Even Diehard Pokemon Fans Can't Tell Which Ones Are Part Of The Original 151. Who Can?

There are so many Pokemon out there in the world right now after tons of games, shows, movies, toys...it would be pointless to count. I mean, one could count them all and maybe even catch them all, but Pokemon are always evolving and there are always new ones coming out...even after over 20 years of sales and controversial trading and gaming.

So, there are a ton of Pokemon. But there are only 151 original Pokemon. That is if one were to count Mew and Mewtwo. Hardly the point though. The main point here is that od all the Pokemon fans out there, I get the feeling that even some of the more diehard fans would not be able to distinguish all 151 original Pokemon from the various other generations. And I don't blame them. I don't fault them. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference from a lot of them either...But I don't profess to be a diehard Poke-fan.

I guess what I am saying here is...well, I'm calling out all those people who think they know Pokemon so well. Step right up and prove the knowledge each of you claims to have. If not even diehard Pokemon fans can tell the difference between the original and additional generations of the Pokemon below...then who can?

Question 1

Is Venomoth an original or next gen?

It might be pretty clear to each and every person taking this quiz that Venomoth is, in fact, a moth Pokemon. But unlike the moths that we're not supposed to touch because we don't want to hurt their ability to fly...we do not want to touch the Venomoth because it is poisonous. Of course, every Pokemon has a weakness, so if anyone has some psychic powers kicking around, that should help take it down. That, or someone could just simply throw a rock.

Question 2

Is Typhlosion an original or next gen?

What is interesting about this character is that, by part of the name at least, it seems as though this might could be a water character. I mean, Typhoon is in part of the name. But, so to is explosion a part of the name. And so what do we end up with? We end up with an explosive, volcanic Pokemon who is, thankfully weak to water. Strangely enough though, this Pokemon is also weak against the ground and rocks...even though it could potentially melt both.

Question 3

Is Tentacool an original or next gen?

Well, this guy is pretty self-explanatory really. Tentacool is just what one might expect from a jellyfish Pokemon. First of all, it is a water Pokemon. Second of all, it has those dangling tentacles and they can indeed sting. Which means that this guy, cool as he is, is also a poison-based Pokemon. However, much as this guy could sting, all it takes is a good burst of electricity to take him out. That or just chuck him on land.

Question 4

Is Steelix an original or next gen?

Steelix is referred to as the Iron Snake. I have to admit that I think that is a pretty cool title to hold. That being said, this iron snake is not very good for all that much. At least not when comparing its type with its weaknesses. This is a ground type of Pokemon. The iron and snake parts might have given that away. But it is also weak against ground type Pokemon...and water...and fire...and even fighting Pokemon in general.

Question 5

Is Spearow an original or next gen?

Well, if anyone knows what a sparrow looks like it should be absolutely no surprise that the Spearow is a rather tiny bird. In fact, it is labelled as a tiny bird Pokemon. So at least they got that right. Its ability is that it has a keen eye. Which is also pretty accurate to the real bird it's based on. And in terms of weakness...well, Spearow is weak against electricity, fire and rocks...all things that I think would be harmful to a common sparrow as well.

Question 6

Is Sneasel an original or next gen?

Sneasel seems pretty closely related to something like a weasel...and that makes sense given the name, I think. And it would also make sense that it is, therefore, a dark Pokemon. What doesn't make as much sense is that it is also an ice Pokemon. But that's not business of mine. In terms of weaknesses, Sneasel has plenty of them. It's weak against bugs, fire rocks, steel, fighting in general...and fairies. I don't know how a weasel-based character could be weak against bugs but...oh well.

Question 7

Is Smoochum an original or next gen?

Smoochum is an ice Pokemon with a psychic twist...which is certainly interesting. As the name might suggest, it is a kissing Pokemon. I don't think there are many Pokemon in that specific Type...but who knows? Regardless, there are several things that Smoochum just really is not interested in kissing and these would be her weaknesses. From some reason she doesn't want to kiss bugs, or fire, or rocks, or steel...and she doesn't want to kiss ghosts either...which I guess is fair.

