How Well Do You Know Buffy And Spike?

Pretty much anyone who has experienced love would agree it can often be a strange and confusing emotion. Even those who aren’t so lucky have probably seen several dozen examples that prove this on their favorite TV shows. For all its doom and gloom about regular impending apocalypses, Buffy the Vampire Slayer actually featured a plethora of brilliantly written relationships both positive and negative, almost all of which proved time again just how reckless and crazy love can be.

Of all the hopeless star-crossed lovers on the show, the pairing of Buffy Summers herself and evil vampire turned re-ensouled champion Spike is almost certainly the most complex. The two were immediate enemies when they met, followed by a three year stint as increasingly vitriolic rivals. In a complete shock to everyone watching, not to mention Spike and Buffy themselves, this overwhelming loathing implausibly developed into a highly destructive on again, off again relationship as romantic partners.

Because Spike was evil for centuries before meeting Buffy, and continued his villainous ways for about half of their relationship, some fans feel this particular vampire was never good enough for the Slayer. Others, however, think he was a better match for the girl in question than anyone else she ever dated, shipping the idea of “Spuffy” to the very end. Keep reading to take our quiz and find out how much you know about the doomed relationship between Buffy Summers and Spike.

Question 1

Where do Buffy and Spike meet?

A meet cute it was not. Unlike the average couple on TV who meets in some sort of adorable fashion, at the time Buffy met Spike, he had already begun a plot to kill her. Turnabout being fair play, Buffy retaliated as only the Slayer can, using whatever resources were around to bring everyone else to safety while also eliminating her new threat. Buffy was at least half successful since no one got hurt, but Spike also got away free of harm, allowing him to come back into her life time and again. Where did this first meeting take place?

Question 2

Who was Buffy dating when she first met Spike?

Whether Spike was the right guy for Buffy or not, one thing that’s for sure is he definitely was not the first guy to whom the Slayer ever opened her heart. In fact, Buffy dated at least three other men between when she met Spike and the time they actually started gravitating towards one another. Aside from those who support Spike and Buffy’s coupling, most fans seem to agree the Slayer’s best boyfriend was her first, coincidentally also the man she was with when she and Spike met. Who was he?

Question 3

Who was Spike dating when he first met Buffy?

Just as Buffy dated a few guys before getting romantic with Spike, the vicious vampire likewise had his fair share of female companions prior to the Slayer. Granted, Spike’s love life wasn’t always perfect, his whole destructive streak inspired in part by being rejected by a woman named Cecily. His next relationship, though a lot longer and at times extremely intense, wasn’t all that great, either. Sure, the two loved one another, but Spike’s girlfriend wasn’t always loyal, often cheating on him with Angel. Worse than that, she also happened to be insane. What was her name?

Question 4

Which Big Bad was the first to force Buffy and Spike to team up?

Despite instant hatred and a seriously antagonistic relationship, it actually doesn’t take Spike and Buffy all that long to find some common ground and start working together. Granted, their first partnership is destined to be temporary and could be described as tenuous at best, with both characters expecting it to be a one time thing as they take on a shared rival. Spike even promises Buffy that she’ll never see him again if she promises not to kill him when it’s over. That part obviously didn’t happen, but who were they about to fight when Spike said it would?

Question 5

What TV show allows Spike and Buffy’s mom to form an early bond?

It’s always an awkward experience to meet a romantic partner’s parents for the first time. Buffy and Spike weren’t dating yet when she introduced him to her mother, Joyce, but that didn’t stop things from being extremely uncomfortable for all involved parties. Granted, Joyce was kind of used to Buffy hanging out around much older men at that point, having already known about Angel. She and Spike also managed to find common ground through their shared love of a certain soap opera. What was it?

Question 6

Who was Spike dating when he realized his love for Buffy?

The fact Spike and Drusilla were both soulless vampires likely made their relationship even more doomed than Spike’s later coupling with Buffy. No matter how much the two loved one another, there was nothing stopping them from literally being evil demons, making any sort of true trust or faith pretty much impossible. Not that Spike learned much from this lesson, as his rebound between Dru and Buffy was yet another bloodsucker who might have been even wackier than his old love. This is probably why he started having romantic dreams about Buffy during their relationship. Who was she?

Question 7

True or False: Buffy and Spike were once engaged.

Everyone knows how the old song goes: first comes love, then comes marriage. Of course, that old rhyme conformed to traditional norms that Buffy the Vampire Slayer never quite adhered to, and it’s not like every romance in the real world follows that pattern to begin with. However, if Spike and Buffy were truly meant for one another, they would probably at least consider tying the knot. Given Spike’s strong capacity for romance, it’s easy to see him trying to put a ring on it, but would Buffy actually accept?

