Do You Know Angel Better Than Buffy, Cordy, And Darla Combined?

Next to Buffy the Vampire Slayer herself, the unquestionable second most important person in the Buffyverse has got to be the love of her life, Angel. Sure, Buffy has a number of boyfriends throughout her series, and Angel dates other women. At the same time, however, many fans felt the two were destined to be with one another from the moment gypsies cast a curse on Angel making him a rare vampire with a soul.

Of course, Angel spent a solid hundred years as a destructive monster before the gypsies pacified him, leading to another century plus of dark, concerned brooding, the former monster having great difficulty coming to terms with his past sins. The one thing helping Angel hold on to humanity is his love for Buffy, which makes it that much harder when he realizes the two can never be together. To prevent further heartbreak, Angel left Sunnydale for Los Angeles, starting a demonic investigation service that went on to save dozens of lives.

Not that there weren’t plenty of problems along the way, as some demons don’t take too kindly to being investigated. As Angel finds out, there are also some evil humans out there who prefer anarchy to the reformed vampire’s semblance of morality. If you think you’re more of a goodhearted soul yourself, take our quiz and find out how much you know about Buffy’s vampire boyfriend, Angel.

(Note: as per usual, the events of the Angel comic books are not pertinent to this quiz.)

Question 1

What nationality is Angel?

Tall, (hiding in the) dark, and handsome, Angel makes a huge impression on Buffy from the moment she first sees him. The same thing could be said about Cordelia, who instantly refers to Angel as “salty goodness.” Amazingly, the two ladies are drawn to the centuries old vampire without knowing anything about him, including the fact that, well, he’s a centuries old vampire. They also have no idea that he’s been wandering the planet on a journey of redemption, making it far from his homeland by the time they cross paths. Part of the issue is that he somehow lost his accent.

Question 2

What was Angel’s name before getting turned into a vampire?

It’s entirely possible that an Irish Catholic family would name their eldest offspring Angel, and in a sense, that is how the reformed vampire gets his name. However, the moniker most people know him by is in fact the second title he received throughout his existence. While Angel was still a human, he went by a much more common name, one that hardly inspires either fear or hope into those who hear it. His own little brother renamed him Angel after he turned, a misunderstanding that resulted in the poor kid becoming one of his first victims.

Question 3

Who turned Angel into a vampire?

For Liam to turn into Angel, the influence of an older, meaner vampire was required to turn him from human into beast. Said demon found Liam wasting away at a bar after getting kicked out of his home by his father, making him easy pickings for a venture over to the dark side. That the person who turned him happens to be exactly the type of woman who Liam spent all his time chasing made her job even simpler, able to seduce him into darkness without making the slightest effort.

Question 4

What name did Angel go by when he was evil?

Technically speaking, Angel didn’t do the horrible things he remembers doing as a vampire. Like anyone who turns over to the dark side, Angel had a demon in place of his soul during this time, one that went by a different name than the one he chose after becoming good again. Nonetheless, Angel’s physical body did commit those acts, making it impossible for him to forget them even after regaining his soul. Perhaps for this reason he chose the name Angel, a name implying redemption while also coincidentally very similar to the one he used while a monster.

Question 5

Who originally tells Angel about Buffy?

Buffy and Angel are both TV shows about prophecies, and how the foretold stories from years ago rarely lie. With that in mind, the series intentionally suggested the two of them were meant to be together forever, most notable through scenes of Angel watching and almost stalking Buffy pretty much from the moment she becomes the Slayer. Around that time, Angel was living in sewers and feeding on rats, until a mysterious stranger came along and informed him a journey of redemption was about to begin, and Buffy would play a key role in it.

Question 6

What’s the name of the centuries old demon hunter who travels through time seeking Angel?

Killing more victims than he ever had time to name, Angel obviously has longstanding enemies from his time as Angelus that never quite forgot about him. One of his fiercest enemies is a human whose entire family was slaughtered by the beast, save his daughter, who the hunter himself was forced to kill after Darla turned her into a vampire. Predictably, this left the man extremely bitter, willing to travel through time to finally get revenge on Angelus, not caring that his soul meant he was no longer the monster he used to be.

Question 7

Whose visions initially guide Angel after he moves to Los Angeles?

