How Did We Lose These Characters From Dragon Ball?

Populated with the strongest warriors in the world who never stop their fight to defend the universe, it goes without saying that not every character to enter the Dragon Ball universe left it in one piece. In fact, quite a few of Goku’s best friends bounced back and forth between heaven and earth on a regular basis, thanks to the eternal power of Shenron and Porunga bringing them back to life even after they repeatedly fall in battle. Nonetheless, the warriors realize the blow that comes with truly losing a fight, as being gone for just a second causes them to miss out on the next battle, putting the entire world at risk.

No matter how many times they get revived, each character to run down Dragon Ball’s Snake Road knows the defeat they suffered was one of the most important moments in their development. Fans of the show can easily discuss who would win in fictional battles at their dream World Martial Arts Tournament, but only those who meticulously watched the show and truly remember it all know the real answers based on past interactions. Granted, not every character to meet their end necessarily does so in a manner that could be considered a “fair fight.” Keep reading to answer how we lost each of these characters from the Dragon Ball universe.

Question 1

Who did Piccolo eliminate along with Goku?

Immediately showing how serious adding a “Z” to a show’s title could be, Goku was mortally wounded for the first time after just a few short episodes. Tasked with facing the greatest threat to planet Earth yet, the legendary Saiyan teamed up with former enemy Piccolo to try and save humanity. Amazingly, even their combined powers aren’t enough to defeat this enemy invader, causing Goku to take the drastic measure of holding him in place while Piccolo blasts them both away with his Special Beam Cannon.

Question 2

Who was Piccolo trying to protect when eliminated by Nappa?

For as close as he would become with Goku and all of humanity, Piccolo was originally introduced to the Dragon Ball series as a callous villain. After realizing he couldn’t defeat Goku, Piccolo gradually ingratiates himself to the Saiyan, soon developing a friendly mentor relationship with a certain member of Goku’s family. In due time, Piccolo cares for the kid so much he’s willing to put his life at serious risk to protect him. In the battle against Vegeta and Nappa, this ultimately costs Piccolo his life.

Question 3

Who eliminates Krillin to send a message to Goku?

Very early in Goku’s life, the fact he’s an incredibly powerful warrior willing to protect humanity at all costs puts him and his friends in serious jeopardy. Shortly after the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, this situation comes to the worst conclusion possible, when Goku’s best friend and training partner Krillin is eliminated by a mysterious, demonic looking new monster. Krillin wasn’t his only victim, as this beast intended to take out every single competitor in the tournament to ensure they wouldn’t interrupt his vile master’s plan.

Question 4

Who was the victim of a Saibaman self-destructing?

Nothing is more dangerous in the never ending battle that is the Dragon Ball universe than a fighter who truly has nothing to lose. Well, that or a creature so outright insane it doesn’t see any problem with self-destructing if it means serving their leader’s warped desires. That’s the fate experienced by a number of Saibamen who traveled to Earth alongside Vegeta and Nappa, as they were willing to do whatever it took to thin the planet’s numbers in preparation for the Saiyan takeover.

Question 5

Which of Dr. Gero’s creations rose up and destroyed him?

Posing a huge threat to Goku from his childhood to the point when he has grandchildren, the Red Ribbon Army is clearly run by a group maniacs. Perhaps craziest of all is mad scientist Dr. Gero, who created Cell and the Androids primarily for purposes of wanton destruction. As often happens to fictional characters playing around with the nature of life and technology, though, one of Dr. Gero’s own creations instantly rebels against his orders, ending any chances at further experimentation, let alone revenge on Goku.

Question 6

Which character self-sacrifices on Nappa's back?

Recognizing that the Saibaman will do absolutely anything to destroy the Earth, and assuming Nappa and Vegeta would do the same, one of Goku’s allies makes a very drastic move against the Saiyan invaders. Having already witnessed several of his closest allies fall in battle, one pint-sized warrior jumps on Nappa’s back and reveals self-destructive powers of his own. Unfortunately, the massive Saiyan is barely effected by the move, making his efforts in vain. If there’s any plus side, it’s that the event made his friends realize how important this battle was going to be.

Question 7

In what item does Master Roshi attempt to contain Piccolo Daimao?

