Do You Have What It Takes To Name All These Harry Potter Characters?

The Harry Potter book and movie series has got to be one of the most magical franchises ever created. As most fans are probably well aware, the book series was written by the very talented J. K. Rowling. She first came up with the idea for her books in the 90's and although the draft for her first novel was rejected by several publishers, she persevered and finally saw it accepted. Nonetheless, we doubt that she knew what was going to happen next: the novel became a bestseller, with fans in all four corners of the globe raving about the magical world and its inhabitants.

It wasn't long before the novel series was turned into a movie series. The movies turned out to be just as successful as the books. Before long, Harry Potter theme parks were a thing and a prequel film series was in the works.

Those who are about to take this quiz obviously consider themselves to be true Potterheads. But we doubt that even the biggest of fans will pass this quiz with flying colors. After all, we ask everyone to identify not only the major characters but also the minor ones too. Trust us: the task ahead is tougher than it sounds.

Question 1

Who is the protagonist?

Every Potterhead should be able to name this character. Why? Well, because he is the series' protagonist. Also known as "the boy who lived", this character had no idea that he was a wizard when we first met him. He also did not know that he had defeated one of the most powerful wizards in the wizarding world when he was a mere baby. This character was an orphan - his parents' lives were taken by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. He spent most of his teenage years fighting the Dark Lord. He ended up winning in the end, thus bringing peace and stability to the wizarding world.

Question 2

Name the smartest witch of her year.

Known as the smartest witch of her year, the female character that can be seen in the image above was the protagonist's best friend. She was a real nerd and spent most of her time in the library. Initially she had a tough time making friends: she was too brainy for her own good and, of course, it did not help that she had an air of superiority about her. It was this lack of friends that resulted in her becoming friends with "the boy who lived" though and changed her life for good. Unable to cope with her loneliness she hid in a girls' bathroom, came face to face with a troll, and was saved by the protagonist and his friend. The rest is history.

Question 3

Who is the protagonist's sidekick?

Pretty much everyone should pass this question with flying colors. After all, this character was the protagonist's best friend. The two met at the train station: the protagonist had no idea how to get to Platform 9 3/4 (don't forget that he had grown up in the company of Muggles and did not know much about the wizarding world) and this character's mom was kind enough to help him. The two then further bonded in the train. This character comes from a rather large family. Being one of the youngest siblings he rarely got any new clothes, books or other magical objects. Instead, he had to make do with hand-me-downs.

Question 4

Who is this kind witch?

One of our favorite characters, the woman in the image above was the mother of the protagonist's best friend. In addition, she also acted as a motherly figure to the protagonist. For example, she always invited him over to her house during school holidays. Back when she was a young witch, she was sorted into the Gryffindor house. She ended up marrying a Gryffindor man and the two had seven children (six boys and one girl). She was also a member of the Order of the Phoenix and participated in the Battle of Hogwarts. She was the witch who defeated one of the Dark Lord's most ardent followers.

Question 5

Name this wizard obsessed with all things Muggle.

If you know the name of this character then go ahead and select it from the four options available above. If not, keep on reading for a few hints. The character that can be seen in the image above was the father of the protagonist's best friend. He was an employee of the Ministry of Magic and a fierce opponent of the Dark Lord. At one point during the series he was attacked by You-Know-Who's pet snake Nagini, but luckily survived. Even though this character was a pure wizard, he was fascinated by all things Muggle, including cars, and constantly asked the protagonist to tell him more about the Muggle world.

Question 6

Who is this foreign student?

While some of the characters on this quiz were introduced to us in the first movie (or the first book), others we met a little later. Take the character that can be seen in the image above, for example. We first met her in the fourth movie. She was a foreign student from France who came to Hogwarts with her school so as to participate in the Triwizard Tournament. She was chosen as the Champion of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. This character was very beautiful, no doubt because she was a quarter-Veela witch. She ended up marrying the protagonist's best friend's older brother.

Question 7

Name this giant.

Everyone had a soft spot for this half-giant wizard. He was the one who told the series' protagonist that he was a wizard and that his parents did not pass away in a car crash but rather were eliminated by the Dark Lord. As a boy, this character attended Hogwarts and was sorted into Gryffindor house. However, his love for magical creatures got him into trouble: the young Dark Lord made it look like this character opened up the Chamber of Secrets and used his pet Acromantula (a giant spider) to attack Muggle-born students. Consequently, this character was expelled but was allowed to stay at Hogwarts as a gamekeeper.

Question 8

Name the Headmaster of Hogwarts.

This character was the Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (although before he got this position he was the Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor and then later the Transfiguration Professor according to Harry Potter Wiki). He told the series' protagonist all there was to know about the Dark Lord, including the fact that he had created Horcruxes. This character tried his very best to get rid of all the Horcruxes himself but ultimately knew that the protagonist would have to finish what he had started. This character was a very powerful wizard. Indeed, it was said that he was the only man that the Dark Lord was afraid of.