When most people pack up their bags and try to restart their lives in Los Angeles, they find themselves scared, alone, and maybe a little bit overwhelmed. Angel only spends a brief period of time feeling this way if any, as a mysterious man soon approaches him claiming he receives visions of horrible events that are moments away from happening. This stranger also believes Angel should help him solve these people’s crises, a feeling the reformed vampire is surprisingly amenable towards.

Question 8

What evil law firm is constantly on Angel’s tail?

The more Angel dedicates himself to helping the disadvantaged, the more evil outside forces see him as a serious threat. This especially holds true for a villainous law firm that the vampire and his team soon realize span across several dimensions. His rival’s evil influence knowing no bounds, virtually every conflict Angel gets involved with is somehow connected to this firm. Even if they have nothing to do with it at first, the information Angel has a new interest will get them involved, and fast.

Question 9

How does Buffy discover Angel is a vampire?

For the first several weeks if not months the two know each other, Angel hides the fact he’s a vampire from Buffy, and with good reason. After all, Buffy’s job description is vampire slayer, meaning her sworn duty from birth is to prevent his kind from reigning on Earth. Of course, Angel is much different from the average vampire, such to the extent Buffy starts falling in love with him. Ultimately, this turns out to be how his secret is revealed, as a close moment between them makes Buffy realize the truth.

Question 10

Which of Buffy’s former classmates unknowingly follows Angel to LA?

Angel’s excuse for moving to Los Angeles, to get away from a love he can’t touch, probably isn’t all that uncommon. That said, the other former Sunnydale resident who moves to LA has an even more mainstream excuse: they believe the City of Angels is the perfect place to jumpstart an acting career. What they fail to take into consideration is that it’s really hard to make it as an entertainer, regardless of how good looking is, or how popular in high school they may have been.

Question 11

What does Angel name the child he has with Darla?

When a human turns into a vampire, their physical body dies, replaced with a shell housing a vicious demon that seeks destruction and literally thirsts for blood. Another side effect is that vampires can no longer have children, at least until Angel and Darla come along to once again break the millennia of traditional. With her dying breath, Darla recognizes that having a child is the one good thing she and Angel ever did together, begging him to take care of their baby in spite of all the evil she had committed.

Question 12

A pure moment of what emotion can undo the gypsy curse giving Angel a soul?

This quiz has already done a lot of talking about how Angel has a soul without getting into the specifics of how that happened. Most vampires lose their sense of humanity the second they die, and become evil, and given the horrible things he committed as Angelus, that’s obviously the case with Angel. Things changed for him in a major way, though, when a gypsy tribe cursed him with a soul, forcing him to reflect in immortality on the horrible things he had done…unless a certain quality could be achieved, freeing him from the torment.

Question 13

Which rogue demon hunter who soon becomes a key member of Angel’s crew?

One of the main themes in Angel is how time can change a person, with the title character growing from a drunken lout to an evil murder and then finally a virtuous hero looking to make up for his mistakes. Likewise, everyone to come into contact with Angel undergoes some pretty major changes, most of all the formerly straight-laced Watcher who turns into a leather-clad “rogue demon hunter.” This is merely the first step in a massive transformation that gradually becomes the darkest and perhaps most tragic of Angel’s many allies.

Question 14

Which of Angel’s fellow vamps became his right hand man?

Although Angel is a good guy for most of his time on both TV shows he starred on, his decades as a villain still left ramifications across the globe that the now reformed vamp would have to deal with. The thorn that most consistently sticks in his side is the same monster who used to be his closest male confidante, the two of them wrecking havoc across Europe alongside their girlfriends Darla and Drusilla. They also constantly butted heads over those two women, Drusilla in particular, and before things were said and done between them, they’d war over Buffy, as well.

Question 15

Who is Angelus’s first major victim after losing his soul?

After Spike and Drusilla’s plan to return the latter to health was a total success for the demonic couple, things looked especially bad for Buffy and her Scooby Gang. To prevent the horrors they were intending, Angel attempts to bring a key element of their plot to “the remotest region possible,” thus pulling him and Buffy apart for good. To say goodbye, the two consummate their relationship for the first time, giving Angel the true moment of happiness that makes him evil. Buffy is unsure he changed at first, until the once again murderous Angelus marks an especially close victim.