The battle truly never stops in Dragon Ball, so even an old, retired trainer like Master Roshi runs the risk of losing it all in a fight once again. That’s what happens when a previously trapped menace escapes from a household object where Roshi’s own mentor had previously trapped his soul. Naturally, the Turtle Hermit’s immediate course of action is to try and contain the demon in a similar item, but the plan backfires twice over when he misses his target and he’s left mortally exhausted.

Question 8

What was Majin Buu renamed after being resurrected as a good guy?

After reviving dozens of their friends countless times over, Goku and company eventually realize the Dragon Balls could do more than just keep the good guys alive. Apparently, the power of Shenron can even turn a bad guy into a hero, which it does to the pure form of Majin Buu once the monster is finally defeated in battle. In recognition of its strength, Goku wants a newer, nicer Buu around to defend the Earth should he become incapacitated, a possibility that’s definitely well founded given the nature of this quiz.

Question 9

Who does Frieza accidentally destroy when Vegeta deflects an energy beam?

Callous and destructive in every way imaginable, Frieza never flinches or shows any signs of remorse when destroying his enemies. Even when the monstrous warlord begins thinning his own army’s numbers, he doesn’t seem to mind all that much, simply happy more destruction is taking place. The one time he actually seems to get a little bit annoyed is when Vegeta casually bats away an energy beam meant to destroy Goku, sending it directly into the heart of one of Frieza’s most loyal subordinates.

Question 10

Who manages to slice the fused Zamasu in half?

Given how much faith and hope everyone in the Dragon Ball universe puts in Goku’s abilities, one of the easiest ways a super villain could harm them would be to use the legendary Saiyan’s image against him. That’s what Zamasu does when using the Dragon Balls to become Goku Black, and he gets even stronger after fusing with his future self. Not even the combined forces of Goku and Vegeta, fused with the Potara Earrings to make Vegito, stand a chance against him. Luckily, a different warrior is able to channel enough energy into his sword to slice them apart.

Question 11

Which of Goku’s young friends loses their father to Mercenary Tao?

Long before any of Goku’s own friends pass on in battle, the young warrior comes face to face with the concept of loss by way of a young friend he meets while collecting the Dragon Balls. During Goku’s quest, the vicious Mercenary Tao is likewise searching for the mystic orbs and destroying anyone who stops him from getting them. That includes this young man’s father, who eventually becomes the first character wished back to life with the same seven magic balls that caused their meeting.

Question 12

What is Buyon’s weakness?

For all their quirks and eccentricities, one has to give the Red Ribbon Army points for creativity. Rather than attack Goku head on, they occasionally summoned strange monsters and demons to do the dirty work for them, including the strange pink “jiggler” Buyon. Initially, this creature appears to be one of the young Saiyan’s greatest early threats, completely impervious to any energy attacks he has in his repertoire. However, it turns out Buyon does have a major weakness that makes it easy for Goku to quickly break him down.

Question 13

Who removed the bombs from Android 16, preventing his destruction?

Compared to Dr. Gero’s other creations, Android 16 was a decidedly calm soul. Based on the mad scientists own son, this temperament was by design, even as it directly conflicted with the Red Ribbon Army’s usual status quo. Despite this nature, the massive robot is still extremely powerful, thanks to the fact Gero still loaded him with bombs and other explosive devices that could cause serious damage. Initially, he plans to use this fact in the fight against Cell, only to learn his greatest weapons had been dismantled. At that point, it’s easy for Cell to eliminate the heroic robot.

Question 14

Who slices Frieza and King Cold into pieces?

Much to everyone’s shock and surprise, not even Goku accidentally and temporarily destroying Planet Namek with a Spirit Bomb was enough to eliminate either himself or Frieza. Just a few short months after that battle takes place, both parties arrive back on Earth unexpectedly, and Frieza for one seems more than prepared to keep the battle going after having been repaired by his father. The surprises keep coming when a mysterious outsider from the future also arrives on the scene, making remarkably short work of the chilly villains before giving Goku a message.

Question 15

Who did Vegeta destroy in retaliation for revealing Frieza wiped out the Saiyan race?

By the time Goku and Frieza were firmly arch nemeses, the fact the vicious warlord destroyed Planet Vegeta when the legendary Saiyan was still a baby was pretty much common knowledge. However, neither Goku nor anyone else knew the full truth about this background until they arrived on Planet Namek and came face to face with Frieza’s warriors. Thinking it would spare his life, a high Frieza ranking soldier told Vegeta the truth, only for the Saiyan Prince to immediately enact revenge with a powerful energy blast.

