If You Score Less Than 100% On This Quiz, Burn Your Harry Potter Books

Ever wonder what your life would be like without the Harry Potter saga? Yeah, me neither. If, like most of this generation, you're a Potterhead, you know you owe your favorite book and movie series to the goddess that is J.K. Rowling. Bless the day that she wrote the first book with a child in her lap in a cafe, and thank goodness she didn't give up when her draft was initially rejected. Rowling gave us the most magical story (literally) about witches and wizards that we could have ever hoped for, and even though the books and movies ended with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, the wizarding world lives on.

So, it's your lucky day: we're bringing you yet another Harry Potter quiz for you to test your Potterhead skills on. We'll remind you of moments you probably forgot about and make you relive the best parts of the series. In this quiz, only the books are fair game! Though the movies are great, they have changed some details here and there - so be careful not to confuse events in the movies for those in the books! Think you've got what it takes? Prove it!

Question 1

What spell did Voldemort cast on Harry that bounced back on him?

Ah, Voldemort. Always trying to ruin someone's life for eternal power, glory and life. There is quite literally no one who fears death as much as Voldemort did, and this paranoia was his downfall. We won't go into detail, but Voldemort killed Harry's parents, Lily and James Potter, because they and their son represented a threat to him. He then meant to cast a curse on Harry, but the magic bounced off the baby and back onto Voldemort. What spell was it?

Question 2

Who brings Harry Potter to the Dursley's house?

When Lily and James Potter died, Harry inevitably had to be taken care of. Without a mother or a father, and with the dangerous nature of the magical world at the time, friends of his parents decided to bring him to his aunt and uncle's house in Little Surrey. Although awful, mean, and unfair towards Harry, the Dursleys managed to conserve Harry's innocence until he was of age to go to Hogwarts. Who brought baby Harry to their home?

Question 3

What is the main characteristic of a Gryffindor?

When Hogwarts was created by the four great witches and wizards Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Hufflepuff, each had a specific vision for the wizarding school. They disagreed on which values and characteristics their students should have, and ended up creating four houses in which the students would be sorted. You know the drill: the sorting hat looks through your mind, and puts you where you belong depending on what traits you have. Sometimes, like for Harry, the choice isn't easy, since many wizards have several houses' traits.

Question 4

Which job does Snape really want?

Severus Snape was definitely not the nicest man. If we're being honest here, the fact that he was brave and was working as a double agent to bring down Voldemort shouldn't erase the fact that he was absolutely horrible towards Harry - just because he didn't like his father. Snape especially takes it out on Harry in his first potions class - the class he teaches, and the one Harry is worst at. But which class does Snape really want to teach?

Question 5

How do the first years get to Hogwarts?

Ah, Hogwarts. Such a magical place (obviously) to go to. Of course, the means of getting there are just as magical. Every year, the students arrive at the castle in different ways. Though they all take the Hogwarts Express from King's Cross Station in London, the journey from Hogsmeade to the castle varies. For the first years, the tradition is an initiation of sorts, a unique experience and an introduction to the world they're about to enter.

Question 6

Who's the head of Gryffindor?

At Hogwarts, every house has a Head Boy and Head Girl, as well as prefects - titles that Hermione and Ron (as well as his brother Percy) got to enjoy. However, each house also is headed by a professor of the school who was also in that house during their time as a student. They, of course, match the desired characteristics for a person of that house, and serve as a role model and disciplinary force. Who is head of Gryffindor?

Question 7

What's the name of the famous tree on campus?

This tree has a lot of history. It's really, really old - like, seriously, older than Dumbledore - and is very special. Of course, this isn't just a normal tree, it's a tree with special magical powers. It's basically alive, actually. Ron and Harry have a really close call with this Willow when they land in it in the Weasley's magic flying car in second year. You know, that time where they couldn't get through the wall to platform 9 and 3/4?

Question 8

How does Harry meet Hermione?

Harry and Hermione are the most unlikely of friends, but they really balance each other out. Hermione is perfectly put together, organized, always on top of her work, and ahead of the game. I mean, she knows spells before even getting to Hogwarts and is muggle born! Harry, on the other hand, is a rule breaker, a bit disorganized and haphazard, and doesn't know the first thing about magic when he arrives. Nevertheless, their friendship is so precious and perfect.

