Do You Know LOST Well Enough To Make It Off The Island?

Few shows in recent memory have captured the audience's imagination quite like that of Lost. The series, which ran on ABC from 2004 for 2010, had everyone watching with the friends, gathering around water coolers, and firing up online messaging boards to try and decipher the many mysteries that this show had to offer.

Throughout the early season, questions like “What do you think the monster is?” or “What’s in the hatch?” were being asked everywhere, making the show a cultural phenomenon that has shaped the landscape of television today.

Another reason that Lost has stuck in many of our heads for so long is that it happened to be one of the last notable series before online streaming became commonplace. So not only were there fewer shows to watch back in 2004, but everyone also had to tune it at the same time — meaning that the audience was always on the same page. And while we may get to enjoy watching shows at our leisure today, there’s unfortunately a bit of camaraderie and fandom that's lost in the process.

So let's take a trip back to the Island and a time when everyone was captivated by this show's ingenuity and see just how much you remember about Lost!

Question 1

What code must be entered into the hatch computer to prevent the word from ending?

One of the biggest mysteries of season one was without a doubt what might be lurking in the underground hatch Locke and Boone dig up in the jungle. The season two opener finally revealed that it wasn’t some deadly virus, monster, or alien sitting underneath the island, but rather a common man who was on a mission to save the world. Of course, he did this by entering the ubiquitous numbers into his retro computer. So do you still remember this life saving code?

Question 2

How often do you have to enter the code?

Of course, knowing a life-saving code won’t help much if you don’t know when, or in this case, how often, you have to use it. If you’ve seen even a few episode of the show’s second season, you know that the survivors clearly don’t have a long time in between entering the code, which is the reason that Desmond eventually tells them he doesn’t get out much. Later on in the series, we also get a few glimpses of what happens when you start to get too close to the time limit… or go way over it.

Question 3

Who’s the first survivor that Jack sees on the Island following the crash?

While there are a ton of character we’re introduced to throughout the six seasons of Lost, at the center of it all is the conflicted spinal surgeon with some serious daddy issues: Jack. Jack also happens to be the first character we meet when he inexplicably opens up his eyes in a forested area of swaying bamboo trees. He eventually stumbles out of the jungle and onto the beach to aid his fellow survivors following the plane crash. But which survivor does he spot first?

Question 4

Who brought the briefcase full of guns on the plane?

This briefcase pops up in the 12th episode of season one, titled “Whatever the Case May Be,” which happens to center on Kate’s backstory. Inside the case, we eventually learn that it contains four pistols and boxes of ammo, along with information on Kate. But before that, the survivors must deal with opening up a Zero Halliburton 5” Premier Silver Attache P5-SI, which is no small feat. It was originally discovered below a waterfall when Kate and Sawyer were going for a dip.

Question 5

Why does Rose want to stay on the Island?

Rose Nadler in Lost

Though she may be a minor character, Rose’s desire to stay on the Island sets her apart from the majority of the survivors on Lost, who are desperately searching for a way back home. The character is also part of one of the most underrated love stories on the show, as we watch her desperately cling to the idea that her husband is still alive despite everyone presuming that there’s no way he made. Of course, we do eventually get to meet Bernard, who is alive and well with the tail-end survivors.

Question 6

What is the “monster”?

Right away, the creators of the show knew that a story simple about people trapped on a regular, plain old island was going to get pretty boring pretty fast. Thus, they decided to sprinkle a number of sci-fi mysteries throughout the first season of the show, including why Jack’s father seems to be coming back to life, what’s in the hatch, and, of course, what is the monster. Upon first hearing the ruckus this thing caused in the jungle, many viewers suspected it might be a dinosaur. But were they right?

Question 7

Which character is the first to suggest that they try to hunt wild boar?

While finding clean drinking water is always the top priority in a survival situation — after all, you can survive weeks without food, but only days without water — the survivors eventually have to resort to hunting and killing their own wild game. While Jin and a few others focus their efforts on catching fish from the sea, the other survivors find out that the Island is also teeming with wild boar thanks to a late night attack. So which character suggests that they take up the hunt?

Question 8

What happens to the first polar bear they encounter?

As if a hatch, a monster, and walking dead people weren’t enough, the writers of Lost also decided to throw a polar bear into the mix for good measure, which the survivors first encounter when they’re taking a long trek up the mountains to try and send out a distress call for a possible rescue team. Luckily, this is a mystery that they eventually do answer. Though the reason is not very satisfying when you get right down to it, which revolves around “the Others” simply using them for scientific research.

Question 9

Which one of these “survivors” wasn’t in the manifest?

Before Lost ended up revealing the secrets behind many of the show's mysteries in the later season, things were actually fairly creepy throughout season one and two. Much of this tension revolves around “the Others,” or the people who would seem to be whispering in the jungle to the survivors, but they could never be fully seen or captured. The stakes were raised once again when Hurley was asked to get a count of their fellow survivors and discovered that one of them wasn’t who they said they were. Who was it?

