If You Can't Name These Marvel Movies, Don't Watch Infinity War

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is only a few months away from its biggest movie ever: Infinity War! This massive team-up flick will bring together Marvel heroes from all over the galaxy against one foe: Thanos, The Mad Titan. It promises to be an absolutely epic adventure, and is so massive that it will be split across two separate films (one in 2018 and the other in 2019), and fans can't wait to see this culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, Avengers: Infinity War is also going to be a challenge for those fans who haven't been keeping up with every development of the MCU so far. With dozens of characters referencing events from throughout the MCU's long history (ten years of movies!), plenty of moviegoers have started to brush up on their Marvel movie knowledge ahead of the Infinity War release. Even true fans are reminding themselves of everything that has happened across the big and small screen since the superhero renaissance began, just so they don't miss out on a single detail or Easter Egg.

Are you one of those who has seen every movie at least twice, and knows the back catalogue inside and out? Or are you the kind of fan who might be leaning over and whispering questions to your friends when it comes to seeing the Avengers and their friends take on the Mad Titan? Take this quiz to see whether you are ready for the next big Marvel adventure!

Question 1

Which was the first movie in the MCU?

This was the movie that started it all! Starring Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, a billionaire playboy who makes his money selling weapons to the military. But when he is kidnapped by terrorists, he has to find a way to escape and save his life, using parts of the very same weapons that he sells. This journey from party playboy to brand new hero was the film that launched the MCU in 2008, and is still one of the best in this comic universe.

Question 2

Which movie introduced Asgard?

Once the MCU was getting established on Earth, it was time to switch things up, with the introduction of an entirely different realm... and a hero that was once known as a God. Chris Hemsworth stars in this flick about an Asgardian hero who is banished from Asgard and sent to Earth to try and become worthy of his hammer, Mjolnir, once again. It also introduced the world to the best love-to-hate-him villain in the MCU: the trickster, Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

Question 3

Which movie will see Hope Van Dyne suit up?

We've already met Hope Van Dyne in the earlier Ant-Man, but this movie will be her first time suiting up as a real hero: as we saw at the end of Ant-Man, when she was given an updated version of the super-suit that her mother wore. This movie will presumably also see a little more of the spark between Hope and Scott Lang, as the two partner up to use their shrinking powers to fight evil and save the day.

Question 4

In which movie was Thor's hammer destroyed?

Thor is back again for another major adventure... and one that doesn't begin well for our Asgardian hero. Hela, his secret sister, appears to try and take over Asgard, and smashes his hammer, Mjolnir. Then, Thor is dumped on Sakaar, a planet where he is forced to take part in gladiatorial battles with the Hulk... things aren't looking good, until he is able to create a new team (including Loki!) to go back and save Asgard from his evil sister.

Question 5

Which movie will take fans to Wakanda?

Before Avengers: Infinity War hits screens, there will be one more Marvel movie to come... and this one will take audiences to the African nation of Wakanda. Continuing the story of characters that we met in Captain America: Civil War, this film is set to be released in February, and will see the new king of Wakanda teaming up to take on new foes who see the death of the old King as a perfect time to start causing trouble...

Question 6

Which movie gave us a better look at Peter Parker's life?

After years of being adapted by a different studio, a right-sharing deal finally paved the way for this first Spider-Man solo movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After his cameo in Captain America: Civil War, Spidey returns home to try and balance his new superhero status with his schoolwork... and with the newest enemy to attack his city: The Vulture! A new look at a Marvel favorite, this movie was a huge hit, and fans loved seeing the web-slinger working with Tony Stark again.

Question 7

Which movie was set during World War 2?

Rounding out the solo movies that set up Marvel's big team was this 2011 offering set (almost entirely) during the Second World War. This flick centers on a sickly, skinny kid from Brooklyn who desperately wants to fight for his country... and gets injected with a super serum to make him the ultimate soldier. From reject to poster boy, he then becomes a hero when he goes up against the Nazi villain Red Skull and has to save the day.

Question 8

Which movie was the first MCU team-up?

In 2012, Marvel launched its first big team up with this movie, bringing together the characters from the previous four years of solo movies, as well as a couple of new faces. Black Widow and Hawkeye joined the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America and Thor to take on Loki and his army of Chitauri. They rally together to save the day, and then wrap it all up with some delicious shawarma, launching a new kind of Marvel movie as heroes come together.

Question 9

Which will be Marvel's first female-fronted movie?

It's not due to be released until 2019, but this will be Marvel's first female-fronted super-movie... introducing a new comic book superhero played by Brie Larson. With the film so far in the future, not a whole lot is known about the plot, but this blonde hero will presumably be saving the day both on Earth and in space, while wearing her signature blue, red and gold suit. We may even meet her mentor, Mar-Vell, who inspired her to become a hero.

Question 10

This movie introduced a different Bruce Banner.

Bruce Banner is now played in the MCU by Mark Ruffalo, but when the Marvel Cinematic Universe first began, the character was brought to life by a different actor: Edward Norton. Fans have forgiven the change of face by now, of course, and many have even forgotten that Bruce looked a little different in one film. This movie introduced the character with two personalities... one of whom is very, very angry (and very large, and very green!) and on the run from the law.

Question 11

Which movie centered on the Aether?

In the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans didn't know that some of the objects showing up were actually Infinity Stones - because we didn't know what the MCU was building towards quite yet! Question 12

Which movie did Bucky Barnes return in?