Question 9

What monster do Ron, Hermione and Harry face in the bathroom?

We all knew that Harry, Ron and Hermione were destined for great things, but no one expected they'd fight off monsters as early as their first year! I mean, these kids are 12 and they're already somehow using basic spells to fight the fight? Thank goodness they had access to magic, otherwise they'd be long gone. This instance is especially notable because it's the first time the three work together to overcome the problem in front of them, and leads to their amazing friendship.

Question 10

What's the spell that opens locks?

What a nifty thing magic is! Imagine having the power to open locks! In the muggle world, being able to do that must be amazing. In the wizarding world, I'm sure they have some sort of impenetrable charm to close doors. In any case, this charm to open locks comes in handy for Harry, Ron and Hermione, and is an elementary skill for young wizards. They use this spell as early as first year to investigate where the philosopher's stone is.

Question 11

What do Harry and Ginny name their eldest child?

Oops, spoiler alert! Well, it's not really a spoiler anymore, but yes, Harry and Ginny end up married at the end of the seven books! Their relationship was definitely a slow burn, but it wasn't random. Who would've thought that Ginny's first year crush on Harry, and Harry's heroics in the Chamber of Secrets would lead to such a pure, cute relationship and ultimately a marriage? After all's said and done, Ginny and Harry have multiple kids who end up going to Hogwarts as well!

Question 12

What's the name of Albus Dumbledore's brother?

No one really talks about this (least of all Dumbledore), but there's more to the Dumbledore family than just the Hogwarts headmaster himself. As a matter of fact, in the last book, we learn that Albus has a brother and once had a sister. His brother isn't famous, though, and he and Albus had a very difficult relationship. He's most known for owning the Hog's Head Inn in Hogsmeade and offering refuge to Harry in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Question 13

What traits are associated with Slytherin?

Slytherin has a pretty bad name, thanks to a certain Tom Marvolo Riddle (aka Lord Voldemort) and his terrifying, dark antics. Many, many dark wizards have come from Slytherin. When Hogwarts was created, Salazar Slytherin wanted to teach students of pure blood - but clearly, some Slytherins took this a little too far. The valued traits aren't actually pure blood, but wizards like the Malfoys have complete disdain for witches and wizards who aren't of pure blood. Let's give Slytherin a better name and bring attention to their actual values!

Question 14

Which student is always blowing stuff up?

Ah, poor young wizards. Magic can be really hard to control, especially when you've only just been introduced to it. This young Scottish wizard especially struggles with keeping explosions under control...which weirdly only ever happens to him. How do you mess up a spell so bad that it not only fails, but actually blows up in your face? In any case, he slowly gets it under control, but it's definitely one of his defining traits. Who knows, maybe he has a bright future in pyrotechnics!

Question 15

Why does Harry go to wizard court?

It's the summer before Harry Potter's fifth year at Hogwarts, and he's now a well-established wizard, known for saving the school multiple times from the wrath of Lord Voldemort. Now, however, people think he's crazy because he's claiming Voldemort returned at the final of the Triwizard cup. Then, something crazy happens while Harry and his cousin, Dudley, are walking home, which leads Harry to use magic. Because he's underage, he's brought to court - but can you remember why he used magic?

Question 16

What animal is Harry's Patronus?

Dementors started patrolling Hogwarts in Harry's third year, when a prisoner - Sirius Black - escaped from Azkaban, the wizarding world's highest security prison. For some reason, dementors took a real liking to Harry and sucking the life out of his face - literally. Because of this, Remus Lupin, Harry's new defense against the dark arts professor, decided Harry should learn to protect himself with a Patronus charm. This spell is really difficult, but has the power to drive away and protect oneself from dementors.

Question 17

What was Voldemort's last horcrux?

Basically the focus of the last two books, Horcruxes are what made Voldemort especially difficult to bring down. I mean, seriously, the guy was so obsessed with immortality that he went through the trouble of killing people and hiding parts of his soul in different objects. Talk about paranoia, am I right?! On top of that, it's not like he made one or two; he made a whole seven. Which one was the last horcrux that, after destruction, would make Voldemort mortal?

