Question 1

Who is this metal-clad hero?

Each of the Avengers have a unique style to them which is expressed by a mix of powers, personal quirks, and color schemes. But this character is pretty much defined by his costume, as his costume IS his power set. This guy is rich! His superpower is money. Well, money and the superintelligence to make that money into all kinds of scientific gadgets, power suits, alternate energy sources, AI butlers, and strange evil robot overlords. Can you name this hero?

Question 2

What war did Captain America fight in?

Captain America is a veteran. He served in the United States armed forces, volunteering for a new experimental drug treatment to turn him into the first of a line of super soldiers. That serum was ultimately destroyed by enemy spies and its recipe lost when the infiltrators also assassinated the scientist who made it, leaving Captain America as the only such hero with these powers. He went onto fight in a war for truth, justice, and the American way (not unlike a certain DC hero). But which war was it he fought in?

Question 3

What is it this green rage monster does?

The Hulk is a man (or monster) of many talents. He can punch his way through the gladiatorial arenas of space. He can shapeshift from a puny mortal (who happens to be the world’s leading expert on gamma radiation) into a musclebound monstrous brute and back. He has exchanged blows with gods and alien warlords, has taken out a Chitauri bio-ship with one punch, and is a founding member of the Avengers. But there is one particular feat which he does best.

Question 4

Where is Avengers Tower located?

The Marvel Universe is a big place. There are lots of major cities, both real and fictional, not to mention volcanoes, temples, sanctum sanctorums, and pocket universes. From the heights of Mount Wundagore to the sunken depths of Atlantis, there is plenty to explore, and that is not even counting the mystical realms like Asgard and K’un Lun. While the Avengers get around, they still maintain a consistent base of operations from which to plan and recover from their missions. In which city is Avengers Tower?

Question 5

Who is this master spy?

She is one of the deadliest spies on Earth. She has assassinated key targets, infiltrated some of the most secure facilities on the planet, and proved as deadly in hand-to-hand combat as she is with her guns. She has fought alongside and against most of the Avengers at one point or another. She also has slain alien invaders of at least three different species. From the airborne city of Sokovia to the streets of Lagos, she has fought to save the people of Earth. Who is this Russian superspy?

Question 6

What was the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been going for more than a decade now. It has produced 19 films to date with at least 4 more scheduled to be released before the end of 2019. It also has produced a number of hit TV shows, such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Runaways, not to mention the Netflix shows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. The MCU has included everything from magic to alien invasions to comedies about miniaturization powers. But this is the film where it all began.

Question 7

What weapon does Captain America use?

Some heroes just use their hands. Others have powers. Captain America has his special weapon. Okay, he also uses his hands, feet, abs, and pretty much any gun or improvised weapon within reach. After all, the man is a super soldier. But beyond his love of martial arts, motorcycle fu, and bench pressing helicopters, there is one weapon which stands out as unique and distinctly his. His first version of this he used in World War II. This was replaced by a nigh-indestructible one he received in the modern era, followed by a Wakandan one. What was it?

Question 8

Name the Norse god associated with causing mischief?

This character might appear in the Marvel comics and films as a villainous magical trickster with powers of illusion, but he was actually inspired by a much older deity from Norse Mythology. In the first Avengers film, this character led an invasion force of Chitauri, mind-controlled Hawkeye into working for him, and manipulated the Hulk into raging out aboard the Helicarrier and destroying it. His mythological exploits are even more impressive. Can you name this Asgardian deity known for causing chaos?

Question 9

What is this robotic villain called?

The best villains challenge heroes on a personal level. Who cares about bank robbers in black masks stuffing stolen cash into a sack? Where is the emotional investment in watching a roided out nutjob in a mechanized suit of power armor rampaging through downtown Manhattan for no particular reason? Real villains challenge heroes on a personal (often ideological) level. And this artificial intelligence is the mastermind of evil plans that undermine all the Avengers’ oversights. Who is this evil robot?

Question 10

Which organ of Tony Stark’s is damaged?

Plenty of characters have a tragic flaw. Captain America, for example, is a man out of time, struggling to connect with the modern world after being frozen in ice. The Hulk loses all control and all of his mental faculties while raging. Black Widow was psychologically traumatized by the abusive training that made her a spy. But Tony Stark is a man with a very literal—and metaphorical—flaw that manifests in an injury that has damaged one of his internal organs.

Question 11

Who is the Sorcerer Supreme?