Question 16

Which of Frieza’s victims caused Goku to initially become Super Saiyan?

In addition to his general madness and evil tendencies, when Frieza destroyed the Saiyan race, his primary concern was the legends that claimed a Super Saiyan would one day rise with unforeseen power. On Planet Namek, that prophecy finally came true as Frieza did battle with Goku, after the vicious warlord very callously caused one of the legendary warrior’s closest allies to explode with a flick of his fingers. Goku had seen heartless men before, but something about this particular offense tapped into the historic power Frieza had feared.

Question 17

Who defeats his opponents by turning them into chocolate?

When everyone in a given TV universe has potential to mortally wound their opponents, writers need to be creative about how the monsters go about wrecking havoc. There was definitely serious ingenuity at foot when someone suggested the next big menace to the Dragon Ball warriors would be a big pink puffball who can turn his enemies into cookies, chocolates, or other delicious treats. Naturally, the villain then wastes no time in consuming his victims, growing ever stronger for having momentarily sated his hunger.

Question 18

Who gave up their life to so Goku could return to Earth?

The first time Goku falls in battle, all it takes for his friends to bring him back is a simple wish from Shenron. Once this becomes a repeat scenario, though, things aren’t always so easy. In one instance, Goku must take a very unique alternate method to making a comeback, when an ancient being voluntarily gives up his own existence to allow the Saiyan warrior back on Earth, where he can try and save humanity from the next imposing threat. Though hesitant to accept such a sacrifice, Goku takes him up on the offer for the greater good of humanity.

Question 19

Where does Goku transport Cell when he self-destructs?

Each time a Dragon Ball character self-destructed, it was, well, pretty darn destructive. As an amalgam of all other warriors he defeated and absorbed, the idea of Cell in turn self-destructing threatened to destroy the entire planet, something Goku realized and knew he had to prevent. Once Cell started getting bigger and bigger and it was clear his intension was an epic explosion, Goku very quickly sacrificed himself by transporting both himself and the growing villain to a different location they had been informed was disposable.

Question 20

Who passes away from grief as Frieza slowly destroys Planet Namek?

With all the heartbreak, tragedy, and loss that paints the Dragon Ball universe, it’s no surprise that a few characters would be in constant states of mourning. As Frieza systematically eliminates just about every last resident of Planet Namek, this feeling absolutely overwhelms the elder member of the species. Already weakened by his old age, this father figure to the entire Namek race slowly slips away from existence as Frieza’s repeatedly breaks his heart. Not that he had much time left, as he naturally passes on for a second time shortly after the Dragon Balls bring him back.

Question 21

Who eats Cymbal?

By and large, the warriors of Dragon Ball only completely eliminate an opponent when it’s absolutely necessary. Goku in particular has a pure heart and would never harm anyone that wasn’t threatening his own existence, and most of his friends adopt similar beliefs. That said, not everything in the Dragon Ball world is exactly human, and certain characters don’t feel too bad about slaying a monster if it means finding a meal for the day. Surprisingly, the always hungry young Goku thinks eating monsters is bad for the stomach, but not all of his allies seem to agree.

Question 22

Who does Goku accidentally crush while in Giant Ape form?

In a very literal sense, it could be argued that the average Saiyan is so intensely powerful that it’s impossible for them to truly understand their own strength. This is mostly because Saiyans are at their strongest during a full moon, when they turn into a Giant Ape with no control over their actions. The situation is so confusing to young Goku that he spends much of his life completely unaware he accidentally trampled someone extremely close to him while he was basically still a baby.

Question 23

Who takes Cell out?

Able to regenerate his entire being from just a single speck of genetic material, the warriors of Dragon Ball quickly learn it’s borderline impossible for them to defeat Cell. Not even Goku transporting the monster to a foreign planet while it self-destructed could completely stop him, as it was just a short matter of time before he came back to Earth ready to inflict more damage. Of course, the mere fact Goku was now gone didn’t mean his allies were going to give up, and one of them soon stood up and stopped Cell for good.

Question 24

Which of Frieza’s warriors defeated Moori?

