No matter your age, or politics there are somethings that a majority of females have in common. One of them being a special place in their heart for a great film. There's just something about cozying up at home with a great flick, or going to the movies with the girls. The term "chick flick" was coined to describe types of films that are directed towards the female gender. These films contain emotion, or are relationship-based. They do not need to be romantic to be considered a "chick flick".
Derogatory slang aside, female audiences are also into action and adventure films. In recent years, there has been an increase in strong, female led films, and there is no sign of that trend stopping anytime soon. There are men that also enjoy these films but they may have not watched as many as the average female nor watched as many times.
So grab your girl gang, fix a cocktail, and see how well you do on this quiz. Pick the name of the movie based on the picture and synopsis. If you can name at least 50% of these movies, you are definitely a girl, or have a well rounded taste in movies.

Teen Angst
This John Hughes classic hit theaters in 1984. It starred Molly Ringwald as "Samantha". Her parents have forgotten it's her birthday and to top it off she has a major crush on the hottest guy in school, "Jake Ryan". Adding comedy to the mix is "Farmer Ted", who is trying to work his way up the popularity ladder. The film also had a great soundtrack that set the mood of teen angst, and a very special final scene between Samantha and Jake.
Pink, Pink, Pink
This film starring Reese Witherspoon hit theaters in 2001 and had subsequent sequels thanks to its box office mojo. "Elle Woods" (Witherspoon) decides to follow her ex-boyfriend to law school. In this funny film, she quickly figures out that there is more to life than just her looks. The saying, "don't judge a book by its cover", is a theme throughout the movie. Elle is granted admission to Harvard after a creative submission. It's a feel good movie that is great for a girls night.
Time to Blush
Ok peeps, this film had to be on our list. Love it or hate it, this movie based on a popular book, has a huge following. Three films have now been done but in this question we're asking for the name of the first one. This movie hit theaters in 2015 and for those that were not aware of the books, the "red room" scenes caused many blushed faces. That's nothing to be ashamed of. Fans of the book, blushed just as much, if not more, thanks to the detailed descriptions of Christian and Anastasia's play dates.
Double Trouble
This 1991 classic, starred Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon. They played best friends that stick together through good times and the worst of times. Brad Pitt landed a small role in the film and boy did it put him on the watch list of ladies everywhere. Though many parts of the movie are funny, it also has extremely serious subject matter in it. These two gal pals are together until the end. The screenwriter of this film, Callie Khouri, is said to have based Geena Davis' character on her friend, country singer Pam Tillis
Um...Er....What was I saying?
First off, take a deep breath. If you've seen this movie then you are probably running scenes of through your head right now. You're welcome. This 2012 comedy/drama tells the story of male strippers in Tampa, Florida. The main role in the film is played by Channing Tatum, bringing him back to his dancing days. This movie was so popular with female audiences that a sequel was made in 2015. Both movies were definitely "girls night out" flicks. Following the films success, Channing Tatum, conceived and directed a live performance show that now runs at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.
When we fell for Heath Ledger
Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger starred in this updated adaptation of William Shakespeare's play, "The Taming of the Shrew". Julia played the part of "Katarina (Kat) Stratford, a senior that loves feminist prose and hates anything trendy. She lives with her sister, Bianca, and widower father. Bianca schemes with Cameron, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, to find someone to date Kat. Enter Patrick Verona (Ledger), this mysterious, bad boy accepts the challenge off dating Kat thanks to the money that Cameron is paying him. Soon enough though, Patrick falls for Kat and we can't help falling for Patrick Verona. This was the first mainstream American film for the extremely talented, late great Heath Ledger.
Grab the Tissues
This 1957 classic may be old but the story and performances will stand the test of time. The lovely Deborah Kerr and debonair Cary Grant star in this film about two strangers that meet on ship and fall in love. They are both on their way back to New York, where NIckie (Grant) is to marry an heiress, and Terry (Kerr) is returning to her long time boyfriend. They agree to meet each other in six months on top of the Empire State building.
King Leonidas
In this 2006 epic, we heard King Leonidas, played by Gerard Butler, yell to his men before battle, "Spartans! Ready your breakfast and eat hearty...For tonight, we dine in hell!". Both men and women enjoyed this move, though for maybe not all of the same reasons. Gerard Butler spent and average of four hours a day for four months in the gym to get physically ready for this role. A young Michael Fassbender played the part of "Stelios", a Spartan warrior.
That is So Fetch
Tina Fey wrote the screenplay for this 2004 film adapted from a novel by Rosalind Wiseman. Before all of her legal woes, Lindsay Lohan broke away from her Disney roots as "Cady Heron". A girl that just transferred to a high school after living in Africa. As any high school goes, Cady wants to fit in and she does with "The Plastics", the most popular girls in school. The leader of this malicious group is Regina, played by Rachel McAdams.
There's No Crying in Baseball
This 1992 heart-warming film tells the story of the first female professional baseball league. During World War II, most jobs were filled by women due to the men being at war. The owners of baseball teams did not want to forgo games and decided to find women to play. Tom Hanks stars as "Jimmy Dugan", an alcoholic former star baseball player, that must manage the Rockford Peaches team. The teams catcher, Dottie, played by Geena Davis, is a strong, confident woman with a love of the game and a husband at war. It is a fun movie that also pulls at your heart strings.
A Girl Can't Read That Sort of Thing Without Her LIpstick