The MCU is full of all sorts of wonders. From Asgardian gods to K'un Lun's chi-wielding kung fu monks to sardonic space raccoons, the place can quickly become overwhelming. This is probably as good an answer as any as to why there are so many superpowered individuals dedicated to protecting life on the planet. But one individual must guard against the weirdest elements of all, such as eldritch magics, time travel, and incursions from achronal alternate dimensions. This person is the Sorcerer Supreme, the MCU’s magical guardian. But just who is the current Sorcerer Supreme?

Question 12

Where is Black Widow from?

She is a legendary spy and fights alongside the Avengers, including Captain America, but she is not an American. That said, she is a woman of the world--and of the political underworld shrouded in secrecy. It’s not like she’s alone in the world of espionage, of course. Marvel has other major intelligence operatives like Agent Phil Coulson and the Winter Soldiers, not to mention the infamous Nick Fury. But they’re all American (even if the Winter Soldier was used as an asset by other countries). Can you name the country Black Widow came from?

Question 13

What agency does Nick Fury run?

Speaking of master spies, there is no one quite like Nick Fury. This Cyclopean indomitable curmudgeon is a genius at strategy and an intelligence operative of the highest caliber. He successfully manipulated the Avengers into forming in the first film of the franchise and he survived his own assassination through careful planning and deception. He is slow to trust and twice as prickly as a Chitauri warship. He has access to all the global defense systems and plenty of cool spy gadgets. Can you name the organization for which he works?

Question 14

Where is Black Panther from?

Black Panther is a royal title, a tribal mark of nobility as a warrior-king blessed by the Panther God and the goddess Bast to those who prove worthy and who consume the heart-shaped herb. The title stretches back millennia (and if one reads the comic, it goes back at least as far as 1,000,000 BC, which is to say the Black Panther predates human life on Earth). The most recent man to wear the mantle of Black Panther, T’Challa, is leading his people boldly into the 21st Century. What country is he from?

Question 15

Name this war criminal from World War II.

Nazis are more or less the ultimate bad guys. Sure, there may be two sides to every story, but as their side is literally built around making genocide the cornerstone of its ultimate plans, Nazis clearly are on the wrong side of whatever story they're in. And as Nazis go, few are as ambitious as this HYDRA leader who equipped an army with weapons far beyond what the rest of the world could produce at the time. He was so evil the universe itself punished him for his crimes. Can you name this villain?

Question 16

What is this powerful artifact?

There are lots of rare powerful artifacts in the MCU. The Tesseract. The Cauldron of the Cosmos. The Staff of the Living Tribunal. Captain America’s shield (seriously, it’s made of the only substance harder than that man’s head). But this is one of the most powerful of them all, an arcane item that was formed in ages past by the Vishanti, and which in the MCU is noted for both containing an Infinity Gem and for having power over time itself. Can you name this arcane artifact?

Question 17

How many Infinity Gems are there?

The Infinity Gems (or as they have come to be known in the MCU, the Infinity Stones) have been scattered across the cosmos, but in the third Avengers film the Gems all came together as Thanos collected them and put them into the Infinity Gauntlet. This magnificent item allowed him to harness their power. As each of the Gems is so powerful it can literally kill someone trying to wield one if the person is not prepared, this makes his Infinity Gauntlet one of Marvel’s most important items. But just how many Infinity Gems are there?

Question 18

What is Thor’s hammer called?

Thor is known for several things. He is the Norse God of Thunder. He is a founding member of the Avengers in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in the main Marvel 616 Universe of the comics. Oh, and he has a hammer. A big powerful lightning-channeling hammer that he uses to smash his foes. This item is one of the most recognizable weapons in pop culture, but it can actually be traced back to the Old Norse poems collected in the Poetic Eddas (and, if one examines Scandinavian archaeology and cave paintings, far further back). Name this weapon.

Question 19

Where did the Hulk go at the end of Age of Ultron?

The second Avengers film, Age of Ultron, was a masterful tale that showed how the heroes from the first film had risen to become a global peace-keeping force that was slowly becoming undone by the weight of their own greatness pressing against the cracks in each character’s humanity. The main villain is the manifestation of Tony Stark’s ego, fears, and genius coming back to haunt him. But that villain also is the result of Bruce Banner’s genius mind. Where does Bruce Banner (AKA the Hulk) go at the end of the film to escape his failures?

Question 20

Which alien race invaded New York in The Avengers?

