Harry Potter will forever live in our hearts, and so will the legendary Dumbledore's Army. The wizarding world had never before seen a group of such brave and committed young witches and wizards come together to fight dark magic quite like this. Led by Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, Dumbledore's Army represented everything every Potterhead wanted to be - brave, clever with their wand, and noble. Its purpose: to practice defense against the dark arts in the wake of Voldemort's rise. This was a cause that many students, regardless of their house, got on board with.

You read about Dumbledore's Army, their ups and downs, and their adventures, in the fifth book and movie of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. You know and love the characters who fought against He Who Must Not Be Named. You might even play on J.K. Rowling's online wizarding world Pottermore. But just how well do you know Dumbledore's Army? Do you know where they first met, where they practiced, and who the members were? Can you even remember what their patronuses were? Take this quiz and see just how much of a Dumbledore's Army connoisseur you are!

Question 1

Who came up with the idea for Dumbledore's Army?

You should know that Dumbledore's Army was created in a specific attempt to compensate for the weaknesses of Hogwarts' Defense Against the Dark Arts program in Harry, Ron, and Hermione's fifth year. With the Ministry of Magic in denial of Harry's claims of Voldemort's return, Hogwarts' programs and management were completely overhauled in an attempt to almost brainwash the students of the school. This meant that the Defense Against the Dark Arts program was made entirely theoretical, leading to the creation of the secret practice group known as Dumbledore's Army!

Question 2

What group did Dolores Umbridge start to counteract Dumbledore's Army?

Dumbledore's Army was hardly a secret, and newly ministry-appointed headmaster of Hogwarts, Dolores Umbridge, didn't enjoy that students were going over her head to practice defense against the dark arts. Students and teachers alike were noticing suspicious behavior coming from students in Dumbledore's Army, and so Umbridge got together a group of students - snitches, basically - to investigate and follow any suspicious students and report them to her. One guess as to who was a part of this group? That's right: Slytherins.

Question 3

Where did Dumbledore's Army meet for the very first time?

The golden trio knew that what they were doing was risky - if Dolores Umbridge or any of her Inquisitorial Squad snitches found out, they could be expelled from Hogwarts. Without Dumbledore as headmaster to protect them, this made their assemblies especially tricky to organize. Their very first meeting was just about explaining their idea and seeing how many people would want to sign up, but the meeting location was strategic, as it couldn't happen just anywhere... wouldn't want to ruin something before it even starts!

Question 4

Who taught Dumbledore's Army?

There could be no Dumbledore's Army without a teacher, someone skilled and experience in Defense Against the Dark Arts, to teach the students of Hogwarts how to use defensive spells and charms. Dumbledore's Army relied heavily on their teacher, who was no stranger to facing off with some really, really dark wizards. Who better to teach other students how to cast destruction, disarming, and immobilizing spells? He even managed to get a good few of the students to produce patronuses!

Question 5

Who came up with the name "Dumbledore's Army"?

Although Hermione initiated the idea of creating a practical study group for Defense Against the Dark Arts, the golden trio was responsible for recruiting members, and Harry Potter taught the group, it was someone else entirely who came up with the official name for the group! There were a few ideas before getting to Dumbledore's Army, but that name was eventually chosen because the group knew how fearful the ministry of magic was that Dumbledore was actually raising an army to overthrow and take over the ministry.

Question 6

What was the first proposed name for Dumbledore's Army?

Before getting the name final name for Dumbledore's Army, proposed by none other than Ginny Weasley, there was another option for a name. This one was actually first suggested by Cho Chang, the Ravenclaw who Harry Potter had a longtime crush on and who had briefly dated Cedric Diggory. After joining the group established by the golden trio, she and Ginny Weasley went about discussing name options. Cho's first proposition wasn't the one used, but it helped Ginny come up with "Dumbledore's Army".

Question 7

In the books, who found the Room of Requirement for Dumbledore's Army to practice in?

Because of the decrees preventing students from being allowed to assemble or form groups, and because the crazy Dolores Umbridge and her Inquisitorial Squad were roaming the hallways looking to get people in trouble, Dumbledore's Army couldn't meet in public places on Hogwarts grounds. This meant they were left with very few options.

Question 8

What charm did Hermione use to communicate meeting times to members of Dumbledore's Army?

