How Did These Game Of Thrones Characters Die?

1.5K Shares

It is THE television show to watch right now. Let's be honest, it has been since it started six seasons ago. Game of Thrones, a fantasy medieval-like story about love and war, is based on author George R.R. Martin's book series A Song of Ice and Fire. If you've read the books or watch the series, you know that this fictional world is not for the faint hearted. It's crude, violent, and uncomfortable at times, and epic and beautiful at others. One of the many things that sets Game of Thrones apart from other book and television series is how many freaking characters die.

Minor characters, major characters, you name it - George R.R. Martin, DB Weiss, and David Benioff have no problem with killing people off to move the plot forward. The fandom has seen gruesome deaths, heartbreaking deaths, and really satisfying deaths. You name it, the show has given it to us without a second thought. Not even children or babies have been spared. There have been so many that this quiz won't even cover half of them, but it'll touch on some of the stand out moments. Think you can remember how Ned Stark, Joffrey Baratheon, or Margaery Tyrell died? Take this quiz and prove it!

Question 1

How did Viserys Targaryen die?

Ah, Viserys. Daenerys Targaryen's ambitious, cocky, and entitled older brother. Who could forget the class act of a man who literally sold his sister to Khal Drogo in an attempt to gain power and have his own army at his fingertips? Viserys didn't last very long, though. The slender, blond-haired Targaryen may have made himself one too many enemies where he needed allies...and his claim to the Iron Throne died real soon. After his death, Daenerys truly took on the role of Khaleesi.

Question 2

How did Lysa Arryn die?

In case you can't remember who she is - you probably should, though, given how extra she was - Lysa Arryn was none other than Catelyn Stark's sister. She was always jealous of her sister, because she got more attention than her. Lysa is also weird because she kept breastfeeding her son well past his infant and toddler years, and watches him like a total hawk. She married well, but never quite got past being absolutely and undeniably eerie and weird.

Question 3

How did Robert Baratheon die?

The last true Baratheon to be king of Westeros, Robert Baratheon was a relatively fair man. If Ned Stark could respect him and be his friend, then he must be decent, right? Although Robert Baratheon did have children bearing his last name who succeeded him (like Joffrey and Tommen), they were actually conceived from the incestuous relationship of Cersei and Jaime Lannister. Robert Baratheon's death was basically what set off the insane bloodbath that we're currently watching on the show!

Question 4

How did Ned Stark die?

Our baby Eddard. The fandom mourns this man every new episode of the show. In the first season, most people who haven't read the books were convinced Ned Stark was the protagonist, and therefore couldn't possibly be killed off. But oh, were they wrong. George R.R. Martin is not a writer for the faint-hearted, and he doesn't hesitate to kill a beloved character to move the plot forward. Unfortunately, the Lord of Winterfell was one of his victims. It's a loss the fandom still feels today.

Question 5

How did Khal Drogo die?

Khal Drogo and Daenerys' relationship was kind of a worrisome one - and not entirely healthy. Daenerys was basically sold to Drogo as a slave wife, which, understandably, she wasn't happy about. Drogo and Daenerys' first intimate moment together was, plain and simple, rape. Somehow, after all of this, they grew to love each other and Daenerys became very protective over her role as Khaleesi and wife of Khal Drogo. So much so that Daenerys and Khal Drogo became - and might still be - one of the greatest ships of the show.

Question 6

How did Renly Baratheon die?

Jeez, talk about bad luck! The Baratheons really haven't been doing well in this series. Half of the Baratheons that the people of Westeros were aware of weren't even Baratheons to start with, and even they're dead. Renly Baratheon, Robert's brother, wasn't spared in the great race for the Iron Throne. To be fair, anyone who was or is attempting to take it over is guaranteed to have a good few enemies. Poor Renly, all he ever wanted was the Lannisters out of King's Landing!

Question 7

How did Talisa Stark die?

