The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an incredible breath of fresh air for the series and Nintendo as a whole. For the first time ever, players were let loose in an open world exponentially larger than anything in previous Zelda games. Breath of the Wild released to almost unanimous positivity on March 3rd, 2017 for both the Nintendo Wii U and as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch. The game received 10/10’s from acclaimed gaming websites like IGN and Gamespot. The game’s release has spawned a brand new community of fans and first timers who have entered a magical world and become life long gaming fans. Breath of the Wild is slated to have a new piece of story-related DLC come out in the fall/winter of 2017 that promises fans a deeper look at some of the game’s characters.

Before we begin this epic quiz across the land of Hyrule, be warned: SPOILERS for certain elements of the game will be present!

A lot of the elements of the game have remained the same, but as the saying goes, “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” You of course play as the voiceless Link. Hyrule Castle is in the center of the map and its up to the player to defeat Ganon and save Princess Zelda from certain death.

When you first start the game, you play against red enemies and eventually encounter blue and silver level enemies in the more difficult parts of the game. When playing on Master Mode difficulty, every enemy is bumped up a level which means the enemies in the starting area would be blue instead of red!

Korok seeds are a hot commodity in the land of Hyrule. The player earns the seeds by completing somewhat random and menial tasks to appease the small Korok species who you might remember from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. With those Korok seeds, its possible to upgrade Link’s various equipment slots, meaning that the player can carry more weapons, shields, or bows. Hint: With as big of a map as the one in Breath of the Wild, you can find a Korok just about anywhere you look in the game.

The Gerudo Desert is a huge chunk of the south eastern portion of Hyrule and is as deadly as it is hot. In order to defeat this beast, it is up to Link to find a way inside and slay the Thunder Blight Ganon enemy that awaits inside.

Memories play an important role in the overall story of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Since the game takes place 100 years after Calamity Ganon’s appearance, Link has lost some of his memory due to his long stay in the Shrine of Resurrection. At a certain point in the game, Link is able to use the Sheikah Slate to locate certain memory locations which then requires the player to find those locations based only on a photo to unlock a past memory cutscene.

No that's not the Thing from the Fantastic Four, but this creature reminded me of Shadow of the Colossus in the best possible way. What was once thought to be a small exposed rock rises from the ground in a flurry of dirt and rubble as Link comes face to face with absolute destruction at the hands of this stone menace. The easiest way to defeat this beast is by targeting the exposed obsidian on top of it and hitting it repeatedly.

What is the name of this Zora Champion?

For most, myself included, the Zora are the first race of Hylians I encountered in the game and subsequently led me to my first Divine Beast in the game. The Zora people can also be traced back to the original Legend of Zelda game for the NES and have seen quite a bit of change over the years. What used to be sea monsters have now evolved into slender fish creatures capable of incredible feats of aquatic athleticism and strength.

What clan is fond of assassinations and bananas?

On your journeys throughout Hyrule, it is important to be careful of strangers you may cross on your path to defeat Ganon. I am of course referring to the disguised citizens of the land who pretend to be normal, friendly people before changing into their assassins uniform and attempting to defeat Link. Whenever these baddies are defeated, they disappear in a cloud of smoke, leaving behind a smattering of rupees and some bananas, which honestly raises more questions than it answers.

The inclusion of the Rito people in the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild brought a much needed level of verticality to the series. Nothing quite matched the awe inspiring battle to get to the Divine Beast in the first place where you have to shoot its shields off before you are even able to land on its wings. Oh did I forget to mention that its a giant flying bird machine? Because it is, and it is awesome.

This is the first item that you get in the game after waking up in the Shrine of Resurrection. After getting this item, Link uses it to open doors and use runes as well as activating all of the shrines and towers across all of Hyrule. During the original development of the game, when it was originally slated only to release on the Wii U, the device was designed to mimic the Wii U gamepad so players could use it as a connection to the game world.

Hint: The best way to take this beast down is by aiming for its eye.

These enemies can pose quite a threat in the game as they always pop up at the worst possible times, usually when you are climbing some large obstacle. They are also prone to travel in large packs which can make for an even more threatening foe as you travel across Hyrule only to be ambushed by a swarm of these guys. The best way to handle them is to try and hit one with a fire or bomb arrow to take out the rest of the flock.

What happens during a blood moon?

The blood moon is one of the more mysterious elements of the game. Resembling the dark amber and red colors of a Harvest Moon, the Blood Moon is a nefarious event that is no doubt linked to Ganon. It will occur once every few nights and challenge Link, especially if playing on Master Mode. Thankfully, the Blood Moon will only last one night and you can even skip it if you are at a campfire or have some other way to wait out the game's clock.

In the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, just about every enemy is a danger to Link, especially in the early hours of the game. These octopus enemies are no exception considering the fact that they can plant themselves in the water and fling projectiles at Link with pinpoint accuracy. It is insane just how accurate these guys are. Did you know: For the on land octopi, you can throw a rusty sword at them as they inhale, and the sword that they spit back will be polished and new!

He might look like Peanut from a Jeff Dunham stand-up special, but this pint sized monster trader is actually one of Link's greatest allies. Across your journeys, you'll slay hundreds of monsters and get various items and parts that you then exchange to this character for coins to use in his store. It's a pretty clever marketing scheme and super beneficial because some of the items that you can get from this character are aesthetically really cool but also devastatingly strong.

What other game has Beedle appeared in?

Beedle is a friendly merchant who you can find in just about any horse stable or shelter in the game where he is ready and willing to sell you the goods you need to survive. Whenever I see him, I always make sure to stock up on arrows, because I never fail to run out of them at the worst possible times. With that in mind, try to remember what other Zelda game features the character Beedle in it as a salesman.

This flower plays an integral role in the overall story of the game and is a metaphor for Princess Zelda herself and the struggles she has faced throughout her life. Once onboard, Link can manipulate the angle of the bird's flight path to solve a complex series of challenges before taking on the Wind Blight Ganon that awaits for him.

The night I went to get Breath of the Wild was the same night I wanted to buy a Nintendo Switch so I waited in line at Walmart with one of my best friends to secure a console. Sadly the store only had 20 switches and we were the 21st and 23rd person in line so no dice. We searched the area for hours until we found a Walmart that had some leftover from the midnight rush! What night was this?