Question 8

Who is Buffy dating when Spike first realizes his feelings for her?

If there’s any upside for Spike when he unexpected starts falling in love with Buffy, it’s that the Slayer had at least broken up with Angel for good before he started trying to woo her. The downside was that she had also already moved on to her next partner, a much more normal human man. Granted, he happened to be a top agent for a secret governmental organization that hunted demons, but at least he wasn’t a vampire. He was also a generally kind person, unlike most of her other romantic interests. What was his name?

Question 9

Who casts the spell that makes Spike propose to Buffy?

Okay, so yes, Buffy and Spike were indeed engaged for one short episode, but unfortunately for those who ship Spuffy, it wasn’t quite as romantic as it probably sounds on paper. The brief engagement between Slayer and vampire actually took place when the two were still rivals, at a time Spike was being held captive at Giles’s apartment essentially for research purposes. Still harsh rivals, Spike only proposed to Buffy due to a bizarre spell, and she accepted for that exact same reason. Whose magic was responsible?

Question 10

What tragic incident started bringing Spike and Buffy together?

When most people fall in love, it’s a joyous occasion, so long as the center of their affections reciprocate the feelings in some small way. That obviously wasn’t going to be the case with Spike and Buffy, so as a preemptive measure, the second he started feeling infatuated, Spike decided to kick his plans to kill the Slayer into overdrive. Grabbing a shotgun, he rushed to Buffy’s house and discovered her…crying on the porch. Heartbroken, Spike put the gun down and asked what was wrong. Why did Buffy need him to comfort her?

Question 11

Who does Spike force to build his Buffybot?

Unable to kill the Slayer, leave her behind, or get her to even consider the idea of starting a relationship, Spike decides to go full creeper with the situation and commission a sex robot to be designed in her image. Immediately after learning there was a weird computer genius in town who made a similar robot lover for themselves, Spike intimidated the person into building a new model fit to his interests. Disgusting as this origin story is, the Buffybot would actually play a pretty important role in some of the Slayer’s impending battles. Who created it?

Question 12

What song does Spike sing to Buffy in Once More, with Feeling?

Perhaps the most celebrated episode in all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the musical Once More, with Feeling, where the characters felt emotions so strongly they could no longer talk about them, and had to sing instead. Every major character gets at least a line or two to shine, even if some of it is mostly filler, and a select few get entire solo songs to show off their vocal gymnastics. Spike is one of them, singing a passionate song to Buffy essentially begging her to leave him alone. What was it called?

Question 13

Where do Buffy and Spike share their first kiss?

Predicting their entire relationship, the first kiss shared between Buffy and Spike only comes after the most tragic of circumstances, involved a heavy amount of deceit, and came at a time when one party was way too injured to enjoy it. Spike had just been kidnapped by Glory, and in a rare show of bravery, refused to reveal any secrets about Dawn being The Key despite serious torture and punishment. Touched to find out, Buffy offers him a smooch when he’s still half-unconscious, suffering from his wounds. Where did it happen?

Question 14

Which other member of the Scooby Gang does Spike hook up with?

Whether human, vampire, or Slayer, nothing can hurt a person in a relationship more than when their partner cheats on them. The ultimate betrayal of trust, finding out a lover cheated can crush a person’s soul, and even learning they found someone new shortly after a breakup can hurt just as much. The situation with Buffy and Spike is somewhere in the middle, as Buffy repeatedly refuses to call what they do “dating,” yet it still deeply hurts her when Spike sleeps with another woman in the Scooby Gang. Who was it?

Question 15

Who is the first person in the Scooby Gang to learn about Spike and Buffy’s relationship?

Considering how long Buffy and Spike were rivals before shacking up, it should be no surprise that the Slayer was hesitant in telling her friends and allies about this sudden change in their relationship. For the first few weeks if not months the two are dating, she keeps it a total secret from everyone in the Scooby Gang, coming up with various excuses to explain her disappearance whenever meeting up with him for a scandalous tryst. Eventually, she can’t keep it in any longer, and tells all to one of her friends. Who does Buffy first confide in?

Question 16

True or False: Spike has drank Buffy’s blood.

Being a vampire, Spike’s main modus operandi before meeting Buffy was hunting down humans and drinking their blood so he could stay alive. While this sort of behavior gradually calmed down as they became friends, there was still a solid five years they spent as enemies, still hunting down prey wherever he went. Given their later relationship, one might think Spike never drank Buffy’s blood, but then again, Angel did, and that didn’t stop them from getting extremely close. Did Spike drink from her neck, too?

Question 17

Who does Spike kidnap, torture, and threaten to kill to prove his love for Buffy?

