How Many Pokémon From The First 3 Seasons Can You Name?

Whether it was the television show, or the iconic Nintendo video games, Pokémon was a big part of a lot of millennial childhoods. The worldwide sensation has sold more than 300 million games to date, and they’ve done extremely well in other mediums as well, such as the TV show, movies, and the mobile phone app Pokémon Go that was very popular for a while in 2016.

The franchise is based in a fictional world, where people inhabit their world along with animals called Pokémon. The Pokémon are used somewhat like what we use animals for, but Pokémon have a lot more power, and are generally smarter than animals on Earth. They can do all sorts of things, like teleport, breathe fire, create electricity, shoot water, dig tunnels, build houses, and even read minds.

These powers the Pokémon have are used to make everyday life easier, but they also battle each other under the direction of Pokémon Trainers as well. The Pokémon League is the top competition for Trainers and their Pokémon, and your goal in the games is the same as Ash Ketchum’s in the TV series: to catch all the Pokémon that exist, and to become the world’s top Pokémon trainer.

Are you a Pokémon master? Take the quiz to find out!

Question 1

Which Pokémon is this?

This is probably the most recognisable Pokémon there is. While Ash Ketchum is the main character of the Pokémon anime TV show, this Pokémon was the real star of the show. When Ash arrived at Professor Oak’s lab too late to get one of the traditional starting Pokémon, he was stuck with this uncooperative one. This electric mouse famously refused to stay inside any of Ash’s Pokéballs, which resulted in the two going on all their adventures together, and forming a friendship stronger than any other trainer and their Pokémon. Do you know what this is called?

Question 2

Which Pokémon is this?

According to the official Pokédex, this Pokémon weighs in at over 1,000lbs., making it by far the largest of any in the original 150. The Pokémon’s size will cause you problems in many of the games, as it tends to inconveniently block your path by falling asleep. Of course, this is just part of the game’s plot, as it forces you to acquire the PokéFlute, which will awaken the sleeping giant. With high defence, high HP, and the ability to learn almost any battle move, this Pokémon is a good one to have. What’s its name?

Question 3

Which Pokémon is this?

his Pokémon is one of the three starters that are available to you in the very first Pokémon games, Red and Blue. This is also my pick, every single time. Fire Pokémon are hard to come by, especially in the early parts of the games. Selecting this Pokémon first allows you to breeze through the bug catchers and forests at the beginning, and grow the Pokémon faster than most. Its final evolution is also very impressive. What is this Pokémon’s name?

Question 4

Which Pokémon is this?

This mouse-like Pokémon is more of a nuisance than anything else in both the games, and the anime. Whether it’s the regular long grass, a cave, a building, a basement, or a weak trainer, you can bet on this Pokémon making several appearances, although they’ll likely be very short considering how easy they are to defeat in battle. The Pokédex entry for this Pokémon in references its tendency to steal things from unsuspecting humans in basically all generations of the game. What’s its name?

Question 5

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon looks a lot like a PokéBall, but, of course, it is not. The similarity is used in the game more than the anime. In the games items can be found on the ground, and no matter what the item is, it looks like a PokéBall on the screen. In some locations, you will go to pick up the “PokéBall”, but instead be shocked by this Electric Pokémon and have to battle it. Its evolved form can also be used to power generators, or even an entire Power Plant. What’s the name of the pictured Pokémon?

Question 6

Which Pokémon is this?

This extremely cute Pokémon is best known for its singing ability, both in the anime and in the games. This Pokémon was involved in a running gag in the first season of the show, as one of these fairy Pokémon would follow Ash and the gang, and attempt to sing them her song. That song, however, made everyone that heard it fall asleep. While they were in deep slumber, the Pokémon would go draw things on their faces. Do you know which pop star Pokémon this is?

Question 7

Which Pokémon is this?