Starring the classy, talented and beautiful Audrey Hepburn, as Holly Golightly, this 1961 film introduced every girl their new favorite color. Set in New York City, it centers on Holly, a Manhattan party girl with wonderful accessories. She lives in a walk-up apartment where she meets Paul Varjak, played by George Peppard. The two become friends and eventually fall in love. Holly Golightly, like most women, has a special place in her heart for a particular store. Known for its gorgeous, regal items and trademark logo and color, walking into the store is like a dream for Holly.
As If
This hilarious 1995 film centers around Cher played by Alicia Silverstone, her friends, and the fanciful lifestyle they have. The cast is adorable and relatable as they try to navigate high school and dating. It is a fun-filled coming of age movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. Whether you watched the movie when it first came out or streamed it on Netflix for the first time, chances are you relate to one of the characters. The film also stars, Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison and many more talented actors and actresses.
Navarre & Isabeau
A love story to stand the test of time and remind us that we all love a good fairy tale. Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Broderick star in this medieval film about a man and a woman that can never be together because of a curse. Matthew Broderick's character, Mouse, adds humor to the film with his antics and frequent conversations with himself in the 3rd person. This movie has action, adventure, knights, beautiful animals, and an amazing love story.
Maybe "Okay" Will Be Our "Always"
This 2014 tear jerking love story is so sweet and pure that it melts our hearts. The story follows girl, who has leukemia and her struggles with life, finding unexpected love, and gut wrenching loss. The film is very well written and audiences feel connected with the characters as they attempt to make every moment last. The chemistry between Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort is almost palpable. The film is based on a best selling book written by John Green.
Tell Me About It Stud
A summer romance is rekindled in this 1978 musical starring, Olivia Newton John as "Sandy", and John Travolta as "Danny". The two fell for each other over the summer but Sandy had to return to Australia. At a school bonfire Danny is surprised to see Sandy, since he thought she was gone. Sandy and Danny are from two very different social backgrounds, and they both try to change to be like each other so that they can be together. The music is fun, catchy and will most definitely get stuck in your head.
Party Like A Mother
This 2016 R rated film was written by Scott Moore and John Lucas as an homage to their wives. It stars, Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn, Kristen Bell, Christina Applegate, and Jada Pinkett Smith. The film follows "Amy" (Kunis) and her two best friends "Carla" (Hahn) and, "Kiki" (Bell), as they try to navigate motherhood, full time jobs, and social expectations. The ladies ditch their responsibilities and decide to have some long overdue me time. It is hilarious and a bit graphic at times. The film did so well that a sequel was made that came out only one year later.
Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner
Regardless of your gender or sexual preference, odds are that you've seen this movie. If not then you are missing out. Starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, as two unlikely, star crossed lovers, that fall for each other through dancing. Baby (Grey) steps in as partner for Johnny Castle (Swayze), when his partner gets sick from a procedure. The music and dancing in this film are amazing. Swayze shows off his natural dancing talents and made ladies all across the globe fall for him. Every lady wants to have the dance that Baby and Johnny shared at the end of the film. Major bonus points for any guy that can do that dance.
Dancing in Heaven
A very young Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt star in this coming of age film about dancing, love, and growing up. It follows "Janey" (Parker), and her pursuit to become a dancer on television despite her father's strict, militant rules. With the help of her best friend "Lynne" (Hunt), Janey is selected for the finals of a televised dance contest with her bad boy partner "Jeff", played by Lee Montgomery. This is a fun movie that makes you laugh and makes you wanna dance. There's even a scene where you can see Robert Downey Jr. playing the part of "Punk Party Crasher", before hit it big.
Frankly My Dear
This film holds the title of the oldest on in our quiz, as it was released in 1939. It is nearly 4 hours long and if box office tickets were adjusted for inflation, it would be the top-grossing movie of all time. Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable lead an ensemble cast in this Civil War and Reconstruction Period era romance. It won 8 Oscars, including the first nomination and win for an African-American, Hattie McDaniel, for her role as "Mammy".
I Read To Her, She Remembers
Based on the best selling book by Nicholas Sparks, this 2004 film was a hit with audiences. It's one of those films that makes you feel things in your gut, the love, the pain, and the angst of the characters. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling play "Allie" and "Noah". Two people from opposite sides of the track that fall in love with each other. This film illustrates how regardless of social differences, true love always finds a way. The pureness of the story and performance by the entire cast will leave you in tears.
I'll Wait For You. I'll Wait For You Forever.
It took 17 years for producer, Edward Zwick, to get this story up on the big screen and we're glad he was persistent. It is based in the early 1900s and follows the story of three brothers and their father living in remote Montana. Loyalty, love, family, and destiny are tested in this dramatic story. Brad Pitt, who plays "Tristan", gave a charming, heartfelt performance throughout the film. The film also stars, Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn, Julia Ormond, and Henry Thomas.
Slippery Little Suckers
Garry Marshall directed this 1990 hit romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Vivian (Roberts) is hired by the wealthy Edward (Gere) to accompany him to some social events. Edward is a corporate raider, whose life is his work. Vivian begins to crack his stiff demeanor and teaches him to laugh. Eventually the two fall for each other but things go awry and Edward must choose between business and love. The film has comedy, drama and romance and grossed almost half a billion dollars worldwide.

