Even Hardcore Fans Can't Name All These Water Type Pokemon

Pokemon is one of the most popular franchises of all time, gathering a huge following of both children and adults. One of the most highly contested areas of the series is the various set of monsters that players can catch as they go through the game! To make it easier, the developers decided to push these monsters into various groups, making it easier for people to understand which monsters have more strength than others! We wanted to go through some of the water monsters that existed in the first three generations of Pokemon!

Yes, that's right, we're only going to focus on the first three generations of monsters, as a lot of people don't like the direction it went in. We want to keep everyone happy, so we've pulled together all of the best water-type monsters from the first three games, and we think that this will be enough to test the proper fans out there!

So, we think it's about time that we got started on this quiz. We don't even think that the greatest Pokemon fan out there will be able to name every single one of these monsters, no matter how much they loved the earlier water Pokemon. Let's get started!

Question 1

Who's That Pokemon?!

This guys Pokedex entry claims that "Its tail is large and covered with a rich, thick fur. The tail becomes increasingly deeper in color as they age." This cute but angry guy is the first evolution of one of the first generation starter Pokemon, which means a lot of the people taking this quiz have ended up caring for this little monster at some point during their Pokemon training life. While he may still have the fairly small stature of his previous form, this evolution eventually becomes a huge monster, one that can take on many different monsters through a mixture of high powered water cannons and just plain old brute strength!

Question 2

Who's That Pokemon?!

This little monster is one of the starter Pokemon of the later generation of monsters, showing that the designers still had a good few ideas left up their sleeves before they had to start getting really silly with it! Yes, this little guy is a treat, and just like every other starter Pokemon, he will eventually evolve into a much bigger monsters, one that can take people down with some serious strength. In the meantime though, "Its highly developed jaw is so powerful, it can crush practically anything. Trainers beware: this Pokémon loves to use its teeth." Maybe don't try to pet him!

Question 3

Who's That Pokemon?!

"Its numerous tentacles serve as a powerful thing. It is known as 'The Gangster of the Sea.'" We don't know about anyone else, but this Pokedex entry really doesn't make us want to meet one of these giant jellyfish! Anything that is known as a gangster is likely not a monster we want to accidentally run into. That being said, it definitely makes us think that we would like the monster to be on our side. All we're saying is, if anybody gets a chance to add this one to the roster, then we think they should take that chance!

Question 4

Who's That Pokemon?!

Anybody who has played through the first game in the series will know about this monster, but that doesn't mean they remember its name! From such humble and pathetic beginnings, this mighty beast from the sea is known for a serious level of strength, or as the Pokedex puts it, "this Pokémon has a vicious temperament, so use extreme caution. Its fangs can crush stones and its scales are harder than steel." This monster is a perfect example of how growth can completely change someone or something, as the monster this guy evolves from is pathetic to the point of uselessness...

Question 5

Who's That Pokemon?!

"In this unique Pokémon species, thousands of Eggs hatch every spring, and then the male raises them himself." As we can see by this Pokedex entry, this is a monster that the designers created after taking inspiration from the world around them, looking at the ocean and seeing it filled with creatures that some people would probably look at as monsters anyway! Despite that, they've still managed to make this thing look cute, which is important when it comes to Pokemon. They really have to make children want to collect as many of these things as possible and that's the best way of doing it.

Question 6

Who's That Pokemon?!

It's no surprise to us that, when thinking about animals they could turn into monsters for the game, the designers went to crabs, as anyone who has ever struggled at the hands of one knows that their claws can pack quite the pinch. This is actually the evolved version of a much smaller Pokemon that, according to the Pokedex, is "a Pincer Pokémon whose claws can pinch with the power of 10,000 horsepower." Yes, anyone that found one of these things on the beach would do best to stay away, as they can certainly cause a lot more problems than real world crabs can!

Question 7

Who's That Pokemon?!