After Goku and friends subdued Vegeta’s forces to the extent he left the Earth, the new focus became finding the Dragon Balls of Planet Namek. Unfortunately, the same conversation that allowed Krillin to learn of their existence was also overheard by a stronger menace named Frieza, who similarly wished to collect the mystic orbs for his own vile end. Arriving on the planet shortly before Goku’s allies, Frieza is able to very quickly eliminate multiple Namekian villages, including one occupied by Moori, Dende, and Cargo. Gohan and Krillin witness the whole thing, in total shock over their callous new enemies.

Question 25

Which monster explodes after eating too much light energy?

Big, mean, and destructive as they can be, not every monster in the Dragon Ball universe is necessarily all that smart. This minion of Babidi in particular is clearly not the brightest bulb in the shed, and we mean that in more way than one. First, he attempts to defeat Goku simply by shutting out the lights, as if the Super Saiyan would be afraid of the dark. After that, he eats so much of the light energy Goku expends in battle that he gradually grows bigger and bigger and explodes, ending the battle between them before it even began.

Question 26

When does Goku tell his friends to stop reviving him?

As noted in the intro to this quiz, becoming mortally wounded in battle isn’t exactly the end for anyone in the Dragon Ball universe. Given enough time, it’s always possible the remaining warriors will collect the seven Dragon Balls on one planet or another and wish their fallen allies back into existence. Like anyone else, Goku takes advantage of this fact a few times, but he eventually comes to the conclusion that word of his capabilities attracts constant evil and puts everyone in danger. He’s not wrong, so his friends respect his desire and choose not to wish him back.

Question 27

Which Namekian fighter saves his life by fusing with Piccolo?

When Frieza arrives on Planet Namek, not even the strongest living resident has any chance against him in battle. Lucky for him, Frieza is such a callous villain that he won’t give his victim the mercy of a final blow, leaving him to struggle in a weakened state until nature plays its course. Before that happens, Piccolo stumbles upon the scene and learns of the ability to absorb the power of his fellow Namekians, which the defeated fighter urges him to do in the hope they’ll be able to defeat Frieza.

Question 28

Who turned to stone after using too much energy against Majin Buu?

While many characters in the Dragon Ball universe are known for using similar energy based skills, many of them show subtle differences in the look and results of these moves. For example, a surprising number of Goku’s allies and enemies show a willingness to self-destruct when push comes to shove, yet the manner in which this happens is always a little different. During the battle with Majin Buu, one warrior uses all the energy in his body to create a massive explosion, leaving behind only a stone visage of his former appearance.

Question 29

Which enemy threat is neutralized by being turned into a frog?

There’s more than one way to permanently eliminate an opponent, especially with the weird physics of the Dragon Ball universe. Given the opportunity, Goku would probably prefer to capture or otherwise humanely prevent evil doers from causing more harm rather than defeating them in battle, and in one instance, he basically gets to do exactly that. When an opponent reveals the ability to switch bodies with any host, Goku cleverly tosses a frog in the path of fire, negating any chance of further destruction.

Question 30

Which immortal being does Gohan trap inside the Dead Zone?

Even though the Dragon Balls turn to stone for a year each time someone grants a wish, it’s imperative that Goku and friends keep them close all the time, just to ensure they don’t fall into the wrong hands. When that happens, terrible results are sure to follow, like an evil being wishing for immortality and then attempting to suck Earth into a powerful Dead Zone to assert his control over humanity. Obviously, Goku and friends can’t let that happen, and it’s powerful blasts of energy from young Gohan that seal this demon in his own creation.

Question 31

Which Shadow Dragon is the last defeated before restoring the Dragon Balls?

Given how many times it came up on this quiz, it should be obvious that Goku and friends use the power of the Dragon Balls to bring back their friends a whole darn lot. Even if everyone is alive and well, they tend to seek out the all powerful orbs and grant wishes every year like clockwork, always able to come up with some grandiose dream for Shenron to fulfill. Unfortunately, this practice ultimately backfires on them with the reveal each wish causes a certain amount of negative energy to be released, resulting in creation of the Shadow Dragons.

Question 32

Who distracts Super Android 17 while Goku studies his weak point?

Powerful as he is, Goku almost never walks into a dangerous situation alone. No matter how imminent the threat against the universe may be, the legendary Saiyan won’t leave until he’s sure someone has his back. When former and new enemies combine into one, the need for a second string is stronger than ever, so the whole cavalry is onboard when Super Android 17 begins wrecking havoc. While the cyborg menace is able to stop plenty of Goku’s allies, it’s ultimately someone with a close connection to the Red Ribbon Army who helps reveal his weakness.