The heart wants what it wants, so the moment Spike starts having tingly feelings about Buffy, he decides to make some pretty grand gestures to prove his love for her. Once all the usual attempts at courtship fail spectacularly, Spike makes one last hail Mary pass for the Slayer’s heart, kidnapping and torturing an old share acquaintance of his. Obviously, this act of devotion only makes sense to a soulless vampire, so Buffy’s reaction was closer to terror than appreciation. In any event, who did Spike put through hell in Buffy’s honor?

Question 18

How many Slayers did Spike kill before meeting Buffy?

Even before Spike and Buffy ever met, it could be argued the two were destined to cross paths for centuries. This is because Spike was the rare class of vampire who not only didn’t fear the Slayer, but chose to track the chosen girls down and challenge them to life-threatening battles. The whole reason Spike initially seeks Buffy out is to add another name to his list, a fact that understandably causes her to hate him almost immediately. How many Slayers had he killed at that point?

Question 19

True or False: Spike’s chip didn’t work when he fought Buffy.

For as much as it annoys the man, it’s entirely possible Spike and Buffy never would have gotten so close without The Initiative capturing him and putting a chip in his head that prevents him from harming humans. At first, this makes Spike extremely depressed, but in due time, it leads to him joining Buffy and the Scoobies as they fight demons, which Spike can still harm, thus temporarily sating his bloodlust. However, technology isn’t always perfect, especially when mystical beings like the Slayer are involved. Does Spike’s chip not work on Buffy?

Question 20

In which episode do Buffy and Spike first consummate their relationship?

Given Buffy’s disastrous experience in losing her virginity to Angel, followed by another awful tryst with Parker, the Slayer understandably tries to take things slow with all future romantic partners. Throw in the fact she hated Spike’s guts for several years before feeling anything positive towards him and it’s no surprise she resisted temptation for a very long time prior to finally giving in. Of course, many fans had been right there with Spike wanting it to happen for years at that point, and could never forget the episode when they did the deed. Which one was it?

Question 21

Where is Buffy working when she gets romantic with Spike behind a dumpster on one of her breaks?

Throughout the beginning of their relationship, Buffy’s romance with Spike is a metaphor for her entire life falling apart around her. Whenever things are at their absolute worst, she falls into his arms, feeling there’s no lower rock bottom for her to hit. Unsurprisingly, this feeling overpowers her when she’s forced to take a part-time job at a fast food restaurant to pay for mounting bills from her mother’s funeral. One day, Spike visits her at work, and again thinking life can’t get any worse, she hooks up with him behind the dumpster on her break. Where is she working?

Question 22

To which pop singer does Buffy (and everyone else) compare Spike’s look?

Buffy didn’t need to get all that close to Spike before she had a very simple and relatable way to describe him to strangers, nor did anyone else. Take one look at the guy and it’s obvious his entire image is based on that of a certain 1980s pop star, down to the peroxide blonde hair and omnipresent leather jacket. Of course, the way Spike and Buffy tell the story, it was the vampire who inspired the singer’s look, not the other way around. Who does Buffy tell a bouncer (and presumably others) Spike looks like?

Question 23

True or False: Spike's attack on Buffy in her bathroom finally activates his chip

Relationships all have their ups and downs, but certain things are almost impossible to forgive. Especially in today’s culture, unwanted sexual advances are pretty much at the top of the list when it comes to immediate deal breakers between men and women. Conflicted about rejection and without a soul to give him any compassion, Spike crosses that horrible line in Buffy’s own bathroom shortly after she stepped out of a shower one day, or at least tries to. Did his chip save her?

Question 24

Which demon restores Spike’s soul so he can be a better person for Buffy?

After his horrible encounter with Buffy in her bathroom, Spike acknowledges he’ll never be good enough for her in his current state. The only solution he can think of to fix this problem is regaining his soul, becoming the second vampire to do so after Angel. Truth be told, the series doesn’t give the best explanation of how exactly Spike goes about achieving this goal, except to say he traveled to a faraway country and found a demon who could somehow give him what he wanted, and what he felt Buffy deserved. What is the demon’s name?

Question 25

What secret does Buffy tell Spike before any of her friends?

No matter how much she claims to hate him, Buffy’s relationship with Spike largely begins because she decides to trust him with certain secrets she can’t or won’t tell any of her friends. She knows that no one will believe Spike if he claims she’s doing this, and even better, Spike knows how easy it would be for her to kill him if he broke her trust either way. There’s one secret in particular, revealed during “Once More, with Feeling,” that defines Buffy’s entire character trajectory from then on, which she refuses to share with friends. What was it?

Question 26

Where does Buffy find Spike after he regains his soul?