"Drifts in shallow seas. Anglers who hook them by accident are often punished by its stinging acid." If this Pokedex entry tells us anything, it's that if we lived in a world that has jellyfish like this, we don't think we would ever go out to fish. How could anybody relax with a fishing rod when they know there's a chance they may run into one of these bad things at any moment?! We wouldn't want to run into a real jellyfish, never mind this sort of monster that can literally throw acid at anyone it thinks is attacking them...

Question 8

Who's That Pokemon?!

Despite the fact that it would've been pretty easy for the designers to only focus on brute strength when working on the monsters that populate the fantasy world, but it's Pokemon like this that show they cared about the beauty aspect of their creations as well. Being a Legendary Pokemon, this dog goes above and beyond most other monsters, "traveling the world and purifying water wherever it goes, sailing on the North Wind." Imagine being the trainer that manages to capture this beautiful beast, and then think about how unpleasant people must end up feeling for locking up a beast like this...

Question 9

Who's That Pokemon?!

Another example of the designers directly being influenced by animals found within the real world, the Pokedex claims this monster is "an enigmatic Pokémon that can effortlessly regenerate any appendage it loses in battle." Anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of the things that live in the sea will know what this is a reference to! This was also one of the first Pokemon trainers are likely to be introduced to that doesn't evolve through leveling up. Instead, just like Pikachu, trainers will have to buy a specific stone that forced the monster to evolve into a stronger being for the trainer.

Question 10

Who's That Pokemon?!

As it's based on a turtle, it's no surprise that this little guy will "draw its long neck into its shell to launch incredible water attacks with amazing range and accuracy. The blasts can be quite powerful." Despite what the Pokedex entry may say, anyone that has played through any of the entries in the series will know that there's a lot more to this little monster than just a little animal that refuses to come out of its shell. Not only that, but as a starter Pokemon, it ends up turning into a very powerful creature by the time it reaches its final evolution.

Question 11

Who's That Pokemon?!

"Its hard shell repels any kind of attack. It is vulnerable only when its shell is open." With a Pokedex entry like that, it's normal for trainers to think that they've got an unstoppable force right here, but then when the monster is in the shell, it's impossible for it to cause any problem with the monster it has been pitted against! This might work perfectly for it in the wild, but no trainer is going to want to keep one in their roster if there's absolutely no chance of the thing causing problem for the opposing monster as well!

Question 12

Who's That Pokemon?!

This guy is the final evolution of a fairly weak monster, but if trainers stick with him, they will end up with this brutal monster by their side as they travel through the world in an attempt to become the greatest Pokemon trainer of all time. The Pokedex entry claims that it "is an excellent swimmer and its powerful muscles make its attacks extremely effective." We don't about anyone else, but just looking at this thing makes us want to catch one and have it on our side, just to make sure that it doesn't end up with a different trainer!

Question 13

Who's That Pokemon?!

The evolved form of one of the later starter Pokemons, this is a monster that a lot of people will have had at their beck and call. The Pokedex claims that it "opens its mouth wide and attacks, and if it loses its teeth, they regrow quickly." This is the sort of thing that makes a monster perfect in the wild, as it means they've always got a way of attacking anything that wants to make a meal out of them. That being said, this is a power that can ensure trainers will always be able to count on this monster's jaw!

Question 14

Who's That Pokemon?!

This is the mega evolution of a monster that was already pretty powerful, so it's no surprise that people want to have it in their roster. "The jets of water it spouts from the rocket cannons on its shell can punch through thick steel." This entry actually makes us worry that nobody should be making this monster part of their team, as nobody should have the power to fire water so hard that it would punch through thick metal. Just think about how somebody could use that sort of thing against other monsters, or maybe even the human beings in the world.

Question 15

Who's That Pokemon?!