Question 16

What type of ring does Angel give Buffy?

Immediately prior to the pair having sex, thus making Angel evil again, he and Buffy admit their feelings to one another in plain speech. Because words aren’t always enough, Angel also buys Buffy a special type of ring that symbolizes his deep feelings for her. Outside of Buffy, these rings were once worn by woman to denote their dating status, wearing the heart it featured outward or inward to depending on whether theirs was “taken” or not. In fact, this is also the logic used on Buffy, though the Slayer in question may not realize it until another boy gives her the same gift.

Question 17

What alternate dimension does Angel venture to rescue Cordelia?

There is no journey too far for an undead vampire to take, and should his human friends want to come along for the ride, who is he to stop them? Well, okay, Angel probably could and should have stopped both Gunn and Wesley from his cross dimensional journey to rescue Cordelia, but it’s not like either one would take no for an answer. Believe it or not, they were also interested in saving Cordelia’s life, and Wesley was more than happy to learn whatever other interesting facts he might find along the way.

Question 18

Who else does Angel and company end up saving from Pylea?

From the moment Angel and company arrive in Pylea, they realize the alternate dimension is almost entirely populated by demons. The few humans they find are kept as animals or hunted for sport, a reality that does not bode well for their missing friend, Cordelia. It also means absolute hell for a poor scientist who was sent to Pylea years earlier, who never had an Angel Investigations to come and save her. That doesn’t mean she gave up hope, though, and almost instantly became obsessed when an actual Angel showed up to be her knight in shining armor.

Question 19

Who restores Angel’s soul both times he loses it?

Originally, Angel’s soul was placed in him as a curse by gypsies, all of whom have long since died by the time he loses that humanity and becomes a monster all over again. Luckily, there’s an incredibly powerful witch who happens to be close friends with the Slayer, willing to restore Angel’s soul whether he happens to be nearby or not. The second time around, she’s even willing to travel all the way from Sunnydale to Los Angeles to do the deed, aware that letting Angel stay evil could be catastrophic for the whole world.

Question 20

What’s the name of the LAPD Officer who helps Angel throughout season one?

Both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel bring up the elephant in the room when it comes to any sort of TV show that brings literal magic into the real world: yes, normal people are aware of it. However, this hardly means the vast majority of them understand it, and almost none of them are able to deduce or comprehend the fact vampires and demons are also real, slowly wreaking havoc over society at large. Not even Angel’s friend at the LAPD fully understands the situation.

Question 21

How does Faith nearly kill Angel?

Unsurprisingly, the moment Faith reveals she’s headed over to the dark side, it becomes one of her goals to destroy everything Buffy loves. The Mayor is behind the scenes pulling the strings of course, yet this only emboldens Faith to try plans she may not have otherwise contrived herself. For examples, while Faith’s main instinct is to instantly kill, The Mayor realizes simply injuring Angel and thus distracting Buffy would better serve their interests than actually killing him. That this will deeply hurt the vampire and enact a measure of revenge for once pretending to be evil is icing on the cake.

Question 22

When does Angel last see Buffy before leaving to LA?

Fearing that another moment of pure happiness would almost certainly cause him to lose his soul again, and worried that he and Buffy couldn’t contain their emotions and prevent themselves from making such a moment happen, Angel decides the only reasonable thing to do is breakup with the Slayer and leave Sunnydale forever. In one sense, this is a drastic move, yet in another it’s really the only way to save humanity from what could happen if they stayed together long enough to let their inhibitions drop.

Question 23

What giant building does Angel make his home and headquarters?

Constantly harassed by Wolfram & Hart, it’s really not surprising that the small offices Angel Investigations use throughout season one gets destroyed beyond repair. Besides, Angel’s crew was getting bigger anyway, and the crimes they solved were gaining importance along with it. This meant a bigger home base was required, and Angel found the perfect place in an abandoned business smack dab in the middle of LA. Coincidentally, Angel also spent some time in this establishment in the 1950s, until paranoid Joseph McCarthy fans chased him away.

Question 24

Who tells Angel that Buffy died a second time?

Given everything that happens in Pylea, it’s perfectly understandable that Angel and his friends essentially forgot about the fact Buffy and the Scoobies were busy saving the world for the millionth time when they were away. In fact, with the growing distance between Buffy and Angel, it’s possible they never even knew how dire the situation was until an old face is found waiting for them in the Hyperion Hotel upon their return. Immediately, Angel realizes exactly what happened, his face sinking, heart breaking.