Captain America isn't the only hero who managed to make it into the modern day MCU, despite starting their story decades ago. In this follow up to Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve Rogers meets an old friend of his from the Second World War: Bucky Barnes. This movie also saw the fall of SHIELD to HYDRA (or the revelation that SHIELD fell long ago!), and a huge shake-up to the Marvel Universe - with an even bigger one on the way.

Question 13

What was Tony Stark's second movie?

Tony Stark returns in this 2010 hit that saw his journey as a superhero get a little bit more complicated. This hero isn't too concerned about having a secret identity (or concerned at all!), and that starts to make life difficult... and at the same time, Whiplash has decided to try and take on the hero himself! While not quite as good as the original (what sequel ever is?), this movie was a great third installment in the growing MCU.

Question 14

Which was the first Marvel TV show?

Marvel has spread to the small screen, with multiple series that continue the adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - but this was the very first of the MCU series. It's still going strong now, telling the story of the new Inhumans on Earth, and the rebuilding of SHIELD after it was revealed to be corrupt and under HYDRA control in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now, this sprawling universe continues to grow each season, and connects to the big screen MCU as well.

Question 15

Which movie introduced Peter Quill?

This movie was a huge success - which was a surprise to many, who didn't expect an intergalactic adventure about a green girl, a talking raccoon, and a sentient tree to be such a blockbuster smash! This movie launched the space-faring side of the MCU, and introduced the world to Chris Pratt's charming and hilarious Peter Quill, the leader of an all-new Marvel Team. This film also introduced the two daughters of the biggest big bad - Gamora and Nebula.

Question 16

Which movie introduced Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch?

This second Avengers movie moves the team forward, as they come up against a threat that one of the heroes inadvertently created. This flick also adds several new characters to the universe: Vision, an android merged with the Mind Stone, Scarlet Witch, a powerful enhanced human, and her twin brother, Quicksilver, a speedster. Sadly, not all of these made it through the film, though! This movie also set up the next several MCU adventures, although some fans felt that it was a bit too ambitious.

Question 17

Which movie turned a thief into a hero?

This movie was all about a little-known hero... and we do mean 'little'! Released in 2015, this is Marvel's first real heist movie, as a professional thief tries to go straight - and discovers that he'd much rather be stealing things for the good guys than working at Baskin Robbins. With an amazing shrinking suit and the ability to telepathically control insects, this criminal becomes a superhero... and surprises us all with how much fun he had along the way.

Question 18

Which movie pits hero against hero?

The Avengers are back together again... until the Sokovia Accords tear them apart! Following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the team is divided, and each side adds some new heroes to help fill out the ranks as Tony Stark and Steve Rogers go head to head. Bucky Barnes is also back again in this 2016 movie, where his friendship with Captain America looks set to tear the Avengers apart! In addition, this movie was the one to finally bring Spider-Man into the MCU.

Question 19

Which movie introduced magic to the MCU?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always been a little bit magical, but this was the movie that brought real 'magic' into the MCU - and the position of the Sorcerer Supreme! Question 20

What is the title of the Marvel/Netflix team-up series?

Marvel has now teamed up with Netflix for no fewer than six tv series, starting with Daredevil in 2015. Now, that universe has expanded to include Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher. In addition, four of these five series came together in 2017 for the first Marvel/Netflix team up, as this rag tag band of 'heroes' attempt to work together for the first time. This series may also continue, as the Marvel/Netflix grows, so a second season may be on the way.

Question 21

Which movie saw Star-Lord meet his father?

In the second outing for this intergalactic team, Peter Quill finally learns who his father is, and why he was lifted from the Planet Earth in the first place. The team also gets some new faces, as Mantis joins their ranks, and both Yondu and Nebula become allies along the way. But the one who steals the show in this Marvel movie? That could only be the dancing, badass, Baby Groot! This follow up to Guardians of the Galaxy was almost as good as the original...

Question 22

Which was Tony Stark's last solo movie?

Tony Stark is still front and center in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (for now...), but he hasn't had a solo movie since this one in 2013. This third Stark adventure saw our hero going up against the Mandarin, and included some truly impressive scenes with an entire fleet of super-suits! Despite all that, this is often seen as one of the weakest movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if not the weakest of them all. Oft-forgotten, what was this movie's name?

Question 23

Which Marvel TV show is about a female spy?

Marvel may not have a female-fronted solo movie just yet, but it has had a female fronted tv series! This show was a spin-off of Captain America: The First Avenger, set post World War II as Agent Peggy Carter attempts to be taken seriously as an agent now that the war is over. With a little help from the mustachioed Howard Stark, Peggy must prove her worth, and become a founder of the original SHIELD agency, all with perfect lipstick.

Question 24

Which movie will bring all the MCU heroes together?

This is an easy one... what's the name of the movie that is going to bring all the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe together to battle the Mad Titan himself? As Thanos comes to Earth to try and collect the remaining Infinity Stones and complete the Infinity Gauntlet, every hero must rise against him... because if he should get the gems together, he would have near-unlimited, universe destroying power! This is the first of the two-part ultimate Marvel team up.

Question 25

Which Marvel series is set on the moon?

One of Marvel's most recent TV offerings, this series was that rare thing for the comic powerhouse - a total flop! The show attempted to introduce one of the comic teams who live on the Moon in the city of Attilan, as they are forced to flee to Earth. As the Royal Family search for each other in Hawaii, they find new friends - but must still return home to Attilan to overthrow Maximus, who has taken control of the throne!