Question 8

Is Sentret an original or next gen?

Sentret ends up becoming a ferret-like Pokemon once it evolves but at this point is a much more cuddly little guy. This is a scouting type Pokemon and I don't mean that it likes to go camping and set up a little campfire to cook on while learning to use a compass. I mean that its job is pretty well to scout out for enemies. That is pretty well all it is good for. It has a keen eye, it can run away effectively and is weak against fighting...

Question 9

Is Scizor an original or next gen?

Scizor is a bug Pokemon...which should be pretty clear just by looking at the creature. The specific type of Pokemon is, in fact, a pincer Pokemon. Scizor is, therefore, a good name for this guy, I think. More than just being a bug, it is also steel-based. The fact that it is steel-based makes its weakness very strange. It only seems to have the one weakness...and that is fire. But unless it's being rendered back into liquid, would not the fire make it more dangerous?

Question 10

Is Sandshrew an original or next gen?

Sandshrew is as pretty mousey Pokemon. Which makes perfect sense because it is, in fact, a mouse Pokemon that is ground-based. It can cover itself up with sand pretty effectively, and that is pretty well its only ability. Considering that, it has certainly more weaknesses than powers. It is weak against not only water and ice, but grass also. And here I thought that mice thrived in the grass because that was where birds would not be able to necessarily seek them out.

Question 11

Is Raichu an original or next gen?

Well, everyone should know at least where Raichu evolves from. This is the evolution of the Pikachu. That being said...who knows if that evolution took place in the original 151 or in the next generations? Anyway, this is a mouse Pokemon that obviously uses electricity. One might think that water could be a weakness for it then, right? Wrong. The only weakness that this guy has is the ground...which, I have to admit, just sounds very strange to the ears.

Question 12

Is Qwilfish an original or next gen?

Because Qwilfish is essentially a pufferfish, it has the ability to intimidate other Pokemon from time to time. I wouldn't rely on that ability alone, but that is the big one it seems to have. Much like the real pufferfish, this guy is toxic, so beware of that poison. There should be no surprise here that a fish, in the water, might be weak against electricity. In addition to that, it's also weak against the ground...Oh, and psychic energy if anyone has some of that.

Question 13

Is Psyduck an original or next gen?

Well, as many may have assumed already...Psyduck is, in fact, a duck Pokemon. Water-based as would make sense for a duck, Psyduck has a couple of abilities that one might think should be more focused on psychic energy of some sort, but that is actually not entirely the case...which is strange for a creature names Psyduck. Either way, as one might expect with a water Pokemon, this guy is rather weak against electricity. And while this may be unexpected, Psyduck is also weak against grass...

Question 14

Is Poliwag an original or next gen?

Poliwag is a water Pokemon that one might have already sussed out looks very much like a tadpole...I mean sure, it is a tad larger than a tadpole in terms of a creature needing to be relatively visible to the trainers. When it comes to water, this little guy's abilities make sense with things like Absorb and Damp. And when it comes to weaknesses, they make a pretty good deal of sense. There aren't many creatures in the water who are good with electricity. Nor are they good with being tossed on the grass.

Question 15

Is Politoed an original or next gen?

Politoed is basically what happens after a tadpole stage of Pokemon. I mean, it is a frog Pokemon after all. That being said, the abilities and weaknesses from tadpole stage to frog stage are pretty well the exact same. As it turns out, Politoed can absorb water and can use the Damp ability. And when it comes to weaknesses, he can be a little touchy with regards to electricity as well as grass. Though I think a frog should be fine with grass.

Question 16

Is Pikachu an original or next gen?

Well, this guy is pretty standard, I'd say. There is no way that anyone could mistake the infamous Pikachu. I mean, this is the original Pokemon that sold the show to millions of children all over the world. This is Ash's best friend...even though Ash keeps him stored away in a Pokeball from time to time and doesn't really ever let him wander anywhere. It does really seem like a one-sided relationship. But hey, at least everyone thinks that they're great friends.