Things were never easy for Dumbledore's Army. Their meeting space was secret, and they couldn't be followed to it. Their instruction was unconventional at best, since they couldn't turn to any outside mentorship. This also meant, of course, that they couldn't even talk about what they were doing, for fear of being overheard and outed. This mean they needed an inconspicuous way of communicating meeting times and dates. So, Hermione, clever as ever, charmed coins for each member to display the next meeting time and date.

Question 9

Who was responsible for snitching on Dumbledore's Army?

When the students got together to sign up and join Dumbledore's Army in the little tavern of Hog's Head, they thought they were just signing up on a piece of parchment paper as a formality. What they didn't know is that Hermione, clever as ever, had jinxed the parchment. Because they needed to maintain absolute secrecy, she placed a spell on it so that anyone who signed the parchment and betrayed the group would be marked by the word "SNEAK" in boils on their forehead.

Question 10

What was special about the quill Umbridge used to punish students of Dumbledore's Army?

After being exposed by Marietta Edgecomb, a friend that Cho Chang dragged to Dumbledore's Army practices, the students of the group were, of course, subject to punishment. They had infringed one of the biggest rules imposed by Umbridge, and fed into the paranoia of the Ministry of Magic. As punishment, new headmaster and high inquisitor Umbridge made all of those students write lines. In Harry's case, it was " I will not tell lies". But something particular about this quill turned the punishment into torture.

Question 11

Who took over Dumbledore's Army after Harry left Hogwarts?

Dumbledore's Army was seemingly short-lived at first, as Marietta Edgecombe's betrayal led to the disbanding of the group's practices. With Albus Dumbledore eventually reinstated as Headmaster, the issues in the Defense Against the Dark Arts department were resolved, making Dumbledore's Army obsolete. However, their sixth year marked the death of Albus Dumbledore, and their seventh year marked Harry, Ron, and Hermione's departure from Hogwarts to hunt and destroy Voldemort's horcruxes. These events led students at Hogwarts to reinstate Dumbledore's Army, led by a very special individual.

Question 12

Where did Dumbledore's Army practice?

This part was probably the trickiest part for Dumbledore's Army. After recruiting members at Hog's Head, getting Harry to agree to teach them, the group of students had to face the challenge of finding a place to practice their skills in peace and secrecy. Once again, they couldn't do this just about anywhere, since Dolores Umbridge continuously created new decrees and rules limiting student rights - one of them, sadly, prohibits students from assembling or forming clubs. Thankfully, they found the perfect spot to practice...

Question 13

Who was the last to master the spell Expelliarmus?

Expelliarmus is one of those spells that seems basic to us when we read about it in the books, or when we watch an adult wizard perform it in the movies. For students at Hogwarts, however, it's not necessarily a basic spell - that's what classes like Defense Against the Dark Arts are there for. Without a practical course, students had to learn from Harry and not an experienced professor, making the disarming spell a little difficult, especially for one young student...

Question 14

What is Hermione Granger's patronus?

One of the most important spells for young wizards to learn to protect themselves is Expecto Patronum. It produces a patronus, which can protect the witch or wizard who produced it from dementors. Dementors are, as you know, the guardians of Azkaban. In an era of paranoia and protection against He Who Must Not be Named and his followers, the Death Eaters, running into a dementor was not uncommon. Because of that, Harry decided to teach Dumbledore's Army to each produce a patronus.

Question 15

What is Luna Lovegood's patronus?

We know Luna Lovegood is a Harry Potter all-time favorite. Her sweet, easy going and positive aura is one that radiates out of her and follows her everywhere she goes. You'd think, based on her qualities of loyalty, humility and kindness she was a Hufflepuff - but she's a Ravenclaw, with the brains and magical talent to match. She even has a fair bit of courage in her, so it's no wonder she gravitated towards the golden trio and was quickly able to produce her very own patronus!

Question 16

What is Ginny Weasley's patronus?

Ginny Weasley is the youngest Weasley sibling and the only girl of the family, but she definitely stands out in other ways. Although she was initially defined by her crush on Harry - which adorably turned into a marriage with him - and the whole ordeal with being possessed and abducted by Lord Voldemort as Tom Riddle, she turned into quite a skilled and brave witch. This one is truly a Gryffindor, and although she is a year younger than the golden trio, she also managed to cast a perfect patronus!

Question 17

What is Ron Weasley's patronus?