This guy is huge, so we can understand why a lot of people would want to catch one for their monster roster, but we don't fully understand how it's possible that someone could actually use one of these as a fighter! According to the Pokedex entry, it "is the largest Pokémon yet discovered. When diving out of the water in pursuit of its prey, it makes quite an impressive sight." How is it possible that a monster this massive could ever fit into a battle on the street or in one of the various Pokemon stadiums in the monster universe?!

Question 16

Who's That Pokemon?!

Okay, so this is definitely the most obvious example of the designers sort of not even bothering to create something new and just completely taking an animal from the real world and turning it into a monster for the Pokemon universe, and we're not sure we can blame them with all of the other great designs they've managed to come up with alongside it! According to the Pokedex, "the protruding horn on its head is very hard. It is used for bashing through thick ice," so we can understand why so many trainers believe they're worth having around as they travel the world!

Question 17

Who's That Pokemon?!

An evolved version of a much smaller monster, it's no surprise that this evolution show a lot more brute strength than its original form. In fact, the Pokedex entry claims that these monsters "are short-tempered, and quick to challenge opponents to battle. It is said that no other Pokémon can live in areas inhabited by them." Not only does it have a lot of strength behind it, it can handle attacks and environments that many other Pokemon would struggle to last in. We say that anyone looking for a monster that will stand by them through anything should grab one of these!

Question 18

Who's That Pokemon?!

"Its central core glows with the seven colors of the rainbow. Some people value the core as a gem." It's sad to think that this Pokedex entry reflects the worries that many animals in the real world actually have to come up against. Sad to think that we can even have fantasy worlds in which people would decide to pull monsters apart in an attempt to make a bit of money in the process. Yeah, it's a sad thing that designers have to think about this sort of thing when they're creating monsters, but it's good that they're bringing it a young audience.

Question 19

Who's That Pokemon?!

Anyone who has ever seen the world that these monsters live in, it's no surprise that many of them have to try and survive in the world no matter what, which is why this monster, "is exceptional in its ability to survive. It adapts to any environment, will drive out its inhabitants, and claim the territory for its own." This Pokedex entry highlights how this guy is not only very good at surviving in the wild, but can also use its natural talents to be utilized in battle against other monsters, as it has learned how to be hardy and adapt to extreme change.

Question 20

Who's That Pokemon?!

"It is the male's job to make a nest by carving out boulders in a stream using the horn on its head." It may not seem like much, but we think this Pokedex entry is proof that the designers were really thinking about how they could make the monsters in the game just like the animals in real life, and wouldn't be surprised if they put a lot of research into it as well. Just like this monster, there are fish in the real world where the male will make the nest, although it's nowhere near as cool as using a horn to carve into a rock!

Question 21

Who's That Pokemon?!

Anyone that has an interest of internet culture will immediately known the name of this little guy, but for the people who don't and need a little bit more help, this is one of the many water-type Starter Pokemon that trainers can choose before heading off into the world! While the Pokedex may only describe its powers as being the ability to "use the sensitive fin on its head to take radar readings of its surroundings," anyone who has seen the final evolution of this monster knows that there's definitely some hidden potential within this silly little face! Don't underestimate it!

Question 22

Who's That Pokemon?!

While a lot of Pokemon start out looking pretty cute, by the time they get to end of the game, they've leveled up and evolved to the point that they look more angry than anything else, which is exactly what happened with this little monster! "Seadra has a bad temperament, and the quills that cover its body can render its victim unconscious." To think, that this Pokedex entry comes from a monster that was once so small and sweet, having the calm temperament of a small animal in a big world. Now, they're hard and ready to take on everyone.

Question 23

Who's That Pokemon?!

Being a legendary Pokemon, it's no surprise that this monster is in high demand by a lot of trainers, as it would mean they control one of the most powerful monsters in the entire universe! "It has the power to create massive rain clouds that cover the entire sky and bring about torrential downpours." This Pokémon saved people who were affected by droughts. This Pokedex entry is enough to make us want this monster in our roster, just to say that we are in control of a monster that can literally save entire villages from a drought if it wants to.