This may have been a third generation Pokémon, but it was also one of the first Pokémon to be turned into an internet meme. This cute “mud fish” Pokémon represents the Water-type of the third generation starters. While this Pokémon is solely the water type, both of its evolved form are Water/Ground types. The Pokédex entry for this Pokémon suggests that it is much stronger than it looks, and that it has great awareness due to the fins on its head. Do you you know what its name is?

Question 8

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon is most recognizable as the mouthy member of Team Rocket in the anime. Sort of like Ash’s Pikachu, this particular Pokémon was also seldom seen inside a PokéBall. While all other Pokémon can only say their name, this cat-like Pokémon taught itself to speak and walk like humans in order to try to win over a female. After that plan failed, he made himself an important member of Team Rocket, and spent the rest of his time trying to help them steal Ash’s Pokémon. What’s this Pokémon’s name?

Question 9

Which Pokémon is this?

This is a Water/Ground type Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation of Pokémon. It is the evolved form of a Wooper, which is also an amphibious Water/Ground type. In the anime, these Pokémon would gather at the Blue Moon Falls during a full moon and compete with each other to see who can throw an object the closest to the moon, judged by who can throw it furthest up the waterfall. Ash was made privy to this tradition when one of these Pokémon stole his GS Ball to use in the celebration.

Question 10

Which Pokémon is this?

This is a classic Pokémon, and a favourite of Ash Ketchum’s friend, and Pewter City Gym Leader Brock. Design-wise, the Pokémon is a snake made out of a series of boulders, and is quite obviously a Rock type Pokémon because of this. It generally has very high defence, and is faster than you would expect. The big holes in the ground that this Pokémon leaves behind while tunnelling underground are often used by the Pokémon in the next question for housing. Do you know what the name of this Pokémon is?

Question 11

Which Pokémon is this?

Now there was some controversy with this Pokémon a year or so back when an internet meme tried to convince people that what we all thought was this Pokémon’s nose, was actually its mouth. This has since been proved false, and fans no longer believe their childhood was a lie. This burrowing Pokémon ended up tunnelling a path between Vermilion and Pewter City, and the cave has since been named after it. This Ground type comes in very handy when taking on the Vermilion City Gym in the games. What’s the name of the Pokémon?

Question 12

Which Pokémon is this?

This is another Pokémon that played a big role in both the anime and in the games. As a reference to animal hunting and poaching in real life society, some of these Pokémon had their tails cut off and sold by Team Rocket in the games. This Pokémon also had a popular internet meme attached to it, referencing the fact that the Pokémon is a pretty slow thinker. As a mixed Water/Psychic type, this Pokémon and its evolved forms can be effective in battle, despite its seed. What’s the Pokémon’s name?

Question 13

Which Pokémon is this?

This is a Poison type Pokémon that you can only find in certain areas of the games. I’m not exactly sure what it is, but it is definitely toxic, and I wouldn’t suggest breathing in the fumes it releases. Of course, if you’ve passed your WHMIS training, the skull and crossbones sign in its chest would warn you before you get too close. One of these Pokémon was used by James from Team Rocket, until it evolved. What’s the name of this Pokémon?

Question 14

Which Pokémon is this?

This is another Pokémon that will temporarily block your pathway in multiple Pokémon games. Located in the Johto and Hoenn regions, you will usually need to complete a task that results in you obtaining a SquirtBottle or Wailmer Pail that you can use to unsettle this Pokémon into battle. Although it looks like a tree, the Pokémon is surprisingly a Rock type, rather than a Grass type, which explains why the water bothers it so much. Do you know what this Pokémon is called?

Question 15

Which Pokémon is this?

This is one of the first Psychic Pokémon you find out about in the games. It’s extremely tough to catch because the only move it knows is ‘Teleport’, which allows the Pokémon to immediately flee from battle. While it’s usually seen with its eyes closed, the Pokémon can sense danger simply by reading minds, a teleport out of trouble. In the anime, Saffron City’s Gym leader Sabrina had one of these that eventually evolved into a Kadabra. What’s the name of this Pokémon?

