Do You Know If These Pokemon Were Part Of The Original 151?

Students of the Pokemon Academy, gather 'round. Curious Pokemaniacs who don't go to the school, you can gather 'round, too. Today's a beautiful day - the Magikarps are carping, the Pidgeys are chirping, and we saw a Dragonite eating apples from our tree this morning. All indications point toward it being a beautiful day, and our favorite way to spend days like this is testing the intellectual wit of a budding young Pokemon master.

If you're immersed in the Pokemon world - fully immersed in it - you've followed the games (and maybe even the anime) through several generations of its releases, potentially from Red and Blue all the way down to Sun and Moon. That's a lot of Pokemon to cover, and it definitely takes a lot of time, which is why the title of Pokemon master is received only by a select few.

There's more than one way to test someone claiming to be a Pokemon master, but you can really only try one method at a time. So, for now, since you look like you have a Pokemon master's fire in your eyes, try this - take this quiz, and tell us if these Pokemon were part of the original roster of 151.

Question 1

Butterfree

Descending from a beautiful sky is our first feature Pokemon of this quiz, who may or may not be part of the original roster. We won't say, of course, since that would defeat the purpose of the quiz. Obviously, if you're a real trainer, you won't spend too much time guessing which generation Butterfree is from. This one should be easy, and this sentence alone makes it even easier. Is Butterfree one of the original Pokemon, or a later introduction?

Question 2

Haunter

Haunter is our next Pokemon, and it's making just as scary an entrance as it always does. This Pokemon happens to be extremely powerful despite not being fully evolved, which says a lot about it, as well as its evolved form, Gengar. But Haunter is the focus of this entry, and identifying members of the original 151 is the focus of this quiz. Let's see if you can do it again - does Haunter belong to the first generation of 'mons?

Question 3

Mamoswine

Mamoswine is an incredibly useful Pokemon in battle, being able to withstand blows with its decent bulk while dishing out inordinately powerful attacks. Access to strong moves of the Ground and Ice type is another great advantage, since there are several Pokemon with compounded weaknesses to those types of attacks. Mamoswine continues to make an impression to this day, but how much of an impression has it made on you? Are you familiar enough with the Pokemon to get this right?

Question 4

Pichu

Pichu is, of course, a member of the iconic evolutionary chain which features Pikachu as the middle chain. The question is, when was Pichu introduced to the mix? Is it part of the original roster, or is it one of the many pre-evolved forms of original Pokemon introduced in later generations? This might be a hard one for you, but that would only indicate your newbie trainer status. If you're even close to a Pokemon vet, you'll break no sweat here.

Question 5

Lickitung

Better keep your distance for a minute. Lickitung is super annoying, and has no manners. If you had a tongue like that, you'd probably have the sense to stay a safe distance away from everyone so as not to freak them out. But no - not only will Lickitung not respect your personal space, he'll even lick you with that tongue of his! So answer the question from a few feet away, just to be safe. Is this weirdo one of the originals?

Question 6

Cyndaquil

As you probably know, Cyndaquil is one of the Fire starters that you had the option to pick at the start of your journey. That much should be clear - what isn't so clear is which generation of the games Cyndaquil was introduced in. Are you having some trouble remembering? If you ever chose this Pokemon as your primary companion, there's no way you'd forget a detail like that. Take as much time as you need, but the pressure is on.

Question 7

Rhyhorn

Rhyhorn is stampeding into this quiz, waiting for an answer along with the rest of us. We can stay completely still while we wait, but Rhyhorn prefers raging around an open space until it feels like sleeping. Giovanni is known for carrying this Pokemon in his party, along with Rhydon, its evolved form. Hm, now which Pokemon game was Giovanni in, again? Was it Red and Blue, or one of the later ones? We can't seem to recall - can you?

Question 8

Snorlax

Snorlax is our next entry, and of course, it's coming into this quiz with a dangerous Rollout attack. With this move, Snorlax won't be inflicting much damage within the first few turns. However, if you let its momentum build, it'll soon roll over your whole team. But this doesn't have to turn into an all out Pokemon brawl. Guess if Snorlax is part of the original 151, and maybe it'll roll right past you and be on its way. Maybe.

