How Many Yu-Gi-Oh! Monsters Can You Name?

1.5K Shares

There are three main kinds of cards in Yu-Gi-Oh!: spells, traps, and monsters. You need to use monster cards to attack your opponent and defend yourself from harm. The monsters of Yu-Gi-Oh! were one of the biggest draws of the anime series, as the characters often played with the aid of holograms that made the monsters look alive. As such, the average game of Duel Monsters looked like something out of an awesome cartoon.

As the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise progressed, the monsters of the series evolved with it. Yu-Gi-Oh! started with fantasy monsters that wouldn't look out of place in Dungeons & Dragons. This was followed by superheroes and then creatures from a post-apocalyptic world. The series then focused on aliens and extraterrestrial beings. The ways that you could summon monsters also changed as well. Originally, you could summon monsters by tributing weaker creatures on the field. You could also fuse two monsters together, or summon a powerful monster using a ritual. As the series progressed, it introduced Synchro summons, where two monsters could join together if one of them was a Tuner. Then there were the Xyz monsters, that could be summoned by sacrificing two monsters of the same level to the field. There have been a lot of different monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh! and it can be hard to keep up with how they all work.

If you clicked on this quiz, then you probably think that you know your Yu-Gi-Oh! monsters. There are literally thousands of different Yu-Gi-Oh! monsters to choose from, so we have a lot of creatures that can be included in the quiz. So, Can You Name These Yu-Gi-Oh! Monsters?

Question 1

This is Seto Kaiba's signature monster

The signature card of Seto Kaiba has remained the most powerful normal monster in the game. There only exists four copies of the card in the Yu-Gi-Oh! world and Kaiba owns three of them. He destroyed the fourth copy, as you can only use three of any kind of card in your deck and he didn't want to risk one of them being used against him. In order to acquire the three copies of this card, he forced one man into bankruptcy, used the Mafia to "convince" the second owner to hand it over, and made the third owner commit suicide.

Question 2

This monster can protect you while still in the hand

One of the most difficult moves to counter in Yu-Gi-Oh! is a card that can be activated in from the hand. This monster can be discarded when your opponent attacks in order to prevent all damage dealt from that battle. There are trap cards with stronger effects than this, but they need to be on the field in order to be activated, which allows them to be countered by enemy effects. This monster inspired the name of the creator of Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged, which is a huge series on YouTube.

Question 3

This is Joey Wheeler's signature monster

The duel between Joey Wheeler and Rex Raptor ended with both characters agreeing to an ante rule, where the losing duelist would give up their rarest card to the winner. This was how Joey acquired this powerful monster. This card is actually proof that Joey beat Yugi at the end of Battle City (even though we don't see the duel) as he has the card back in later arcs. This proves that he beat Yugi and won the card back from him.

Question 4

This is Yugi Muto's signature monster

This is Yugo Muto's signature monster. It is supposed to be the ultimate spellcaster in terms of attack and defense. This card actually sucks on its own and needs a whole deck based around it in order for it to become viable. It was revealed in the final arc of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga that this card was based on Mahad, who was a priest who served the Pharaoh in ancient times. Mahad fused with the spirit of the Illusion Magician, in order to be able to serve the Pharoah after death.

Question 5

Joey was once forced to cosplay as his favourite monster

The early seasons of Yu-Gi-Oh! were very sketchy on the actual rules of Duel Monsters. A prime example of this was Joey's favorite card, which was a fusion monster, yet he used to be able to play it directly from his hand and on to the field. This was actually an inconsistency created by the 4Kids dub, as this card was treated like a normal monster in the Japanese version of the show (though it was actually a fusion monster in the card game).

Question 6

This stupid bird almost destroyed Yu-Gi-Oh!

The Yu-Gi-Oh! card game has official rules that need to be followed when playing in a tournament. The strictest of these is the ban list. There are certain cards that are considered too powerful to be used in the current environment. This stupid bird is responsible for creating the ban list. It has the ability to stop the opponent from drawing a card and could retreat to your hand at the end of the turn. It was so powerful that it needed to be stopped.

Question 7

This monster will negate all of the traps on the field

This card became Joey's new signature monster after he lost the Red-Eyes Black Dragon. This card has the ability to negate the effects of all traps on the field. This is an awesome ability, which has kept this card relevant in modern times. This card was actually different in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. It was originally level 7, which meant that it needed two tributes in order to be summoned. It was changed to level 6 in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime/card game, which meant that Joey's duels needed to be rewritten for the cartoon.

Question 8

This buxom monster was repeatedly censored by 4Kids.

There is an Internet law called "Rule 63". It states that for every male version of a character, there will exist a female equivalent somewhere. The creator of Yu-Gi-Oh! decided to make this a canon part of his series and created a sexy female version of the Dark Magician. This monster saw a lot of censorship in the 4Kids dub of the show. The pendant around her neck had the symbol edited out of it and her cleavage was removed.

Question 9

This monster was used by Lumis and Umbra in the anime

Lumis and Umbra were two of Marik's Rare Hunters. They fought as a team and used decks based around cards that were or wore masks. Kaiba and Yugi fought against Lumis and Umbra in the anime, in a duel that needed to be heavily censored. Originally, the duel took place on a high building. Any player that lost their life points would be dropped from the building to their death. This was changed to falling into portals to the Shadow Realm instead.