Question 24

Who's That Pokemon?!

While a lot of the monsters in the Pokemon world are designed to either look cute or strong, we always liked the monsters that were a little weirder than the rest, offering a bit of comedy in an otherwise rather serious world! "Uses mysterious powers to perform various attacks. Psyduck constantly struggles with a headache." We can't be the only one who laughed when we read this entry into the Pokedex, thinking about this poor monster that can't unleash its full power without constantly having to go through the pain of headaches. Seriously, there's no chance we would pick that life!

Question 25

Who's That Pokemon?!

Anyone that looks at this monster obviously isn't thinking about it causing a lot of problems, but it does have the ability to evolve into some very powerful monsters! That being said, the trainers will have to put up with a lot of average strength before they can have some of the more powerful Pokemon out there, with the Pokedex entry stating that "it has no arms, but its tail makes it a strong swimmer." Sure, it has no arms, but the strength in that tail is just a look at the potential that is hidden in this little cute monster.

Question 26

Who's That Pokemon?!

Anyone that has played the Pokemon games knows that this little guy eventually evolves into a total beast, but in the meantime, trainers have to put up with a pretty puny monster that is essentially just the equivalent of a real world crab... As the Pokedex entry puts it, "living on sandy beaches in burrows it digs, it can grow back its pincers if they break off in battle." We don't know about everyone else, but that doesn't sound like the sort of monster we'd want in pour roster when heading out on an adventure that might see us facing some real monsters.

Question 27

Who's That Pokemon?!

The final evolution of one of the starter Pokemon, this is a perfect look at just how big they can end up being, no matter how small and cute they often tend to be at the start! "Once this monster has clamped its powerful jaws around an opponent, it won't let go until the opponent is defeated." Strong words from the Pokedex there! In a world that is run by those who have the strongest Pokemon, it would seem that a monster like this which never gives up would be the smartest move for anyone wanting to climb the trainer ranks!

Question 28

Who's That Pokemon?!

"Its highly developed muscles allow it to move efficiently on land, but it is even more agile in water." When we think about it, this Pokedex entry is pointing out that this is quite possibly one of the most dangerous monsters out there. We don't know about anyone else, but we don't think there's anything out there that is as dangerous as a powerful animal that can move fast over both land and water. This is the sort of monster that trainers need to make sure that they can take on any Pokemon, whether they be on land or in the sea.

Question 29

Who's That Pokemon?!

One of the things we always enjoyed about the later games in the Pokemon series is the fact that they started to show how human beings could use the monsters outside of forcing them to fight. Don't get me wrong, the captivity part of both sides is pretty unpleasant when people actually think about it, but its Pokedex entries like "It is able to easily drag large stone over 1 ton. It is also able to see through cloudy waters and detect approaching storms with its fin," show us that these monsters could make human life so much easier in general.

Question 30

Who's That Pokemon?!

"Because all they seem to do is splash around, some consider them weak, but they're actually a hardy Pokémon that can survive in water no matter how unclean it is." This Pokedex entry shows how pointless this monster is when it comes to fighting, but it seems that in the wild they're able to survive a lot more than many other fish monsters. That being said, if people catch one of these and they can be bothered to slowly train it up by swapping it out, they will end up with one of the most powerful monsters in the game...

Question 31

Who's That Pokemon?!

We've already commented on the fact that a lot of the monsters designed were made to look either cute or strong, but the more interesting designs were those that look neither, which is why it's sad to see the entry that says this monster is "often ignored because of the disheveled appearance of its fins and body." Not only will it eventually evolve into a better monster anyway, we think that this Pokemon deserves just as much attention as any other. no matter how it may look. Before the designers came up with this one, people were catching living toxic waste and were fine with it!

Question 32

Who's That Pokemon?!

