How Well Do You Know Call Of Duty's Zombies Mode?

1.4K Shares

The Call of Duty series gets a lot of flack for many valid reasons. However, that doesn't mean that there aren't good things to say about it. One aspect of the games that still remains fun to this day is the Zombies mode. Now I'm not talking about Exo Zombies or whatever the heck that mode is in Infinite Warfare. I'm directly referring to Treyarch's take on it, with Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo, and Richtofen. This is the mode that keeps people coming back for more.

Despite Black Ops III no longer being the most recent Call of Duty on the market, Treyarch is providing what seems to be the last bit of DLC for the title- and it's all related to the Zombies mode. Featuring 8 older maps that have all been remastered for current gen graphics, it is a celebration of everything that went into the Zombies Mode and a reminder of why people loved it in the first place.

It also makes us realize just how much the mode has grown since it started out as an easter egg in World at War. There is a lot to the Zombies Mode these days, and that alone makes it worthy of a challenge.

How well do you know Call of Duty Zombies?

Question 1

Which of these maps featured a bus system?

Putting a bus into Call of Duty Zombies might've seemed like a good idea on paper, but was much worse in execution. The map that it was on was split up into sections. The only way to get to the different ones was by catching the bus- you couldn't just walk there or you would die. This turned out to be frustrating as it was difficult for players to stick together, and anybody who was downed in a separate area was almost guaranteed to die.

Question 2

Which of these maps didn't feature Dempsey, Takeo, Nikolai, and Richtofen?

Treyarch eventually made characters to headline their Zombies mode. They used them to tell a convoluted story that would continue through all of their games. However, these four soldiers wouldn't be the only ones playable in the Zombies series. There were numerous times where other characters would be used to either tie into the Zombies or narrative or be a fun distraction from the crazy plot that was going on. Some people loved the other characters, and other people longed for familiarity more.

Question 3

What was the name of the first map in the series?

When Call of Duty Zombies first began, it was a reward for finishing the campaign for Call of Duty World at War. Nobody expected it to become as popular as it did. Because of this, this little map that started it all has become iconic and serves as a huge nostalgia trip for fans of the Zombies series. The map featured a small building with only four different rooms. There were no perks, a few guns on the wall, and the Random Box.

Question 4

What was the function of the Space Monkeys in Ascension?

After the Hellhounds were introduced early in the series, Treyarch decided to move on to bigger and better things. Constantly, they were coming up with new enemy types to make people shake in their boots (no matter what guns they were using). In the map Ascension, Space Monkeys were used instead of Hellhounds. These undead apes were extremely small, and thus, difficult to hit. What made it worse is that they did more damage than just attacking players and downing them.

Question 5

Which map takes place in two skyscrapers?

One thing that Treyarch hasn't run out of are environments for the Zombie maps. Each one takes a style all its own, featuring unique settings and challenges to overcome. One map took place on two fallen and crumbling skyscrapers. Fighting off the zombies becomes more difficult than ever because you also have to worry about maintaining your footing on solid ground. That said, the map is still quite excellent and fun- it remains one of the more popular Zombies maps.

Question 6

Finish this quote: "You must ascend from..."

When Zombies first came out in World at War, there were subtle teases that made us wonder what Treyarch was planning with the mode. Throughout the first map, there were interesting writings on the walls that would feed into the rest of the series. For example, in the first room, there was a phrase on the wall that told the players that they must ascend from something. It was interesting, considering that there was no way out of the map at all, but only stairs.

Question 7

What is this creature?

I would caution those of you wanting to jump into Black Ops II Zombies. Odds are that you will come in direct contact with this massive creature. It's not easy to take down and will likely take you out in one hit if it gets close. In order to deal with it, you must shoot down each of its three eyes as they open. Once you do that, you're home free. However, you'll be dealing with hordes of zombies at the same time.

Question 8

What was the Wonder Weapon in the map, "Five"?

The map Five is also one of the most infamous maps in Zombies history. It's cramped, doesn't allow any good strategies for survival and features many tough corners that make it easy to get swarmed by zombies. However, it does deserve credit for introducing a new Wonder Weapon into the fold (love it or hate it). While the gun itself isn't the most effective, its instakill function was fun to watch from start to finish. It later appeared in other Zombies maps.

Question 9

How do you reach the Pack a Punch in Gorod Krovi?

Gorod Krovi is a crazy map that is the result of the timeline going awry. It is controlled by an evil version of Nikolai, and because of this, all kinds of insane things are happening all at once. On top of worrying about Zombies, you'll have to accomplish a specific set of tasks before you can even unlock the method to get to the Pack a Punch machine. That said, it's a purely satisfying experience if you're going through it for the first time.

Question 10

Other then protecting you from zombie hits, what does the Dragon Shield do?

In Black Ops II, Treyarch loved shoehorning in collectible parts. While they seemed to be pointless at the beginning, they came with some useful results if you managed to grab them all. In Gorod Krovi, the parts resembled a dragon's face. When you put it all together, you were rewarded with the Dragon Shield (aptly named the Guard of Fafnir). This shield, while on your back, protected you from any Zombie hits and would do the same for your front when equipped.

Question 11

Where was the Pack a Punch machine located on Moon?

Moon is one of the hardest maps in the Zombies series. You start out in a small section where zombies and Hellhounds continuously spawn with no set rounds. After you progress and get outside of the area, you have to slap on a space suit and get ready to fight low-gravity zombies. The Pack a Punch machine is simple to reach, yet difficult at every turn. Zombies will swarm you from all sides and there isn't a safe spot around.

Question 12

Which of these characters is obsessed with vodka?

