The expansive, culturally iconic Harry Potter series began with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1997) in the United Kingdom and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (1998) in the United States. Though the titles were different, they were the same book, and the beginning of a beautiful series that helped to shape pop culture as it's known today. The author of the series, J.K. Rowling, was initially denied by multiple publishers who insisted that Children's books might not be her forte - but imagine their surprise (and her joy) when she cleaned up at awards ceremonies internationally, and became one of the best-selling novels of all time, which sprawled off into one of the best-selling book series and even movies... Talk about regretting something, right?
Most people, no matter where they're from or what language they speak, know Harry Potter and at least a handful of his friends, family members, enemies, and even just simple acquaintances. However, what most people don't know is just how hard it is to actually pick the characters out of a line-up when the chance to get a good look at their physical appearance, or even be told very many things about them is taken away.
Reading a list of three simple words and matching them to the character they're describing is an almost impossible feat that only a true Potterhead could manage. Who wants to try?

Scars can come from a lot of different things and end up in a lot of different places. This character has a remarkable scar that's internationally known - all because of where it came from! It's also in a location that even if a person didn't know where it came from, they'd definitely notice it. This character also has unfathomable resilience - no matter what happens, they never give up, and they're always willing to get up and fight again. That's what makes them a hero!
Muggleborn, activist, scholarly! Who is this?
There are a lot of injustices in the Wizarding World, but one of the most prominent is the treatment of wizarding folk born from Muggles or a Muggle-Wizard relationship. It's not an uncommon thing to hear wizards who come from wizard families bragging about how they're better than Muggleborns - and often, even pure wizards who choose to support them are dragged through the mud! This character went through a considerable amount of mistreatment because of their status - and it made them want to stand up for others, too.
Arachnophobia, moody, hand-me-downs! Who is this?
This character has plenty of important traits, but one of the most memorable things about them is their arachnophobia. It's a common phobia, probably one of the MOST common phobias, but this character's was incredibly inconvenient because spiders came up in their life more often than the average person would expect. The majority of their clothes were hand-me-downs, which gave them a little bit of a complex, especially since other students at Hogwarts took notice - so understandably, they were a bit moody.

This character is one of the more arrogant ones introduced in the beginning of the series. They carry themselves with an air of importance that leans into them just coming across as haughty, especially since they make it known that they think they're better than everyone else. Even so, quite a bit of their unsavory personality traits take root in the fact that they're spiteful over the hand that they've been dealt. They sometimes embrace things that they don't genuinely believe in because they feel they have no choice, but other times, they do what they genuinely think is right, making them ambiguous, in a moral sense.

This character is introduced from the perspective of one of the many students who is in awe of them. They're one of the more popular students on campus because of their beauty - and their undeniably athletic skills, which become apparent the second they jump into a game of Quidditch. They play as the Seeker for their house, which is a prestigious position of utmost importance. This character also has a defiant streak that makes them go against the wishes of their parents to do what they think is right.

This character enjoys to collect things, and even takes advantage of the opportunity afforded to them by their position to make sure that they are able to get their hands on the majority of things that interest them: Muggle artifacts. To boil this character's personality down into a couple of simple words, they are whimsical and eccentric. No, really! This character is known throughout the entirety of the Wizarding World for being a little off the beaten path, and bringing a sense of whimsy with them into even the darkest of situations. It helps that they love eating sweets, all kinds of sweets - Wizarding ones, Muggle ones, homemade ones, store-bought ones... The list goes on! Their sweet tooth is strong.

This character is infamous among the student body at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for being a bit of a nag. They take the rules very seriously and enjoy nothing more than busting students breaking them, so they have the opportunity to give them an earful! The true reason behind the way they act towards others is bitterness, especially towards wizards, because their own life didn't turn out the way they wanted it to. Luckily, their beloved cat is enough to make things at least a bit better.

This character is mostly seen standing loyally by the side of another character. It would be totally fair to say that they're essentially a henchman, because they are always more than happy to carry out the orders given to them by another character. Their favorite type of order to follow is one that gives them an excuse to cause harm to others, however, because one of their most notable qualities is their ruthlessness. In fact, they're so ruthless that they take genuine joy in casting the Unforgivable Curses on other students.