Question 25

What creature does Angel say he wants to kill during the final battle?

Unable to stop fighting even in the face of a sure apocalypse, the surviving members of Angel Investigation close out their series by raising fists against an overwhelmingly large army of demons. Angel, Spike, Illyria, and Gunn are the only people to remain, and uncertain though they may be about the future, one thing they have in common is a desire to keep fighting. For his part, Angel laughs off the threat of eternal doom, having heard that old yarn a million times. Instead, he moves on to thinking about what demon he’ll kill first, and he decides to go big or go home.

Question 26

To which dimension does Holtz take Angel’s son?

Still seeking revenge on Angel yet no longer looking to kill him, Holtz takes a different approach in how to make the vampire to suffer for his crimes. Recognizing a conflicted mind when he sees it, Holtz manipulates Wesley into kidnapping Connor’s son on his behalf. To show appreciate, Holtz then has his lackey cut Wesley’s throat, not exactly thanking him for a job well done. From there, Holtz takes baby Connor to “the darkest of the dark worlds,” looking to create a monster and ensure Angel will never again see his child.

Question 27

What demon does Angelus summon to suck the world into hell?

Hardly content with the chaos three mere vampires can cause, especially when one of those three is in a wheelchair, Angel decides Drusilla, Spike, and himself aren’t enough to destroy Sunnydale on their own. Wanting to summon a truly evil beast that can reign on Earth, the once again evil vampire steals a stone statue that was housing its demonic presence for centuries. According to Angel’s old ally Whistler, however, the prophecy foretells that Angel is going to stop this beast, not unleash it, sealing his fate when Buffy arrives on the scene to kill him.

Question 28

On what day does Angel try to commit suicide before Buffy stops him?

After regaining his soul for the second time, Angel is sent to a hell dimension for thousands of years, sucked in by Acathla as Buffy stabbed them both through the heart. For whatever reason, he then winds up back in Sunnydale, transported through the Claddagh ring he once gave to Buffy. Shortly thereafter, once again brooding over the atrocities he once committed, Angel decides to end his unlife by standing on a hilltop and waiting for sunlight to kill him. At the last minute, Buffy arrives and convinces him there’s still plenty for him to live for.

Question 29

What does Angel give Buffy in “Chosen?”

Semi-unknowingly, Angel ventures back to Sunnydale just in the nick of time to help Buffy out during the final battle. As it would turn out, however, Buffy doesn’t exactly want him around. For one, the emotions he brings in her could be seriously distracting. She’s also with Spike now, and beyond those two issues, Buffy also recognizes that a second front may be required if the battle doesn’t turn out in her favor. Angel’s feelings might be hurt a little, but he still delivers his ex a mystical item that proves integral in the upcoming war.

Question 30

Who informs Angel that saving Fred would kill millions?

A show based entirely on prophecies and accepting what fate foretells, one might find it odd that Angel, Spike, and the rest of the crew travel across the world looking for a way to save Fred’s mortal body from becoming the host to a demon named Illyria. On the other hand, anyone who met sweet, innocent Fred would likely go on the same journey. That quality makes it all the more painful when Angel and Spike learn from a mystic warrior that the only way to save her would send Illyria’s essence halfway across the Earth, killing everyone it passes in the process.

Question 31

Why do Spike and Drusilla kidnap Angel?

When Spike and Drusilla arrive in Sunnydale, their plans are initially unclear aside from the fact they intend to wreck havoc. In due time, Giles’s research plus Buffy’s investigations reveal the reason they came to town is directly related to their old running buddy, Angel. Obviously, this puts Buffy’s new boyfriend in immediate danger, and that’s only the least of their problems. Should Drusilla and Spike succeed in their goals, the whole world would again be at stake, and either way its up to the Slayer to save us all.

Question 32

Who is the werewolf Angel briefly dates in season five?

Because a moment of true happiness could make him turn evil again, Angel doesn’t spend that much time on the dating scene. There’s also the fact he’s eternally in love with the Slayer, making it hard for any other mere mortal women to live up. Maybe this is why it’s not a mortal who Angel eventually shacks up with, but a werewolf he initially encounters about to be served at a high end, demonic restaurant. After he saves her, the lycanthrope and Angel realize they share affection for one another and start going out.

