It is said that 10% of the population is into the same gender. Considering the fact that there are more women than men in the world, it’s a safe assumption that there are more gay women than men, so we can say that of the 10% of the population that experiences same-gender attraction exclusively, about 6% or 7% are female. Among them are famous faces such as comedian Ellen DeGeneres, professional wrestler Sonya Deville, and Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon.
You may think that 10% is a relatively small percentage of the population to identify as homosexual, and you’re right, it is. It is believed that, in reality, the percentage of people who experience same-gender attraction exclusively is much higher, yet many people choose to remain in the closet or even fail to realize that they are gay. The latter situation is actually pretty common, owing, in no small part, to the heteronormativity that has dominated our world since the birth of civilization. There is a strong possibility that somebody you know is gay and doesn’t even know it. In fact, you yourself may be attracted to girls and totally ignorant of it.