Whether you think there was plenty of room on the door or not, this movie was epic. This film was #1 at the box office for a record 15 consecutive weeks, from December 19, 1997 to April 2, 1998. It also holds the title of the first film to be released on video (DVD/VHS) while it was still in movie theaters. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet gave stellar performances as Jack and Rose aboard the ship. The film starts in present day and is told through flashbacks.
Love You Till The End
Audiences experienced a roller coaster of emotions with this 2012 film, starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler. It tells the story of "Holly" (Swank) as she attempts to go on following her husband's death. This long awaited big screen follow up to the same hit television series, is a girl gang must watch. The film picks up where the series ended, giving us an update on Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda. This sexy, intelligent, funny, romantic movie gave fans more of the Mr. Big storyline with Carrie, as they move in together in an unbelievably New York City apartment. Just like the series, the movie is filled with cocktails, fashion, friends, and yes, some sex too. Thanks to its success a sequel was made.
As You Wish
This cult classic starring Robin Wright and Cary Elwes, continues to grow in its popularity with fans. If you're breathing, chances are that you've heard a quote from this film at some point. It tells the story of a maiden and stable boy that fall in love, and face a menagerie of characters and creatures along the way. Wesley (Elwes) must rescue his love from her unwanted marriage to Prince Humperdinck. The film begins with a grandfather reading a story to his sick grandson, played by a very young Fred Savage.
Dirty Harriet
Sandra Bullock stars as the rough around the edges, "Gracie Hart", in this hilarious comedy. Hart must go undercover at a beauty pageant to prevent a group from bombing an event. This movie has the always fun to watch makeover of Hart, as well as a crash course in manners and pageantry by Victor Melling, played by Michael Caine. It also stars Benjamin Bratt, Candice Bergen, William Shatner, and Ernie Hudson. Sandra Bullock has great comedic timing in this adorable, fun, romantic comedy.
I Would Rather Have 30 Minutes of Wonderful
Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field,Daryl Hannah, Dolly Parton, starred together in this lovingly sweet, and honest 1989 film. Set in the south, the cast of characters have the full accent and social stereotypes. It deals with friendship, love, loss, and tragedy. The cast delivers award winning performances and has amazing chemistry together. The rich banter between friends brings hilarity to this wonderful story. The movie was also remade in 2012 and starred Queen Latifah, Alfre Woodard, and Phylicia Rashad.
We Invented Post It's
Even though it's been almost 21 years since this movie came out, the comical situation of the two main characters, still brings laughs. It focuses on two ladies that have been best friends since high school and are returning home for a reunion. Embarrassed in high school and not wanting it to continue to adulthood, the two hatch a scheme to pretend to be successful business women. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor star in this musical masterpiece, set in 1899. Audiences are thrust into the colorful world of the Bohemian revolution in Paris, where Christian (McGregor) meets courtesan Satine (Kidman). They quickly fall in love but Satine is also desired by the Duke. A love triangle ensues and the two come up against insurmountable odds to stay together. Two Households Both Alike in Dignity, In Fair Verona
This 1996 Baz Luhrmann film brought audiences the classic tale of star crossed lovers, from William Shakespeare's play by the same name. It is based in present day but maintains the dialogue and speech of the play. The cinematography and score are unique and exciting. This film was something audiences had not seen before with its outrages, bright colors, and quick jumps between clips. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes played the young lovers from rival families, that find love at first sight, then quickly their world falls apart.