Question 16

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon can be obtained in the games (generation II and after) by giving an Onix a Metal Coat to hold, and then trading him to a friend. This Pokémon is very similar to an Onix, except it’s an iron snake instead of a rock snake. Brock’s Onix eventually evolves into this in the anime. This Pokémon is also used by Jasmine, the Olivine City Gym leader in both the anime, and in the games. Do you remember what this Pokémon is called?

Question 17

Which Pokémon is this?

This cute blue elephant Pokémon was introduced in Generation II. The Pokédex entry states that “It swings its long snout around playfully, but because it is so strong, that can be dangerous”, and also it “uses its long nose to shower itself. When others gather around, they thoroughly douse each other with water. These Pokémon can be seen drying their soaking-wet bodies at the edge of water.” Ash actually has one of these in the anime, which he got when an egg he was taking care of hatched. It later evolved. What’s the Pokémon called?

Question 18

Which Pokémon is this?

This is known as “The Pig Pokémon”, according to Ash’s PokéDex in the anime TV show. Unlike pigs in real life, these Pokémon are coated in a thick fur, and live in very cold temperatures. You can find this Pokémon in the games in the Ice Cave near Blackthorn City. It originally only had one evolved form, which was a slightly larger swine with fur, but another mammoth-like Pokémon was added in Generation IV. Do you know what the name of this ice pig Pokémon is?

Question 19

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon is one of the three starters from the second Generation. The Grass type’s two identifying features include the necklace of buds around its neck, as well as the leaf on its head, which it uses for battle. That leaf is already bigger than the rest of its body, but it also continues to get bigger as the Pokémon evolves. In the anime, Ash did catch one of these, and trained it throughout its two evolutions. Do you know what this leaf Pokémon is called?

Question 20

Which Pokémon is this?

This small Electric Pokémon first appeared in Generation III. If you’re playing Pokémon Ruby or Sapphire, you can find plenty of these on both routes south and east of Mauville City. In the anime, Mauville City’s Gym Leader Wattson was comforted by one of these Pokémon after suffering a simple defeat to Ash. Since Wattson is already a predominantly Electric-type trainer, he took that Pokémon in and kept it as his own. Do you know what this green and yellow-striped Pokémon is?

Question 21

Which Pokémon is this?

These two Pokémon were introduced in Generation III, which by no coincidence is the same game that introduced double battles. Double battles are like a normal battle, but with two Pokémon on either side rather than just 1-on-1. These two Electric Pokémon work well together, but not so well alone. The red one has a plus sign on his cheek and on his tail, while the blue one has minus signs, representing the positive and negative charges you would find on a battery. Do you remember their names?

Question 22

Which Pokémon is this?

This hilarious looking Pokémon is actually a very strong Psychic type. It is known as the “Barrier Pokémon.” The Pokédex states that “by rapidly moving its fingers, Mr. Mime can stop air molecules to create an invisible wall.” It basically acts like a mime would when they at like a wall is in front of them, except this Pokémon actually creates an invisible wall there, protecting itself in battle. If this Pokémon is ever interrupted while miming, it will slap the offender with its large hands. Do you know the name of this Pokémon?

Question 23

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon may look a lot like those useless Pidgeys you see in the tall grass as you’re leaving your hometown in the Pokémon games, and that would be because this is a much stronger version of that Pokémon. Two evolutions from that tiny bird later, and you get this: a much bigger and stronger bird. Ash Ketchum had one of these in the first season of the anime, although it left him to watch over a group of Pidgeys the same day that it evolved. Do you know what this Pokémon’s name is?

Question 24

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon also played a decent role in the anime, as it was a part of Jessie and James’ Team Rocket crew. This Pokémon was constantly confused, and would jump out of its PokéBall whenever he wanted, not necessarily when Jessie or James wanted him to. The Pokédex entry from Pokémon Silver states that it is never first to attack. With such high HP, and great counter moves, it can afford to battle with style and still come out on top. Do you remember this Pokémon’s name?