This character tends to remain comfortably in the background of most situations, but that doesn't mean that they're minding their own business. They're incredibly judgmental of those around them, and the reason boils down to one simple thing: vanity. It's a common trait among their housemates, but this character's is so strong that they see themselves as above literally everyone and everything in the world. This character is known by their fellow students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for their love of taking photographs, even when other people don't really want to have their photograph taken. They're from Bulgaria, so they attend a completely separate school. That doesn't mean that Hogwarts students don't know who they are, however, because they're internationally lauded for their Quidditch skills, which are so incredible that they play professionally, in spite of their young age. The fame hasn't gone to their head at all, however - they're actually a total introvert!

This character lives completely freely from caring about the opinions of others. Their sense of style, their personality traits, their likes and dislikes, everything about them has been formed completely independently from the concern for others! So what if they're a little strange? It doesn't matter, in the long run, as long as they're happy and they do things the way that they want to. They're a completely free-spirited person, living their life the way that they see fit, and it's awesome.

This character is one of the only people in the entirety of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who doesn't have a favorite Quidditch team. In fact, this character doesn't even know that much about Quidditch at all, at least during their first year at the school. Their favorite sport is a Muggle one called football (or soccer) and they're incredibly well-versed in it. They're also a remarkably good artist, who's always willing to put their faith into their friends when the need arises.

This character is one of the most universally disliked throughout the entirety of the Harry Potter fandom - and the majority of people in the Wizarding World agree! They're a calculating person who's always looking for a way to twist any situation to their own advantage because at the end of the day, the only thing that truly means anything to them is taking care of themselves. They are quick to lash out and inflict harm upon others, choosing to go the most severe route any time they can.

This character is one of the most even-tempered people in the entire wizarding world. No matter how dire the circumstances are, they are able to maintain a cool, level-headed perspective that makes them capable of functioning efficiently. It helps, of course, that they're also remarkably clever - one of the most clever people out there, truthfully, capable of performing even the most complicated magical feats, such as transforming back and forth between the forms of a cat and a human.
Motherly, protective, fierce! Who is this?
There are quite a few characters throughout the Harry Potter universe that can be described as motherly, but all of them pale in comparison to this particular character. Their warmhearted nature makes them a wonderful parental figure to their numerous children - and even to those who aren't their children, because they just can't help themselves! However, don't let their maternal instincts fool you; beneath all of that is a powerful, fierce person who will stop at nothing to protect their loved ones.

This character is one of Harry Potter's most loyal friends, who has never shown themselves to be anything short of brave. Even in the most unpleasant situations, even if they are unsure of themselves, they are more than willing to step up to the plate and show their true colors. Unfortunately, their bravery is somewhat undercut by the fact that they are an incredibly forgetful person, often unable to remember what they've forgotten even with magical assistance, and rather clumsy, too.

This character is partially a Metamorphmagus, which gives them the ability to change their appearance at will, a power that they take advantage of so often that it's rather hard to predict exactly what they're going to look like the next time you see them! When combined with their peppy personality, that ability makes them rather enigmatic - always changing, hard to pin down, etc. Luckily, they're one of the most altruistic people out there, so they often use their powers for the good of others, rather than themselves.

This character has a defiant streak that runs incredibly deep, making them often shrug off the expectations of their family, the wizarding world's society, and even their school administrators! They are an Animagus, which gives them the ability to fully shift from their human form into an animal - a dog, to be specific. Their defiance, combined with some rather unfortunate circumstances, landed them a spot in Azkaban, the high security wizarding jail, though they didn't actually deserve to be there.
Perceptive, lycanthropy, compassionate! Who is this?
This character is one of the most perceptive characters encountered in the Harry Potter universe. Often without being given very much to go off of at all, they are able to read a situation or a person with astonishing accuracy, making them able to easily empathize with others and show great compassion for them. It helps, of course, that their own life was filled with undue hardships because they were inflicted with lycanthropy, dooming them to life as a werewolf.