Question 10

Who was the monster’s first victim?

Despite this “creature” coming across as one of the most deadly forces in the series, it only actually kills off one main character throughout the entire six seasons. That being said, it does wreak havoc on a number of minor characters, and pretty earlier on in season one, when Jack, Kate, and Charlie take a trip into the jungle to find the cockpit, they have a very close encounter with this elusive creature. So do you remember who it kills off first?

Question 11

Who is the leader of the Others?

The Others go by many names on the Island. Some call them the Hostiles, the Natives, while others refer to them as just that — “them.” But back in the day they were largely members of the Dharma Initiative who followed the mysterious Jacob, while working under his ageless intermediary, Richard Albert. But at the start of the series, the majority of Others obey the orders of one particular character. While this character comes across as pure evil, we learn that his motives are slightly more complicated than that.

Question 12

Who burns Michael’s first escape raft?

After it becomes fairly clear that there’s no rescue team looking for them — at least not in the correct area — the survivors quickly come to the conclusion that there’s only one way off the Island, which is via the ocean. Thus, Michael uses his prior construction experience to begin building a raft, which he plans to set sail on with his son in search of rescue. Unfortunately, his raft ends up being burned to the ground, and though there are many suspects, there’s ultimately only one perpetrator. Do you know who it was?

Question 13

What happens when Michael, Walt, Sawyer, and Jin set sail on their escape raft?

A lot happens in season one of the show. In fact, a good chunk of the time that the characters spend on the Island happens throughout the first season. Which might help explain why the later season of the show feel a little too jam-packed with content. So by the end of season one, the survivors have actually constructed a raft and set sail for the open seas with Michale, his son, Sawyer, and Jin being their only real hopes of rescue. Of course, we knew that things weren’t going to be that easy.

Question 14

How does Charlie die?

Charlie Pace on Lost

Many people believed that the show began to start going downhill beginning with the death of Charlie, who was undoubtedly one of the audience’s favorite characters. He was eventually killed off in the season three finale, though his death had been hinted at for a long time thanks to Desmond’s ability to see the future. But this wasn’t the only revelation in the season three closer, where we actually got a glimpse into the future ourselves, seeing that Jack and Kate eventually do end up making it off the Island.

Question 15

Where on the Island do the survivors get dynamite from?

Though Jack largely thinks that Locke is constantly wasting everyone’s time on his bizarre missions and belief of faith, he eventually does come around on wanting to open up the hatch, but only because the Others are closing in and it may be a source of protection to the survivors. Thus, they embark on a cross-island adventure to retrieve some dynamite, which they learn about from Danielle Rousseau. So do you remember where they travel to? Or rather, what vessel they get the dynamite out of?

Question 16

What does it say on the inside of the hatch door?

Like everything that happens on Lost, nothing is ever easy and straightforward. So once the survivors do end up using the dynamite to blow open the hatch door, they discover that not only is the ladder into the hatch is broken part-way down but that it also has this word inscribed upon the inside of the door, which is definitely not good news. Regardless, Locke decides to continue down into the Hatch without Jack's permission, which creates an even greater conflict between the two men.

Question 17

Who kidnaps Claire’s baby?

While everyone who survives the plane crash only has to worry about taking care of themselves, Claire also has to worry about the very real possibility of giving birth while stranded on a remote island. To make matters worse, the pregnant mother is at one point kidnapped by a member of the Others and drugged, though we later find out that this was actually to help with her pregnancy since infertility has been an ongoing problem on the Island for years.

Question 18

Who is the leader of the tail-end survivors?

After Sawyer and Michael make it back to the Island following the destruction of their raft, it’s not long before they see Jin running from the jungle with “the Others” in tow. Of course, we eventually learn that these grisly looking characters aren’t Others at all, but rather the tail-end survivors of the plane who have had a much harder time living on the Island than everyone from the mid-section. So do you remember which character is in charge of these few remaining survivors?

Question 19

What is Charlie’s last message to his fellow survivors?

Luckily, Charlie’s death was not without purpose, and the character actually ends up sacrificing himself to prevent the underwater Dharma station from drowning in hopes that it will aid in his friends’ rescue. On top of that, he delivers one last message to Desmond, warning him about the things to come, before ultimately succumbing to death. So do you remember what this message pertained to? It did, after all, end up setting up the fourth and fifth season of the show along with a group of totally new characters.

Question 20

What drug is Charlie addicted to?

Once a member of the one-hit wonder British band Drive Shaft, we learn that Charlie’s downhill spiral was a result of his severe drug addiction, which he battles and eventually conquers during his time on the Island. In fact, we learn that his addiction was so severe that he was willing to venture into the jungle with Jack and Kate not because he wanted to offer a helping hand, but because there was the chance of retrieving his last baggie of drugs, which he stashed in the plane bathroom moments before the crash.