Question 17

Is Pidgeot an original or next gen?

Pidgeot is a bird Pokemon that has some interesting abilities when it comes to battles. I understand the Keen Eye ability. I mean, this Pokemon is essentially a giant pigeon. So having good eyesight makes sense. Tangled Feet though...that just sounds gnarly and not quite pigeon-like at all. Like most birds (with the exception of the Thunder Bird, I guess) this guy is weak against electricity. Also weak against ice and rocks. Who knew it was as simple as throwing rocks at this thing to win?

Question 18

Is Parasect an original or next gen?

Parasect is a bug Pokemon. The 'sect' part of its name might have given that away. In addition to that though, it is also a grass Pokemon. And even beyond that, it is also a mushroom Pokemon. One might think it would have plenty of ability then, right? Nope. Instead, it has plenty of weaknesses. This little bugger is weak against other bugs, fire, ice, poison, and flying. It looks nice and armoured but is apparently weak against other bugs. It's a mushroom Pokemon, but it can't handle poison...

Question 19

Is Octillery an original or next gen?

Octillery, as some people may have already guessed, is an octopus-like Pokemon. Given that, it is clearly water-based. But there is a certain category of octopus as well that this Pokemon fits under. It is a jet Pokemon. Given that it is a water Pokemon, we can all assume that there is a weakness to electricity, but there also happens to be a weakness to grass...which sounds like I mean something else, I think. My favorite ability of this Pokemon is that it is moody...

Question 20

Is Noctowl an original or next gen?

Noctowl is obviously a bird Pokemon. That should not be too hard to notice. It has some interesting abilities though. Aside from its keen eye...which does make a world of sense. I mean, it can scoop a mouse out of the darkness like no business. But in addition to that...this Pokemon has the ability of insomnia...which I didn't think was much of an ability. And sure, an owl is nocturnal, but let it sleep sometimes. It's weak to electricity and ice...and I guess a rock does the trick too.

Question 21

Is Ninetales an original or next gen?

Well, isn't Ninetales an exciting sort of Pokemon? Instead of nine lives, like a cat, this Pokemon has nine tails. And given the spelling of the name, apparently, this Pokemon also has nine tails. I'm not sure what those stories are about but it seems there are nine of them. Technically, this is a fox type Pokemon as well as a fire-based Pokemon. Given that it is fire-based, water is obviously a good way of taking Ninetales out. Apparently, rocks and the ground both work too.

Question 22

Is Nidoqueen an original or next gen?

It is absolutely amazing, the number of Pokemon who have to deal with the ground being a constant weakness. I don't understand how even Nidoqueen has this same issue. She's a queen for goodness sake. How could the ground be that much of an issue? Especially since she is a drill Pokemon. One would think she could be ok with the ground. Watch out though. This Pokemon is also poisonous. Just use water, ice, or some psychic ability to take this queen down.

Question 23

Is Meganium an original or next gen?

Meganium is a very interesting Pokemon in that it is an herb Pokemon. Like parsley or thyme, I guess. Its only ability? To overgrow. I guess it plans on choking out other Pokemon with a mess of weeds. Either way, this sort of Pokemon has a lot of enemies, as it turns out. I mean, this thing is weak against bugs, ice, fire, poison...even flying. I guess it would be uprooted if it went flying, so that makes sense. But it seems there are very few Pokemon this thing is not weak against.

Question 24

Is Marill an original or next gen?

Marill is one of the many water Pokemon out there in the world. But more than that, she also happens to be a fairy Pokemon as well. And the category that she fits into is "Aqua Mouse". There are some interesting classifications in the Pokemon universe, I have to say. What is interesting about this specific creature is her abilities. Both have to do with her size. Huge Power and Thick Fat are her powers...I'm not sure how that works. And in spite of her jagged tail, she is weak to electricity as well as grass, poison

Question 25

Is Mantine an original or next gen?