Question 9

Who is this Professor of Transfiguration?

This character was tough but undoubtedly fair. When we first met her she was the Professor of Transfiguration and the Head of Gryffindor House. However, towards the end of the series, she was promoted to the position of the Headmistress of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Like most of our favorite characters, this character was also a member of the Order of the Phoenix. She fought bravely against the Dark Lord. In fact, who knows if the Battle of Hogwarts would have even been won without her contribution. During the protagonist's fifth year at Hogwarts, this character opposed a nosy Ministry of Magic bureaucrat (also known as High Inquisitor of Hogwarts).

Question 10

Name this Gryffindor student.

When we were first introduced to this character (in the protagonist's first year at Hogwarts) we couldn't believe it that he was sorted into Gryffindor house. He seemed so meek, timid, shy and clumsy. However, over the course of the series this young man stunned us all by growing into a confident and loyal friend. In fact, it was none other than this character who beheaded the Dark Lord's snake Nagini, thus getting rid of the seventh and final Horcrux. Just like the protagonist, this character was also an orphan: his parents had been members of the Order of the Phoenix and were eliminated by the followers of the Dark Lord. As such, this character grew up with his grandma.

Question 11

Who knows the name of the protagonist's nemesis?

This character came from an ancient wizarding family and as such believed that he was better than everyone else (except those who also came from old families). He had a particular dislike for Muggleborns and was the nemesis of the series' protagonist. His parents were the followers of the Dark Lord. Eventually he also became the follower of You-Know-Who but did not like his new lifestyle in the slightest. He was good friends with two other Slytherin students. He was obviously not a bad student for he was made prefect of his house. Furthermore, during the protagonist's fifth year at Hogwarts this character became a member of the Inquisitorial Squad (he basically spied on other students and reported them to the High Inquisitor of Hogwarts).

Question 12

What is the name of this student from Bulgaria?

This character was a student, but unlike most other characters on this quiz, he did not attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Rather, he was enrolled in Durmstrang Institute. But he was no ordinary student, even by Bulgarian standards. You see: he was also a world-famous Quidditch player. He was the Seeker for the Bulgarian National Quidditch team. This character visited Hogwarts in the protagonist's fourth year at Hogwarts. He was chosen as one of the Champions of the ill-fated Triwizard Tournament. He did pretty well at it but did not win. As most fans can probably recall, he was smitten with the protagonist's friend whom he asked to be his date to the Yule Ball.

Question 13

Name the protagonist's godfather.

This character was mentioned by other characters before he was shown on screen. Initially, we all thought that he was the bad guy and that he was after the series' protagonist. Indeed, we all believed that he was the one responsible for the passing away of the protagonist's parents. However, in the end it turned out that we were wrong. He was one of the nicest characters on the series. Furthermore, he was the protagonist's godfather. The two had a great relationship and as such the protagonist was incredibly upset when this character passed away. Fun fact: this character was an animagus, which means that he could turn into an animal (or to be more specific, a dog) at will.

Question 14

Who is the Professor of Potions?

Let's be honest: none of us liked this character very much, at least not initially. He was mean to the series' protagonist for seemingly no apparent reason. Of course, later we learned that once upon a time he was in love with the protagonist's mother and that the protagonist's father bullied him. In addition, at the start we all suspected that this character worked for the Dark Lord and that he snitched on Hogwarts' Headmaster. That proved not to be the case, however. While it was true that he was a double agent, he was never loyal to the Dark Lord and actually worked for the school's Headmaster.

Question 15

Name this werewolf.

This character was the series' protagonist's father's friend. The two attended Hogwarts together and were both sorted into Gryffindor house. During the protagonist's third year at Hogwarts, this character was hired to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts. He was a great Professor and taught the Protagonist how to defend himself against Dementors (dark creatures that feast on people's happiness). Unfortunately, at the end of the year he was let go from his position because it came to light that he was a werewolf (he was bitten by one when he was just a child). Obviously, the Headmaster knew that before he hired him but this piece of news caused an uproar among students' parents.

Question 16

What is the name of Hogwarts' caretaker?

One of our least favorite characters, the man that can be seen in the image above was the caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was a mean-spirited man who spent his days trying to catch students in compromising situations. He also had a cat named Mrs. Norris who was just as bad as him. Students knew that if Mrs. Norris was around that meant that this character would soon show up too. This character was actually a Squib which means that while he was born into a wizarding family he did not possess any magical abilities himself.

Question 17

Who is this ghost?