Vodka is one of the strongest alcoholic beverages in the world (real vodka, that is). Naturally, Treyarch saw the opportunity to turn into a running gag for the Zombies series. Each character was created with their own personality so that they could be distinguished and remembered. They were also given something that they were obsessed with and made many references to it throughout the game. One of them had a particular love for vodka, drinking, and getting drunk at all.

Question 13

Which perk caused you to create an explosion when diving to prone?

It seemed that Treyarch had no shortage of ideas when crafting perks for the Zombies Mode. What started with just four different ones quickly evolved into a much larger number. One of the perks introduced in Black Ops I allowed players to create a medium-range explosion when diving prone off of a high enough ledge. The perk would also grant immunity to splash damage and getting hit by their own grenades. It was a must-have for those who owned a Ray Gun.

Question 14

In Shadows of Evil, the Pack a Punch is a portal.

In my opinion, none of the Zombies maps feel more different than Shadows of Evil. The only free map in Black Ops III, it takes place in a retro-style America, but with crazy rituals and powerful demons to stop you along the way. Getting to the Pack a Punch in this map is one of the most difficult methods in the history of the series. When you finally get to it, though, you'll be treated with an insane room full of Gateworms and walkable ledges.

Question 15

George Romero was an enemy in the Zombies Mode.

George Romero is one of the most legendary directors when it comes to horror movies. Being responsible for some of the best zombie movies of all time, any self-respecting film buff is going to know his name. Even the people at Treyarch have stated that they respect the man and are huge fans of his work. Some of the movies have even inspired the Zombies series as an entirety. But just how much inspiration from George Romero made it into Zombies?

Question 16

Who was the antagonist in Dead Ops?

On top of the Zombies Mode, Treyarch also used the formula to create something based off of an arcade mode of sorts. Dead Ops Arcade featured up to four players in a top-down perspective. They can tackle waves of enemies as they move through each world and level. All the while, the central antagonist would pop up at random occasions to taunt them, letting you know that he would have to be fought eventually. The final level sees the players taking him on.

Question 17

Who is the little girl that talks and laughs throughout the series?

In the Zombies series, there will be a sinister voice that states whatever power up you're collecting. On top of that, when the Random Box switches locations, you'll hear the laugh of a young girl. This wasn't done without intent, as it's part of a story. There was a little girl who was caught on the wrong side of the zombie experiment and became their leader of sorts. She was closely affiliated with Edward Richtofen and his friend, Dr. Maxis.

Question 18

Which map featured a mine cart that would transport from one location to another?

Along with making the zombies more difficult to take down, Treyarch also implemented useful mechanics that players could spend their points on to get ahead. There were electric barriers, trip mines, and even mine carts. One particular map had a mine cart that would take players across the entire location. While the map wasn't that big in practice, it was a surefire way to avoid a horde of zombies if you managed to get surrounded. A version of it was later used in Origins.

Question 19

The Gersch Device created black holes.

On top of creating unique weapons and perks, Treyarch also developed interesting special grenades. Some of them would temporarily distract zombies and others would set them on fire. The Gersch Device, in particular, was quite interesting. It was introduced in Ascension and hasn't really been used since. That said, it was an extremely useful grenade that needs to be implemented again in the series. Without giving away its function, it was like the Cymbal Monkey on steroids and a different color palette.

Question 20

What does Der Eisendrache mean in English?

Der Eisendrache is an interesting map that marked the return of the four central characters in Black Ops III. It takes place in a medieval castle that has long been abandoned. In that time, zombies and other creatures of the underworld have taken over. However, the use of special bows and staffs make it so you can effectively guard yourself against the hordes of the undead. Like most other zombie maps, though, Der Eisendrache has a meaning. What is it?

Question 21

It is impossible to upgrade the Apothicon Servant.

Of all of the Wonder Weapons in the game, none of them compare to the Apothicon Servant. This is a gun where you simply pull the trigger and win. Are you surrounded by enemies? Pull the trigger. Get cornered in a tight spot? Pull the trigger. The Apothicon Servant is a literal monster in your hands. It's tough to imagine what it would be like if Pack a Punched. After all, it's the greatest gun in the game and can't usually be obtained through normal means.

Question 22

What is the function of Mule Kick?

It wasn't long after Zombies began that Treyarch implemented the Perks-a-Cola system. These machines offered special drinks that would give you perks in the game. One of the perks introduced later in the series was called Mule Kick. It wasn't brought into the fold until the end of Black Ops I's life cycle. However, the developers liked it so much that it was integrated into every Zombies map in that game after it was created. Yes, even the ones that have no perks.

Question 23

Which Zombie map was the first one to have voice acting?

Because of the production value that goes into Call of Duty, Treyarch had the opportunity to flesh out their Zombies mode as much as they wanted. As time went on, the mode expanded more and more. For all of its features that were introduced later, the voice acting was something that began very early on in the series' history. It featured people scared in their situation, but strong enough to pick up a powerful gun and blast the living crap out of the undead.

Question 24

Shi No Numa pits you against spiders.

As I stated before, Treyarch came up with a lot of different enemy types when continuing the Zombies series. Eventually, the created giant spiders that would run around the map and shoot webs at all players. Because of their design, they brought with them a creepy factor to the mode. The spiders could also shoot door entrances to entangle them in webs and trap you. While not a bad addition to Zombies, they were no doubt a scary part that made you want to conserve your ammo.

Question 25

Which of these guns is not a Wonder Weapon?

In the Zombies series, there are extremely powerful weapons known as Wonder Weapons. These zombie killing machines can only be found in the Random Box and have some pretty low appearance rates. It all began with the Ray Gun in Nacht Der Untoten, but Treyarch has since created numerous Wonder Weapons with unique functions to keep you ahead of the zombie apocalypse. They're not always the most effective guns to use, but there's always a lot of excitement when you pull one.