Question 33

What organization does Angel plot to assassinate throughout his last few episodes?

Throughout the entire Angel series, viewers are aware Wolfram & Hart are an evil corporation up to no good. The reformed vampire is also fully aware of this, making the season five twist that he became the CEO of the law firm’s LA branch an extremely surprising one. Eventually, however, it all starts coming together, as Angel reveals a plan to take down the Senior Partners from the inside. To do so, he focuses on an especially vile cult who serve as the Partners physical representation on Earth.

Question 34

Whose blood does Angel drink in “Not Fade Away?”

Since regaining his soul and becoming a good guy, Angel has largely stopped drinking the blood of humans unless absolutely necessary. In one instance, he drank Buffy’s blood to cure a vampiric poison, and he also murdered the innocent Drogyn via a rather specific neck injury as the last step in his plan to trick the Circle of the Black Thorn into accepting him. In Angel’s series final, the vamp drinks from one last human after learning this person has the blood of the Senior Partners flowing through his veins, thus capturing that power for himself.

Question 35

Which of his many victims did Angel consider his masterpiece?

Being more of a torturous serial killer than a mere vampire, Angelus actually took pride in murdering innocent people whether he sucked their blood afterwards or not. To a vampire completely free of humanity, the hunt is more satisfying than the kill itself, yet for Angelus not even hunting people was enough; he also had to break their souls. Never did he accomplish this more than with the poor young woman training to enter the convent, who he slowly drove mad by murdering her entire family and then turning her into a vampire.

Question 36

What happens between Cordy and Angel at the ballet?

Never one to hide his softer side, when Angel decides his team deserve a night off, he buys Gunn, Fred, and Cordelia all tickets to see a local ballet. As it would turn out, Angel watched a legendary performance group perform the same play roughly one century earlier. Much to his surprise, it looks like the prima ballerina in that night’s performance is the same one as all those years ago, a fact Angel finds worth deeper investigation as per usual.

Question 37

What type of demon spoils Buffy and Angel’s first reunion?

Having been separated for only a few months, Angel is forced to reenter Buffy’s life when Doyle has a vision of the Slayer in danger. Naturally, Angel’s ex is more than capable of handling herself, what with the superpowers and all. Nonetheless, the vamp rushes back to Sunnydale to “save her,” somewhat annoying Buffy and sending her towards LA to have a talk with her erstwhile romantic partner. During their conversation, a demon breaks in on the chat and causes Angel to briefly become human again.

Question 38

What does Lindsey trick Angel and Spike into fighting over?

Always conniving and manipulating the scene from afar, Lindsey McDonald reasserts his presence in Angel’s life in a major way throughout season five after having disappeared for most of his series. One of his first major tricks is getting Angel to start second guessing the Shanshu Prophecy, the ancient divination that foretells a vampire with a soul regaining his humanity. It wasn’t that hard for Lindsey to confuse the guy, as Spike had recently reappeared as well, and truth be told, he was looking pretty Shanshu from the moment he showed back up.

Question 39

What does Angel mistake for demons when reverted to his teenage self?

Going back to the theme of change for a second, in the same way Angel transforms from a villain to a hero, virtually everyone alive likes to argue they are nothing like their teenage selves. This is definitely true for everyone Angel meets throughout the course of his show, and they all come face to face with this fact in “Spin the Bottle.” Looking to help Cordelia regain her memory, Lorne messes up a spell and instead causes everyone else to lose theirs. This includes Angel, who doesn’t even realize he’s a vampire, thinking he’s back in Ireland and a child once more.

Question 40

Who does Angel hire to voluntarily remove his soul?

Faced with a threat that seems unresearchable, the only recourse Angel Investigations has on a mysterious force known only as The Beast is that Angelus once encountered the creature way back during his original run as a villain. Despite the risks involved, Angel accepts the absolute only way they can research this Beast any further is to unlock the demonic portion of himself, and Wesley happens to know a guy with the ability to do just that. Placing Angel in a trance, the shaman manufactures a scenario where Angel will think he’s experiencing true happiness, thus reviving his demon self once again.
