For those of us that grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, we had no idea that we would be among the last of the generations to experience this childhood rite of passage. There was a time when cartoons were only shown on cable or broadcast television on Saturday morning starting early, or sometimes after school during the weekdays. But it was Saturday mornings where children's animated entertainment dominated, starting very early in the morning on virtually all the stations and continuing throughout the early afternoon.
Nowadays, kids have options to watch virtually any animated television show or movie at the touch of a button. With streaming technology and multiple kinds of devices, the market has been blown wide open. No one is waiting for Saturday morning to watch cartoons—they can watch whenever they want, even when on the go.
Yes, it is pretty cool, but kind of sad at all at the same time. When there were more limited options for viewing, it seemed like all kids shared pretty much the same experience. All the kids our age grew up pretty much watching the same set of cartoons. And a few classics like Scooby Doo or Looney Tunes actually survived multiple generations.
Whichever cartoon was our favorite tended to say a lot about us as fans. And even today, if we were to ask the right questions, we're pretty confident we could tell everyone which Saturday morning cartoon universe they belonged in.