Question 9

Murkrow

It's getting dark outside, and Murkrow has come out of the woodwork to see what's up. Don't be fooled by its low stats - while this Pokemon doesn't do much damage through direct attacks, its ability allows it to attack first with any non-damaging move, giving it an instant advantage as a setup 'mon. If you choose to battle this bird, bring a Pokemon who can end it in one blow. Before you do that, let's continue the quiz for a while.

Question 10

Machoke

Machoke is flexing, as he always does. When you're such a strong Fighting type Pokemon as he is, you can't help but show off your stuff every once in a while. The female Machokes love this, but we won't get into that any more than we absolutely have to. Instead, let's see how well you can keep up with your Pokemon trivia. Is Machamp an alumnus of Pokemon Red and Blue, or did Game Freak unleash him upon the world later on?

Question 11

Meganium

Meganium is striking with a fierce Razor Leaf attack, and we pity the poor Pokemon soul who's on the receiving end of the blow. While Meganium might look like a peaceful Pokemon, don't be fooled by the flowers it wears around its neck. It can use every petal to unleash devastating pain, and you don't want to experience it first hand - neither do any of your Pokemon. Let's avoid that nasty business, and instead resume our friendly quiz here.

Question 12

Caterpie

Caterpie looks like a useless Pokemon upon first glance. Then you take a second glance at it, and it still doesn't look like it could contribute much. However, if you could chance a third glance, you might see Caterpie for what it is - still not a very good Pokemon. At least it'll eventually evolve into Butterfree, though it has an even more useless middle evolution to bide its time through first. Anyway, which generation does this Caterpie belong to? Is it the first?

Question 13

Flaaffy

Flaaffy is bringing in a huge amount of static electricity to the quiz, enough to literally zap your socks off. That's a dangerous effect, no doubt about that, and you wouldn't expect it coming out of such an adorable Pokemon. Indeed, this static electricity is so uncomfortable, we're tempted to rush you into pressing a button fast so we can move on. But we wouldn't do that, not a million years. By all means, take your time, but do it right now also.

Question 14

Raikou

If we though Flaaffy up there generated a bunch of electricity, that's nothing at all compared to what Raikou is about to do. This ferocious hound has an inordinate Special Attack state, and its Speed matches it, somehow. He's a legendary Pokemon belonging to a certain series of games, though we can't tell you exactly which that was. No, instead of being spoon fed the answer, let's see if you can get it yourself - is Raikou an original 151 'mon?

Question 15

Bulbasaur

In case you were having some trouble with those last few entries, rest assured knowing that you have an easy pass here. It's Bulbasaur, after all - Bulbasaur! If you know any Pokemon at all, you have to know Bulbasaur. It happens to be at the very top of its Pokedex, but from which region did that Pokedex hail? Or, perhaps Bulbasaur is the #1 entry of the National Pokedex? What might that mean? Can you figure this one out?

Question 16

Stantler

Stantler, with its face and antlers, has strutted into this quiz a little late, and we can see why. Just look at the bead of sweat on its face. Either there's a gassy Grimer around here, or Stantler had some indigestion eating Sitrus Berries. No matter - while Stantler rests up in the corner, try thinking back and remembering which game you first saw it in. Was it Pokemon Red and Blue, or maybe a game from a later generation?

Question 17

Moltres

Look up in the sky? Is it a Zapdos, or an Articuno? No, it's a Moltres, and it looks like it's looking for something. Maybe it's searching the ground for the poor soul who can't remember which generation it belongs to. That's a long shot, but you can't say it's impossible. For practicality's sake, let's pretend that's the case, and just get this one right, real quick. Is Moltres a graduate of the original roster, or is it part of another gen?

Question 18

Venonat

Venonat might look like a peaceful little Pokemon, and it is, for the most part. However, if you aggravate it, you'd better be ready to run, if not stand up and fight. If you choose the latter option, don't underestimate this little bug, since it has access to a wide variety of spore type moves that can put your Pokemon right to bed. While Venonat can do a lot of things, it can't possibly belong to more than one generation of Pokemon.