Talisa Stark was in and out of the series so fast that it's easy to forget she was ever even there. The lovely brunette did, however, make herself noticed by one very handsome and important northerner - Robb Stark. He was instantly drawn to the nurse, who had little regard for bloodshed and war, and wasn't impressed by Robb. Eventually, the two got on, and ended up a couple. She was even pregnant with his child - who, sadly, never got to see the light.

Question 8

How did Robb Stark die?

Poor Robb Stark, he'd only been with Talisa for a short period of time before losing her and his first child. George R.R. Martin is hardcore to say the very least. At least the King in the North didn't have to live very long without his beloved Talisa, because he died shortly after. This was one of the saddest, most brutal scenes in the entire series. The dreaded Red Wedding cost Westeros some of its most beloved lords and ladies.

Question 9

How did Catelyn Stark die?

You know what, I take back what I said about the Baratheons having bad luck. It's safe to say that just about everyone in Westeros has bad luck sometimes, but the Starks really haven't had it good. After losing their patriarch Ned Stark, and being completely split up, the Red Wedding took the lives of the eldest Stark son, his wife and baby, and... his mother. This day orphaned all of the remaining Starks, leaving them to their own devices.

Question 10

How did Jon Snow die?

A better question for this would be, how did Jon Snow come back to life? But that's not what this quiz is about. This question could be confusing to someone who's behind on the series - but I warned you. Thank goodness we still have him on the show, because there was a time where it really wasn't looking good for him. That day, the whole fan following lost its mind, and can you blame them? A series without Jon is not one we want.

Question 11

How did Joffrey Baratheon die?

*Cough* Joffrey Lannister *cough*. Just being honest, although his official family name is Baratheon, we all know he was not fathered by the late King Robert. But that's not what made this little runt the absolute worst. For all of the Stark deaths, the death of Khal Drogo, and the misfortunes of our favorites, the death of Joffrey Baratheon was worth it. No character has ever been wanted dead as much as him, and God, was it satisfying to watch.

Question 12

How did Margaery Tyrell die?

Mixed feelings on this death. Margaery was definitely not the worst character, but she was self-serving and wanted to be THE queen, but really, in a world like Westeros, can you blame her? Margaery was never cruel or violent, although she wasn't exactly honest. We could all feel for her when she was imprisoned for her "sins", though. If things worked that way now, everyone would be in prison. It wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world to have her as Queen, but alas.

Question 13

How did Oberyn Martell die?

Honestly, how dare the writers of this show bring in such a daring, sultry, loveable character and rip him away from us only after a season? Oberyn Martell was THE Dornish babe, he always said what was on his mind, was in an eccentric open relationship, and stood up to the Lannisters just the right amount. Maybe he did that a little too much, because Martell's time in King's Landing came to an abrupt end before we were even able to really appreciate him.

Question 14

How did Ygritte die?

Losing Ygritte was absolutely bittersweet for Game of Thrones fans, and really difficult for Jon Snow. Being sworn to the Night's Watch meant that Jon couldn't ever take a woman, and he got there pretty young, meaning that Ygritte was Jon's first and so far only lover. With the chemistry they had, it's easy to see why he broke the rules. Even now, Jon hasn't found anyone quite like Ygritte. Thankfully, Kit and Rose (who play Jon and Ygritte) are dating in real life!

Question 15

How did Shae die?

Now we're really getting into the nitty gritty details. Remember Shae? Tyrion's lover, also a prostitute, and chamber maid to Sansa Stark? She was a gem, that one. She was able to see past Tyrion's socially unacceptable physical appearance and see the good in him. Tyrion and Shae were definitely a fandom favorite, but it was pretty clear nothing would ever become formal or official between the two. Shae tragically lost her life in the fourth season of the show.

Question 16

How did Hodor die?

These deaths keep getting worse! Although Hodor could literally only say one thing - "Hodor" - he had a soft spot in everyone's heart. He loyally served and protected Bran when he had no one else and no way of moving. But, as we find out, Hodor wasn't always like that. He was named Wylis and could speak normally, but had a seizure that caused him to speak and act the way we know him in the series. His origin story and his death are both heartbreaking.