This character was infamous throughout the student body at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry because they possessed the unfortunate combination of incredible arrogance, due to being raised as their family's only offspring, and mischievousness, due to simply having a bit of a mean streak. As is expected, those two traits lead them to being a bit insensitive towards other students sometimes, often having fun at their expense. They were skillful enough to conjure a Patronus in the form of a stag.
Animal-loving, altruistic, giant! Who is this?
This character has been on the receiving end of an undeserved amount of mistreatment throughout their life, simply because they are half-giant, making them visibly alienated from the majority of their peers, even well into their adult years. However, their kind hearted nature makes it easy to see past their staggering size, because they are always thinking of others before themselves, and trying to do what's best for those around them. They especially love animals, and will open their heart to even the most dangerous, unpleasant-looking, or foul-smelling creatures.
Captain, ambitious, Keeper! Who is this?
This character serves as the Captain for their house's Quidditch team at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Their position on the field is as the Keeper, meaning that it is their job to prevent the other team from being able to score on their rings, similar to the job of a goalie in football (or soccer, for anyone from the United States) and they take it incredibly seriously. They are ambitious, sometimes to the point of a flaw, and want to lead their team to victory.
Mean-spirited, Inquisitorial, ambitious! Who is this?
This character serves as a member of the Inquisitorial Squad, which is started by Dolores Umbridge during her time as Headmistress at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Inquisitorial Squad is known for committing acts that aren't exactly kind - but this character fits right in with the crowd and performs tasks easily, because their true mean-spirited nature has always been far from a secret throughout their time at Hogwarts. Part of their motivation, of course, is their ambition, which drives them to try to get in with the most powerful people.

This character is one of the few Irish students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that is actually mentioned by name and given a decent amount of focus throughout the series. Unfortunately, the majority of focus that falls on them is given due to the fact that they are a well-meaning but clumsy person. Many of their attempts at casting spells and brewing potions results in some sort of problem - so much so that they have been noted by a teacher as having a love for pyrotechnics.
Prophecy, teacups, glasses! Who is this?
This character is well-known among their students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for having large, thick glasses that look similar to old fashioned soda pop bottles, and for pushing them to do strange things during their classes, such as looking into the bottom of a teacup to find the answers to their assignments. They are responsible for one of the most powerful and valuable prophecies of all time: the one of Harry Potter, the boy who lived and the Dark Lord, Voldemort.
Gossipy, Won-Won, sentimental! Who is this?
This character is a pretty polarizing one among the Harry Potter fandom for a lot of reasons. They were even a considerably polarizing character within the series, splitting the Golden Trio up simply by becoming close to one of them in particular. That one was Ron Weasley, who this character infamously referred to as Won-Won, which was admittedly a bit grating, and when combined with the fact that they were a sentimental person that loved to gossip about the lives of others, it made plenty of people develop a strong opinion about them, especially Hermione.

This character is one of the most loyal people that Harry Potter encounters - although in a twist of irony, their loyalty to him comes at the price of defying their very nature and breaking their loyalty to another. Their live is spent mostly in servitude of others, until they are miraculously granted their freedom simply by secretly being handed a pair of socks, which causes them to gleefully exclaim that they are now free. Unsurprisingly, they use their freedom to continue with their loyalty to Harry.

This character goes well beyond being simply self-absorbed and nose dives into being a full blown narcissist. They truly believe themselves to be at the center of everything that happens throughout the wizarding world, and they view themselves and their offspring as being better than everyone as well, which is only boosted by the fact that they are one of the few remaining pure families out there. This mindset causes them to treat everyone they encounter with contempt, save for a select few.
Mischievous, poltergeist, prankster! Who is this?
This character is one of the many ghosts that haunts the corridors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and they are by far the most infamous of them all. While the other ghosts are harmless it not friendly, this particular ghost has a mischievous streak and loves nothing more than pulling elaborate pranks on students, other ghosts, teachers, administrative staff, and practically anyone they're able to get one over on! This makes them not just a regular ghost, but a poltergeist.