Friendship becomes the strongest bond between these women, no matter the direction the rest of their lives take. The film also talks about some of the struggles women face in today's world. Panicked by meeting her, Julianne calls her friend "George", played by the hilarious Rupert Everett, to pretend to be her fiancé. This movie will make you laugh, sing, and cry. The character of Julianne is very relatable and audiences can see themselves in either her or Michael's shoes.
Yeah, No Don't Put Me Down For Cardio
This film focuses on an all girls a cappella singing group in college. After failing at finals the year prior, the group adds some new freshman to their singing talents. One of the new recruits, "Beca", played by Anna Kendrick is an aspiring DJ that could care less about college life. After meeting a guy from the all boy a cappella group she decides to help the girls find a new look and new sound. This movie has gut busting humor and plenty of songs that make you want to sing along.

This 2006 film tells the story of two women that are strangers but that have very similar luck in love. They decide to exchange house for vacation to get away from things in their lives, and take a break. Friendships and romantic relationships blossom for both of them unexpectedly. Through their adventure in a new country, they learn what is truly important to them, and that it is okay to let go. Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black star in this heartwarming romantic comedy.
So You Want Me To Tell You The Story of My Life?
Anne Rice's best selling novel was brought to the big screen in this 1994 film starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, as "Louis" and "Lestat". The film is told from the point of you of Louis as he tells a reporter the story of his life. He was a plantation owner that lost the will to live following the death of his wife in childbirth. Lestat, a vampire looking for a companion, finds Louis and offers him the chance to be a creature of the night.
Behold Your Hero
This film tells the story of the second in line to Britain's throne and the princess of the feuding Irish falling in love and trying to find out how to be together. It is based on a story inspired by a Celtic legend. This medieval tale stars James Franco, Sophia Myles, Rufus Sewell, and a young Henry Cavill. Though the film did not perform well in theaters, it a favorite to watch amongst female audiences, given the time period, and forbidden love.
Courage Sometimes Skips A Generation
The movie is set in the 1960s at the time of the civil rights movement. A young writer decides to write a book that details the point of view of African American maids working for white families and the difficulties that they face from day to day. Unlikely friendships are forged and a new sisterhood emerges. The film based on a novel by Kathryn Stockett, has an unbelievable cast including: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, Cicely Tyson, and Allison Janney. Octavia Spencer would go on to win an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, for her work in the film.
Choose The Guy That's Gonna Make You The Better Girl
This fun action packed romance follows two spies who are best friends and unknowingly set up go on dates with the same girl, "Lauren", played by Reese Witherspoon. Once it is discovered the guys decide to see which one of them she will choose. This hilarious game of cat and mouse is made even more funny thanks to the resources at their disposal being CIA agents. Lauren likes both guys and is having a difficult time choosing and enlists the help of her comical, married friend. She eventually finds out that "Tuck", played by Tom Hardy, and "FDR", played by Chris Pine know each other.
Learn To Love Things. Forget About Thighs.

Mike puts her to the test to prove to her that they not only work but will help her find love. Of course the unexpected happens and they fall for each other.

Anne Hathaway stars as the naive and green, "Andy", that is hired to work for the powerful, sophisticated and bluntly honest, magazine executive "Miranda Priestly", played by Meryl Streep, as an assistant. Andy struggles in both her personal and work life. Miranda and Andy form an unlikely bond and help each other realize that life is made up of choices. In this film we get to see a makeover and a young woman find her strength and her way thanks to the relationship with Miranda.
I Thought You'd Never Guess
This star studded film follows a woman and her daughter that move to a small French Village. Juliette Binoche plays "Vianne", an outsider in a new town that raises more than eyebrows with a shop she opens. The uptight town considers it a sinful store that makes them question the morality of their community. Vianne and her daughter, "Anouk", soon become friends with some of the towns people and help them with their relationship struggles, through friendship and a little something else. This movie also stars Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, and Carrie Ann-Moss.

Julia Roberts stars as "Elizabeth Gilbert" in this film adaptation of an autobiographical book by Elizabeth Gilbert. It follows Elizabeth as she attempts to find herself, confused, and searching for what she really wants in life. Leaving her comfort zone far behind, she embarks on an adventure that will take her places she has never been before, mentally, physically and spiritually. Along her journey of self-discovery she meets a wide variety of people and cultures. Viola Davis, Billy Crudup, James Franco, and Javier Bardem.

This hot action film was the beginning of "Brangelina". It was a hit with all audiences. Watching a confident and strong woman that can fight just as well as the guys if not better is empowering. The chemistry between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in this film is off the charts, especially in a scene where they beat the crap out of each other. They play a married couple that are both spies but neither one knows that about the other. It is soon discovered when they are hired to take out the same mark.