Well, now, this is a Pokemon that one surely would assume is not weak against anything to do with electricity, right? Of course, not every type of ray in the sea is electrified, but there are a few. Mantine is certainly not one of them. Weak against both electricity and rocks, this water Pokemon happens to be both a water and flying creature. It's classified under the "Kite" category...even though each and every one of its skills has only to do with water.

Question 26

Is Kingdra an original or next gen?

Kingdra has a hidden ability of dampness...which seems like a silly thing for a water Pokemon to have as a hidden ability. I mean...this guy is already a water Pokemon. How could he not be damp? That would be my question. In addition to being a water Pokemon, Kingdra is also a dragon Pokemon. But don't let that fool any Poke-fan out there. What is this dragon weak against (aside from fairies)? Why, he's weak against other dragons, of course.

Question 27

Is Jigglypuff an original or next gen?

Jigglypuff is like the Kirby of the Pokemon realm. At least, she is until one goes out to play Super Smash Bros. Then she is pretty well nothing compared to Kirby unless a player can get people to sleep before being vacuumed into oblivion. Either way, she is a balloon Pokemon, as well as a fairy. Weak against poison and steel, Jigglypuff has the ability to charm her enemies and put them into a cozy little sleep before she deals the final blow.

Question 28

Is Igglybuff an original or next gen?

Igglybuff is pretty well a childish version of Jigglypuff...which is hilarious considering how child-like Jigglypuff already is. Obviously, also a balloon Pokemon, this puffy fairy shares the exact same weaknesses as Jigglypuff, namely poison and steel. It even has virtually the same abilities as well by way of being cute and charming. Or at least by possessing the ability to cast a charm on opponents. Either way, this is still a misleading Pokemon, to be sure. One expects a walk-over, until the charms happen.

Question 29

Is Houndour an original or next gen?

Houndour seems like he would be a dog Pokemon, right? I mean...hound is in the name, so that's got to be the case. Nope. Not at all. He is both a dark and a fire Pokemon. And that's it. Nothing to do with dogs, no matter how much he may resemble one. What is interesting about this dog-looking Pokemon is that he is weak to fighting, water, ground, and rocks. I get the rocks, but all those other things are, as far as I thought, engaging to dogs. I guess that's why he isn't a dog Pokemon?

Question 30

Is Houndoom an original or next gen?

Houndoom is essentially Houndour's big brother. And by big brother, I guess I mean to say big descendant, since he is the further evolved form of Houndour. They are virtually the same though, aside from the amount of power they both have. They're both dark, fire-based Pokemon. They both resemble dogs even though they apparently have nothing to do with being any sort of dog type. They are weak to the very same things, and they have the very same abilities as well.

Question 31

Is Hoothoot an original or next gen?

Hoothoot is an interesting character, and in light of that, I decided to snag a photo of Hoothoot cookies. Why not? I'm sure they're tasty. Anyway, this is obviously a flying Pokemon that is owl-based. Much like its further evolved form, this Pokemon has a keen eye, and the ability to not sleep...which I would think might only make its effectiveness worse in battle. Weak against electricity, rocks, and ice, it's lucky that this Pokemon will likely see most others before they see it.

Question 32

Is Heracross an original or next gen?

Heracross, as it might be pretty obvious to see, is a bug Pokemon. He is also a fighting bug Pokemon. Which I guess could be kind of scary. I wouldn't want a bug to try and fight me after all. It is kind of strange though that this bug has the ability of "guts". I'm wondering if that's him becoming braver, or if that's him literally using his guts to fight. Either way, as bugs tend to, this guy has several weaknesses which include psychic powers, fire, fairies, and flying...in spite of his wings.

Question 33

Is Golbat an original or next gen?

Golbat, as the name might suggest, is a bat. He is both a flying and a poisonous Pokemon. In terms of abilities, Golbat doesn't really have many...or really any. He has inner focus. And I'm not entirely sure what that is supposed to provide him with but that is what he's got to work with. Beyond that. When it comes to what he's weak against, there are actually quite a few things. He's weak against psychic energy, electricity, ice, and the classic, rock.