Question 19

Groudon

Groudon is roaring, as tall as any Pokemon you've ever seen in your life. This mystical creature might be a treasure to behold, and catching it bestows an honor upon the trainer that he or she can scarcely imagine. Thinking about catching this Pokemon is one thing, but actually doing so is a journey within itself. It sounds fun, but tiresome. Let's raincheck that. For now, while we're doing the quiz anyway, let's just click on the right answer, together.

Question 20

Steelix

Steelix is among the largest Pokemon to ever dwell on land, which is saying something. You'd expect it, though - after all, its pre-evolved form is Onyx, who's a behemoth in every sense of the world. Onyx can also be a novel threat in battle, in the right trainer's hands, of course. Steelix, on the other hand, can wreak havoc upon an unprepared team in the hands of any trainer at all. What kind of trainer are you? Let's see.

Question 21

Togepi

Togepi is so familiar, it definitely looks like it could be part of the original roster. Well, sometimes things aren't always as they appear. Maybe - and we're definitely not saying that this is the case, at all - Togepi was actually introduced in the first season of the Pokemon anime, along with the rest of the first generation Pokemon and before the release of the second generation of Pokemon games. If that's the case, you already know the answer. But is it the case?

Question 22

Charmeleon

It's getting hot in here, and we think we've just found the source of the temperature change. Charmeleon is practicing its Flamethrower attack, and it doesn't seem to care that he's doing it indoors, where everyone else is. Sigh... Fire type Pokemon were never really known for their consideration toward others. Just think about the monster this little guy will eventually evolve into. Do you remember which generation it and its evolutionary chain members belong to? We all hope you do.

Question 23

Bellossom

Bellossom is blossoming into a fine Pokemon, worthy enough in battle to bring to any mid - to low-tier match. Bellossom has been around for a long time - long enough for you to potentially start questioning which generation it was first introduced in. If you're a rookie or intermediate trainer, you may very well spend a minute or two on this one. If you're a master, though, you're already on to the next one. Which one are you, after all?

Question 24

Croconaw

Croconaw suffers from huge pangs of rage, so it loves taking its aggression out on unprepared opponents with tyrannical slaps. Just look at it charging up his devastating slap here, mercilessly staring down the Pokemon destined to receive it. If you've never chosen the pre-evolved form of this Water type Pokemon as your starter, perhaps your memory might be getting a little fuzzy here. It's from a certain generation of the games, though we definitely won't say which it is.

Question 25

Nosepass

Nosepass is the midway point of our quiz, and you'll need to pass it by to move on. Do you see what we did there? Nosepass did, for sure. It doesn't miss a beat, this Pokemon. It knows a bunch of facts, including the names of all Pokemon, and it also knows which generation they're from. If you're anything like Nosepass, you'll be able to pass right on through without damaging your percentage. If not, that's not so bad either.

Question 26

Hitmonchan

Hitmonchan is always ready for a fight. We suppose that just comes with the deal when you're a Fighting type Pokemon. If you've seen this fighter in action, you'll definitely remember the sort of damage it can unleash on virtually any opponent. With its insanely high Special Defense stat, it can also withstand a super effective Special Attack before dishing out a devastating blow. How familiar are you with the Hitmon clan? Enough to remember which generation this guy is from?

Question 27

Snubbull

Snubbull is the lovable bull we all remember fondly from the anime, as one of the earlier introductions to a certain generation of the Pokemon games. Was that the first generation, or third? Maybe the second, or forth? We won't say, though we admit that we like having you guess. Snubbull is famous enough for any real trainer to know its generation, so we think it's a good test of knowledge. If you're a wise trainer, this'll be easy for you.

Question 28

Ralts

Ralts is another familiar Pokemon, so any veteran of several Pokemon games should be able to recognize it without much trouble. If you need a hint, think back on one of your rivals in the Pokemon games who carried this critter as his main battler. Of course, as the game progressed, Ralts achieved its two evolved forms - Kirlia and Gardevoir - and was given the ability to give you great troubles in battle. If any of that rings a bell, this one should be easy.

Question 29

Ekans

Ekans has a poor little Sandshrew trapped in its unbreakable grip, and things aren't looking good for our little mammalian 'mon. However, it's best not to be too worried about Sandshrew - it can take a hit, and once it gets out of Ekans' Wrap attack, one of its Ground moves can knock it out cold. It serves Ekans right for being one of Team Rocket's minion 'mons. Anyway, back to the topic: is Ekans a member of the original games?