This might be a tricky question for some. After all, New York is one of those cities that always seems to get invaded by one threat or another, with giant robots, aquatic kaiju, cyborg terrorists, rampaging gamma-powered monsters, and Frank Miller’s excessive water towers all coming to mind. Just in the course of the film The Avengers, the city got a new skyscraper, had a nuke lobbed at it, was visited by a god, and had an alien fleet invade through a giant sky portal. So to specify, we’re asking what manner of aliens came through that portal.

Question 21

Who killed Black Panther’s father?

To be clear, this question is addressing the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which occurred in the film Captain America: Civil War. T’Chaka, the King of Wakanda, was slain in an explosive terrorist attack that left his son T’Challa to inherit the mantle of the Black Panther and to undertake a quest for vengeance. In the film, Bucky was framed for the attack and he went on the run, prompting the film’s titular superhero Civil War when Cap sided with him. But who really killed T’Challa’s father?

Question 22

What is the Scarlet Witch’s first name?

Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful characters in the multiverse. Part of the reason for this may be that her powers are poorly defined, achieving a range of manifestations that are described as both magic and probability manipulation at different points. This has resulted in her basically being able to do anything. She is an enigma and manages to steal the show when writers give her a moment to step onto the centerstage. But one thing can be clearly identified about her: her name.

Question 23

Who was Captain America’s lover in World War II?

Captain America somehow juxtaposes an awkward position as a loner (the man out of time), a leader of men (the captain), a socialite (half his stories are about friendship), and a lover (for a loner, he sure has a quite a few notable intimate relationships). Perhaps the oldest meaningful romantic relationship he had was with a woman in the 1940s who helped found the spy organization S.H.I.E.L.D. and was one of the most important spies and soldiers of the 40s and 50s. Can you name her?

Question 24

What is Sam Wilson’s superhero name?

Sam Wilson has had a number of superhero names over the years, but one of them has followed him for most of his career. And what a career it has been! The guy fought alongside Captain America as an equal without the help of a Super Soldier Serum to augment his muscles. All he needed was his wits, hit training, and a set of mechanized wings to strap to his back (and, if one reads the comics, a bird companion). In a world of gods, Hulks, and magic, his humanity makes him stand out as all the more heroic!

Question 25

What fictional metal is found in Wakanda?

There are a number of fictional materials in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that define its economy as being different from that of our own world. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, most of the plot revolves around the control, sales, development, and black market acquisition of rare Asgardian, Chitauri, and Ultron-made goods. Rare materials from space also were key plot points in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Luke Cage. But until Wolverine and his adamantium bones slice their way into the MCU., it looks like Wakanda has the strongest earthly metal around. Can you name this rare substance?

Question 26

What is Hawkeye’s favored weapon?

Hawkeye has gotten the worst roles in the various Avengers films. In Thor, he looked like he had potential, but then was not allowed to take a shot. In the first Avengers film, he was mind-controlled into attacking his allies. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, he is portrayed as an old man and a family man who is out of his depth. Captain America: Civil War then went onto brand him a terrorist, resulting in his absence from Infinity War. Yet somehow, he has hit all his targets and made every shot he’s taken. But with what weapon?

Question 27

What turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk?

Once upon a time, Bruce Banner was a mild-mannered weapons designer/scientist who just wanted to be with the woman he loved and make really deadly bombs that the government could use to threaten its enemies abroad. Of course, depending who is rewriting this origin story on any given day, he might not have been all THAT mild-mannered and the government’s enemies might not be limited to those abroad. While some discrepancies exist in the retelling, in almost every version the same thing turned the puny genius Banner into the incredible Hulk. What did this?

Question 28

Name this alien artifact.

Few artifacts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have caused quite so much trouble as this one has. It allowed the Red Skull to power his insane superweapons in World War II and it was responsible for opening a giant sky portal above New York that allowed for the Chitauri to invade during the events of The Avengers. It also was a source of trouble more recently when Thanos took it from the Asgardians and used the Space Stone contained within to fuel his already unstoppable power. What is this powerful artifact?

Question 29

Which fictional city did Ultron attack?

If you ever paid attention in geography in school, that’s okay, because this question is about one of those places whose geography has no corresponding location to anywhere on our version of Earth. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, the villainous robot Ultron has the masterful idea to wipe out all carbon-based life on Earth because he sees humanity as a problem that needs curing. To do this, he decided to airlift an entire city and then drop it on the planet like a weaponized meteor. What city did he choose for this attack?