"Its long, beautiful pink body is more vivid in the springtime." This entry is enough to make us wish that this monster existed in the real world so that we could watch them swim in the shallows. We know that there are enough sea creatures out there and that this monster was likely based on one of them anyway, but is there truly anything that looks this odd and this beautiful at the same time?! If this existed, we think we'd have to start believing that this thing was actually created by somebody and not just a product of random design.

Question 33

Who's That Pokemon?!

"It spouts water out of its nose and becomes lethargic when its body becomes dry." Is it just us, or is this Pokedex entry pretty much the saddest thing we've seen so far? The concept of this big monster, this lovable beast, becoming upset when he's not surrounded by water, is pretty sad! This becomes even more sad when you think about the fact that these things will be pulled from their home and into a Pokeball to then be forced into fighting while on the ground, where there isn't enough water to keep this monster happy at all right?!

Question 34

Who's That Pokemon?!

While there are a lot of Pokemon out there that people don't like because of their odd form, we don't think that this one should be on the list, just because of this brilliant little fact that can be found in the Pokedex entry about the monster! "Castform is able to transform its appearance depending on the weather. It uses the power of nature to transform in order to protect its small body." All we're saying is, if we were able to have a pet that changed its form based on what weather was around it, we would definitely get one.

Question 35

Who's That Pokemon?!

We've already commented that we couldn't imagine many of these monsters actually existing in the real world, but if we could bring any of them into reality with us, we would have these. "This heart-shaped Pokémon earned its name by swimming after loving couples it spotted in the ocean's waves." This Pokedex entry is giving us some pretty amazing images of what could be, young couples just walking across the beach and being followed by these amazing little things. People would be able to get some pretty amazing shots of these animals just by catching them into a little jar.

Question 36

Who's That Pokemon?!

This is a monster that shows the designers started to take a look at different ways their established monsters could end up evolving into different things, rather than just working on brand new Pokemon for the new games. "It likes to expand its throat and sing out, drawing in other Pokemon from all around." Not only is it a new Pokemon evolution, but it's also a pretty worrying to look at how some of these monsters are able to take over others! If we saw animals doing this sort of thing in the real world it would definitely freak us out.

Question 37

Who's That Pokemon?!

"Its body is enclosed in a membrane allowing it to live on land. Its lower body is well developed, so it's capable of walking on two legs." This is the Pokedex entry of the first evolution of one of the starter Pokemon, showing that they literally did consider how these monster would evolve when designing them and coming up with the writing for the monster lore. Rather than just make a bigger and stronger monster that has some slight resemblance to the original Pokemon, they considered how it would actually make sense for these monsters to develop through life and get better.

Question 38

Who's That Pokemon?!

When the Pokemon universe was first created, it didn't seem like there was much cross between the world of the monsters and the world of the human beings, but this quickly started to change as the series moved forward, which can be seen in this Pokedex entry. Apparently, this monster is "able to soften human anger and hatred by emitting soothing frequencies from its body." Interesting to see some of the monsters actually evolve to help and interact with the human beings around them, rather than just entirely being their own ecosystem. It was definitely a smart move on the part of the designers.

Question 39

Who's That Pokemon?!

We have already talked about how something with a shell that offers complete defense doesn't exactly work well for offense, but it would seem that the designers thought about this when designing this new monster. The entry claims that the "sturdy shell is not only good for protection - it is also used for clamping and catching prey." Yeah, there's no point in having a shell like this if its only for defense, right?! Not only that, but we think people would have this monster around for longer if they knew just how good the monster is that it evolves into.

Question 40

Who's That Pokemon?!

We love the Pokedex entry on this guy, as it says they "will instinctively sneak into rocky holes. It locks onto opponents with its leg suckers, then rams them with its rock-hard head." We're not sure why, but this whole thing just actually sounds pretty silly to us if we're honest. We're sure we wouldn't like to be hit in the head by it, but the fact that this is the primary form of attack is funny. We can just see it now, rushing out of a sneaky little hole in the rocks to run forward and headbutt something in the face...
