which will come up later in the quiz. But this 40-question quiz isn't just about MLB history; instead, it includes questions relating to current MLB players and popular baseball movies. The Sandlot, A League of Their Own, Field of Dreams, and Major League, are just a handful of baseball films that have captured the imagination of entire generations and, in part, help maintain the sport's popularity.

Question 1

What is the name of the MLB's year-end championship?

Baseball was popular in the United States during the 19th century, but it wasn't until the 20th century when the MLB was formed and a championship series was created to determine the best team out of both the AL and National League. Boston defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first ever championship series and, while it wasn't contested in 1904 and 1994, it has been played every year since. It was been won by 23 different organizations since its inception.

Question 2

What year was the MLB founded?

As previously mentioned, the MLB didn't come into existence until the early 20th century, when the National League and AL merged following a longstanding conflict between the two in which player contracts and legal disputes arose regularly. Each league had eight teams when they merged, although they never played teams from the opposing league during the regular season; the only time a team from the AL would play one from the National League was during the World Series.

Question 3

How many players can a team field at any one time?

In regard to how it's played, baseball is similar to football. Whereas teams in hockey, basketball, and soccer are playing both offense and defense depending on possession, baseball is divided into nine innings in which both teams take a turn at the plate. They can score as many runs as possible, but their turn on offense is over when the opposition records three outs. Including the pitcher, the fielding team is permitted to have how many players on the diamond?

Question 4

What position exists in the AL that doesn't in the NL?

Despite the AL and National League all but acting as different conferences in the MLB today, there was once a drastic separation as teams from the two leagues hardly, if ever, played each other. They also had slightly different rules. Today, the MLB has interleague play, which sees teams play 20 of their 162 games outside of their respective leagues and, while rules are mostly the same, there's one significant difference, that being that pitchers don't hit in the AL.

Question 5

Who is the current MLB commissioner?

Despite being formed in 1903, the MLB didn't officially have a commissioner until 1920, when federal judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis took over the position as appointed by the owners of the league's teams. He was given a lifetime contract and held the position until his death in 1944, following which Happy Chandler took over for a five-year period. There has since been eight different commissioners, including the current one, who was appointed in 2015 after a 13-year stint by the previous commissioner.

Question 6

What is it called when a player hits a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game?

There's only so many types of hits a player can get in baseball. The most common is a single, in which the batter is safe at first base. A batter records a double when he is safe at second base and so on. It's a rare feat when a batter records a single, double, triple, and home run in a single game, which shouldn't be all that surprising since it's hard to get four hits in a single game to begin with. No player has recorded the accomplishment this season, while seven did in 2017, and only two did in 2016.

Question 7

Which team has won the most World Series championships?

The first ever World Series in 1903 was won by Boston and other teams to have won the championship since then include the Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Athletics, Cincinnati Reds, and Detroit Tigers. But none of those teams lay claim to being the most successful MLB franchise of all-time.