Question 18

Who is the Half-Blood Prince?

Remember in sixth year when Harry Potter randomly got really good at potions? Remember when Dumbledore used Harry's fame to lure out Professor Slughorn and get him back at Hogwarts as potions teacher? Sixth year was crazy. In the meantime, Harry joined the potions class really late and used an old, tattered textbook from the cupboard, which was owned by someone called the Half Blood Prince. Turns out, the book was chock-full of notes in the margins which made Harry the best potion-maker in class!

Question 19

What did Harry take during the Triwizard tournament to breathe underwater?

Wow, this quiz is just full of throwbacks! Let's take it back to year four, when poor Harry Potter, who'd already been through so much in the last three years (saving the Philosopher's Stone, defeating Tom Riddle in the Chamber of Secrets, and dealing with Dementors) gets thrown into the Triwizard Cup. In the task that requires contestants to swim underwater in the lake to save one of their loved ones, Harry used something special to be able to breathe underwater.

Question 20

What kept happening to students in Harry's second year?

Imagine being literally thirteen years old and actually having to save your entire school from the wrath of some psycho Slytherin who's claiming to be the heir of Salazar Slytherin himself. That was Harry's life in his second year at Hogwarts, because apparently, this issue was way out of the control of the actual adults. After receiving a message (written in blood) that the Chamber of Secrets had been reopened, a curious thing began happening to muggle-born students of the school...

Question 21

What kind of dragon did Harry have to face off with in third year?

Is there literally anything (or beast) that Harry hasn't fought off successfully? We've been through mermaids, dementors, Voldemort himself, and a troll already... you'd think that would be enough. Unfortunately, realism isn't appropriate in a story that's literally about a wizard. He wouldn't be very heroic if he just fought off one troll and then had a normal life, would he? In any case, Harry came really close when he had to steal a golden egg from a dragon during the Triwizard Cup

Question 22

How does Harry catch his first snitch?

It's obviously not enough that Harry is destined for great things (literally, it's prophesied), or that he saves the Philosopher's stone, or that he's famous and has already done enough by surviving the death curse and Voldemort. He just had to break all the records by becoming the youngest seeker like, ever. And, of course, in his first, nerve-wracking game of Quidditch, Harry manages to catch the snitch and win the game for Gryffindor...did you expect anything else from him?

Question 23

Which houses have their common rooms in the basement?

Let's be completely honest, here. Some houses at Hogwarts got a much better end of the deal than others. Like, the fact that two houses have their common rooms and dormitories in towers, while the other two have to live underground year-round is the saddest thing I've ever heard. Do they even have windows? It's probably so dark, and we all know that sunlight is critical for some sort of happiness. Guess it doesn't make much of a difference, anyways - Great Britain is always rainy.

Question 24

When does Harry start seeing Thestrals?

In case you're not a seasoned Harry Potter fan, you might need a quick reminder of what Thestrals are. Basically, they're terrifying horses of the dead. If you watch Game of Thrones, they're comparable to the horse the white walkers ride. These magical beasts are winged, meat-eating, skeletal horses that are gentler than they seem, and their hair can be used in wands. What's most special about them, however, is that they are invisible to everyone - everyone except those who have seen death.

Question 25

Who finds the room of requirement?

It's fifth year, and Hogwarts is under siege by the Ministry of Magic. They're completely paranoid that Harry and Dumbledore have been spreading lies about Voldemort's return, and are in complete denial. Stupid, right? In any case, Dolores Umbridge is basically running the show, and the students are no longer receiving practical defense training. So, to be able to defend themselves, they create Dumbledore's Army under Harry's leadership. They end up practicing in the Room of Requirement, which is perfectly hidden and secret for them.

Question 26

What spell is Harry's go to?

Harry is a simple boy and a simple wizard. And you know what, simplicity often pays off. Who needs a fancy curse or one of the forbidden curses to defeat their opponents? Not Harry. Though he doesn't always play by the rules, Harry usually stays away from the really bad curses and swears by the basic spells he was taught in defense against the dark arts. In any case, it seems to work for him, because he comes out alive at the end of all this!