Question 17

How did Tywin Lannister die?

Another oddly welcome and satisfying death! Tywin wasn't the worst Lannister, but he certainly wasn't the best. If you're like most of the fan base, you probably despised Tywin for how he treated Tyrion, how he forced Sansa to marry him, how he forced Cersei to marry a clearly uninterested man (which never actually went through), and how relentlessly unforgiving he was. We can all agree that he was kind of a badass, but also kind of an ass.

Question 18

How did Rickon Stark die?

The Stark name, at this point, is becoming dangerously close to never continuing at all. After Rickon's death, Bran is now the last legitimate male heir of Winterfell, but as the Three Eyed Raven, the chances of him having children are slim. Poor Rickon was so young when he died, and so close to getting to see Sansa and Jon again. Had her survived, five out of six of the Stark children (including Jon) would've been reunited at this point.

Question 19

How did Shireen Baratheon die?

If you thought all the other Game of Thrones deaths were bad, you probably weren't prepared for Shireen Baratheon's death. This one is basically impossible to forget, so it should be an easy one to answer. Poor girl, she wasn't even a teenager yet, and her dad was basically demented and devoted to the Lord of Light. As a child, she suffered from Grayscale, and was miraculously cured, but was never loved quite the same. If that wasn't enough, her parents definitely would've preferred a son...so her childhood was both short lived and sad.

Question 20

How did Selyse Baratheon die?

Selyse Baratheon was Stannis Baratheon's wife and Shireen's mother, in case you forgot (which you probably did). She was an odd one because she was totally okay with her husband sleeping with Melisandre - they really, really, wanted a son - and she was cool with letting her daughter burn alive as a sacrifice for a God we can't be certain exists! Not the greatest mom ever, but after her daughter's death, she felt so much remorse and pain that she actually committed suicide! The question is, how?

Question 21

How did Ramsay Bolton die?

Ramsay Bolton's death was hands down the most satisfying Game of Thrones death since Joffrey's. He might actually have been just as if not more disliked than young Joffrey. Let's not beat around the bush - Ramsay was vile, cruel, and an absolute sociopath. He did the worst possible thing anyone could imagine to a woman, then killed his own father, killed his father's wife, and, if that weren't enough, killed his father's unnamed baby boy. It's about time he died.

Question 22

How did Myrcella Baratheon die?

Poor Myrcella, she didn't ask for any of this! As a matter of fact, none of the Baratheon children (ahem, Lannister children) asked for such a life, but their family's enemies came for them too. Myrcella was actually in love with a Martell and was living happily in Dorne. She was long forgotten by the time she was back in the picture, and the next thing we knew, she was dead. Of course, Cersei Lannister really didn't take it well.

Question 23

How did Roose Bolton die?

Honestly, this death was one of mixed feelings. Roose Bolton definitely wasn't a favorite on the show. Like any good Bolton, he was cruel, unforgiving, and unfair. All traits he passed on to his lovely son, Ramsay! But I feel for Roose, he had a pregnant wife and an unborn son to care for, and he never got to see that through. With that being said, he was still a total maniac and took part in absolutely ruining Sansa's life, so good riddance!

Question 24

How did Osha die?

It's safe to say that many of the characters who died on this show didn't deserve to die, but Osha REALLY didn't deserve to die. Like many wildlings, Osha was widely regarded as unrefined, uneducated, and well, wild. But with Rickon Stark, whom she was looking after, she was sweet and caring and protective. For someone who's had such a difficult life and no one to care for him anymore, Osha was exactly what he needed. Her loyalty to him, however, cost her her life.

Question 25

How did Tommen Baratheon die?

Let's finish up with a season 6 finale death. With the death of Tommen Baratheon went the last of Cersei Lannister's children. At this point, Cersei's probably both very experienced in the grieving department but also an absolute mess. It did mean, however, that she became Queen again, but even she wouldn't think that was worth it. Tommen was sweet, soft spoken, and had decent intentions. Sure, it was easy to get in his head, but Westeros could use a gentle ruler.