Question 30

Ditto

Ditto is here, and you already know it's about to transform into something. Better sound out a Pokemon to inspire it, otherwise this Ditto will transform into a plain-eyed version of you, which is definitely not something you should hope for. Thankfully, as a real trainer, you have six Pokeballs strapped to your belt, meaning six options to send out in this battle. Wait - you are a real trainer, right? Not just one of those band wagoners who hopped on with Pokemon Go?

Question 31

Blastoise

Blastoise is ready to unleash an explosive Hydro Pump attack, so it's best not to send out a Fire type here. Really, you'll have a tough time ahead of you no matter which Pokemon you release to absorb the blow. Blastoise's Hydro Pump can split the roaring seas in two, like the staff of Moses. In all cases, if you can bear it, it's best to run away, but not before you get this question right. Is Blastoise an original Pokemon?

Question 32

Dragonair

Dragonair is mystically floating down from above, ready to bestow its light upon worthy trainers. If that's what you are, step forward and receive its blessing. But don't step too eagerly; if you are proven unworthy, Dragonair will start spinning around, and you don't want to see what will happen after that. Before acting too rashly, and in order to prove your worth in the Pokemon world, answer this question - is Dragonair a member of the original 151, or not?

Question 33

Breloom

Breloom is an all out, merciless threat, for one main reason - aside from being a Grass and Fighting type Pokemon with a ridiculous attack stat, it also has access to a 100% accurate Spore attack that will put any non-immune Pokemon to sleep, with no sweat at all. However, it can't survive many attacks, so it's more of a glass cannon type 'mon. At any rate, if you've used or faced this beast in battle, you've hopefully read up on it.

Question 34

Delcatty

Delcatty is a ferocious feline, with a huge Speed stat that allows it to run circles around most other 'mons. Of course, there's an assortment of other powerful beasts who outclass it, some of those being members of the original 151. Does that mix you up, or are you too clever - in the Pokemon sense - to allow yourself any issue here? Is Delcatty a member of the original Red and Blue roster, or was it introduced later on?

Question 35

Mewtwo

That's the piercing gaze of Mewtwo, and you don't usually want to be at the other end of it. When Mewtwo looks mad, and he's looking at you, that either means he's about to send you flying in the air with his mind, or he'll come to an epiphany at the last second that tells him you're a decent contributor to the world at large. It's scary, being around this much power. Let's not linger for long - is Mewtwo an original Pokemon?

Question 36

Carvanha

We'd never thought we'd say this, but we'd rather have a school of piranhas descend upon us right now than a school of Carvanhas. After all, piranhas aren't capable of unleashing magical Dark and Water type attacks that can send you flying from one ocean to another. All they really do is bite, though we don't want that either. If you ask us, right now the only thing we want is for you to get this question right. That's how much we care.

Question 37

Magnezone

Magnezone is a staggeringly powerful Electric and Steel type Pokemon, so strong that it remains one of the most popular Pokemon in competitive play today. While the metagame doesn't exactly revolve around it, its stats, movepool, and ability make a go-to support/offensive Pokemon in serious battles. In fact, if you still call yourself a serious Pokemon trainer, there's a chance you've recently used or faced this 'mon. If you did, you should probably get this one right, should you not?

Question 38

Nidorina

When you set off in a certain Pokemon game - we won't say which one that is, of course - and you progress a little while along the first few routes, you're bound to run into Nidoran, a wee little Poison type Pokemon. Nidoran (the female version) might not look like a powerhouse when in its initial form, but train it a while and it'll evolve into the wonderful Nidorina, who may or may not be a first gen 'mon.

Question 39

Pidgey

Pidgey is looking down at you from its little spot there, secretly giving you good vibes so that you can answer the question right. Pidgey might look a little cranky on the outside, but it's actually a sweetheart if you train it with friendship and care - not like that pesky Spearow, who always seems to want to snip away at things with its beak. At any rate, let's see if you remember which generation Pidgey is from. is it the first?