Question 30

What is S.H.I.E.L.D.'s flying base of operations called?

The Avengers has a great moment where Captain America tells Nick Fury he does not expect to be surprised by anything anymore. Captain America passes Nick the money without a word. Thus did the floating aircraft base of S.H.I.E.L.D. first appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What is this airborne vehicular base called?

Question 31

Who made Spider-Man’s Iron Spider Suit?

In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spidey spends most of the movie in smart mechanized suit made for him by one of the Avengers. At the end of the film, he is stripped of this and forced to fight with just a cloth costume to hide his appearance. For his heroics, one of the older heroes offers him an all new mechanized suit, which he politely turns down. But in The Avengers: Infinity War, he finally gets to let loose with this Iron Spider Suit. Who built it?

Question 32

A popular character who first made her film debut in Guardians of the Galaxy where she was played by Zoe Saldana, this mean green killing machine is actually the daughter of the Mad Titan Thanos. Question 33

Which Infinity Gem is in Vision’s head in the Avengers’ films?

The Infinity Gems, or as they’re known in the MCU, the Infinity Stones, are among the most powerful objects in the universe. The stone in question here is one used to control the minds of various characters throughout the film The Avengers when it was part of Loki’s staff. Then, in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it was put into Vision’s head, helping to give him full consciousness and a unique personality. In the tragic climax of Infinity War, it was ripped out of Vision’s skull and put in Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet. Can you name this Infinity Gem?

Question 34

Of course, for all his impressive power, Star-Lord has some choice comments about the nature of his chin. Can you name this mass murderer?

Question 35

Who is this military-trained hero?

This hero first appeared in the original film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man. Then in Iron Man 2, he gained his own suit of armor and teamed up with Tony Stark to fight off hordes of robot drones. In the following movies, he has continued to fight in various struggles, including the Superhero Civil War and in fighting off the invasion of Wakanda by Thanos’ forces. He started his day as an American patriot, loyal to the military, but by the end of Infinity Gauntlet, he had come to value the whole Earth. Who is he?

Question 36

Where did the Collector live?

The Collector is a weird guy. He has basically made hoarding into a career, a superpower, a hobby, and an impressive legacy that somehow makes him one of the most respected people in the universe. At the end of Thor 2: The Dark World he makes a cameo and expounds on the lore of the MCU. Question 37

Which character was part of the Collector’s collection?

Here is another question about the Collector (we could start a collection of these!). He also traffics in people, as can be seen in a number of instances such as when one of the women he has enslaved dies. But there is another obscure character in his possession. Well, two, but we’re not counting the dog. Who is it?

Question 38

How did Star-Lord defeat Ronan the Accuser?

Star-Lord is not just a funny hero. He is a running joke in the body of a man. Full of outdated references, childlike idealism, musical adoration, and all the maturity of a 1980s teen comedy, it is a marvel that he has survived as long as he has. This is especially true when one remembers how he challenged Ronan the Accuser at the climax of Guardians of the Galaxy. Star-Lord might be skilled with a gun or his rocket boots, but those were not the tools he relied on here. So just how did he defeat Ronan?

Question 39

Who is this speedster?

He is fast. No, faster than that! By the time you have finished reading this sentence, he can have already saved three people from various disastrous dooms (whether those disasters are caused by nature, bullets, or armies of angry human-hating robots). Unfortunately, while saving a much slower hero, he ultimately met his ending helping someone who couldn’t dodge incoming attacks. He is predominantly called “Pietro” throughout the film Avengers: Age of Ultron, but there is another name by which he is known.

Question 40

What was Tony’s suit’s AI called?

For most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tony Stark steals the show. He was the first character to get a film, kicking off the whole franchise. He was the first character to get his own trilogy. He has appeared as a leading figure in the films of other characters like in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. But up until the events of Age of Ultron, he had a companion who traveled with him, an AI who helped Tony and without whom he’d be helpless. What was this AI called?

Question 41

Who is this?

If Tony Stark is completely dependent on his AI for his survival, he is no less dependent on this other person, who has at different points supported him as an assistant, a lover, a business partner, and a nagging motherly figure trying to get him to stop acting like an immature man-boy and get his act together. This character really SHOULD get her own movie, considering how underappreciated she is and how many Marvel films she has appeared in. Can you name her?

Question 42

What animal did Thor mistake Rocket for in Avengers: Infinity War?