By hook or by crook, Spike’s ultimate plan to “give Buffy what she deserves” is a successful endeavor, at least in the sense that he does indeed wind up with a soul when it’s over. Unfortunately, after getting re-ensouled, Spike has serious difficulty confronting what he did, as had both Angel and Darla before him. Without anyone to help him through it, this causes Spike to go insane, until Buffy finally finds him and slowly nurses her former lover back to health. Where was he hiding?

Question 27

How many days did Spike count Buffy as being dead?

Seeing no other choice to save the world, Buffy leaps to her death so she can close a portal to a hell dimension that would otherwise terrorize and destroy the human world. Still in love with her, Spike is shattered to see the Slayer dead, openly breaking into tears and weeping. From there, Spike starts protecting Buffy’s sister Dawn while counting down the days Buffy was out of his life. When the Slayer’s friends revive her, Spike is able to use this information to say exactly how long she was gone. How many days was Buffy dead?

Question 28

What reason does Spike initially give Buffy’s mom about why they know one another?

Long before Spike and Buffy’s mother Joyce becomes friends by binging on Passions together, the elder Summers woman simply sees him as yet another bad choice her daughter is making. At the point of their initial meeting, Joyce didn’t even know that Buffy was the Slayer, with Spike almost spilling the beans pretty much instantly. To cover for his mistake, Spike comes up with a pretty ridiculous lie, and for whatever weird reason, Joyce actually buys it. Why does Spike say he and Buffy know each other?

Question 29

What term does Buffy use to describe Spike before giving him The Amulet?

By the time Buffy is over, the title character and Spike may not be “lovers,” or “dating,” and they certainly aren’t married. In the final episode, the writers even went out of their way to make it clear Buffy had just as good a chance of ending up with Angel as she did with Spike. One special thing Spike did have over his romantic rival, though, is that Buffy chose to give her The Amulet that ultimately won the battle over evil. What symbolic word does she use to describe Spike when telling him to wear it?

Question 30

Who betrays Buffy by helping Robin try to kill Spike?

From the second Buffy and Spike stop outwardly trying to kill one another and gradually become friends and lovers, pretty much all of her friends think it’s an atrocious idea. Some are less happy about it than others, and a few even try their hardest to come from a place of understanding, accepting that Buffy’s romantic choices are her own. Once Buffy gets friendly with Robin Wood, that all goes out the window, as he has a personal vendetta with Spike dating back decades. Who tricks Buffy in a plot to try and help Robin get revenge?

Question 31

What are Buffy’s last words to Spike?

All things must come to an end, and for Spike and Buffy, the ending of their relationship is also the final act of Spike’s unlife (until he comes back on Angel, anyway). During the climatic final battle between good and evil in the Hellmouth, the Amulet that Buffy gave Spike shines a brilliant light onto the battlefield and starts disintegrating all vampires in sight. Naturally, this means Spike has to die as well, leaving Buffy behind. If nothing else, the Slayer have time to say some final words before Spike turns to dust. What are they?

Question 32

How does Spike respond the only time Buffy says “I love you” to him?

Although Buffy has a friendly personality, she’s actually pretty reserved when it comes to telling a guy she loves them. This makes sense given some of her past romantic experience, but it probably still hurts Spike to know she only said it one single time during their entire relationship, and it was seconds before he died. Then again, his response suggests he knew how the Slayer really felt all along, and may have even come to terms with it in some strange way. What does he say?

Question 33

Who does Buffy date after Spike, according to Andrew?

After Spike and Buffy have their tearful goodbye in “Chosen,” the couple never again crossed paths on television. Not that this stopped Spike from talking about her all the time, which shouldn’t be surprising because his next partner in fighting crime would be her other ex, the first vampire with a soul, Angel. In one episode of Buffy’s spinoff, her warring exes travel all the way to Italy when they hear she’s in danger and might need their help. When there, both are heartbroken to learn Buffy actually moved on to another man. Who does Andrew say she’s dating?

Question 34

Roughly how many years apart are Spike and Buffy in age?

Okay, so right off the bat, we have to admit this one might be a little confusing. Both Buffy and Spike saw their official date of birth change once or twice over the course of the series, so it’s almost impossible to state with certainty what the age gap between them is to the year. It is possible to approximate in decades, though, and considering just how far apart these two are, that’s all we need to ask the question. Approximately how many years before Buffy was Spike born?

Question 35

In which episode do Spike and Buffy first meet?

Part of the reason Buffy’s relationship with Angel will always be more popular than her dalliance with Spike is simply that it lasted longer. The Slayer and her first vampire boyfriend met and started flirting in the show’s very first episode, while Spike didn’t show up until season two. On the other hand, he sure stuck around for a long time after that, playing increasingly important roles on Buffy until the very end, followed by a co-starring stint on Angel. It all had to start somewhere, though, so do you know which episode he made his debut in?