Admit it, we've all wondered how in the world Ron Weasley ended up in Gryffindor. Although his older brothers Fred and George are not afraid to be rule breakers or mischievous, and his younger sister Ginny is an absolute firecracker, Ron seems to be the jumpiest Gryffindor ever (aside from Neville, maybe). Although spiders or three-headed giant dogs will freak him out and he's not always the greatest in class, Ron Weasley is, deep down, a brave and talented wizard. He also managed to produce a patronus during his time with Dumbledore's Army!

Question 18

What is Cho Chang's patronus?

Let's be honest here, we all thought it was over and done with for any Harry and Cho interactions after what happened at the Triwizard Tournament the year before Dumbledore's Army was founded. You know, when she went to the Yule Ball with Hufflepuff and Triwizard Tournament participant Cedric Diggory, who was later killed by Lord Voldemort himself? Well, apparently she kept her faith in Harry, because the bright Ravenclaw joined Dumbledore's Army and eventually, like most others, produced her first patronus!

Question 19

Where did some members of Dumbledore's Army go to fight Death Eaters over a prophecy?

Although Dumbledore's Army had been disbanded and was being punished by the horrible Dolores Umbridge, their intentions of fighting dark witches and wizards was by no means lessened. While Umbridge was trying to extract information from the members of the group, Harry was having visions - you know, the ones that he routinely got because of his mind connection to Lord Voldemort - about his godfather, Sirius Black, being tortured somewhere in the Ministry of Magic. Determined to save him, he and a few key members of Dumbledore's Army went to fight Death Eaters.

Question 20

How did Dumbledore's Army get to the ministry of magic?

Anyone who knows the world of Harry Potter knows that the Ministry of Magic is located in London, and Hogwarts is definitely not. Ron's father being a Ministry worker, and Harry having been to a hearing at the Ministry of Magic, the group was well aware of where to go... but not how to get there. Hogwarts is quite far from where they needed to go, and students are not permitted to leave the campus, making their escape both secretive and difficult.

Question 21

Who died at the Battle of the Department of Mysteries?

The Battle of the Department of Mysteries wasn't all thrill and glory. When Harry, Hermione, Ron, Neville, Luna, and Ginny went to the Ministry of Magic to save Harry's godfather, they were going off of and placing complete faith in Harry's dreams and visions, trusting that they were real. They also didn't know just how many doors and tests they would face within the Ministry, nor did they expect Death Eaters to appear and fight them. Thankfully, the Order of the Phoenix showed up as back up, but it didn't end without someone's death...

Question 22

Who helped Dumbledore escape being arrested by Cornelius Fudge?

Let's face it, Dumbledore is the coolest wizard to ever grace the world of Harry Potter. No one is quite as powerful, and, as Kingsley Shacklebolt put it, he's got style. When news broke that students were practicing Defense Against the Dark Arts in secret and against the rules - seemingly confirming the fear that Dumbledore was raising an army - the headmaster took complete responsibility for their actions. The only problem is this warranted his arrest, which is avoided by escaping with more class than anyone could imagine.

Question 23

Who was doubtful of Harry when he started by teaching Dumbledore's Army "expelliarmus"?

Dumbledore's Army was unconventional at best. Harry was actually teaching members who not only came from several different houses, but who came from several different years. It was definitely a mix and match of students who were at different levels in their magic education - so Harry started slow, with a simple disarming spell. One student in particular thought this was a little too easy; to which Harry responded that it was the spell that saved his life from Voldemort the year before.

Question 24

Where did Harry and Hermione take Umbridge when they were trying to distract her from finding out about their escape plan?

When they were turned in to Professor Dolores Umbridge and their practice was busted, Dumbledore's Army had reinforced the Ministry of Magic's suspicions that Dumbledore was hiding a secret weapon somewhere - and she was convinced that Dumbledore's Army knew about it. When the golden trio plotted to distract Umbridge to be able to use her chimney with floo powder to reach Sirius Black, she found out, and to maintain the ruse, they pretended that the secret weapon was hidden somewhere in Hogwarts...

Question 25

What was the last battle fought by Dumbledore's Army?

Dumbledore's Army did more than anyone would expect from students. They faced off with adult Death Eater witches and wizards, threw a Ministry-sent witch off their trail, and managed to learn how to cast patronuses well before they were expected to. Beyond this, they fought in a good few battles alongside some of the best witches and wizards in the Order of the Phoenix, for their freedom and for the good of magic. Their very last battle as Dumbledore's Army is one that marked the wizarding world forever.