Question 27

What shape does Hermione's patronus take?

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is kind of a depressing book, just because everyone thinks Harry is completely crazy and a liar, and because Dolores Umbridge takes over Hogwarts. And because Defense Against the Dark Arts is hijacked. And because Dumbledore is kind of ignoring Harry. Okay, it totally sucks. But on the bright side, this year is an opportunity for the students to really band together and learn from each other. And learn, they did! Most of them even got their patronuses!

Question 28

What's special about Harry's wand?

The wand chooses the wizard. Must be a special feeling to have a wand that connects with you, and only you. Wands in the wizarding world are very personal, and using someone else's without having won it fairly means it won't respond perfectly. Most Hogwarts wizards get their wands at Ollivander's, as did Harry, Ron and Hermione. When Harry goes to get his wand, however, he ends up with something peculiar. Ollivander tells him why his wand is so special...

Question 29

What does Moody turn Malfoy into in fourth year?

Harry's fourth year wasn't only marked by the Triwizard Cup - it was also marked by the arrival of professor Moody. His name fits his face, because with that glass eye, is it really possible to see what his mood is? He's also an all-around grumpy man, although we shouldn't be too misled by the fact that in fourth year, he was literally possessed. In any case, in possibly the most hilarious scene of any of the books, Moody teaches Malfoy a little transfiguration lesson.

Question 30

Which Quidditch position does Ron play?

Though Harry is recruited for the Quidditch team as early as his first year, Ron is not so lucky. I mean, are we surprised? Ron doesn't really strike you as the bravest, most athletic guy ever. Which is surprising, because he did get sorted into Gryffindor. In the end, Ron goes to Quidditch tryouts and actually makes it! Despite his hesitation and uncertainty, he turns out to be a valuable addition to the team and cements his name in Gryffindor history.

Question 31

Why does Harry leave the Dursley's early in third year?

Remember that time when Harry wasn't even 14 yet and he stomped off from his home on his own to God knows where? This little runaway episode is also marked by the first time he ever sees his godfather Sirius Black in the form of a huge shaggy black dog. He takes the Knight Bus, which somehow knows to come pick him up, and finds himself at the Leaky Cauldron Inn. Pretty convenient, since his aunt and uncle literally suck.

Question 32

What was James Potter's animal nickname?

When Harry's father went to Hogwarts, he was really, really popular. Him and his friends, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were constantly up to no good, so it's fitting that they use these words as a password to the Marauder's Map. What's really cute, though, is that Sirius, James and Peter all became animagi so Remus wouldn't feel so lonely when he turned into a wolf every full moon. What was James' nickname?

Question 33

What's the name of Hagrid's dog?

Hagrid's persona wouldn't be complete without his trusty dog and his little hut on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. From the beginning, Hagrid has this huge, slobbery dog, who he even sends with Harry and Draco when they're punished and have to go into the Forest. Funnily enough, such a huge imposing dog isn't actually brave at all. Guess he wouldn't have made it to Gryffindor! In any case, he's a cute addition to life at Hogwarts, and a testament to Hagrid's love for animals.

Question 34

Where does Hagrid come get Harry for the first time?

This part of the story is totally random. If you were getting bombarded by owls and magical mail, you'd move homes, right? Dursley was so adamant to get rid of any trace of magic and wizardry in his family's live - remember, they're "perfectly normal, thank you very much" - that he would actually go elsewhere instead of just sending Harry to Hogwarts. Doesn't make much sense, since they seem to hate him and want to get rid of him anyways.

Question 35

Who runs Dumbledore's Army while Harry is away?

This question is a tribute to all the students who lost their lives serving Hogwarts and the good of the wizarding community. J.K Rowling really ruined our lives by killing some of those people off. But these wizards, whether from Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin or Gryffindor, were all extremely courageous. They continued to come together as Dumbledore's Army as any semblance of resistance and solidarity they could find. While Harry was off hunting horcruxes, however, someone else had to take over...