Question 40

Leafeon

Leafeon is a powerful Grass type Pokemon, with the bulk of its talent going to its Attack stat. If you manage to teach your Leafeon Leaf Blade attack, it'll be able to whip a good portion of its potential opponents into smithereens without wasting much time. Of course, this Pokemon is one of the potential evolved forms of Eevee, though we won't say which generation it belongs to. That's for us to know, and you to know too, if you're an actual trainer.

Question 41

Tauros

Tauros is, of course, rampaging into the quiz. All this Pokemon can really do is rampage around, it seems. It's as though its Tauros mother never really taught it how to walk, or at least jog. No - it's all rampage, all the time, with no breaks that we've ever witnessed. Maybe you're a more experienced Tauros trainer than we are, and you know whether this Pokemon ever takes a break. Don't worry about that now, though - let's focus on the quiz.

Question 42

Rhyperior

The ground is shaking ever so slightly, which means a heavy Rock and Ground type Pokemon might be making its way toward us. Just as we thought - Rhyperior has suddenly appeared in the quiz, and it doesn't look happy at all. In fact, it looks downright ready to start a fight, and you might be its ideal opponent. However, if you can get the question right, maybe the behemoth over there will back away. Maybe it will, if it's a nice behemoth.

Question 43

Druddigon

Druddigon is drunk with power, flying slightly above the ground just to freak everyone out. This Pokemon is playful, not super considerate, and quite powerful, meaning it can be a super drag to be around. Furthermore, its ability allows it to chip away gradually at any Pokemon who makes physical contact with it, which is ultra annoying. In any case, it's best to knock it out quickly and move on. Or, if you can manage, answer the question right and it'll probably go away.

Question 44

Poliwhirl

Poliwhirl is swirling right into this quiz, dizzying us all with its crazy pattern. This Pokemon does not pull any punches regardless of what sort of Pokemon faces it, and that's true of all monsters belonging to its generation. What's that? You need help remembering which generation this Pokemon was a part of? Aha - we knew you were a phoney! Oh, what's that? Really, we misheard you? Sure we did. Just answer the question, and we'll get to the last stretch.

Question 45

Geodude

We're finally at the last stretch of the quiz, and Geodude is here to greet you. This is fitting in some way, since Geodude is usually the first Pokemon you see when traveling through caves in a certain generation of the games. Of course, as has been the trend here, we won't help you out any more than that. The satisfaction of acing this quiz would never be truly yours if we helped you do it. Instead, do it yourself.

Question 46

Tornadus

Tornadus has caused a tornado, and we should have seen this coming way sooner. Now we'll need another strong Flying type Pokemon to unleash Gust after Gust attack until the winds cancel each other out, and that could take a long time. Better get comfortable, and take a few moments to get this one right. Tornadus is familiar since it's a strong competitive option, but is it also familiar as one of the original Pokemon? Only you can say for sure, at the moment.

Question 47

Vileplume

It smells vile, and we all know exactly what that means. It means Vileplume has made her entrance into this quiz, and she's about to stink the place up even more. It's about to get really bad in this question, so we need to clear the area as soon as possible. If you can manage it, get this question right in five seconds flat - is Vileplume a member of gen 1, or does it belong to a later Pokemon game?

Question 48

Jolteon

Jolteon has struck up a huge electrical current in our now windy, smelly quiz, so things are getting chaotic. Luckily we're almost done - the last question is the next one, but don't rush your way out of things yet. You need to maintain a good percentage if you want to cement yourself as a real trainer. So, take a long look at Jolteon here, and ask yourself - was this Pokemon around since the beginning, or is it a recent 'mon?

Question 49

Stoutland

The storm is starting to clear, thankfully. We don't need to panic our way through the rest of the quiz - we can take our time and relax. Stoutland here is a patient, loyal dog, and it won't pressure you to get the answer right. It loves everything and everyone unconditionally, and that includes you. If you love it back, you surely wouldn't confuse its generation, would you? That's us pressuring you right now, by the way - not Stoutland.

Question 50

Meowth

Meowth is tired and definitely needs a nap. Its actually been taking the quiz along with you the entire time, right behind you. We won't reveal its score to you, since that's private info, but you can bet it's quite high. Meowth is a low key Pokemon trivia master, after all. Hey, didn't you say you were something like that yourself? Or are we confusing you with someone else? Let's find out - one last time, is this Pokemon from gen 1?