Question 10

Pegasus could possess your monsters with this horrific beast

Pegasus was a cheater! Not only did he have his own exclusive archetype of Toon monsters that he never shared with the public, but he also used his Millennium Eye to read the thoughts of his enemies and see what cards they were holding at the time. Question 11

Magic the Gathering just called their lawyer

One of Yugi's most powerful monsters had the same attack strength of the Dark Magician, yet only required one tribute to be summoned onto the field. This card has often been accused of being a ripoff of a Magic the Gathering monster called Lord of the Pit. This is more likely a homage, as the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga used to reference a lot of different games, including Dungeons & Dragons. A lot of fans have assumed that Duel Monsters was inspired by Magic the Gathering.

Question 12

If you draw all five pieces of this monster, then you win the game

The first duel of the first episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime concluded with Yugi winning with a special condition. Usually, you win a game of Duel Monsters by dropping your opponent's life points to zero or by making them run out of cards to draw. One of the unique ways to win a game of Duel Monsters is by drawing all five pieces of this monster into your hand. You win the duel the second you draw the final piece.

This was the Egyptian God card used by Seto Kaiba

The Egyptian God cards were some of the most powerful monsters in the entire series. They required three tributes in order to be summoned and each of them had special effects. Question 16

This card will help you get a royal flush

When the Battle City tournament began, Yugi showed up with a deck full of new monsters. He added a set of three new monsters that were based on the royal set from actual playing cards. If he summoned two of them to the field, then he could summon the third one for free. Yugi would use these cards as part of his strategy to summon Slifer the Sky Dragon to the field. As that card required three tributes in order to be summoned.

Question 17

This monster is protected from all equipment

This monster was one of Joey's new cards that he used during the Battle City tournament. It has an effect that destroys all equipment spell cards that are attached to it. This is actually useful, as it is protected from certain possession cards, like Snatch Steal. This monster was part of one of the most notorious combos in Yu-Gi-Oh! history. You could combine this card with Butterfly Dagger Elma to create an infinite combo that could power up cards that required spells to cast.

Question 18

This dapper penguin will kill you in your dreams

The Noah storyline was one of the most nonsensical and intrusive filler arcs in anime history. The competitors of the Battle City tournament are captured and trapped in a virtual world, where they must battle figures from Kaiba's past who duel using avatars based on creatures from Duel Monsters. One of these foes decided to take on the horrifying form of a penguin in a dapper suit. Woe to all who dare oppose a fancy penguin and his playing cards.

Question 19

It's just a jump to the left!

One of Joey Wheeler's signature cards was an effect monster with a random power. When this monster is summoned to the field, you can use its ability once per turn. You flip a coin and if you call it right then all of your opponent's monsters are destroyed. If you call it wrong, then all of your monsters die and you take damage. Yugi gave this card to Joey, though it seems he may have had an ulterior motive, as this card actually powers up the Dark Magician.

Question 20

This warrior becomes stronger with each dragon in the graveyard

This was one of the Yugi's new cards that he added to his deck in the Battle City tournament. It is another member of the "making the Dark Magician seem redundant" club. It is stronger than the Dark Magician by 100 ATK points and it becomes even stronger for each Dragon-type monster that is in the graveyard. This is a card that was made for crushing Kaiba and his dragons in a duel. Despite this, Yugi always preferred to use the Dark Magician instead.

Question 21

Yugi used to use this beast as fusion fodder

This was one of the new cards that Yugi brought with him into the Battle City tournament. Yugi mainly used this as part of a fusion with a creature called Berfomet. The new fusion monster that they created had the ability to be broken back into its original monsters when it was destroyed, which gave Yugi back two monsters that could be as a tribute for the Dark Magician or Buster Blader. That was the main strategy that this card was used for.

Question 22

This defensive wall must eventually go into attack mode

This was one of Yugi's new cards that he added to his deck for the Battle City tournament. This monster has one of the best DEF scores for a monster that doesn't require a tribute in the whole game. The catch to this is that it can only defend against one attack or spell before it is forced to leave defense mode, at which point it becomes wide open to a follow-up attack that will destroy it in one turn.

Question 23

This dragon is made from three different robots

Yugi wasn't the only one who added new cards to his deck of the Battle City tournament. Kaiba also added a trio of new monsters that could combine together into one of the best fusion monsters in the game. The three monsters were draconic robots that had the ability to power each up when they were on the field. This is a fusion monster that doesn't require the use of Polymerization in order to be summoned. You simply need to banish the three component monsters from the field.

Question 24

The three ancient gods can combine into one of the most powerful monsters in the game

This was one of the most powerful monsters in the early series of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime & manga. It's just a shame that it was practically impossible to summon, as it required three specific tributes. You needed Sanga of the Thunder, Kazejin, and Suijin on the field in order to summon this monster. These all required two tributes each, which means that you need to sacrifice nine monsters in total to bring this monster onto this field. It isn't worth the effort.

Question 25

It isn't just the Egyptian God cards who can use three tributes to be summoned to the field

This is one of Joey Wheeler's most powerful cards. It has an ATK score of 2800, which puts it close to the Blue-Eyes White Dragon in terms of strength. What makes this card so powerful is its special ability. This card normally requires two tributes in order to be summoned. If you have three monsters on the field, then you can tribute all of them. If you use three tributes to summon this card, then it will destroy all of your opponent's monsters.