Question 25

Which Pokémon is this?

This is another Pokémon frequently used by the bad guys in the both Pokémon video games, and the anime. It’s not just Team Rocket either. Third Generation villains Team Magma and some members of Team Aqua use this massive dog-like, Dark type Pokémon. The Pokédex entry even references its likeness to wolves when it states “they travel and act as a pack in the wild. The memory of its life in the wild compels the Pokémon to obey only those trainers that it recognizes to possess superior skill.” Clearly they’re also pretty picky. Do you know what this Pokémon is called?

Question 26

Which Pokémon is this?

This is a giant Normal type Pokémon, whose name (like many others in this quiz, and the Pokémon world in general) stems from the animal that inspired its appearance. Clearly, this Pokémon is made to look like a bear, just not any bear on Earth. The tan ring around the Pokémon’s chest is probably the most distinguishable part of their appearance. Standing at roughly 5’11”, 277 lbs., it’s not as big as I originally thought, but it’s more than strong enough to handle its own in battle. What is the name of this Pokémon?

Question 27

Which Pokémon is this?

Again, this Pokémon’s name comes from the real life animal that inspired its appearance. And, once again, the inspiration is not very tough to figure out. This Psychic Pokémon is very obviously modelled after a giraffe, and is commonly referred to as a “long-neck Pokémon”. The head on the Pokémon’s tail isn’t just for show, it is an actual head with a mouth and brain of its own, although the brain isn’t big enough to do a whole lot except react to things near it, usually by biting whatever it is. Do you remember the name of this Pokémon?

Question 28

Which Pokémon is this?

The trend continues in question 28, as this is another Pokémon with obvious inspirations from the real life world. This whale-like Pokémon isn’t just modelled after any old whale, it is based on the massive blue whale. Because of this, it is the largest Pokémon that exists, and yes this includes legendaries, mega-evolutions, and primal forms. Despite being the largest, it isn’t the heaviest, although it’s probably for the best. It’s known as a float whale, and wouldn’t be able to do that, or jump out of the water if it wasn’t so full of air. What’s it called?

Question 29

Which Pokémon is this?

This is another one of the starter Pokémon from the first generation. Although it’s not the one I would personally take, it’s not a bad choice. However, if I were guaranteed to get one of these members of the squad, and got it to wear those cool sunglasses all the time, I’d probably consider changing my opinion. Until I get one of these with dope shades, I’ll be taking the Fire type, every time. Do you know what this Pokémon’s name is?

Question 30

Which Pokémon is this?

This fish-like Pokémon made its debut in Generation II. The weird part about this Pokémon is that it evolves into a Pokémon that looks absolutely nothing like it. This Pokémon is small, blue, and looks like a regular fish, while its evolved form resembles a red octopus. This Pokémon primarily spends its time attached to either a Mantine or a Mantyke, both of which are stingray-like Pokémon. That is, until it evolves and does its own thing as an octopus. Do you know what this Pokémon is called?

Question 31

Which Pokémon is this?

This is the final evolved form of those pesky Zubat’s that you can’t seem to escape when you’re travelling through caves. Although the Zubat is one of the original 151 Pokémon, this Pokémon wasn’t introduced until Generation II. There is a Pokémon in the evolution stage in between Zubat and this Pokémon, and you can only evolve that once its reached a high level of friendship with its trainer, an aspect of the games that was introduced in Gen II. Do you know what this four-winged bat Pokémon’s name is?

Question 32

Which Pokémon is this?

There have been a lot of really cute Pokémon in this quiz, and there are lots others as well. That said, this is my choice for the all-time cutest Pokémon. Just look at it. As if the body/head, and the little arms weren’t cute enough, it’s tail acts as a spring, so it bounces everywhere. On top of all that, it balances a pearl on its head. These aspects of the Pokémon are crucial to its survival, as the bouncing regulates its heartbeat, and the pearl amplifies the Psychic Pokémon’s powers. Oh yeah, its name is pretty cute, too.