Question 33

How many times can Shenron revive someone?

Convenient as it is to know that Dragon Ball characters can suddenly come back from the great beyond pretty much whenever they want, there needs to be a limit to these powers, lest society start taking existence for granted. The beings who created the Dragon Balls were well aware of this, making sure to limit Shenron and Porguna’s powers, albeit in different ways. While Porguna’s drawback is that he can only revive one person per wish, Shenron can revive dozens at once, but only for a limited number of times.

Question 34

Who chooses not to get revived to rid the world of the Black Dragon Balls?

As if the regular Dragon Balls didn’t have enough potential for destruction when falling into the wrong hands, the secondary Black Star Dragon Balls are even more dangerous. Even if a good person collects them and makes a positive wish, the orbs immediately shoot throughout the galaxy in random fashion, and they must be re-collected in one year, or the summoned dragon will negate his wish by destroying the planet. Recognizing how devastating that can be, the person who inadvertently created them becomes the second character to voluntarily refuse further revival.

Question 35

Who uses the Dragon Balls to revive Frieza?

Given how often Goku and his friends collect the Dragon Balls to bring an ally back from the grave, it was inevitable a bad guy would eventually get the same idea. While most villains simply wish to enhance their own power or seek immortality, one of Frieza’s foot soldiers always remained loyal to the warlord, slowly plotting to bring the Saiyan’s archrival back to existence. Initially, Shenron denies the wish due to Frieza being in multiple pieces, but once this person assures the dragon they have the technology to make the wish worth it, the terrifying desire is granted.

Question 36

For which ailment does Future Trunks give Goku medicine?

No matter what happens in battle, Shenron or Porunga are always there to bring Goku and his allies back from darkness when worst comes to worst. However, the two powerful dragons do have limits to their abilities, and there’s nothing that can be done when a human passes on from natural causes. Apparently, this is what happens to Goku in the near future, leading to chaos and disorder that pretty much never ends. On the plus side, Bulma eventually built a time machine and sent her son back in history to give Goku the antidote to his inevitable ailment.

Question 37

What item can instantly revive any ailing warrior to full health?

Before Shenron or Porunga even enter the picture, there’s a secondary option available to anyone in the Dragon Ball universe nearing the brink of disaster. High atop Korin Tower, an adorable white cat is constantly harvesting a certain magical fruit that instantly brings even the most weakened human to the peak of their powers. This is especially helpful for Saiyans, who experience an energy boost each time they come close to the edge and survive. Yajirobe is also a huge fan, going so far as to move in with the cat, but that’s mostly because the dude loves to eat.

Question 38

Which character uses a “Temporal Do-Over” after Frieza destroys the Earth?

Once the Dragon Ball universe started introducing all powerful beings like Gods of Destruction and Omni-Kings, suddenly mere dragons like Shenron and Porunga didn’t seem particularly special. Sure, they can revive warriors who fell in battle, but certain other beings can simply rewind time a few minutes with a “Temporal Do-Over” essentially on a whim. Usually, it’s to fix the mistakes of another powerful entity when they do something reckless, but just to be helpful, he also decides to use this ability after Frieza pointlessly destroys the Earth.

Question 39

Who replaces Kami after he fuses with Piccolo?

While it would appear Piccolo has the ability to fuse with any Namekian he so pleases, the choosing to reunite with Kami was an especially impactful decision. From the moment of his birth, the two had been intrinsically linked, forming the “good” and “evil” halves of the Nameless Namekian who gave his existence to create Earth’s Dragon Balls. While reuniting into one after Piccolo joined the good side made him stronger than ever, Kami needed to pass on his powers to another Namekian to ensure the Dragon Balls would remain in existence when he was gone.

Question 40

Who has the power to casually destroy and erase entire universes?

Forget about the dragons, Goku, or even the Gods of Destruction—there’s no entity in the Dragon Ball universe catering more awe and respect than the Omni-King. Despite a tiny stature and goofy nature, this childlike figure has the power to destroy an entire universe in the blink of an eye, and he’s more than willing to use it many times over. In one instance, he destroys several universes at once, simply because they couldn’t win a tournament held for his amusement. On the plus side, he’s also entirely willing to let Goku undo his destruction with the Dragon Balls.