Question 21

What is Swayer’s real name?

While this character comes across as one of the show’s primary antagonist throughout the first half of season one, he eventually proves himself more than a competent survivor who saves his fellow passengers live’s on a number of occasions. He was also searching for the man responsible for his parents’ death, going so far as to adopt his nickname as his own as a morbid reminder.

Question 22

What is Hurley’s real name?

Hurley on Lost

In fact, his imaginary friend even ends up making the trip to the Island with him, and it takes everything in Hurley to convince himself once again that he is not real.

Question 23

Which one of the survivors is a wanted criminal?

It turns out that there was a United States Marshall on board for more than just the simple reason of flight security. He was actually there to escort a very dangerous passenger back to America from Australia, which required him to carry a whopping five guns in tow should this character be able to lift one off of him. One of the greatest things about Lost was its ability to subvert viewer’s expectations, meaning that the criminal was actually this unlikely character.

Question 24

What did Locke do before he arrived on the Island?

John Locke on Lost

More than any other character on the show, John Locke had viewers constantly rethinking whether or not they loved this charismatic character, or whether he was going to get everyone on the Island killed thanks to his unwavering faith. Of course, no one could forget that this character was paralyzed prior to crashing in the Island, but do you remember what he actually did right before he decided to take a trip to Australia with plans to go on a Walkabout?

Question 25

In what language is the distress signal broadcasting from the Island?

However, they discover that a distress signal has already been broadcasting on a loop from the Island for 16 years.

Question 26

What is the name of the research group that used to inhabit the Island?

Funded by the Hanso Foundation back in the 1950s, this research group was created by Gerald and Karen DeGroot to conduct scientific studies across the Island. Though few members of the group remain on the Island, their stations are still in use by a number of inhabitants, including Desmond, the Others, and Mikhail Bakunin, who inhabits The Flame Station. Thanks to Hurley’s past, which has been plagued with bad luck, he has become extremely superstitious, believing that anyone who dies around him is ultimately his fault, meaning he also carries around the weight of the entire plane crash on his shoulders.

Question 28

What city did Oceanic Flight 815 depart from?

You probably remember where Oceanic Flight 815 was heading to since many of the characters on board were indeed American. But do you remember which city all these characters were in before the plane departed? Though they at least have an idea of what area of the ocean they’re in.

Question 29

Who protected the Island before his death?

The further into Lost the more the viewer begins to learn just how deep and how old the mysteries of the Island actually run. Question 30

Which survivor was in the same mental hospital as Hurley?

There were instances when the show began to make coincidences a little too commonplace. In fact, despite this survivor only being in a few seasons of the show, she had a tendency to pop up in a number of character’s flashbacks for seemingly no reason other than it was cool to see how the characters bumped shoulders back in the real world. But is the real world really that small? And did it add anything to the story to have this particular character cross paths with Hurley and later Desmond before they all showed up on the Island?

Question 31

Which character shoots and kills Ana Lucia and Libby?

In one of the most shocking turns of events in all of Lost, Ana Lucia and Libby end up getting shot seemingly out of nowhere while both are spending time in the hatch. This moments not only proved that the Others were the biggest threat in the series, but that even the fellow survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 can be turned against one another after spending enough time in their presence. Ironically, this moment also came out of desperation, as the two actresses who were killed off were also experiencing some legal troubles outside of the show.

Question 32

Behind which book does the orientation film for the hatch reside?

The writers of Lost definitely liked to draw from other works of fiction and weren’t afraid to include a multitude of pop culture references on the show. Sawyer is one of a few characters who is particularly fond of books, as he is often spotted reading outside of his tent whenever someone approaches him for some supplies. Desmond also is a fan of literature, which certainly comes in handy since there’s not much else to do in the hatch. And he eventually tells Locke that the station's orientation tape is hidden behind this book.

Question 33

Who ultimately kills the wounded U.S. Marshall?

Plenty of people didn’t make it out of the plane crash alive, but the ones who did were in surprisingly good shape. However, the United States Marshall who was on the plane in charge of escorting Kate back to the U.S. did sustain a number of serious injuries, including a piece of shrapnel lodged in his abdomen. While Jack does his best to treat him, it’s clear that he’s going to die a slow and painful death if not for this character who ultimately puts him out of his misery.

Question 34

Before Claire, what happened to pregnant women on the Island?

While at first, it might have seemed like the Others were all the more sinister for kidnapping a pregnant woman, we eventually come to find that they largely want to study Claire and the health of her baby. Question 35

What is the official name of the station located inside the hatch?

Even for the biggest Lost fanatics, this question might prove a bit on the tricky side. After all, there were a number of Dharma stations that we were introduced to throughout the course of the show. And though each name was as catchy as the last, they also didn’t have a whole lot to do with what actually went on inside the station. Locke even stumbles upon to a secondary hatch that’s not too far from their own, where he discovers that the whole thing is indeed an experiment. Or is it?