Question 33

Which Pokémon is this?

This sloth-like Pokémon is pretty hilarious, if you find slow-moving sloths hilarious. The Pokédex entries state that the Pokémon sleeps for 20 hours a day, its heart beats just once a minute, and it only needs to eat about three leaves per day. What a life. Weirdly, the evolved form of this Pokémon can’t ever sit still, and then when it evolves again, it goes back to being incredibly lazy. Can you name this Normal type Pokémon from Generation III?

Question 34

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon is a very rare example of a mixed Water/Electric type. It gets its design from a specific type of an anglerfish called a footballfish. Like the real life version, this Pokémon emits light from the tentacle-like limb that protrudes at the top of the Pokémon’s body/forehead. Both the Pokémon and the real life fish use this light to attract its prey when they hunt at the ocean floor. Do you have any idea what this Pokémon is called?

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon resembles that of a small turtle, and it neither evolves into, or from another Pokémon. This Pokémon seeks out berries and stores them inside its shell, where the berries liquify and ferment to create a berry juice. This juice was used to make medicine by an old man in the anime. Also in the anime, a special one of these Pokémon was hunted by Jessie and James of Team Rocket because its unique berry juice attracted Pokémon to whoever drank it. Do you know its name?

Question 36

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon is known best for ferrying people across large bodies of water. According to its Pokédex entry from the anime, it would much prefer to do that than engage in any type of trainer battle. This Pokémon is also extremely intelligent, to the point where it can understand human speech. Ash Ketchum did have one of these Pokémon for exactly that purpose of being carried across the water. Do you remember the name of this majestic, smart, Water type Pokémon?

Question 37

Which Pokémon is this?

This is a really fun Pokémon that was introduced in Generation II. Its main battle move is ‘Present’, which when used, results in the Pokémon pulling a random special item out of its hollow tail, and throwing it at the opposing Pokémon, either damaging or healing it. It’s kind of like the Santa Claus of Pokémon, except if over half of your Christmas presents blew up in your face. This Ice/Flying Pokémon isn’t the strongest by any means, but Pokémon have other benefits than just battling. Do you know this Pokémon’s name?

Question 38

Which Pokémon is this?

In Pokémon’s second generation, it not only added new Pokémon for the old ones to evolve into, it also introduced Pokémon that evolved into Pokémon that previously existed in Generation I. This particular Pokémon evolves into Electabuzz. An Electric type, this Pokémon can generate electricity by rotating its arms. However, it can’t produce much without getting fatigued. It’s not easy to obtain this Pokémon in the games; you basically need to catch an Electabuzz, then put it in the Day Care Center and hope one of these hatches out of an egg. Do you know the name of this “baby Pokémon”?

Question 39

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon is part of a major plot line in the first generation games. This Pokémon was actually killed by Team Rocket, leaving its pre-evolved form as an orphan. Its shell is very brittle and fragile - just touching it causes it to crumble apart.” Do you know what this Pokémon is called?

A chicken that can produce fire and also knows martial arts is a weird concept, but it works for this Pokémon. What’s its name?

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon is one of the strongest non-legendaries in any Pokémon game. Dragon types are notoriously strong, and this is the strongest of those, at least in Generation I it is. The Pokémon is most commonly associated with the Dragon Master, member of the Elite Four, and Pokémon League Champion Lance. Just one isn’t good enough for him, he usually has at least two. Which Pokémon is this?

This is also a Dragon Pokémon, and also a very strong one that you will not find in the wild, but it is quite different from the Pokémon from the question prior. Question 50

Which Pokémon is this?

This Pokémon being the last in this quiz is fitting, because it’s usually the very last Pokémon that you can catch in the games. This is also the strongest Pokémon available, most likely due to the circumstance in which the Pokémon came to life. This Pokémon was not born naturally, but rather conceived by a team of scientists. This is also why there is only one of them in the Pokémon world. Do you know the name of this legendary psychic Pokémon?