Rocket Raccoon is the ultimate proof of the commercial and popular success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is a gun-toting rage-a-holic sardonic space raccoon who suffers from depression and whose best friend is a trisyllabic tree, which is perhaps the most comic bookish thing to ever come out of comics and end up on the big screen. A decade ago, who would have believed audiences would ever accept that? He just does not like to be called a raccoon. Which is one reason we can all appreciate Thor mistaking him for a different earth animal in Avengers: Infinity War.

Question 43

What part of New York is Spider-Man from?

Spider-Man. He does whatever a Spider-Can. Okay, he really just shoots webs, climbs on buildings, and demonstrates various acts of impressive physical strength (plus, there is the whole Spider Sense thing, which we’re pretty sure Spiders don’t actually have). But what he does do well is protect his area of the MCU. And by his area, we don’t mean all of New York. You see, he is a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. As such, we ask if you know the specific borough that Spider-Man makes his home.

Question 44

Who is this S.H.I.E.L.D. commander?

This character is Nick Fury’s second-in-command at S.H.I.E.L.D. and is first introduced to the MCU in the first Avengers film where she is played by Cobie Smulders. Compared to most of the other characters to appear in the MCU, she is a fairly recent addition to the world of Marvel Comics, having been created by Brian Michael Bendis where she first appeared in issue 4 of his book The New Avengers. She has survived Loki’s attacks and stood against the S.H.I.E.L.D. infiltration by HYDRA, helping Captain America to escape from captivity in The Winter Soldier. Can you name this character?

Question 45

What non-Marvel movie was referenced on Nick Fury’s gravestone?

Nick Fury steals the show every time he appears on screen and a large part of that is because of Samuel L. Jackson’s amazing performance. Before Jackson took the role, Fury was known for being a cigar-chomping white male in Marvel’s 616 Universe in the comics, though the Ultimate Universe (otherwise known as 1610) portrayed Nick Fury with art taken directly from images of Samuel L. Jackson. At the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Fury fakes his death. On his gravestone is a reference to one of Jackson’s other famous films.

Question 46

Name this unique Iron Man suit of armor.

Iron Man has an armor for every occasion. Is there a stealth mission? He has stealth armor. He can’t carry his armor somewhere? Well, there’s an armor for that too! This particular armor gained popularity in the comics during the event World War Hulk, but it reached fans of the movies when it appeared in Age of Ultron. Can you name this armor?

Question 47

Who is this genius scientist?

There are a lot of brilliant minds in the MCU. Tony Stark. Bruce Banner. Aldrich Killian. But of all the various geniuses of scientific invention that we have seen, none quite compares to a sixteen-year-old girl from Wakanda. This member of the royal family received the best education possible, but she already lives in a society whose technology and education systems are far ahead of anything in any Western country . She has achieved great feats in utilizing vibranium to develop nanite armor and to remotely control vehicles from afar. Can you name this Wakandan genius?

Question 48

Who is the head of the Jabari tribe?

First appearing in the film Black Panther, this tribal chieftain stood alongside T'Challa and the other Avengers in the frontlines of the battle against Thanos’ armies. The character is a valiant warrior, a vegetarian, and a traditionalist who values the ways of his people. He is also impressive in how he was adapted into the films, as he has been taken from the comic villain Man-Ape (and the implications of portraying an African man as apelike could well have proved offensive, but the films deftly managed his adaptation). Can you name him?

Question 49

Where did Thor, Rocket, and Groot travel to in Infinity War?

The realm of the Dwarves in Norse Mythology, this place was portrayed in the film Avengers: Infinity War as a cosmic weapons forge powered by the heart of a dying star. One of the great moments of the film occurred when Thor rekindled the forge, literally reigniting the heat of a star through his godly potency. Another great moment came with the introduction of the dwarven smith Eitri, played by Peter Dinklage (a casting choice that simultaneously played to stereotypes and defied them by making the actor a gigantic dwarf with CGI). Can you name this place?

Question 50

Whose logo appeared in the post-credits scene in Infinity War?

This final question contains some major spoilers, but as you’re no doubt caught up on Avengers: Infinity War, this won’t be a problem. In the post-credits scene at the end of Infinity War, Nick Fury hits a beacon or communicator of some kind while shouting “Code Red.” He then dissolves into ash like so many other characters, his last profanity going unfinished as he dies. The camera then pans down to an iconic image on the screen of the device he was holding, one true Marvel fans should instantly recognize as the emblem on a certain hero’s costume.