Question 34

Is Gloom an original or next gen?

Gloom sure looks like a mushroom to me. That being said, it is not a mushroom Pokemon. It is a weed Pokemon, as well as a grass and poison one. I didn't realize that fungi were weeds as well, but here we are. Pretty well it's only ability is the power to harness the energy of the sun...but in terms of actually using that against an enemy, I'm not so sure. Aside being weak to fire and ice (as plants tend to be), Gloom is also weak against psychic powers and flying.

Question 35

Is Geodude an original or next gen?

Alright, I have to be honest here when I say that I think Geodude looks pretty damn cool. He just doesn't. I wouldn't want to get punched by him at all. He is quite clearly a rock Pokemon. He seems pretty sturdy and probably is hard-headed about a lot of things (pun intended). However, Geodude is actually very weak against a lot of things in the Poke-world. He's weak to fighting...to water, ice, grass, steel...and even the ground! The ground! Where his rocks presumably came from!

Question 36

Is Furret an original or next gen?

Furret looks something like a cuddly ferret, but it is nowhere near as vicious as one, so far as I can tell. Either way, this is apparently nothing more than a "normal" and "regular" type Pokemon with a long body. It can see very well and has the singular ability to run away. Considering all the weaknesses that Furret could have though, the only thing that it's truly weak against is fighting. Which does make it sort of a useless Pokemon when it comes to the arena.

Question 37

Is Espeon an original or next gen?

Espeon sort of looks like a cat Pokemon, right? Well, that is not the case, but if it were it would make sense that this Pokemon could just take out bugs like no Pokemon's business. However, that is not the case. As it turns out, this Pokemon is weak against bugs. It is a psychic, sun Pokemon and it is weak against bugs. As wella s the darkness, and ghosts. Given that it has psychic powers, one would think it could overcome some of these issues.

Question 38

Is Dunsparce an original or next gen?

Dunsparce is a very strange name. I know that many of the Pokemon in the Pokedex have some weird names but this one is up there, for sure. I mean, this thing looks like a bee but is actually a land snake Pokemon and the name seems to have nothing to do with either. With the ability to run away gracefully, Dunsparce is certainly a bizarre Pokemon. It's only weakness is fighting. And while Pokemon shouldn't have to spend all their time doing that...that's what the game requires.

Question 39

Is Dugtrio an original or next gen?

Dugtrio is of the mole species of Pokemon. It is a ground-based and steel-based creature as well. This thing should be able to attack three times every turn simply because there are three entities, but what do I know about the logic of the Poke-verse? Like actual moles, water and ice are not friends. A mole never wants to be forced out of its hole with pails of water. But I don't get why grass is a weakness...isn't that where they build their hills?

Question 40

Is Donphan an original or next gen?

Donphan is an armor Pokemon of the ground species type. And surprisingly, unlike most other Pokemon, he is not weak to his own type. That has got to be a relief for him. He's a sturdy Pokemon that is weak only to water, ice, and grass. Much like Dugtrio, actually. Very much in the same vein as the mole Pokemon out there. Which is nothing to be ashamed of. After all, he does kind of look like a mole even if he isn't technically.

Question 41

Is Clefairy an original or next gen?

As anyone (and hopefully everyone) may have noticed, Clefairy is a fairy Pokemon. I mean the clue is in the name after all. This Pokemon, unlike being a specific ground fairy or ice fairy or anything like that is simply just a true fairy, through and through. Much like Jigglypuff and Igglybuff, it has the ability to charm its opponents to sleep. And to play cute. It also has some additional and magical toys to play with. And its only weaknesses? Poison and steel.

Question 42

Is Charmeleon an original or next gen?

