Whether it was the television show, or the iconic Nintendo video games, Pokémon was a big part of a lot of millennial childhoods. The worldwide sensation has sold more than 300 million games to date, and they’ve done extremely well in other mediums as well, such as the TV show, movies, and the mobile phone app Pokémon Go that was very popular for a while in 2016.
The franchise is based in a fictional world, where people inhabit their world along with animals called Pokémon. The Pokémon are used somewhat like what we use animals for, but Pokémon have a lot more power, and are generally smarter than animals on Earth. They can do all sorts of things, like teleport, breathe fire, create electricity, shoot water, dig tunnels, build houses, and even read minds.
These powers the Pokémon have are used to make everyday life easier, but they also battle each other under the direction of Pokémon Trainers as well. The Pokémon League is the top competition for Trainers and their Pokémon, and your goal in the games is the same as Ash Ketchum’s in the TV series: to catch all the Pokémon that exist, and to become the world’s top Pokémon trainer.

This is probably the most recognisable Pokémon there is. While Ash Ketchum is the main character of the Pokémon anime TV show, this Pokémon was the real star of the show. When Ash arrived at Professor Oak’s lab too late to get one of the traditional starting Pokémon, he was stuck with this uncooperative one. This electric mouse famously refused to stay inside any of Ash’s Pokéballs, which resulted in the two going on all their adventures together, and forming a friendship stronger than any other trainer and their Pokémon. In some locations, you will go to pick up the “PokéBall”, but instead be shocked by this Electric Pokémon and have to battle it. It is known as the “Barrier Pokémon.” The Pokédex states that “by rapidly moving its fingers, Mr. Mime can stop air molecules to create an invisible wall.” It basically acts like a mime would when they at like a wall is in front of them, except this Pokémon actually creates an invisible wall there, protecting itself in battle. The memory of its life in the wild compels the Pokémon to obey only those trainers that it recognizes to possess superior skill.” Clearly they’re also pretty picky. This Psychic Pokémon is very obviously modelled after a giraffe, and is commonly referred to as a “long-neck Pokémon”. The head on the Pokémon’s tail isn’t just for show, it is an actual head with a mouth and brain of its own, although the brain isn’t big enough to do a whole lot except react to things near it, usually by biting whatever it is. This whale-like Pokémon isn’t just modelled after any old whale, it is based on the massive blue whale. Because of this, it is the largest Pokémon that exists, and yes this includes legendaries, mega-evolutions, and primal forms. Despite being the largest, it isn’t the heaviest, although it’s probably for the best. It’s known as a float whale, and wouldn’t be able to do that, or jump out of the water if it wasn’t so full of air. What’s it called?

Like the real life version, this Pokémon emits light from the tentacle-like limb that protrudes at the top of the Pokémon’s body/forehead.