Here we have something a little different. This character is neither a student (even if she does look like one) nor a Professor. Rather, she is a ghost. This character was a Muggle-born witch who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at the same time as the Dark Lord. She was sorted into Ravenclaw house but was not very happy because she was always bullied by her peers. As such, she spent most of her time crying in the second-floor girls' bathroom. It was there that her life was taken by Salazar Slytherin's Basilisk under the command of the young Dark Lord.

Question 18

What is the name of this blonde witch?

The blonde witch above was friends with the series' protagonist. She was sorted into Ravenclaw house. Most students thought that she was super weird. Indeed, her personality was somewhat strange and her views bizarre. However, that's exactly what made her so interesting and unique. Her father was the editor of a curious magazine titled The Quibbler. This character was a loyal friend and a member of Dumbledore's Army. She took part in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries as well as the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. Furthermore, she co-led Dumbledore's Army when Hogwarts fell under the command of You-Know-Who.

Question 19

Name this dark wizard.

This character was the father of the series' protagonist's nemesis. He came from an ancient family of wizards and was an ardent follower of the Dark Lord. After the First Wizarding War he claimed that he was under the Imperius Curse (a spell that puts the victim into another person's control) and thus avoided jail time. He rejoined the Dark Lord after the latter returned and was finally jailed. Then the Dark Lord broke his followers out of jail but treated this character and his family with disdain (Harry Potter Wiki). At the end of the Second Wizarding War this character and his family had had enough and thus defected.

Question 20

Who is the Dark Lord?

This character was the reason why the series' protagonist had such a difficult life. It was none other than this character who took the lives of the protagonist's parents. He tried to eliminate the protagonist too but his mother's love saved him. Of course, that did not stop this character from attempting to get rid of the protagonist once and for all at every opportunity that he got. In the end, he was unsuccessful: the protagonist defeated this powerful wizard during the Battle of Hogwarts. It wasn't easy though. You see: this character had as many as seven Horcruxes which made him immortal. To defeat this wizard the protagonist first had to find and do away with all of the Horcruxes.

In the series' protagonist's fourth year at Hogwarts, this character was hired as the Professor for Defense Against the Dark Arts. Unfortunately, right before his arrival he was taken by another character (a follower of the Dark Lord) who ended up hiding the famous Auror in a magical chest and disguising himself as him. This character's life was taken by You-Know-Who in one of the later battles (Harry Potter Wiki).

Question 23

Who is this loyal elf?

Every true fan of the magical series should be able to ace this question. After all, the house elf above was one of our favorite characters. Initially he belonged to the protagonist's nemesis family. Nonetheless, that did not stop him from trying to warn the protagonist of the dangers that awaited him at Hogwarts in his second year at Hogwarts. Much to our dismay, this loyal character passed away at the hands of one of the Dark Lord's followers.

Question 24

Name this Ministry of Magic bureaucrat.

This annoying character was an employee of the Ministry of Magic. She was appointed as the Professor for Defense Against the Dark Arts by the Minister for Magic himself. She was a pretty incompetent teacher who focused solely on theory, neglecting all practical aspects of the subject. The series' protagonist seriously disliked her and often got into trouble because of the things he said to her. She participated in several battles in the Second Wizarding War and made it her goal to take the lives of any relatives that were members of the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter Wiki). She was quite successful. During the Battle of Hogwarts, she was one of the last dark witches and wizards standing. However, she didn't make it: her life was taken by the protagonist's best friend's mother.

Question 26

Name this Slytherin student.

Who thinks that they know the name of this particular character? This character was best friends with the protagonist's nemesis. He too was a student at Hogwarts and was sorted into Slytherin house. He came from a family of dark witches and wizards. His father was a follower of the Dark Lord. Consequently, it comes as no surprise that in his final year at Hogwarts he too became loyal to You-Know-Who. Initially this character did not believe the protagonist when he said that the Dark Lord had returned (mostly because his mother did not believe him). However, in the end, he revised his opinion and even joined Dumbledore's Army, a secret organisation initiated by the protagonist to teach his fellow Hogwarts students proper Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Question 29

Who is protagonist's crush?

Those who are loyal fans of the series are probably well aware that the protagonist had a crush on the witch pictured above. As is probably quite obvious from the image alone, this witch was a student at Hogwarts. To be more specific, she was a student of Ravenclaw House. She was a relatively popular student. Additionally, she played on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team (in the position of a Seeker). For a while, she went out with another character (Hogwarts Triwizard Tournament champion). She lied to the Dark Lord, thus allowing the protagonist to win the Battle of Hogwarts.

Interestingly enough, this character took on a few forms. In the image above, we see him as a young man. He had not yet created all seven Horcruxes and he had not yet attempted to take the life of the protagonist. This character was conceived as a result of a love potion. As soon as the love potion stopped working, his father left this character's mother. She passed away in birth. Consequently, this character grew up in an orphanage. Who is the editor of The Quibbler?