Charmeleon is quite clearly a fire Pokemon. If that was not obvious with the flaming tail, then I think some people need to get a new prescription. Its abilities are pretty simple. In fact, he only has the one and it should not be surprising that it's all about lighting everything on fire. That being said, it sort of makes perfect sense that water Pokemon would be its worst enemy. In addition to that, both rock and ground Pokemon as well...which I don't get because fire could just crack the earth.

Question 43

Is Caterpie an original or next gen?

Caterpie is not actually what people here might think. It is actually a worm Pokemon. I would not have guessed that. I would have thought insect or something, waiting for it to turn into a butterfly, but I guess evolution doesn't quite work the same way in Pokemon. Either way though, this is a worm and bug type Pokemon that can really only do one thing and that is shield itself with dust. It's actually amazing that it is not weak to more than just fire, rocks and flying.

Question 44

Is Bulbasaur an original or next gen?

One would think that Bulbasaur might happen to be a dinosaur Pokemon or something very close to that, right? I mean, that makes perfect sense so far as I can see. Clue is in the name. However, it turns out that this dino-like Pokemon is actually what they call a seed Pokemon. He is also a grass type and poisonous as well! Given that, its only ability is to overgrow. One might expect a poison attack or something. It's weak to fire, ice, flying and that dreaded psychic energy.

Question 45

Is Blastoise an original or next gen?

I always thought that Blastoise as sort of a dinosaur or turtle Pokemon. I mean it looks enough like both that either could be possible and considering what it evolves from, it looks quite a lot like a turtle. That being said though, Blastoise is actually a shellfish Pokemon. I would rather have shrimp, I'll be totally honest. Obviously, a water Pokemon, it stands to reason that it would be weak against fire...but it isn't. It is only weak against electricity and grass...

Question 46

Is Beedrill an original or next gen?

Beedrill, as one might very easily assume, is a bug Pokemon. It also happens to be poisonous. That isn't typically too much of a thing when it comes to bees, but it is a pretty special creature with one big ability...to swarm. I can't imagine having to deal with a swarm of particularly poisonous bees. No thanks. However, no matter how dangerous that might sound overall, Beedrill is weak to many things anyway. Psychic power, fire, rocks...even flying...which is strange for a bee.

Question 47

Is Ariados an original or next gen?

Ariados is as poisonous bug Pokemon that, by the name at least, I thought might have something to do with spiders. It just sounds like "arachnid" is in the name Ariados. But that is not the case because this bug doesn't have the eight legs to qualify. It still is in the category of long leg Pokemon though. It has the ability to not sleep and it also has the ability to swam. Two things I don't like. It is weak against fire, rocks, psychic energy...and flying...somehow.

Question 48

Is Arcanine an original or next gen?

I'm eternally amazed that there is no such classification as "dog" Pokemon. there seems to be a group for everything else but every time a dog-like Pokemon appears, it is just given an element to go with, and that's it. Arcanine is a fire Pokemon from start to finish and is considered legendary in status. Intimidating its enemies and causing flash fires, this powerful Pokemon is weak only to water, ground and rock. Even though I'm sure it has to walk on both ground and rock.

Question 49

Is Arbok an original or next gen?

Arbok is a poisonous snake-looking Pokemon that essentially looks like a King Cobra. Cobra is even the type of Pokemon that Arbok is, according to the detailed classification. One of its abilities is to shed its skin...which I guess is good for people who want to collect. Otherwise, this snake can intimidate, which does not surprise me at all. Arbok is has only two weaknesses in the entire wide world of Pokemon. Those are psychic powers and the ground...the ground which it must slither on...

Question 50

Is Wooper an original or next gen?

Wooper is an adorable fish Pokemon that is both water and ground-based. Technically a fish Pokemon as well, Wooper is pretty adorable and can work a bit above the water...even though it's only weakness happens to be grass. The accompanying picture here is Wooper sitting on top of its further evolved form of Quagsire, which sounds like a very unattractive character from Family Guy. Either way, this Pokemon has the ability to be damp...which is not surprising, as well as the ability to absorb water.
